Problem
Holcim Philippines, the country’s leading cement manufacturer, experienced rock fall problems in their cement
plant located in the province of Bulacan. In an incident,
one of their conveyor was hit by falling rocks that resulted to delay in production and very costly repair. The
initial solution was to use shotcrete with rock anchors.
However, due to high cost of materials and installation,
the owners opted to look for an alternative solution.
Solution
The solution proposed by Maccaferri (Philippines), Inc. in
coordination with the Contractor was to use a PVCcoated Rockfall Net as a simple drapery system to prevent rocks from damaging the conveyor. It is a system
where panels of mesh netting are anchored securely on
top of the slope as wells as onto the face of the rock
slope. The drapery system restricts the movement of
detached rocks and simply guide the rocks to fall
downslope without unnecessary damage to the nearby
structure. The Owner approved the proposal because of
its cost effectiveness and easiness to install within the
limited timeframe

They were able to finish 150m-long rock slope in 15
days. Several areas were also considered for protection
after the system has proven to be effective.
