Gregor Gorsic, Pastor (815) 886-4165 ext. 317 My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle! As we celebrate the First Sunday of Advent, the beginning of the new Church Year, we also celebrate the Feast Day of our Parish Patron Saint, St. Andrew the Apostle (November 30th). After decades and centuries of preparation, St. Andrew first heard the call from Jesus of Nazareth to come and follow Him. St. Andrew eventually recognized that Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, the Anointed One, our King. A fisherman from Bethsaida, a Galilean town, Andrew (a Greek name meaning “manly”) was a devout, zealous disciple of John, the Baptist. One day, Jesus came from Galilee to the River Jordan to be baptized by John. Andrew was overwhelmed when John, upon seeing Jesus, proclaimed, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” His conversion to Jesus was spontaneous and immediate. He hurried home to his brother, Peter, to share his discovery that “We have found the Messiah.” Andrew is considered the “first-called” apostle. It was he who found the boy with the fives loaves and two fishes right before the miraculous feeding of the 5,000. Andrew was crucified and died on an Xshaped cross. He is a Patron Saint of Scotland, Greece, Russia, fishermen and sailors. We all celebrate in a great chorus of thanksgiving for all the gifts, blessings, and graces bestowed on the people of St. Andrew now for 55 years! Its success is due to the generous contributions of all the people who helped strengthen and energized the parish: founding parishioners, current members, new arrivals, priests and deacons, parish organizations, faithful employees and unselfish volunteers. These people, with God’s favor and concern, forged the growth and accomplishments of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish into a living, vibrant community of faith. Let us continue to be like our patron St. Andrew in this way: to lead others to Jesus. By our words and example, we are called to draw people ever closer to Jesus, to prepare for the coming of Jesus again in our world and in people’s hearts. That is what it means to “evangelize,” to spread the joyful Good News that Jesus is here, and He is coming! In Jesus, the One who will come again in glory with St. Andrew and all the saints, Fr. Gregor Simbang Gabi Mass will be celebrated this year at 5:30 pm Saturday evening Mass, December 13, 2014 Simbang Gabi literally means “evening or night mass.” In practice, it refers to the Philippine Catholic tradition of celebrating a “novena”, a series of nine Advent evening masses from Dec. 15 through Dec. 23, leading to Christmas Day. (In the Philippines, the dates are from Dec. 16-24 since Simbang Gabi is held in the early morning.) The Simbang Gabi originated from the Missa Aurea (Golden mass or Angel’s mass) tradition, introduced to the Philippines by the Spanish friars at the start of the Catholic evangelization of the islands. In 1587, Friar Diego Soria petitioned Pope Sixtus V for permission to celebrate these Masses outdoors due to such massive crowds coming to worship. The request was granted through a rescript, and in the 17th century, the Simbang Gabi or Misa de Gallo or Misa de Aguinaldo - as the practice is variously referred to by the Catholic populace in the Philippines became a permanent fixture in the Philippine Catholic religious traditions. Originally (and still observed in most places in the Philippines), the Simbang Gabi Masses were held at the crack of dawn - at 4:00 or 5:00 am, when the roosters crowed to announce the dawn of a new day, hence the name, Misa de Gallo (gallo=rooster), and when families of farmers and fishermen began or ended their day. Farmers began working in their fields early to avoid the intense heat, while the fishermen who spent all night at sea came home early to sell their catch. So, at the first sound of dawn, the local bands started playing traditional carols all over town and church bells pealed to summon everyone for the Simbang Gabi. Families would walk to the church passing by homes with lighted parol or lanterns fashioned out of bamboo and colored paper. In the darkness of the night, we sing with joyful longing for the coming of the Savior, the Light of the world. In the deadly darkness of sin, we hope eagerly for the coming of the Savior, the Life of the world. In Simbang Gabi, we join Mary and Joseph, all other saints, prophets, and the Christian faithful throughout history in joyfully welcoming the Savior who is the Light and the Life of the world. Our helpline 815-886-4165 ext. 304 All calls are confidential with callbacks within 24 hours. Advent symbolizes our human condition. We rejoice in what we have. We yearn for what we think we need. Even nature conspires during Advent time to make us feel our human incompleteness. As the darkness of winter descends, we long for the light. As cold numbs us, we yearn for the warmth. Jesus’ words urge us to “Be watchful! Be alert.” Advent is a time to be hopeful, joyful, and to prepare ourselves for the warmth of God’s love. It is a chance to make the real meaning of Christmas come alive in our hearts, in our families and to reach out to all in need. If you or someone you know, needs assistance please call our helpline 815-886-4165 ext. 304. Our conference brings aid to our neighbors in need. Tuesday, Dec. 2nd 6:00-7:00 PM “Christmas Grace” An Advent journey of music and prayer as we celebrate the birth of our Savior. Presented by St. Andrew Adult English Choir. All three presentations are in the church. Festival of Faith WATCH! “Watch!” This word occurs three times in today’s Gospel passage. Moreover, it is placed at significant points: the beginning, the center, and the end. Though this is technically a parable, it is quite short (four verses). The threefold repetition of “watch” leaves no doubt as to what the story is about. We often think of Advent as a time of waiting, but it truly is a season of watchfulness, a very active form of waiting for the coming Day of the Lord. It is that day, more than Christmas day, that the Christian community faithfully expects, using all of our gifts and talents for this purpose, as Paul reminds us in the Letter to the Corinthians. When we use these gifts in faithful watching and expectation, we become like the servants of the parable, set to their tasks, not waiting around idly, but engaged in the master’s work until his return. May our Advent be a time when we return or rededicate our lives and our communities to this work—the active and diligent faithfulness that the Lord will expect to find. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
