Dear Brothers and Sisters in Culture:
The India Canada Cultural Association (ICCA) is a registered non-profit society mandated to celebrate and raise
awareness about the power, diversity and color of India’s
rich culture in the Victoria community.
The ICCA is driven by community and volunteers, and it
has a rich history of more than 35 years of contributing to
Victoria through events like the Mela.
A Mela is a gathering or fair that incorporates arts, culture,
music, food, sports and other celebratory elements — it is
a way of life in India. Here, it is an opportunity to share the
richness of Indian culture, create community partnerships
and demonstrate a healthy, respectful way of life.
The ICCA thanks you for participating in and supporting
the 2014 Mela. This is our 5th annual event and we proudly
offer you the best and biggest Mela yet!
Your support and presence is greatly valued by the entire
community — particularly our youth who are the future
leaders.

Al Ahsan dancers started out as a group of friends gathering to share their love of Middle Eastern Dancing.
Studying and performing in Egypt, Turkey and the Pacific
Northwest, they teach and perform a variety of dance
styles from traditional Folk to glamorous cabaret, with all
their beautiful costumes designed and made by one of
their principle dancers.

Apna Virsa — the name itself tells you the meaning of our
culture and roots. We are a group of individuals from Victoria who love Indian cultural dance such as bhangra, giddha, bollywood, haryanvi, rajasthani, and are dedicated to
exhibiting the energy and excitement that comes with it!
Since our humble beginnings in 2009, we have grown
enormously while adhering to our mission of exposing the
community to dance traditions and culture.
We strongly believe in spreading and sharing folk cultural
and dance throughout our community. After all, cultural
dance knows no race, color, or ethnicity — only talent and
passion.
Asmira’s School of Oriental Bellydance

Asmira’s School of Oriental Bellydance was founded in
1987 when Artistic Director Asmira moved to Victoria and
it has grown and thrived ever since.
Asmira Dance Theater is comprised of advanced performing students of the School. These dancers perform at
festivals, weddings, theme parties, theatres and special
events.

BC Cultural Bhangra Academy

With more than 500 students, BC Cultural Bhangra Academy is the biggest South Asian Academy in the Lower
Mainland.
We have won many competitions and have performed at
various diverse events such as the Vancouver 2010 Winter
Olympics, Fusion Festival, and Canada Day. We also
showcase our teams in our own hosted events like
Mother’s Day Dinner and Dance, Christmas Dinner and
Dance and our annual functions.
Along with learning Bhangra, students also learn leadership skills, teamwork and develop great communicational
skills. So students become more confident, and they get
exercise!

Bollywood Hungama Dance Academy provides dance lessons, performances and event management.
We have cultivated a winning Junior and Senior Team for
two years, earning first place at the Surrey Festival of
Dance Competition (2013/14) and gold from Showtime
Promotions Competition 2014.
We take pride in teaching, and our youngest group is 3+
years. We work on personality development with our
young students and provide a stage for each and every
student so that they overcome stage fright and develop

Dance with Meet started in November 2008, mostly as
volunteer work for helping ladies learn dance or as a workout or stress buster.
Since November 2009 Dance with Meet has been providing Bhangra workout classes in the Fit For Women Gym
in Surrey, BC.

Furusato Dancers
The Furusato Dancers perform traditional and contemporary Japanese folk dances called Odori. These are either
national folk dances or regional dances which are performed at festivals and on special occasions throughout
Japan.
The Furusato Dancers is led by their Sensei Tatsumi
Yoshikiyo who received her professional designation from
the Tatsumi ryo dance school in Tokyo in 1970.
The group has performed for a variety of private and public events throughout Vancouver Island since 2006 and
has received several Ethnic dancing awards.
Harmony Belly Dance Company

Directed by Candace Aldridge Sanchez, Harmony Belly
Dance Company offers classes from Level I through to
Level 3, belly dance boot camp and the authentic teachings of American Tribal Styles.
Celebrating her thirteenth year of belly dancing, and tenth
year of instructing, Candace focuses on building and
teaching a solid dance form and foundation, and integrates all styles into her dance: tribal fusion, dramatic fusion, contemporary American tribal style and more.

International Khalsa Gatka Group
Surrey, BC
Gatka is an ancient complete martial art system that has
existed in northern India for thousands of years. Practising
Gatka develops spiritual, mental and physical skills
through the meditation of spiritual verses of Gurbani, a holistic system by which the character and moral attitude of
a student is shaped.
Although Gatka uses the sword as its primary weapon,
many other weapons are used by Gatka masters including
the lathi (quarterstaff), chakra (whirling chain with balls on
the end), Dhal (small shield), Teer Kaman (bow and arrow)
and many others.

mixes Top 40, EDM and Hip-Hop. He has been a favourite at
the India Mela every year for the past three years.
He first made a name for himself in the World music market
fusing hype beats with Indian influences. Now he’s taking his
sound mainstream, releasing high energy mixes.

Kathak Dancer, Neha Munshi
VancouVer
Kathak is an Indian style of classical dance from the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. Katha means story telling, so
Kathak dancers used to tell Indian epics in temples. The
dance evolved as a pure entertainment form in the Royal
Courts and has since evolved more as an expression of
movement and rhythm — although story-telling aspect is
still an important part.
The main characteristics of Kathak are rhythmic movements and patterns, sudden poses, footwork and spins.
A typical Kathak dancer also uses torso, wrists, neck and
eyes to express movements and hand mudras are used
for expression.
Kuch Khaas Dance

Kuch Khaas Dance is a just-for-fun venture started by a
group of teenage girls.
Their love for Bollywood dance, exercise and fun brought
them together to perform and start a new initiative.
The group is primarily organized and choreographed by
Varada and assisted by various members.

Dance Company has been entertaining audiences on Vancouver Island, British Columbia for over 20 years.
The spectacular, high quality, and professional shows feature award winning dancers in authentic traditional costumes delighting their audiences with the sights and
sounds of Polynesia.
Students of all ages and all levels are welcome to learn
the authentic songs and dances of Hawaii, New Zealand,
Samoa, Cook Islands and Tahiti.
Lilia is an accomplished professional dancer, winning
many awards in national and international competitions.

The OĆonnor O´Brien School of Irish Dance (OCOB)
brings the tradition of Irish Dance to modern day by combining a strong sense of tradition and discipline while promoting fun and friendship.
The foundations are instilled by the thorough and careful
teaching of the basic elements, while nurturing each
dancer through the various levels of Irish Dance.
Regardless of level, all lessons are taught in a fun, energetic, and positive environment.
OCOB encourages goal settings and assists each and
every dancer to work to their greatest potential by setting
and achieving their individual goals.

Ocean and Rain Lu are professionally-trained Chinese
Ethnic and Classical dancers, who have many years of
professional training and experience in performing, teaching and choreography. Together they are devoted to promoting Chinese dance arts, and are determined to
introduce the real beauty of Chinese performing arts.
Recently, Ocean Rain have become certified teachers of
Chinese Dance Examination Syllabus (CDES) from Beijing
Dance Academy.
CDES was recognized by the BC Ministry of Education
— who awards CDES students with a total of 12 credits
to meet their fine arts and/or applied skills graduation requirement.

Robina Fashion Show
Victoria, Bc
A perennial favorite at the India Mela, we are lucky to have
them back!
Robina has been part of the Fashion and Beauty world all
her life. She graduated as a stage and photographic
model and makeup artist from the Professional Studios in
Kitchener ON.
She’s held several fashion shows in Kitchener Waterloo
and Toronto, and has a real eye for fashion.
Robina along with models Gurpreet Chahal , Ali, Juzel,
Julia, Madhavi, Ambika and Giselle will put on a European
Style fashion show this year.
The clothes for this year’s fashion show are provided by
Glam and Fame on Government Street.

Shan-e-Punjab

The Shan-e-Punjab Dance, Performing Arts & Heritage
School was started in 1993 — giving youth of all ages the
opportunity to learn culture through dance, song and performing arts.
Shan-e-Punjab has taught hundreds of students — many
have stayed with the school to become teachers or mentors.
The school celebrated its 20th year anniversary in April 2013,
with special presence and speech given by the Lieutenant
Governor of BC the Honourable Judith Guichon.
The group performed in Disneyland in 2012, the first team
to ever perform Bhangra there! Mayor Fortin stated they

Sundher & Friends Fashion Show
VICTorIA, BC
elry designs in India are very intricate; some of the pieces
worn by the models in this show by its beautiful models
(from young children to seniors) are more art rather than
fashion. Co-ordinated by Gurdip Sundher, the longest
serving past President of the ICCA, and choreographed
by a number of youth, this highly energetic fashion show
is one of the highlights of the Mela. India. Bright, vibrantcoloured saris, lenghas, khurtas, salwars, etchkins, and
many other clothing styles, reflect the collage of cultures,
religions and regions of India. Don’t miss this truly, tantalizing fashion show on the Mela stage.
Uminari Taiko
VICTorIA, BC
Uminari Taiko is Vancouver Island’s first Taiko drumming
ensemble.
Its mission is to share and promote the art of Japanese
Taiko drumming through teaching and performance.
Uminari is a Japanese word that can be translated as
“roaring sea” — the sound of the crashing waves and the
silence in between. It is a name that captures equally the
essence of Taiko and of our windy, wave-swept island.
Uminari Taiko is a non-profit, which is supported by the
Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society, the Victoria Foundation,
the National Association of Japanese Canadians, and
members of the Vancouver Island community.

The Bollywood Dance Group is part of the Indian Students
Association (ISA) at the University of Victoria — an association formed in 2005 by a couple of Undergraduate and
Graduate Indian students to celebrate and spread Indian
culture, and unite Indians; both local and international.
We are student-run, volunteer-based and strive to create
a social network amongst the Indian community on campus and give them an opportunity to continue enjoying Indian customs and traditions, here in Canada.
The ISA organizes events to celebrate Indian festivals like
Diwali, Holi, and hosts other events like Sports Meets,
Movie Nights, and group outings.

VFCA Sampaguita Dancers

The VFCA - Victoria Fillipino Community Association's
dance group, Sampaguita, has taken part in various
events over the past 30 years.
Currently there are two groups of performers: the junior
dancers are 3–9 years old and intermediate dancers are
10–18 years old.
Each year we try to highlight different aspects of our multifaceted Philippine culture, such as rural dances, Muslim
suites, Spanish influenced, and mountain/tribal dances.

Vinod K. Bhardwaj & friends

Vinod Bhardwaj is a musician and poet whose performs
under the name Nashad Raza Jaunpuri.
He can play the bansuri, sitar, tabla, harmonium and express himself in the medium of Urdu Shayari.
He was invited to recite at the famous Shankar Shaad
Mushaira in 1995, and the Ghalib Yaadgar Mushaira in
1998 and 1999.
Vinod performed at the World Bank in Washington on the
occasion of Gandhi Jayanti in 1999.
He was inducted into the Edmonton Arts and Culture Hall
of Fame in 2008 and Folkways Alive at the University of
Alberta has archived Vinod’s work.

Yamini’s Bollywood Dhamaka

Since 2010, our group has performed at India Mela, at
fundraising events for Child Haven and Mustard Seed, the
annual Diwali Show organized by Victoria Hindu Temple
and the Arts and Cultural Festival of India.
Our team has a great passion for dance in which we blend
semi classical and modern forms in our bollywood numbers.
Come join us for fun and dance, bollywood style!
Who is the ICCA?
The India Canada Cultural Association of Victoria
(ICCA) is a registered non-profit society that has
been working hard for more than 35 years to build
stronger and more inclusive communities.
Our vision is to promote the social, cultural and educational interests of its members and retain Indian
languages and cultural traditions, with a specific
focus on providing youth with opportunities to develop self-esteem, cultural pride and tolerance.
We have has raised and donated generous amounts of
money to various charities over the years — through
the Red Cross and other major charitable organizations for things like diabetes, cancer research, flood
and earthquake victims, tsunami relief, and many
other humanitarian causes.
The ICCA also works to strengthen its ties within the
community by sponsoring different athletic teams,
having a scholarship fund at the University of Victoria
and hosting cultural events, such as India Mela!
