Problem
The Hanjin Subic Shipyard in Subic Freport Zone, Zambales is the biggest shipyard ever built in the Philippines,
and is known to be the fourth largest in the world. To
make the development of the shipyard possible, cutting
of slopes up to 40m-high and filling of some areas are
required especially for the construction of access roads.
During rainy season, erosion of exposed cut slopes occur, which results to damage of property and work stoppage. The Project Owner (Hanjin Heavy Industries Construction Inc.) required to have a permanent solution to
this problem. As a result, their Consultant (E.R. Sibulan
Construction) requested the assistance of Maccaferri
(Philippines), Inc. to come up with a recommendation.
Solution
After site investigation, Maccaferri proposed a cheap
erosion control mat made of 100% coconut fibers, BioMac “C”, combined with hydroseeding and adequate
surface drainage system. BioMac ‘C’ provides necessary
erosion protection for this application considering high
rainfall, exposed slopes, strong water run-off and an
erodible soil condition. BioMac ’C’ acts as ground protection, seed protection and moisture retention for vegetation, soil and root insulation and grass reinforcement,
and it minimized rain penetration. It is cheap, light in
weight, very convenient to handle and easy to install.
