This month the Folk Dance and Choral Festival (FDF)
takes up its competition in San Jose, California, preparing to
celebrate thousands of dancers and families as well as Archbishop
Demetrios.
“Keeping our youth connected to their culture and faith
are very important to their future involvement in the Greek
Orthodox Church,” says His Eminence Metropolitan
Gerasimos of San Francisco. “We are blessed that this event
brings together so many Orthodox families and provides them
the opportunity to cultivate lasting friendships.” For complete

This month, Greece’s acclaimed singer Yiannis Ploutarhos
launches his North American tour and the Sacramento-based
Mnimi Foundation joins Opa Productions to present his
California concert. The Mnimi Foundation’s celebrates Greece’s
modern heroes.
The foundation has supported such films as The 11h Day
(Crete1941.com). The documentary chronicles the story of the
men, women, and children of the Cretan civilization resistance
movement and their relentless battle against Nazi occupation forces
from 1941-1945. To learn more about the Mnimi Foundation and

Metropolis of San Francisco has
announced that His Eminence
Archbishop Demetrios will
honor the 34th Annual Folk
Dance and Choral Festival in
San Jose, California with his
presence and attendance at the
events throughout the weekend.
Archbishop Demetrios briefly
attended the 2007 FDF in
Ontario, California and referred to
this event as a “flagship ministry”
for the youth of our Church.
During His Eminence’s visit to
the 2010 FDF, the Archbishop
will interact with nearly 2,000
registered dancers and singers who
will participate in a weekend of
faith, dance and fellowship.
The weekend will begin on
Thursday, January 14 with an

convening of FDF. This will
be followed by the traditional
Opening Ceremonies and
procession of teams in the San Jose
Civic Auditorium.
Dance and Choral groups will
be participating in competition
throughout the weekend on
Friday, Saturday and final
competition on Sunday. Centered
around the theme “Family Takes
Center Stage,” the weekend will
include a series of workshops
offered by Metropolis Clergy and
Youth Workers. FDF participants
enthusiastically participated in the
new workshop structure offered
in 2009, and the plans for 2010
workshops will continue this
successful tradition. “Keeping our
youth connected to their culture
and faith are very important to
their future involvement in the
Greek Orthodox Church. Many
of the thousands of youth who
have participated in FDF over the
past 33 years have remained close
to the Church, and now serve
their parishes as Parish Council
members, Sunday
School teachers,
youth advisors,
and some of
our former
dancers are now
priests in our
Metropolis. We
are blessed that
this event brings
together so many

Samaras new ND leader,

Antonis Samaras is the new
leader of main opposition New
Democracy (ND) party, after
winning an absolute majority
from the first round of the
election.
Samaras, who was culture
minister in the preceding ND
government, is New Democracy’s
seventh president, succeeding
former prime minister Costas
Karamanlis, who announced his
resignation from the party helm
after ND’s crushing defeat in the
October 4 general elections, that
brought the Panhellenic Socialist
Movement (PASOK) to power.
Samaras’ victory was
announced shortly after 4:00
a.m. by election supervisory
committee chairman Dimitris
Sioufas, as the tally of 72.68
percent of the election stations
set up throughout the country,
representing nearly 550,000
voters, showed 50.18 percent
of the vote in favor of Samaras,
against 38.76 percent for former
foreign minister Dora Bakoyannis
and 10.06 percent for the third
candidate, Thessaloniki prefect
Panagiotis Psomiadis.
Samaras’ prevalence with an
absolute majority was irreversible,
while Sioufas said that his
percentage was expected to
increase when all the votes are
tallied.
A total of 1,039 voting stations
were set up throughout the
country, while 64 voting stations
were set up in other European
countries.
Voting began at 7:00 a.m.
and were due to close at 7:00 in
the evening, but a glitch in the
on-line system for several hours,
due to a software problem, and
an unexpectedly large turnout
of voters obliged the supervisory
committee to extend the closing
time to 9:30 p.m.

voting was extended to all
registered party members through
an amendment of the New
Democracy Charter.
In early morning statements
after his victory was clinched,
Samaras said that it was an
honor for him to take on the
responsibility of leading the party
in new struggles for the progress
of the Greek people, and chiefly
for the young generation’s right
to hope, and for the party’s
return to new victories.
“The people have spoken. The
party’s rank-and-file, the voters,
have spoken. Their mandate is
resounding and undisputable,”
Samaras said.
“A month and a half ago, in
difficult times, I spoke to you
of hope, and you received the
message of hope and turned
it into a big, unprecedented,
peaceful and democratic
revolution. I asked you to turn
the streams into a river, and you
created a veritable sea that swept
away everything that was holding
us back, that was taking us back
and hurting us. The participation
in the election process, despite all
the problems that are natural in
such an unprecedented overture
to the grass roots, exceeded all
expectations. A new era begins
now for our democracy, and also
for New Democracy. Today, we
are all winners. There are no
losers. We were not opponents all
this time. I said this during the

be together in all the big battles
ahead.”
The new ND leader pledged
to safeguard the party’s unity,
noting that he did not care
who they voted for and that
everything said up to then has
been forgotten. “We will be all
together. Nothing separates us
now, but we are united by the
major challenges of the future,”
he added.

down on fYRoM ‘name
issue’
Greece will not back down
from its “red line” regarding the
name dispute with the Former
Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
(fYRoM), government spokesman
George Petalotis stressed.
He had been asked whether
Greece would give in to pressures
for the start of EU-fYRoM
accession negotiations.
“I do not know whether there
will be pressures, but the Greek
government will not accept
(pressure) on this very important
issue for us,” he underlined.

Excavations in Ancient
Tegea
The first stage of a fiveyear (2009-2013) excavation
project in Ancient Tegea, near
Tripolis, has been completed
by an international team
of archaeologists led by the
Norwegian Institute in Athens
in Collaboration with the Greek
culture ministry’s 38th Ephoria
for Prehistoric and Classical
Antiquities and 25th Ephoria of
Byzantine Antiquities.
The area of excavation is
a field located to the west of
the theatre and the Basilica of
Thyrsos, where magnetometer
survey 2003-2004 documented
the probable location of a major
north-south street and a stoa
bordering the agora.
The two ongoing field-projects
at Tegea, a survey of a side-valley
to the east of the urban centre
and an excavation in the centre of
the ancient city, started in June,
2009.
Tegea was a settlement in
ancient Greece, and it is also a
municipality in modern Arcadia,
with its seat in the village Stadio.
Ancient Tegea was an important
religious center of ancient Greece,
containing the Temenos (Temple)
of Athena Alea. The temenos was
founded by Aleus. Votive bronzes
at the site from the Geometric
and Archaic periods take the
forms of horses and deer; there
are sealstones and fibulae. In the
Archaic period the nine villages
that underlie Tegea banded
together in a synoecism form one
city. Tegea was listed in Homer’s
Catalogue of Ships as one of the
cities that contributed ships and
men for the Achaean assault on
Troy.
Tegea struggled against Spartan
hegemony in Arcadia and was
finally conquered ca 560 BCE. In
the fourth century Tegea joined
the Arcadian League and struggled
to free itself from Sparta.
The Temple of Athena Alea
burned in 394 BC and was
magnificently rebuilt to designs by
Scopas of Paros, with reliefs of the
Calydonian boar hunt in the main
pediment. The city retained civic
life under the Roman Empire; it
was sacked in 395 by the Goths.

about 10 kilometers southeast of
Tripolis.

Speaking after the meeting,
the minister said “today there are
200,000 children in our country
that, although having their origin
in other countries, were born and
grew up in Greece and speak the
Greek language. These are the
children for whom our country is
also their country.”
Diamantopoulou further said
that “with their representatives,
who are from the junior high
school, the senior high school,
university schools and youth
groups we discussed important
issues concerning the educational
system. The changes in education
now concern the generation of
immigrants as well and start
from the kindergarten, support
classes and accession classes,
the handling of the issue of
the mother language and reach
support for the parents who
must have the possibility of

with the community in the Greek

New Pan-Macedonian Chapters
Marina Velliou Moustakas, Governor of the
Pacific States of the Pan-Macedonian Association,
USA, and Nina Peropoulos, Past Supreme
President of the Association, came to Seattle from
San Jose and Houston respectively to create new
chapters in the Northwest. Marina gave a slide talk
on Macedonia and Northern Greece to interested
people at St. Demetrios Church in Seattle who then
established a Puget Sound chapter. Nina went on
to Portland to plant a Macedonian chapter there.
Vancouver, B.C., also has a chapter with a Canadian
District Governor. John Soudas is the Membership

Promise of Tomorrow, 1940-1960,
highlights the achievements
of their offspring, the next
generation of Greeks. The film
is filled with its own artistic
and historical worth and is
successful on many levels, as a
human document, a reflection
of social changes, a confirmation
of moral strength and traditional
values. Also the film is brilliantly
written, directed and edited.

Konstantinou to California this
month. He will be accompanied
by the incomparable Florina
brass band, Makedonikos Ichos
for their 2010 U.S. tour.
Yannis Konstantinou has
been dancing from childhood
alongside his parents, family and
friends in the village of Florina
located in northwest Greece, and
to this day his personal teaching
and dancing style conveys this
lifelong experience. He has a
deep passion and commitment
to preserving and sharing the
local traditions and culture of
the various ethnic groups living
in the region and has studied the
cross-border influences of
neighboring communities on
dance and music along the
northern border of Greece. Yannis
teaches extensively throughout
Europe and each year organizes
Greek and Balkan seminars in the
villages of the Prespes Lakes.
Makedonikos Ichos is led
by Yiorgos Skopakis (clarinet
- saxophone) with his uncle,
Konstantinos Skopakis
(accordion), cousin, Elias
Skopakis (daoule), and childhood
friend, Athanasiou Dimitrios
(trumpet). Like Yannis, the
musicians learned local tunes as
children from their fathers and
grandfathers, and as adults have
expanded their repertoire to
include the music of the various
ethnic populations that have
relocated to the Florina region. In addition to Florina, the band
plays music from Grevena,
Kozani, Kastoria, Edessa, Aridea,
Goumenissa, and as far east as
Thrace. The band is in great
demand, playing at weddings,
christenings, glendia, and
panegyria (Saint’s day festivals) in
