ROUNDABOUT

From The Rectory
Speechless at Easter
When was the last time you were totally stopped in your
tracks? Perhaps it was something beautiful or amazing
that did it, or maybe it was something tragic that left you
dumfounded and struggling to grasp reality. Three women
once went to a cave to do a necessary but rather unpleasant job. They were not sure how they were going to get in.
But that proved unproblematic, as the entrance stone had
been removed before they got there. They were expecting
to find a corpse as they had brought spices to anoint a
body. But what they found stopped them in their tracks
and the world has never been the same since.
It all depends really on whether it is true or not. I wrote
about that in “Roundabout” this time last year, so I’m not
going to repeat to you why I think the evidence for the
bodily resurrection of Jesus stands up to scrutiny. There
are some people who think it cannot be true. Dead people
don’t rise again, they conclude. But I think there are many
more who suspect it might be true but they remain unmoved by it. They just take it in their stride, leave it for
another day, ignore it even, and carry on with life regardless.
It is a curious thing that while the general trend of church
attendance in the UK is falling, people’s interest in religion

21 members were welcomed to the meeting in Exbourne
village hall, on Thursday 7 March by the president, Jane
Stewart. The speaker for the evening was Paul Rendell.
He showed beautiful slides of all the flora and fauna
which can be found on Dartmoor, from red deer to flowers no bigger than a finger nail. He answered questions
and was thanked by Gloria Sherbourne.
After tea and biscuits, the business of the evening was
dealt with. The Jumble Sale had been a great success with
around £290 being raised, with the nearly new dress rail
being very successful. Margaret Cleveland was thanked
for organising and demonstrating at a Rag Rug workshop,
which was held in the village hall. It attracted 5 ladies
who were not members. The competitions for the Group
Meeting at Iddesleigh on 16 April and for Okehampton
Show on 8 August were discussed. Torrington WI has
invited members to meet them for coffee and a chat at
Rosemoor on 1 May. Plans are well under way for the
Dementia Awareness Day to be held in the village hall on
24 May from 10am to 3pm. The WI is providing the
lunch. A Walk around footpaths of Exbourne, with tea to
follow has been arranged for 5 June. This to be advertised
in the WI Newsletter for members of other WIs to join in,
if they wish.
The next meeting will be in Sampford Courtenay village
hall on Thursday 4 April at 7.30pm. The speaker will be
David Miles talking about the Garden House. All welcome.

NORTH TAWTON
Afternoon WI.
WI News March 2013
As our speaker today explained – it is easy to
despair with the situation in Africa – however,
Jenny Reynolds was here to tell us how the charity
‘Send a Cow’ has made and continues to make a
significant difference to the lives of communities in
seven African countries.
The charity was formed 21 years ago when a
group of Christian farmers got together with a
shared aim of helping farmers in Africa – and
initially they did indeed ‘send a cow,’ in fact they
sent 30 pedigree cows [all in calf] out to Uganda in
the first instance. Nowadays, however, they no
longer send actual livestock but, as Jenny said, it’s
a really good conversation starter!
Send a Cow helps groups of people who may be
widowed, orphaned or disabled by giving them a
cow, a goat, piglets, chickens or other useful items
such as seeds and beehives. In return the
recipients must promise to pass on an equivalent
gift to another needy family whether it’s the first
female calf, saplings, seeds or skills, thus each gift
starts a chain of giving that continues to grow,
allowing families to become donors themselves,
restoring lost confidence and esteem.
Apart from the actual gifts Send a Cow ensures
groups receive training in animal welfare and
husbandry, social development and sustainable
organic agriculture thus allowing them to make the
best use of materials which are already there.
Communities are taught how to store and use
water by building large water storage pits ensuring
that water is easily accessible for the family,
livestock and crops all year round.
Part of their training programme involves helping
farmers to set up small businesses and showing
them how to care for the soil and protect their land
from climate change.
Jenny had brought a selection of slides to illustrate
her talk and this included examples of families who
have benefited from the help of Send a Cow –
Helen Kongi was a widow struggling to bring up
four children, after receiving a cow from the charity
she has turned her life around – she is now an
organic gardener, her living conditions have
dramatically improved, she has created a training
centre, lectured at The Eden Project and spoken
on Gardeners’ World and Woman’s Hour. Just one
example of how this particular charity is working to
transform the lives, livelihoods and wellbeing of
these rural communities.
The business bit was once again packed with
dates for the diary, including another trip to the
cinema – this time for a private screening of The
Great Gatsby – unfortunately Hugh Jackman and
ROUNDABOUT
Russell Crowe were not available but Leonardo
DiCaprio was so I guess I’ll just have to make do –
[husband has just said he thought Leonardo
drowned on the Titanic – he’s obviously not much
of a fan]
Our Birthday Lunch was a huge success [thank
you Adrienne] with 41 ladies attending - I hope I
didn’t embarrass the young waiter when, after enquiring which pudding I wanted, I apparently said
‘the largest please’ this was obviously husband’s
influence and I accept no responsibility for this
whatsoever.
This may come as a huge shock to some of you [it
certainly did to us!] but North Tawton WI won it’s
heat of the Devon Federation Quiz [and no – the
questions were NOT too easy] so we find
ourselves off to Clyst St Mary at the end of March
for the final – I have this awful feeling that I’m
going along just to make up the numbers and to
make sure that all the half time cake is consumed
[ yet another trait generously passed on from
husband who is the equivalent of a Dyson when it
comes to cake]
See you next month,
Sue Knott.
Next meeting – Weds 3rd April
Speaker – George Williams – Working in Broadmoor as a Nurse
Annual Exhibition of Embroidery and Textiles
The Cheriton Bishop Group of West Country
Embroiderers will be holding their Annual Exhibition of
Embroidery and Textiles at Cheriton Bishop Village Hall
in April.
This year the group is making a few changes, one being
that the event will take place over two days and provide
more people with an opportunity to enjoy it. The exhibition will be on Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14
from 10:30a.m. until 4.00p.m. on both days.
The second change is the title of the exhibition which now
projects a wider range of content so that visitors will find a
greater range of exhibits produced by members. Over the
weekend many members will be giving demonstrations
and providing members of the public with the opportunity
to try various techniques for themselves. The exhibition
will once again include a wide variety of stallholders selling items of equipment associated with sewing and textiles. As usual, there will be the ever popular wide range of
light refreshments available throughout the days. The
group members are well-known for their high standard of
work and many have formed new and welcome friendships
through meeting monthly. All those with an interest in
embroidery or textiles are made welcome at those
meetings and the exhibition provides visitors with the
opportunity of discussing them with members; and perhaps
being tempted to consider joining the group.
For further information on the group or the exhibition,
please call Nicky Westlake on 01837 82517.

Change of plans for Rose Cottage, as already agreed with

There being no further submissions relating to the

will take no further action.
The Chairman reported that we have succeeded in

further £500 has been applied for from Northern Links
as they have not used their quota.

Mrs Coventry has completed the inspection. The Council

Coventry has offered to prune a tree that needs cutting

The Church wall is in a poor state at one point. The
Council has asked the PCC to put their insurers on notice

NORTH TAWTON PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP (NTPPG)
Bits and Pieces
Evening Surgery; Telephone System; Minor Injury Service; Wallingbrook
Health Group (WHG) Charter; NTPPG Membership; Suggestions
Evening Surgery
We are pleased to let you know pre-booked appointments are now available at our North
Tawton Surgery on Tuesday evenings between 6:30pm and 7:30 pm.
Telephone System
WGH has produced a handy telephone guide (one side of A4 ) for using the telephone appointment system. The guide will allow you to quickly decide how to use the numbered options to get to the service you want immediately or alternatively how to be connected
directly to an adviser by holding the line. Copies of these will be made available to patients
at the surgery over the coming weeks.
Minor Injury Service
WHG offers a Minor Injury Service, available at the Chulmleigh and North Tawton GP Surgeries. This service includes " a quick, efficient service for cuts, falls, minor head injuries,
burns, scalds and foreign bodies if they have occurred in the last 48 hours…". WHG advise
that in the case of a minor injury, a patient should come immediately to the surgery. The
service is only available during surgery hours. Remember you can use the Minor Injuries
Units situated at Okehampton, North Devon or Exeter hospitals.
Charter
Along with all Health Groups WHG has produced a Patient Charter. The charter explains
WHG's aim " .. to work with our communities to provide the highest quality of healthcare
possible and to promote healthy living; recognising that each individual’s health and wellbeing are of equal importance.". A copy of the Charter will be placed in the NTPPG folder in
the North Tawton Surgery waiting room. For Internet users a copy can be downloaded
directly from http://www.wallingbrook.co.uk/practices/wallingbrook/Patient-Charterlatest-version-130213.pdf
Other information regarding WHG can be found at http://www.wallingbrook.co.uk/.
In particular the middle of the right hand column contains a link to a page that includes
further background information about all the PPGs. These can be looked at on the website
or downloaded.
Patient Participation Group (PPG) Membership
There are many areas of health care of interest to different age groups of patients and to
family needs. For example we are planning to have a presentation on dementia by the
Alzheimer Society later this year (more details in next month's roundabout). Your
suggestions and ideas for other talks are very welcome.
There are many changes occurring in the overall operation of our National Health Service. If
you are interested in how WHG is responding to these changes and how they affect you and
your family, you can become a member of our local North Tawton group. Before making any
decision you would be very welcome to meet up with us informally over a cup of coffee. You
can either email us on [email protected] and someone will be in touch, leave a
message in one of the suggestion boxes in the NT pharmacy or in the NT surgery, or fill in a
form available from the Wallingbrook website. Times of meetings can be arranged to suit.
Suggestions
Lastly, when using the suggestion boxes please remember to provide a contact telephone
number or address as well as your name so we can get back to you.

HELP
We are a group of local lady tennis players who play
(usually between 4 and 8 of us) on Tuesday and
Thursday afternoons (14.00 to 16.00). The court we use
will soon no longer be available and so we need to find
another court to borrow or rent.
If you can help please phone Nathalie on 01837 82541.
National Commemoration August 2014
A National commemoration of the outbreak of the
1914-1919 Great War is being planned.
We are fortunate in that North Tawton is unique in
having a complete record of the men who took part
in that war and of the 59 who lost their lives.
It will be an opportunity to gather an archive of
those people and events.
I write to ask the help of any interested people or
any knowledge to help in this project. We know the
names, cemeteries and memorials, we also have records of where the men lived but, like mine, many
former North Tawton families have dispersed over
the years. There will be families living in houses in
the area with little or no knowledge of what happened to young men who left in those war years. It
might well be that you have, or intend to visit battlefields in Europe and can help with photographs or
information.
Please contact any British Legion member or myself
for further details or information. I would be willing
to meet any group or individual to talk about the
project and discuss what is needed.
I can be contacted by e mail [email protected] or
01395 273065.

ROUNDABOUT
Amateur musicians wanted – update.
Shortly before Christmas, in an earlier version of this
fine periodical…
…maybe you recall my rambling request for ‘for-fun’
musicians? Our intent being to swell the ranks and diversity of Bondleigh’s stumbling players and bring an
element of order where chaos has reigned freely for
many a year?
Well, I’m pleased to announce that we’ve made an encouraging start – though we still require further musicians to step forward.
It was a dark and stormy night… in late January 2013
when our very first get-together took place. A nervous
gathering of around a dozen of us (I never could count),
coming together at a secret coffee & grog shop location
to begin our rocky, folky, bluegrass, orchestral
(whatever) journey to musical nirvana. Thankfully we
have secured Richard, as our musical director, to aid us
in our line of travel. Therefore, whilst tears formed in his
eyes (maybe the ropes were too tight?), the challenge of
herding us (musical) cats has begun. Indeed, as yet, just
four practice sessions in, there has been very little blood
spilt. Just some red wine, that’s all it was, honest.
Anyway, here I am again, calling for more like-minded
musical souls to take up this chance of an enriched (there
are sometimes biscuits) lifetime experience. So please
don’t hold back, whatever your competence level
(beginner to expert), musical style preference, or whether you read music or play by ear – just come along and
give us a try. We currently meet on a fortnightly basis
but this may change as we get closer to the Albert Hall
concert. (Note: This article does not contain nuts but the
odd bit of artistic licence may have crept in).
So, if you’d like to get involved… please hear more by
contacting either:
Tamsin: [email protected]
Tel 01837 82334
or myself: [email protected]
Tel 01837 82980

ROUNDABOUT
North Tawton Community Fire Station
(Reprinted from the March edition of Roundabout)
Please remember to test your smoke alarms regularly on
a weekly basis. Replace the batteries annually and ensure
that everything is in correct working order. The statistics
of fatalities in domestic fires at properties with no
working smoke alarm is double that of homes that have
operational alarm systems. A smoke alarm is a cheap and
effective way of alerting you in the event of a fire, giving
you precious time to escape.
Please Keep Safe!
Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Last month’s edition of Roundabout contained very
sound advice from the Fire Service regarding the
checking of smoke/fire alarms.
I would go further and strongly recommend fitting a
carbon monoxide detector.
Whilst we may be able to see smoke or a fire when an
alarm goes off, we cannot detect carbon monoxide at all,
hence it’s called the “Silent Killer”.
It is so deadly we measure it in parts per million!!
Tip out a bag of sugar and remove 50 grains, This in relation to carbon monoxide is enough to make you feel
unwell. Just over 1% carbon monoxide in a room will
kill in between 1 and 3 minutes.
Carbon monoxide alarms cost around £20 from DIY
stores or Plumbers merchants.
A small cost to save a life.
