per minute, with a 50 foot draw down from a static head of
about 180 feet.
We plan to run a 24 hour test Monday January 26th. I will send
you a complete log and results of the test.
I will appreciate any comments you may have to offer about this

The following information discloses the oharacteristioe and log of
a well drilled for the Town of Belcher, Iowa, by the Thorpe Well Company*
The well was finished 12 inches in diameter at 615 feet in depth* The test
pump setting at 840 feet, delivered 75 gallons of water per minute with
a 37 foot draw down from a 200 foot static head* The recovery was 26 feet
in 80 minutes and full 37 feet in one hour* The well was pumped 24 hours
in testing*
There is installed in the well S5B feet 6 inches of 12 inch casing, and
170 feet of 10 inch casing. The 10 inch oasing is perforated through the

Dear Dr.
Hershey*
The enclosed logs of the main well and test well Is the
only bit of information I have obtained to date.
Mr. Tom Thorpe says he does not have a record of the
location of these test wells. The former Engineer, Mr.
Gearhart, has them, and he Is in war service some place.
Tomorrow I am going to Melcher to try to locate a phantom
abandoned mine that is located close to Melcher and was
flooded by a big flow of water at a supposed depth of about
eighty feet.
I may and I may not succeed in getting any information
or definite facts in the above case.
Will do my best and
will see you next week.
Yours very truly,

At Melcher contractors are hav
ing a hard time locating a satis
factory s upply of water for the
water system t hat was authorized
br an overwhelming vote some
months ago.
One hole after another has been
drilled, each striking water, but
none hitting a vein with a flow
anywhere large enough for the
needs of t h e t own.
All the holes drill d so far have
been under 200 feet in depth. Now
it is proposed to go down as f ar
as necessary to get a good fl ow.
When the propect was fir st pro
posed, it was assumed by some
that the flood ing of abandoned
mines near Melcher indicated that
adequate water veins near the sur
face could be found r eadily, but
that proved not to be t he casco
This delay in finding water a lso
delays the whole project. The au
thorities figure that there is no
use laying mains until a good
