Charles River Watershed Association’s
Annual Run of the Charles: Boston’s Premier Paddling Race
Sunday, April 24, 2016
Welcome and thanks for joining us at the 34th Annual Run of the Charles: Boston’s premier
paddling race!
Through science, research and advocacy, Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA)
and our collaborators have made great strides in restoring the once degraded Charles
River, now heralded the “cleanest urban river in the United States” according to the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency. As CRWA’s signature event, the Run of the Charles has
long provided an opportunity to witness this incredible transformation of the Charles.
This year, CRWA begins our 51st year of protecting and restoring the Charles, and with
your support through the years, the Charles is becoming a resilient ecosystem and cherished
resource. Recreation is now fully integrated within the Charles’ thriving environment, and
the Run of the Charles marks the start of the river recreation season here in New England.
Best of luck to all race participants! To the sponsors, volunteers, spectators, and friends of
the Charles River - thank you for making the 34th Run of the Charles a great success! Come
by the CRWA booth at the finish line picnic to say hello and learn more about our work.
We look forward to meeting you and thanking you in person.
Yours,
Robert L. Zimmerman, Jr.

About Charles River Watershed Association
CRWA, host of the Run of the Charles: Boston’s Premier Paddling Race, is a research and advocacy organization that works to
protect and restore the Charles River and its watershed. Through our programs we develop science-based solutions for water
resource issues that not only restore the Charles, but also help communities adapt to climate change and promote public access
to parks and open space. We use a unique three-pronged approach to
protect the river and our communities, each approach relying on the
others to succeed.
Science: Our data collection and analysis provides us with a solid
foundation to develop practical and successful solutions to restoring the
Charles River.
Law and Advocacy: We promote policies which encourage sustainable
watershed management practices and protect the public parklands along
the Charles River.
Engineering and Design: Our projects address serious water and
sustainability challenges by mimicking nature through the use of rain
gardens, pervious alleys and other green infrastructure.

Square. Photo source: Richard Burck Associates
For 50 years, CRWA has embraced its role as the leading force behind
restoring the Charles River. We’ve pushed boundaries, provided
alternative solutions to standard practices, and begun to reshape the way
we think about and manage water resources.
This year’s accomplishments include:
•
Collecting over 600 water samples along the Charles River and
within the watershed and removing over 85,000 pounds of invasive
water chestnuts from the Charles River in Newton and Waltham by
CRWA staff, citizen scientists and volunteers.
•
Successfully advocating for the full restoration of a 3 acre landfill
at the former Medfield State Hospital site. The Charles River
Gateway, Medfield provides new recreational opportunities while
protecting drinking water and restoring floodplain and wildlife
habitat along the Charles River.
•
Conceptually designing two pilot Community Water and Energy
Resource Centers as a flexible and resilient alternative to traditional
water infrastructure. These centers will not only treat and recycle a
community’s wastewater, but also produce heat and electricity.
•
Designing award-winning demonstration projects and undertaking
visioning initiatives that integrate water management and public
green space into a community as part of CRWA’s Blue Cities
Initiative. We served on the winning design team for the Connect
Kendall Square Competition and assisted in the design of a porous
alley in Boston’s South End.
The Run of the Charles provides paddlers an opportunity to enjoy the
beauty of the Charles on an early spring day. We hope this experience
piques your interest to learn more about the Charles River and the
work CRWA does to protect it. You can help us protect the Charles
River by donating, volunteering or advocating for the river.

17th Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup
Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 9am-12pm
Join CRWA for one of the largest one-day river cleanups in the country!
Over 3,000 volunteers will come together for the 17th Annual Earth
Day Charles River Cleanup. Volunteers will pick up litter and debris
at locations along the length of the Charles River, from Bellingham to
Boston.
For more information, please visit
www.charlesriver.org/charles-river-cleanup
Become a Biological Water Quality Monitor
June - September 2016
Join CRWA in the fourth year of our biological water quality
monitoring program. CRWA staff train volunteers to collect benthic
organisms from small streams throughout the Charles River watershed.
Volunteers collect and identify these organisms to calculate a water
quality rating for the stream. The ratings help CRWA and state agencies
to identify and address sources of pollution and habitat degradation.

Become a Monthly Water Quality Sampling Volunteer
Year-round
Join CRWA’s team of volunteer citizen scientists to gather essential
data about the river. Volunteers collect water samples once per month
at 6 a.m. at various locations along the river. CRWA staff fully train
volunteers and all equipment is provided. The samples collected by our
volunteer monitors provide CRWA and state and federal agencies with
essential data which is used in advocacy, policy and regulatory decisionmaking.

Pull Invasive Weeds from the Charles River
June-August, 2016
Every summer, CRWA mobilizes hundreds of volunteers to help rid
the Charles River of invasive water chestnut plants, which threaten
the river’s ecosystem. Volunteers paddle canoes and hand-pull the
plants from the river’s surface in Newton and Waltham. Groups and
individuals are encouraged to participate.

26-Mile Professional Class Information
After much discussion, race officials have decided to drop the 26-Mile Professional
class from this year’s race. Each year race expenses have risen and the number of
entries in this division has declined so we have had to make this difficult decision
for the overall benefit of the race.
We invite you to join in the 19-mile race where we will start all pro paddlers in the
first heat to give you the opportunity to train and compete with your peers.
Please register now at www.lightboxreg.com or visit

Paddler Feature: Bill Baker
Among the many participants who will spend the day on the water on Sunday, April 24, paddling through seven towns is Run of
the Charles (ROTC) paddler, Bill Baker from Green Harbor, MA. He has at one time or another competed in the Masters, Seniors
and Veteran Olympic K-1, 19-Mile race in Run of the Charles for the past 30 years. He has placed 1st in the Senior and Veteran
divisions and won numerous top ten placings overall.
A long-time fan of the Charles River, Baker has spent countless hours paddling, camping and swimming in the Charles. He used
to belong to the Quinobequin Canoe Club, 100 feet upstream from the start of the 19-mile race and was familiar with the first 5-6
miles of the Charles, which is located not far from where he grew up.
Baker started competing in Run of the Charles in the early
‘80s and learned about the Race from New England Canoe
& Kayak Racing Association racers and other paddlers. [I like
it (Run of the Charles) because it has a little of all the racing
disciplines – a spirit start, jockeying for position and grinding
out the long stretches along with some fast water mid-race.
And portages, they are hard, but I like the challenges they
provide, explained Baker.]
Not only a winner in Run of the Charles, Baker has also won
numerous awards around the world. He has represented the
United States numerous times internationally as a master’s
athlete, winning medals in his age group. Baker said, “Paddling has brought me to Canada, Denmark, Germany, Czeck Republic and to Cuba. I also raced in the World Cup in Cape Town,
South Africa and placed 3rd there, then went on to do the Fish River Marathon in Cradock, South Africa.”
In 2000, Baker competed with David Vandorp in the K-2 at the master’s World International Canoe Federation (ICF)
Championships in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia along with the USCA Nationals in 2001 and 2007. In 2012, Baker and Vandorp also
competed together in the 19.4-Mile Blackburn Challenge in a double surfski, coming in third in the class with a time of 2:48.
“I have really enjoyed training with Bill over the years – he is very keen and we would push the season at both ends until the ice
ended it,” said Vandorp. “Few training partners have joined us for pre ROTC training portages, but he was always game for it.”
Baker picked up ICF kayaking late in life but learned quickly. He was largely self-taught and being a carpenter made him a
strong person, determined and competitive. Friends of Baker’s describe him as friendly and very approachable, someone who is
generous and encouraging. Aside from paddling sprints, Baker stays in shape by running and lifting weights. He participated in the
Taunton Turkey Trot, placing 4th in the 70’s age group.
Good luck this year, Bill!

Real-Time Charles River Water Quality Updates
Visit www.crwa.org/flagging for water quality updates
Each summer you can find real-time water quality forecasts on Charles River Watershed
Association’s (CRWA) website from July 4th through the Head of the Charles weekend in
October. As part of CRWA’s Water Quality Notification, or Flagging, Program, CRWA uses
real-time weather data and mathematical models confirmed by our water sampling results to
predict water quality of the Charles in Newton, Watertown, Cambridge and Boston.
CRWA informs the public of current water quality conditions through our website and
color-coded flags flown by participating boathouses. A blue flag indicates suitable boating
conditions, a yellow flag indicates inconclusive data and a red flag indicates possible health
risks.
Water quality hazards include increased levels of bacteria and cyanobacteria blooms.
Elevated levels of bacteria often follow periods of heavy rainfall which cause polluted runoff
or sewage to enter the river. Cyanobacteria blooms are caused by excess nutrients in the
river combined with hot weather and slow moving water. Exposure to bacteria or high
concentrations of cyanobacteria my cause health problems.
If you choose to boat when red or yellow flags are flown, stay safe by minimizing contact
with the water and washing your hands immediately when you get off the water.
