WHAT IS ESN?
Erasmus Student Network (ESN) is one of the biggest
interdisciplinary student associations in Europe, founded in
1989 for supporting and developing student exchange.
We are present in more than 430 Higher Education
Institutions from 37 countries. The network is constantly developing and expanding. ESN is
operating on three levels: Local, National and International.
ESN works for the creation of a more mobile and flexible education environment by supporting and
developing the student exchange from different levels, and providing an intercultural experience also
to those students who cannot access a period abroad ("internationalisation at home")
The main focus of ESN is placed on current exchange students, who often face problems (and feel
abandoned) in their new environments. Therefore ESN offers help in academic, social and practical
integration process. This is mainly done through activities in the local sections, which include cultural
and social events such as trips to various places within the country, film nights, buddy group,
language projects, international food fests and last, but not least, parties. In addition to that, many
sections have introduced mentor systems, which help the international students mainly in academic
and practical integration.

TRANSPORT
Public transport
The public transport system in Vilnius consists of the trolleybus, bus and express bus network. They
start running at 5 in the morning and stop at midnight.
Useful apps: m.Ticket (for Android) m.Ticket ( for Apple)
Bus timetables: www.stops.lt/vilnius/#vilnius/en
Trip planner:
www.stops.lt/vilnius/#plan//map/en
A single ticket for either bus or trolley use (same ticket works for either bus or trolley) costs
1€ (with ISIC card – 0,5€) and you must buy it from the driver. Paper tickets need to be
stamped when getting on the transport, by putting them into the tiny red machine near the
driver and pulling the rear part towards you to punch the ticket. It is highly
recommended to buy the ticket, because the controls are regular, especially at the
beginning of each month.
An e-ticket is also available (Electronic ticket, “Vilniečio
kortelė“). Firstly, it is necessary to buy a card (~1,16 €).
The card can be used both for single and monthly public
transport tickets. E-ticket must be credited with an appropriate
amount of money and/or the selected public transport tickets.
With a valid ticket in the card, properly activated on board the
public vehicle, if necessary, it is possible to change the public
transport for free and for unlimited number of journeys. A 30-minutes ticket costs 0,64€ (with ISIC
card 0,32€) and a 60-minutes ticket costs 0,93€ (with ISIC card 0,46€). A monthly ticket costs
28,96€ (with ISIC card 5,79€). Available short visit tickets are one-, three- or ten-days. Tickets are
available at the kiosks “Lietuvos spauda”, “Narvesen”, shopping centers “Maxima”, etc.

You are not going to spend whole days at the university campus territory. ESN MRU Vilnius decided
to make a list of places you can go to and spend your free time. Places are numbered in random order
so it is up to you which of them you will decide to put on your “TOP/BOTTOM 5” list. Don’t be
surprised if after clicking on the link bar’s FB page name and bar’s name from the list doesn’t match –
in Lithuania it happens. Discover, Explore, Taste, Evaluate, Recommend.

TIP: if you like service, 5-10% tips are usual in Lithuania.
Clubs/Places to dance
Usually, entrance to the majority of clubs before midnight is for free. But don’t be so excited. Before
going to the club – check the event and its description. Some clubs have strict face control, others –
loose. In Lithuania not all security guys know how to distinguish famous clothing brands, so if you are
wearing “Prada”, but security guys are not letting you in – don’t argue with them.

These are the places where majority of visitors are exchange students or foreigners. This fact does not
make those places better than others, but a lot of you will chose listed clubs as their No. 1 choice to
spend their night. There are even special buses which will pick you up from dormitory, take you to the
club, and then will bring you back to dormitory.
