ABOUT DEEP ROOTS
The Deep Roots Music Cooperative
Musical roots stretch deep and wide, twining people
together in a shared experience of culture and heritage. Members of the Deep Roots Music Cooperative
are twined together by the fun of sharing music. Our
mission is to create meaningful connections between
cultures, community groups, artists, and audiences
by offering music-related events, programs, and the
annual Canadian Deep Roots Music Festival. And while
we’re at it – have a lot of fun!
Become a Member!
Deep Roots is always looking for new members and volunteers. We invite you to be a part of the Cooperative
and Festival. When you become a member of the Deep
Roots Music Cooperative, you can sit back and relax for
you will be among friends – especially if you like music,
have a sense of humour, and like being around people
who enjoy a good time. We’re down to earth here,
and we get together every now and then to enjoy each
other’s company and sing a song or two.
Call the Deep Roots office at 902-542-ROOT (7668), or
visit our website at www.deeprootsmusic.ca for more
information on how you can become a member of Deep
Roots and/or a volunteer for next year’s Deep Roots
Music Festival.
We are proud to sponsor

WELCOME
From Deep Roots
From the Town of Wolfville
Welcome to the Twelfth Annual Deep Roots Music Festival!
It is indeed a distinct pleasure for me to welcome the Deep Roots Music
Festival back to Wolfville for its twelfth consecutive year. May I take this
opportunity to extend a warm welcome to all those who have come to Wolfville
to enjoy what will clearly be an entertaining and educational four days.
The dedicated volunteers who have worked so incredibly hard to make this
festival such a success over the years deserve a round of applause for their
commitment to this growing and exciting performing arts project. On behalf
of everyone – staff, council, and the entire community – I offer thanks to the
Deep Roots Music Cooperative members whose efforts are so appreciated.
The Town of Wolfville is pleased to once again be a major sponsor for this
Festival and we look forward to future partnerships. Enjoy the Festival. Enjoy
Wolfville.
With sincere thanks,
Jeff Cantwell
Mayor, Town of Wolfville
It’s harvest time in the Valley and there is no better place to be. Here at Deep
Roots we have been busy harvesting as well and we hope that you will enjoy
the superior crop of musicians we are presenting.
All year long our Programmer, Dave Carmichael, has been planting the seeds
for this bumper crop of talent. Lisa Hammett Vaughan, our Festival Coordinator, and her team have been working diligently to ensure that Dave’s work
is ready for you. From folk legend Sylvia Tyson to relative newcomers The
Chimney Swifts, we look forward to serving up our bounty of wonderful music.
Please enjoy the fruits of our labour, and by the way, if my food metaphors
have tweaked your appetite, feel free to visit one or more of the many fine
restaurants that sponsor our Festival. Bon Appetit!

GREEN FESTIVAL
A Message from the Green Team
Deep Roots prides itself on being a “Green” festival.
This means that not only do we sort our waste according to Nova Scotia’s waste management strategy, but
we work to reduce our waste too – especially when it
comes to plastic. We encourage our volunteers and
performers to bring their own reusable water bottles
and you can too! Festival-goers can refill water bottles at
water stations that are available at various venues.
Of course, there are recyclable cups available for your
use as well. Green Team personnel will be on hand
(often nearby one of our many recycling stations) to answer any questions you might have about staying GREEN
at the Deep Roots Music Festival!
Smoke-Free Campus
Acadia University is an entirely tobacco-free campus.
The use of any tobacco products is prohibited. Those
who wish to smoke are asked to leave the property in
order to do so. There are areas on the edge of campus
where you may smoke in accordance with the Town of
Wolfville regulations. We greatly appreciate your cooperation and understanding concerning this matter.

VALLEY ARTS AWARD
FREE SHOWS & WORKSHOPS
Hughie McDonell
Enjoy lots of FREE music and events at the Deep Roots
Music Festival. Our mission is to create meaningful
connections between artists and audiences, and our free
events are an excellent way to do that!
2015 Valley Arts Award winner
The Valley Arts Award is presented each year at the Deep
Roots Music Festival to honour
someone who has worked for
the development and/or the
promotion of the arts in the
Annapolis Valley, and has made
a significant long-term contribution. Aylesford singer/
songwriter Hughie McDonell is this year’s recipient
of the Valley Arts Award. His bouncy “Shopping at
Frenchy’s” song and his tribute to the late Harley Lawrence underscore his popular blend of finely crafted,
heartfelt, and easy-on-the-ear compositions.
Hughie had a busy summer since he is currently devoting himself full time to music. He performed at the
Kingston Steer BBQ, the High Tide Festival in Harbourville, a concert in Auburn, and travelled to Quebec and
Ontario for concerts. Hughie’s back-up musicians describe him as a dedicated performer, who writes songs
about fundamental, grassroots topics. Like previous
award winner Chet Brown, Hughie often performs at
benefit concerts.
His newest CD is entitled Last Mile Before Home and it
displays his relaxed and down-to-earth style, which can
switch from old fashioned to driving country. Hughie
comes from a large, musical farming family in Cornwall,
Ontario, where his father sang and played the guitar.
Hughie loved music from an early age. He has been a
Maritimer for some time and raised his three children
in the Valley.

a turquoise and yellow “Acadia”
sign that, like Al himself, has

Market
(behind Festival Theatre)
Built nearly 100 years ago as an

houses our Farmers’ Market.
Listen to Deep Roots performers as you shop for local fresh

heart of town. The Fresh Beats
Rhythm Parade begins and ends
here and all performances and

this venue is home to all of our
Main Stage shows throughout
the weekend.

Matt Andersen
Sponsored by K-Rock 89.3 • mattandersen.ca
Matt Andersen, a powerhouse performer with a soul-filled voice, has
built a formidable following the old

word-of-mouth. On his latest album Weightless, Andersen
shares co-writing credits with the likes of Joel Plaskett,
David Myles, Dave Gunning, Tom Wilson, Ryan Hupman, and
Keith Mullins. Matt says “If I write a whole album by myself,
it sounds like me too much… I realize I write better when
I write with someone… going back and forth with these
people, we got the best out of the idea (that) we could.”

The BackYard Devils

Lead singer and lyricist Erik Arsenault decided to start a dirty country
and bluegrass band with his brother
Remi (vocals, bass). They recruited
Chris Belliveau (guitar), a talented
guitar player, and Dillon Robicheau (mandolin, banjo) to help
create the vision. With a swinging guitar rhythm, doghouse
bass slaps, smashing guitar solos, and lightning quick banjo
and mandolin lines, The BackYard Devils hammered down
their own sound in an old-fashioned style, just like the
brothers had planned. Their self-titled first album (2011)
won three 2011 Music NB Awards. Their second album (2014)
