President’s
Report
by Tom Elum
VNEA Rolls On.
Well, another successful season is
under our belt. I hope that everyone
enjoyed their league season. Most
State and Provincials are winding
down with many success stories
around the country.
The Vegas World Championships are
May 22-31 at Bally’s Hotel in fabulous
Las Vegas, Nevada. It looks like there
is going to be another incredible turnout for this great event.
Don’t forget to stop by the VNEA
Booth and say “hello” to me and my
crew. We love seeing our Charter and
Coordinators.
If you’ve never been to the event,
you’re going to love the computerized event system that runs the entire
event without a glich. Players can
keep track of their matches on their
Smartphones and always know when
and where they play. It’s a GREAT
System!
I hope that everyone had a great
season and best of luck to all of our
players attending our Vegas
Championships!

REGIONAL EVENTS
2014 Eastern Ontario
VNEA Championships
March 26-30, 2014 - Clarion Resort Pinewood Park
On behalf of the Steering Committee
for the 2014 Eastern Ontario VNEA
Championships in North Bay, Ontario,
I would like to personally thank all of the
players and Charter Holders for their participation in this year’s incredible event.
Events like these provide opportunities to
connect with old friends and chances to
meet new ones.
Seventy-four Teams and 162 Singles
were involved in some exciting competition, testing their skills in pursuit
of a title at the 1st Annual Tournament.
The competition within all divisions
was strong and many tight matches
were witnessed in both the Single and
Team events. The excitement piqued
at Friday night’s opening ceremonies
with two draws for 39” LCD televisions,
generously provided by the EOVNEA.
Guests of honour, Councilman Chris
Mayne, from the City of North Bay and
Sue Ray, General Manager of Pinewood
Park Clarion Resort, the host facility,
expressed amazement at the sheer size of
the event and complimented volunteers
and organizers for all their dedication and
hard work.
An event of this magnitude does not
come together without an excellent team
of people. Participating Charter Holders included Billard Temis from Bearn,
Quebec, Ontario Skill Games from
Scarborough, Northshore Vending from
Sault Ste. Marie, New Crown Music from
Sudbury, Les Agences Simplex from
Rouyn-Noranda, Joyland Amusements
from Stratford, Regent Vending from
Ottawa and Partners Billiards & Bowling from North Bay. We applaud the

Steering Committee and Volunteers for
their hard work which ensured this event
was an astounding success. Their time
and dedication is appreciated by all those
involved in the tournament.
Let us not forget our behind the scenes
volunteers, the set up and take down
crew, from Northshore Vending in Sault
Ste Marie, who under the guidance of
John Weloski and Boomer Braido, came
in a day early to perform the laborious
process of setting up 38 pool tables.
These guys were amazing and are to be
commended for their transformation from
hotel banquet room to professional pool
tournament venue. Many thanks to these
dedicated players and volunteers, John
Weloski, Boomer Braido, Dan Tremblay,
Carlo Lucio, Ron Sauve, Greg Saarela,
Chad Laroue, Rob Wilson, Frank Genetti,
Sam Taranto, Steve Thomas and our
transport driver, Glen Auger.
Thank you to Stephane Lacombe,
Rouyn-Noranda, for his scheduling
expertise with the Compusport tournament software program. Stephane spent
many hours organizing data and was
instrumental in ensuring the tournament ran in a punctual manner during
the entire event. The Referee Team
Leader, Cory Coulter, travelled all the
way from Sarnia to lead a squad of 7 top
notch referees. Under Cory’s guidance,
our dedicated team of referees, Freida
Nassas, Rob Barr, Stephane Lacombe,
Michel Desroches, Daryl Duguay, Derick
Girard and Serge Ruel, were committed
to excellence and ensured that the tournament ran flawlessly. Outstanding job,
refs! Cory also instructed five players,
who completed the referee course and are
now certified referees, looking forward to
reffing opportunities in their futures.
Our volunteers worked many countless
hours, starting early morning until very
late at night, working the podium, ensuring scoresheet results were entered into
the system and new match cards were
available in a timely manner. Detail to
every item was given the utmost attention, which ensured an organized event.
Jeremy McRae, Stratford, did an incredible job, as he tackled the challenging
task of running mini tournaments into the
wee hours of the morning.
Many thanks to our hard working Executive Committee, Bonnie Zufelt, President;
John Weloski, Vice President; Larry
Zigras, Treasurer and Trina Cooper,
Secretary, as well as our other members,
Boomer Braido, Stephane Lacombe,
Nancy Bernard Cote-Baril, Shawn Norris
and Curtis Houlden. We are very fortunate to have these individuals involved in
our new Eastern Ontario VNEA Association.
To the all the players and Charter Holders
from across two Provinces, we would like
to thank you for your participation. Win
or lose, each and every player should be
proud of their accomplishments.
Make sure to visit our website at
EOVNEA.com to view the 2014 results
and photographs and the latest information on upcoming events. Don’t forget
to “like” us on Facebook on the Eastern
Ontario Valley National Eight Ball Association and “follow” us on Twitter @

Next year, we will be back in North Bay at
the Pinewood Park Clarion Resort from
February 26 - March 1, 2015 and I know
everyone will be looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. It
is my hope that the good sportsmanship,
fair play and integrity displayed at this
tournament will continue for many years.
See you all in 2015!

“TOP CAT” EVENT
This new and exciting TEAM
event will consist of all 1st
and 2nd Place Finishers in
the Singles Tournament. All
Divisions Finalists, both Boys
and Girls, will compete in the
9-Game, Single-Elimination,
Team format to see who is
the “BEST OF THE BEST”!
ALL ACTION IN...
OZONE
Team Format
Calling the 8-Ball
Teams will consist of three playing members who have competed in at least
6 junior league matches with the same Charter Holder. The 9 game round
robin format will be used in the 8-ball team events. Each player will play each
player from the opposing team once. The team with the most points at the
end of the match will be declared the winner. If there is a tie in total points,
the teams will play the last round over as it stands on the scoresheet until a
winner is decided. Flip for the first break and alternate thereafter.
Calling of the 8-ball must be by the disc method in the following manner:
All divisions will be of the double elimination format with the finals bracket
participants starting with zero losses.
Singles Format
Disc Placement...
The disc must be completely within the first two diamonds on either side of the intended
pocket. (A Referee will make a ruling if the position is protested.)
It is not necessary to move or touch the disc if it is already at the intended pocket. If a
player shoots at the 8-ball and commits a legal shot and the 8-ball is not pocketed, the
game continues.
Team Roster
Race - 4 games/winners and losers
The “Official Team Roster” are the players listed on the Scoresheet/Computer.
All players must have competed in a minimum of 6 junior league matches.
The double elimination format will be used.
Safeties
Substitution Rule
A team may substitute players during a match if the following criteria are met:
- The opposing team captain must be notified before the start of the round in which the substitution is being made.
- A substitute player will not be allowed to play any opposing player more than once.
- Once a player has played, he/she must keep that same position unless removed for a round and reinstated in a later round.
Determining the Break
Team: Team captains will flip a coin prior to making the line-up. The winner
of the coin toss has a chance of being home or visiting team. The home team
will complete their line-up first each round. The teams will then break in accordance with the scoresheet.
Singles: Flip a coin to determine the first break and alternate thereafter.
Official Scoresheet
The Home Scoresheet is the official scoresheet and will be used to settle
any disputes. Both captains are responsible for the accuracy of the Home
scoresheet after each game.
A Safety can be played within the definition of a legal shot.
Start of Match
All matches will start at their posted time if the assigned table is available. If a player/
players is absent, the match must still begin and the absent player/players will have until
the end of that round to show up. If they are not there by the end of the round, the absent person/persons will lose that game 10-0. This rule is the same for all the rounds.
Played Wrong Player
In the event that wrong people have played or are playing each other, the following
procedure will be followed:
• If the game is completed, that score will be forwarded to the proper place that they are scheduled to play. That score will not count until it falls into the proper place.
• If the game is not completed, the captains will get the proper people to the table and restart the game.
• If a game is played between the same opponents for a second time during the match, the score of the second time does not count as long as the scoresheet is filled out properly prior to the round beginning.
It is both team captain’s responsibility to ensure that the proper players are playing each game before the round starts. Therefore, if one captain listed a player to play the same player a second time, the captain’s team who listed the wrong player will lose 10-0.
• Scoresheets may be filled out round by round.
8-On-The-Break
End of Match
If an 8-ball is pocketed on the break, the breaker may ask for a rerack or have
the 8-ball spotted and continue shooting. If the breaker scratches while pocketing the 8-ball on the break, the opposing player has the option of a rerack or
having the 8-ball spotted before beginning to shoot.
A match is considered over when a team can no longer mathematically win.
Rack Your Own Breaks
- Various Rack Systems will NOT be allowed.
Devices Are Not Allowed For Jump Shots
Call Pocket
In Call Pocket, obvious balls and pockets do not have to be indicated. It is the
opponent’s right to ask which ball and pocket if he/she is unsure of the shot.
Banks and combinations are not considered obvious and both the object ball
and the pocket must be called. When calling the shot, it is NEVER necessary
to indicate details such as the number of cushions, banks, kisses, caroms,
etc. Any balls pocketed on a foul remain pocketed, regardless of whether
they belong to the shooter or the opponent. If a shooter continually refuses
to inform his opponent, even when asked, the captains or tournament officials
should be informed. Continuous failure to verbally call the pocket can be
ruled unsportsmanlike conduct.
Forfeits
Team & Singles...
Be sure to read and be aware of the Forfeit Procedures that are posted in the Tournament
Room.
Scoring
If a game ends without a group of balls being legally determined, the winner receives ten
points and the opponent receives zero points.
Junior League players who have played in the VNEA
International Championships in Las Vegas will not
be eligible to compete in the 24th Annual International Junior Pool Championships.
Tournament Referees will be used and decisions will be final.
Please refer to the Rules booklet for other rules of play.

TO WIN - TO PLAY - TO LOVE
After 5 decades of playing billiards in all its forms (pool, carom,
snooker, and pyramid) I have come to realize an amazing solution for
truly “enjoying the roll” through the paper losses, disappointing rolls,
game setbacks, and other cue sport detours. No one is immune from
the aforementioned stumbling blocks to the pursuit of victory in our
table challenges and personal goals of becoming a champion; however, what makes the journey more palatable is when we understand
the purpose and perception of it all.
A few years ago I adopted a motto for our game and life experiences as follows:
TO WIN IS GREAT…
TO PLAY IS GREATER…
TO LOVE IS THE GREATEST…
Almost everyone wants to circle a “game won” or move the “bead
on the wire” after a hard fought game victory. And, almost everyone
desires to continue in this fulfilling manner until the final ball has
dropped and the next bracket match is undertaken in a similar manner.
An eventual tournament win, and then another, and so the story goes.
Oh, Yes... TO WIN IS GREAT!
There are some individuals who just want to play the game - some for
the 1st time ever and some who desire the “1st time ever”, but due
to physical restrictions may never realize that dream. Then, you have
those that continue to actually play the game and slowly, if ever reach
champion status, but have a spirit for the game that defies logic - smiling before striking the cue ball and sharing the joy of simply playing the game with anyone who will listen to their gentle persuasion.
Oh, Yes... TO PLAY IS GREATER!
And, then, there are a select few who seem to have a special attraction to the game whether they “win or play”. For this unique group of individuals the
“click of the pool balls” and the “color of each ball” presents a subliminal attraction and special “love” of the game that resembles the very 1st time the cue,
the balls, and the table became part of our life journey. Every shot
becomes a favorite shot and every ball missed becomes a “make in
disguise” regardless of who is shooting it. This type of person could
continue to “play the game”, even if they never “win the game” again.
Oh, Yes... TO LOVE IS THE GREATEST!
Until (and after) the next time, when…

Tournament Tips That Can Make A Difference
By Jerry Briesath
As you know playing and winning in a tournament requires the utmost in concentration and focus.
The better players start this mental part of the game long before the tournament date arrives.
Here are some tips to help you do your best when the pressure is on...
1. Get a good nights sleep and don’t drink too much.
2. Concentrate on every shot and remember, there is no such thing as an easy shot.
3. When your opponent is at the table watch every move he or she makes. Watch how the layout
changes as the balls are moved around the table.
4. Don’t make the mistake of getting to the tournament and slowing your game way down trying to be
more careful. Try to maintain the same pace and time allowed for each shot as you normally do
when you are playing well.
5. Don’t get overly upset at yourself if you make a bad mistake. Your opponent will probably do the
same thing very soon. Remember, all you have to do is make one less mistake then your opponent
to win.
6. If you win, shake your opponent’s hand with a smile and say something nice. If you lose do the
same thing.
Good Luck - Jerry
