This means that not only do we sort our waste according to Nova Scotia’s waste management strategy, but we work to reduce our waste too – especially when it comes to plastic. We encourage our volunteers and performers to bring their own reusable water bottles and you can too! Festival-goers can refill water bottles at water stations that are available at various venues. Of course, there are recyclable cups available for your use as well. Green Team personnel will be on hand (often nearby one of our many recycling stations) to answer any questions you might have about staying GREEN at the Deep Roots Music Festival! Smoke-Free Campus Acadia University is an entirely tobacco-free campus. The use of any tobacco products is prohibited. Those who wish to smoke are asked to leave the property in order to do so. There are areas on the edge of campus where you may smoke in accordance with the Town of Wolfville regulations. We greatly appreciate your cooperation and understanding concerning this matter. 12 13 PARADE INFORMATION PARADE INFORMATION The Fresh Beats Rhythm Parade! Our mission is to create meaningful connections between artists and audiences, and our free events are an excellent way to do that! 2015 Valley Arts Award winner The Valley Arts Award is presented each year at the Deep Roots Music Festival to honour someone who has worked for the development and/or the promotion of the arts in the Annapolis Valley, and has made a significant long-term contribution. Aylesford singer/ songwriter Hughie McDonell is this year’s recipient of the Valley Arts Award. His bouncy “Shopping at Frenchy’s” song and his tribute to the late Harley Lawrence underscore his popular blend of finely crafted, heartfelt, and easy-on-the-ear compositions. Hughie had a busy summer since he is currently devoting himself full time to music. He performed at the Kingston Steer BBQ, the High Tide Festival in Harbourville, a concert in Auburn, and travelled to Quebec and Ontario for concerts. Hughie’s back-up musicians describe him as a dedicated performer, who writes songs about fundamental, grassroots topics. Like previous award winner Chet Brown, Hughie often performs at benefit concerts. His newest CD is entitled Last Mile Before Home and it displays his relaxed and down-to-earth style, which can switch from old fashioned to driving country. Hughie comes from a large, musical farming family in Cornwall, Ontario, where his father sang and played the guitar. Hughie loved music from an early age. The BackYard Devils Spondored by Friends of the Festival • thebackyarddevils.com Lead singer and lyricist Erik Arsenault decided to start a dirty country and bluegrass band with his brother Remi (vocals, bass). They recruited Chris Belliveau (guitar), a talented guitar player, and Dillon Robicheau (mandolin, banjo) to help create the vision. With a swinging guitar rhythm, doghouse bass slaps, smashing guitar solos, and lightning quick banjo and mandolin lines, The BackYard Devils hammered down their own sound in an old-fashioned style, just like the brothers had planned. Their self-titled first album (2011) won three 2011 Music NB Awards. Their second album (2014) is called Honky Tonk Heartbreaker. 30 ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES The Boxcar Boys Sponsored by Roselawn Lodging • theboxcarboys.ca The Boxcar Boys deliver a veritable gumbo of original oldstyle jazz and folk music with dashes of klezmer and country thrown into the mix. Their performances are joyous acoustic celebrations featuring six inimitable musicians on clarinet, sousaphone, fiddle, trombone, accordion, and washboard. Their debut album Don’t Be Blue placed them on the EJazzNews list of Best Canadian Jazz Bands and their sophomore release Rye Whiskey earned them a nomination for Instrumental Group of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards (2013). They have just released their third album entitled Cicada Ball. Jonathan Byrd Sponsored by Town of Wolfville • jonathanbyrd.com Jonathan Byrd, a seventh generation Carolinian, has journeyed far and wide in his musical career. He has constantly evolved in new musical directions and each incarnation has proven to be masterful. He started touring as a solo performer full-time in 2000, and in 2003, at the Kerrville Folk Festival, won the New Folk Competition. He recorded and collaborated on albums with a group called Dromedary, recorded an album in 7 hours with Diana Jones in a barn in Nashville, and recorded Cackalack in 2011, which went to #1 on the Roots Music Reports folk radio chart. 31 ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES The Chimney Swifts Sponsored by Friends of the Festival • www.thechimneyswifts.com The Chimney Swifts, four musicians with an extraordinary passion for music, have been playing together for over four years. She has released a number of albums, in the process garnering several Juno and ECMA nominations, not to mention many rave reviews along the way. Her latest album, They Promised You Mercy, was nominated for the 2015 Roots and Traditional Album of the Year Juno Award. The album is poised, focused, and raises the lyrical bar with its unrivalled eloquence. Although previous albums were predominantly acoustic, this one moves into the realm of electric guitar, though with “folk” still underpinning the music. 32 ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES Durham County Poets Sponsored by CapFlex Networking • durhamcountypoets.com Durham County Poets are Kevin Harvey (lead vocals, harmonica), David Whyte (electric & acoustic guitars), Neil Elsmore (acoustic & slide guitars), Carl Rufh (upright bass), and James Preimel (percussion). They first performed at the Branches & Roots Folk Music Festival in 2011 and soon after released their debut album, Where the River Flows, in 2012. In 2014, amidst a busy year of shows, interviews and even some television, their second album Chikkaboodah Stew was released.
