Visual Story: Nottingham Playhouse This visual story is designed for visitors to our Relaxed Performances. Nottingham Playhouse is situated in the Castle Zone of Nottingham City Centre, just off Derby Road near St Barnabas’ Cathedral. Simply follow our banners on Maid Marian Way and Derby Road. If you want to use satnav the postcode is NG1 5AL. Here is a map. 3 Parking There are parking spaces on the street around the theatre on Wellington Circus. You have to pay at the meter when you park in these spaces, so make sure that you bring some change with you. Make sure you read the information on the parking meter carefully so that you know how much money to pay. There are some disabled parking spaces available outside the theatre on East Circus Street. There are two NCP car parks near the theatre. These car parks are on St James’ Street and Mount Street. If you park in these car parks, we can give you a discount. Bring your parking ticket into the theatre and ask a member of staff to stamp it for you. If you park in these car parks and get your ticket stamped, you will pay no more than £5 for up to 7 hours. 4 Access There is level access to the auditorium on East Circus Street and we have a lift providing access to all levels from the main foyer. There are adapted toilets on floor 2 and floor 3. Spaces for wheelchair users are available in the stalls. You must book these in advance at the Box Office. 5 Here is a picture of Nottingham Playhouse. 6 Inside the theatre. When you walk into the theatre, you will see the Box Office. Here is a picture of the Box Office. In this picture, you can see Gary, Rosemary and Safiya. They are members of the Box Office team. 7 You will need to speak to a member of the Box Office team if you need to collect your tickets. You can also ask them any questions you have. You might see some other people in the building with walkie-talkies. They will all be wearing badges with their names on. These people are members of the Front of House team and they are here to make sure everything runs smoothly. They will help you to find your seat and answer any other questions that you might have. The building can get busy before the show because everyone is waiting to go into the auditorium to sit down. 8 Seating and chill-out area If you want to sit somewhere quiet before, during or after the show then you can sit in the chill-out area. The chill out area will be on the ground floor. Here is a picture of the ground floor. 9 Other seating areas There are also some seats on the second floor. Here is a picture of the seating area on the second floor. 10 Food and drink On the ground floor of the building is the bar, deli and restaurant. It is called Cast. Here is a picture of the bar. The bar serves alcoholic and soft drinks and tea and coffee. 11 You can pre-order your drinks to have in the interval and they will be waiting for you at the bar during the break. Ask one of our friendly bar staff and they will take your order. Next to the bar is the restaurant. Here is a picture of the restaurant. The restaurant serves hot and cold food. 12 Next to the restaurant is the Deli. Here is a picture from inside the deli. The deli serves drinks, snacks and sandwiches. You can bring your own food and drinks into the performance if you like. 13 In the auditorium The auditorium is where the audience sits to watch the play. There are two different levels in the auditorium. The lower level is called the stalls. Here is a picture of the stalls. 14 The upper level is called the circle. Here is a picture of the circle. 15 You will have some time to find your seats and get settled before the show starts. You can take your coats and bags into the auditorium and put them under your seat. You can also take in any electronic devices that you may need. This is a Relaxed Performance so you can get up out of your seat if you need to move around. You can leave the auditorium at any time and come back in when you are ready. After the show When the show has finished you can leave the auditorium when you are ready. 16 Finding your way around When you arrive, you will walk into the main foyer. You will see the lift on your right. The stairs to all floors are also on your right. The main foyer is on floor 3. The next 4 pages tell you what you will find on each floor of the building. 17 Floor 1 If you are using the lift, press 1 for floor 1. If you are using the stairs, walk down two flights of stairs from the main foyer. There is level access into the stalls from this floor. If you have walking difficulties or use a wheelchair, you will need to enter the auditorium from this floor. A member of the Front of House Team will help you to find your seat. The chill-out area is on this floor. There are some toilets on this floor. Wheelchair users and those with walking difficulties need to exit the auditorium on the right hand side to use the adapted toilet on this floor. 18 Floor 2 If you are using the lift, press 2 for floor 2. If you are using the stairs, walk down one flight of stairs from the main foyer. The main access into the stalls is on this floor. You can buy sweets and drinks on this floor. There are no toilets on this floor. 19 Floor 3 If you are using the lift, press 3 for floor 3. The Box Office is on this floor. There are toilets on this floor. There is an adapted toilet on this floor. The bar, restaurant and deli are on this floor. 20 Floor 4 If you are using the lift, press 4 for floor 4. If you are using the stairs, walk up one flight of stairs from the main foyer. There is access into the circle from this floor. There is a seating area on this floor. 21 22 The show On the next 8 pages you can see pictures of the actors that are in the play. You can learn their names and the names of the characters that they play in Jack and the Beanstalk. During the show the actors might ask you to say things out loud together. If you want to join in then you can. If you don’t want to join in then you don’t have to. 23 This is John. John plays Slurp in Jack and the Beanstalk. Slurp is the rent collector. He works for Giant Blunderbore. 24 This is Tim. Tim plays Danny in Jack and the Beanstalk. Danny is one of Jack’s friends. 25 This is Daniel. Daniel plays Giant Blunderbore in Jack and the Beanstalk. Giant Blunderbore lives in a big castle at the top of the Beanstalk. 26 This is Kenneth. Kenneth plays Dame Daisy in Jack and the Beanstalk. Dame Daisy is Jack’s mum. Kenneth is a boy but in the play he pretends to be a girl. 27 This is Anthony. Anthony plays Mrs Blunderbore in Jack and the Beanstalk. Mrs Blunderbore is the Giant’s wife. Anthony is a boy but in the play he pretends to be a girl. 28 This is Hannah. Hannah plays the Enchantress in Jack and the Beanstalk. The Enchantress can do magic. 29 This is Rebecca. Rebecca plays Jack in Jack and the Beanstalk. Jack is a boy who climbs the beanstalk. Rebecca is a girl but in the play, she pretends to be a boy. 30 This is Kelly. Kelly plays Annie in Jack and the Beanstalk. Annie is Jack’s friend. 31 The Story Jack lives in a cottage with his mum. Jack’s mum is called Dame Daisy. Jack and Dame Daisy can’t pay the rent. They are worried that they are going to lose their home. Annie and Danny are Jack’s friends. They want to help him. Slurp asks for rent money from Jack and Dame Daisy to give to Giant Blunderbore. Dame Daisy and Jack have to sell Buttercup the cow for money to pay the rent. On his way to market with Buttercup, Jack meets an Enchantress. The Enchantress gives Jack some magic beans in exchange for Buttercup. Dame Daisy is angry with Jack because he didn’t get any money for Buttercup. Dame Daisy throws the beans outside. A huge beanstalk grows behind the cottage. Jack climbs up the beanstalk. When Jack gets to the 32 top of the beanstalk, he goes inside Giant Blunderbore’s castle. Jack meets Mrs Blunderbore, the Giant’s wife. Mrs Blunderbore tells Jack to hide in the oven. The giant has a magic harp and a golden hen that lays golden eggs. Annie and Danny climb the beanstalk too. Giant Blunderbore finds Jack, Annie and Danny in the castle. They take the magic harp and the golden hen. A long time ago, the giant’s brother stole the magic harp and the golden hen from Jack’s dad. Giant Blunderbore explains that he is not an angry giant. He is a shy giant. Jack invites Giant Blunderbore to come down the beanstalk and meet his friends. Jack asks Annie to marry him. Annie says yes.
