These places are more focused on breakfasts, snacks and quick lunches. They open early in the
morning and close at the end of the afternoon.
These are the places you go in to have breakfast or when you’d like a coffee, a snack or a break
during the day.
Even if these places provide mainly breakfasts, lunches and quick snack they sell alcohol.

COMMENT
You will get a short black. Take away coffee is not very
popular in Italy; if people are in a rush they drink it
standing at the counter.
If you order a coffee you will get a short black. If you
want some milk, you will need to ask for it.

When you ask for a caffè macchiato freddo you ask for
cold milk; when you ask for a caffè macchiato caldo
you ask for hot milk with foam.
Cappuccino and coffees with milk are popular
breakfast drinks, but are not very common later in the
day.
When you order a cappuccino you can ask to have it
with cocoa or without. If you don’t specify the
cappuccino will be without cocoa.
This is another popular breakfast drink. It is bigger
than a cappuccino as it contains more hot milk.

This is the most popular food to have for breakfast. It
is a sweet pastry (croissant), which may be filled with
various jams, with honey, with custard cream, with
chocolate cream, or may be plain.
If it’s no longer breakfast time, you can get a bread roll
(warm bread with different filling) or a sandwich (cold
sliced bread with different fillings).

BARS AND PUBS
These places are more focused on afternoon and evening services, offering aperitivi (from 6.30
pm) and evening entertainment.
Even though they are not specialised in serving breakfasts, you can always get a coffee.
They close late in the evening and they are popular places to get a cocktail, a glass of wine or a
beer. Usually, they offer a variety of quick meals (piadine, toast, sandwiches and sometimes
pizzas) and desserts (gelato, cakes).

The aperitivo is a traditional custom in Italy. During
the aperitivo-time (from 6.30 to 8.30 pm) you will get
free food with your drink (not with soft drinks or
coffees). The quality and the kind of products you can
find greatly vary according to the place. Aperitivo is
very popular (especially in summer) as Italian dinners
start after 8/8.30 pm. Typical drinks are: a glass of
wine, a beer or a pre-dinner cocktail (aperol, martini,
campari). The typical aperitivo food is finger food;
sometimes you get your portion, other times there is
an open buffet. Some aperitivi can replace a dinner
while other can be less abundant
You can use this expression to ask for a beer; the usual
sizes are a small beer or a medium one.
You can use this expression to ask for a glass of wine.
They usually have white and red wine.

This is the conditional form of verb VOLERE (To want – To would like). This verb form is used in
Italian to convey wishes, desires and polite requests. English expresses this same meaning through
the use of the modal verb would (example: if I were on holidays, I would go to the beach).

Approaching Italian Culture through the Movie Vacanze Romane (Roman Holidays)
Roman Holidays is a 1953 romantic comedy directed
and produced by William Wyler. Its stars: Gregory
Peck as a reporter and Audrey Hepburn as a royal
princess out to see Rome on her own. With this movie
Audrey Hepburn won an Academy Award for Best
Actress for her performance.
Ann (Hepburn) is the crown princess of an unspecified country. She is on a widely publicized tour across Europe and
European capitals, including Rome. One night, she is overwhelmed by the strenuous demands of her official duties, for
which her day is tightly scheduled. Her doctor gives her a sedative to calm her down and help her sleep, but she
secretly leaves her country's embassy to experience Rome by herself.
The sedative eventually takes effect and she falls asleep on a bench, where Joe Bradley (Peck), an expatriate American
reporter working for the Rome Daily American, finds her. Not recognizing her, he offers her money so that she can
take a taxi home, but a very woozy "Anya Smith" (as she later calls herself) refuses to cooperate. Joe finally decides,
for safety's sake, to let her spend the night in his apartment, amused by her regal manners.
The next morning, Joe, having already slept through the interview Princess Ann was scheduled to give, hurries off to
the news office, leaving her still asleep.
When his editor, Mr. Hennessy (Hartley Power), asks why he is late, Joe lies to him; he claims to have attended the
press conference for the princess, that had instead been cancelled because the princess had suddenly "fallen ill". Joe
sees a picture of her and recognizes that it is the same young woman who is in his apartment. Joe immediately sees
the opportunity before him and proposes Hennessy an exclusive interview for $5000.
Joe hurries home and, hiding the fact that he is a reporter, he offers to spend the day with Anya, showing her Rome.
He also surreptitiously calls his photographer friend, Irving Radovich (Eddie Albert), to tag along to secretly take
pictures. However, Anya declines Joe's offer and leaves.
Enjoying her freedom, on a whim, Anya gets her hair cut short in a barbershop. Joe follows and "accidentally" meets
her on the Spanish Steps. This time he convinces her to go with him, and they spend the day seeing the sights,
including the "Mouth of Truth", a face carved in marble which is said to bite off the hands of liars. When Joe pulls his
hand out of the mouth, it appears to be missing, causing Anya to scream. He then pops his hand out of his sleeve and
laughs. (Hepburn's shriek was not acting—Peck decided to pull a gag he had once seen Red Skelton do, and did not tell
his co-star beforehand.)
Later, Anya shares with Joe her dream of living a normal life without her crushing responsibilities. That night, at a
dance on a boat, government agents finally track her down and try to escort her away, but a wild melee breaks out
and Joe and Anya escape. Through all this, they gradually fall in love, but Anya realizes that their relationship cannot
continue. She finally bids farewell to Joe and returns to the embassy.
During the day, Hennessy learns that the princess is missing, not ill as claimed. He suspects that Joe knows where she
is, and tries to get him to admit it, but Joe claims to know nothing about it. Joe decides not to write the story. Initially,
Irving plans to publish his photographs, but then reluctantly decides not to do so.
The next day, Princess Ann appears at the postponed news conference, and is alarmed to find Joe and Irving among
the members of the press. Irving takes her picture with the same miniature cigarette lighter/camera he had used the
previous day. He then presents her with the photographs he had taken that day, discreetly tucked in an envelope, as a
memento of her adventure. Joe lets her know, by allusion, that her secret is safe with them. She, in turn, works into
her bland statements a coded message of love and gratitude to Joe. She then departs, leaving Joe to linger for a while,
contemplating what might have been.

cioccolato, alla marmellata e vuote”, dice il cameriere. “Oh, allora vorrei una brioche alla
marmellata”, dice Pierino. “Benissimo!”, risponde il cameriere. “Altro?”
“Si” risponde la mamma. “Vorrei anche un succo alla pera, per favore…”. “E per me una spremuta
d’arancia con lo zucchero!” dice Pierino. “Certo!” dice il cameriere. “Basta così?”. “Si!”, dicono la
mamma e Pierino.
Prima di andare via, la mamma va al bancone e chiede: “Quant’è?”. Il cameriere risponde: “Dodici
euro, per favore.”
Fuori dal bar, Pierino incontra Sara. Ha un vestito blu e un fiocco viola tra i capelli. Pierino la
saluta: “Ciao Sara! Come va? Hai fatto colazione al bar anche tu?”. “Ciao Pierino!”, risponde Sara.
“Si, ho preso una cioccolata con la panna buonissima! E tu?”. “Anch’io ero al bar ma non c’era la
brioche che volevo, uffa!”, risponde Pierino.

Today is Thursday, and Pierino does not have to go to school. When he wakes up, the mum says:
“Today we are on holidays, let’s go to the café for breakfast!”. “Great!” says Pierino.
Pierino and his mum arrive at the café and take a sit. After a while the waiter comes and says:
“Good morning! Are you ready to order?” Mum says: “Yes! I’d like a hot tea.” “Would you like
lemon in it?” asks the waiter. “No, but I’d rather like some cold milk, please! And, I’d also like a
brioche with honey” she answers.
“Sure! And what would you like, Pierino?” asks the waiter. “I’d like a cappuccino with cocoa”,
answers Pierino. “And, I’d also like a brioche with cream.” “Oh, I’m sorry Pierino. We only have the
brioches with chocolate, honey, jam and the plain ones”, says the waiter. “Oh, I’ll have the brioche
with jam instead”, says Pierino. “Of course!”, answers the waiter.
“Would you like something else?” “Yes”, mum answers “I’d like a pear juice, please”. “And a freshly
squeezed orange juice with sugar for me!” says Pierino. “Sure!” says the waiter. “Is that all?”
“Yes!”, Pierino and mum answer.
Before leaving the café, mum goes to the counter and says: “How much is it?”. The waiter answers:
“Twelve euros, please”
Out of the café, Pierino meets Sara. She wears a blue dress and has her hair tied back in a purple
bow. Pierino says hello to her: “Hi Sara! How is it going? Did you go out for breakfast?”. “ Hi
Pierino!”, answers Sara. “Yes, and I had a hot chocolate with cream. It was delicious! And you?”. “ I
was at the café as well, but they didn’t have the brioche I wanted, phew!”
