Welcome to Sidwell Friends Schools’ Auction 2007! Let’s
and have a great time as we celebrate Sidwell Friends.
Raise
the
Roof
The Auction would not be possible without the generosity of all the merchants
and businesses as well as SFS parents and former parents, alumni, trustees,
faculty, and staff who purchase advertisements, provide donations and attend
the Auction. This catalog is filled with a fantastic array of items available to us
through their generosity. We are sure there will be many items that tempt you,
and remember, your participation this evening will enhance and increase the
availability of the first rate education offered at Sidwell Friends School. The
Auction is the culmination of hours of teamwork by a dedicated group of parent volunteers; we thank all of you who have worked so hard to make tonight a
success.
As in years past, a highlight of the evening is our Fund-a-Scholar appeal. Funda-Scholar allows participants to give directly to Sidwell Friends Schools’
Scholarship Fund during the Live Auction. The enthusiasm of the Sidwell
Friends community for this event has always been overwhelming, and we look
forward to an even greater success this evening.
Our community should be proud of its commitment to provide access to
Sidwell Friends’ first-rate education. At Sidwell Friends, one in five students
receives financial aid. The average tuition grant is among the highest of our peer
schools. Sidwell also provides non-tuition support such as transportation assistance, books, and field trip assistance, among other support that make Sidwell
Friends’ rich program available to all.
We hope that you bid often and bid high tonight and that our tangible success
reflects your enthusiasm for Sidwell Friends School. However, we will really
judge the success of the evening by the smiles on your faces and the sound of
your laughter as we Raise the Roof and Build a Scholar!
It has been our pleasure to chair the Auction 2007. We are very lucky to have
a tremendous group of parents supporting us, and we have enjoyed working with
all of you. Thank you for coming together to benefit our children and to support the school that does so much to “Build a Scholar.”

• All sales are final. Items may not be exchanged and no money will be refunded. All
items are sold “as is.”
• Unless otherwise noted, items and services are good for one year and must be used by
April 22, 2008.
• Unless specified, dates and times are to be arranged at the mutual convenience of both
the donor and the buyer. Buyers are responsible for making arrangements in advance,
checking expiration dates and restrictions on contracts and/or gift certificates, and for
retaining the original paperwork until the donation has been redeemed.
• Catalog descriptions of items include estimates of the item’s fair market value. All
values are estimates only and are not guaranteed by the School. Values are as declared
by the donors.
• By his/her purchase, the buyer waives any claim for liability against the School or its
employees, the Auction volunteers, the Auctioneer, and the donor of the property or
services. Neither the School, the Auctioneer, nor the donor is responsible for any
personal injuries or damages to property that may result from the use of property or
services sold.
• Items will be given only to those individuals showing proof of purchase.
• Getaways: Resort and family properties are not available to student groups or minors
unaccompanied by adults. Commercial vacations and accommodations require advance
reservations; offer is good on a space available basis; unless otherwise noted, meals,

alcoholic beverages, taxes, and gratuities are generally not included.
• Services: Gratuities for stylists, technicians, trainers and other service providers are
generally not included in gift certificates. Please remember to show your appreciation
accordingly.
• Tickets/Passes: Event, performances, and museum tickets/passes that do not specify a
date may require advance reservations and be subject to availability.
AUCTIONPAY
We are excited to have the services of AuctionPay allowing the Auction Committee to
quickly attach your auction night purchases with our invoicing/receipt software. At registration, volunteers will swipe your credit card into the AuctionPay terminal. When you are the
successful bidder of an auction item, your credit card number will immediately be associated
with the purchase of that item, thus increasing our efficiency the night of the auction as
well as in the few days after. AuctionPay helps guarantee less processing error. We hope you
will enjoy the benefits of AuctionPay!
SILENT AUCTION BIDDING PROCEDURES
• Bid sheets describing each item are displayed near each item. Bid amounts are preprinted on the bid sheets. The bidder should print his/her bid number next to the
amount at which he/she wants to bid.
• In the event of a dispute, the Auction Committee or its designated representative will
have sole and final discretion to determine the winning bidder.
• An Auction official will nullify your bid if you are blocking or otherwise obstructing
another bidder from access to a table at any point during the Silent Auction OR if you
bid after the announcement of the close of bidding. Only an Auction official may nullify
a bid. Questions concerning the Silent Auction should be referred to an Auction official.
9
• The Auction Committee reserves the right to lower minimum bids, modify closing
times, and to withdraw any item from sale prior to bidding.
• The highest bid on the bid card for each item at the closing constitutes the winning
bid. A bid matching the guaranteed purchase price automatically wins the Silent
Auction item. No bid may be entered above this amount.
LIVE AUCTION BIDDING PROCEDURES
• The Live Auction will begin promptly at the conclusion of the Signature Silent Section
and will continue without interruption until all items have been auctioned.
• To enter a bid, the bidder raises his/her card. Bidspotters will be assigned throughout
the room to assist the Auctioneer in recognizing bids.
• The highest bidder acknowledged by the Auctioneer will be the purchaser. In the event
of any dispute, the Auctioneer will have sole and final discretion to determine the
successful purchaser.
• If the Auctioneer determines that an opening bid is not commensurate with the value
of the item or not equal to the minimum set by the donor, the Auctioneer may
withdraw the item for sale.
• The purchaser may be asked to sign an acknowledgement sheet at the time of purchase
noting his/her bid number and winning bid amount.
• Payment for Live Auction items must be received the night of the Auction.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
The success of the Auction depends on the goodwill of the donors and on careful observance by the buyers of terms stated on bid sheets and gift certificates. BUYERS
SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO ALTER THE TERMS OF A DONATION. The
District of Columbia sales tax will not be charged on any tangible items you purchase at the
auction tonight (Act 15-250 of the D.C. law 15-85, March 10, 2004).
IMPORTANT TAX INFORMATION
Federal income tax laws and regulations impose important requirements concerning the
documentation you must have in order to substantiate the deductibility of certain charitable
contributions. Auction purchases are tax deductible only to the extent that the amount paid
for an item exceeds the fair market value of that item. Further, the Internal Revenue
Service now requires charitable organizations to provide receipts listing the fair market
value of each item. At the Auction and in the weeks to follow, you will be provided with a
receipt that will list both the fair market value of each item purchased and the amount you
paid for each item. Please save the receipt for your records in order to substantiate any
income tax deductions you may take as a result of your Auction purchases. Buyers and
donors should consult with their tax advisers for definitive advice concerning deductibility.

Sidwell Friends is committed to achieving and maintaining a diverse, highcaliber student body, yet many families cannot afford the full cost of attending the School. For that reason, we hold this annual auction to benefit student financial aid. Here is an opportunity for everyone to contribute to the
Sidwell Friends School financial aid program by making a fully taxdeductible contribution. When the Auctioneer mentions the amount you
would like to donate, simply raise your bid paddle high. Your contribution
will then be charged to your auction account. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our scholars.

One of the greatest vacation escapes in the United States is Sea Island,
Georgia, known for its beauty, hospitality and timeless Southern grace! For
the week you will stay in an original 1920's cottage designed by the same
architect who designed The Cloister. Cottage 24 enjoys many of the details
found in all of Addison Mizner's work–balconies, a quirky staircase leading

the overall, traditional Spanish influence. A children's wing on the ground
floor has two large bedrooms sharing a bath. Each of the bedrooms has pocket doors that can be closed to divide each bedroom into two and give privacy
for older children or parents and toddlers. An upstairs sitting room with fireplace and balcony provides a separate, private retreat for the upstairs bedrooms. Guests and family will enjoy discovering the fanciful accessories,
lighting, furnishings and artwork adorning the common areas. The placement and design of the pool in the entry courtyard and the colorful stone
entry path set the stage for a unique experience in Cottage 24, all within a
short walk to the resort facilities and only one lot removed from the beach.
You may use the resort facilities for a small fee each day. There are four bedrooms, 3 full baths and your stay will be for one week. Date to be mutually

Four Signed Books
Don't miss the opportunity to bid on these four signed books: The Secret
Man by Bob Woodward provides an intriguing if not fully satisfying portrait
of the real-life relationship between Mr. Woodward and Mr. Felt, and it reaffirms the vital role that confidential sources play in keeping the public
informed. His second book, State of Denial explores the political carnage and
bureaucratic infighting prompted by the September 11 attacks. Woodward
dissects the Bush administration's conduct of the war in Iraq. The picture
isn't a pretty one, and Woodward's disarming, matter-of-fact prose makes his
page-turning account more powerful still. If you need a lighter read try
Secrets of the Lean Plate Club by Sally Squires who has created an easy stepby-step approach to losing weight and keeping it off. If you are constantly
searching for the best place to eat in DC, then this last book is for you. The
Washington Post Dining Guide by Tom Sietsema is a guide on where to eat

Scotch Tasting
Scotch Whisky has long been known for it's fiery taste and the energetic people who
bring this magical spirit to life. Come learn about the intricacies and care that go
into making each single malt scotch whisky the unique and powerful spirit that it
is. During this evening of whisky and friends, we will take a tour around Scotland
and learn about the Classic Malts, 6 of the finest single malts that Scotland has
produced. From the soft lowlands that create the flavors of Dalwhinnie to the peaty
marshes that help to flavor the burly whisky, Lagavulin, the land lends itself to each
whisky in ways you can only imagine. The evening’s tasting will be lead by
Stephanie Lewin. Stephanie was part of the original marketing team who brought
these scotches into the United States in the late 1980s. Trained by the distillery
managers of each of the Classic Malts and by the master blender of Johnnie Walker
Black Label, Stephanie's experience, knowledge and amazing anecdotes promise to

Sailing Lessons
Learn the points of racing from top racing sailors Alison Fritz ’12, Elizabeth
Siegal ’12 and Molly Bernstein ’09. They can teach you the basics of sailing and racing--knots, points of racing, parts of a boat, good skippering,
reading the wind and water, navigational instruments, boat maintenance,
water safety and guidelines and generally just get you excited about summer
sailing. These girls train on the cold New England Atlantic waters six hours
a day for much of the summer, and they are happy to tailor this 2 to 3 hour
lesson to your skill set. Good for a group of one to five young sailors. The
location of the lesson will depend on the students’ sailing abilities. It will not
necessarily take place on a boat. Please use by October 22, 2007.
