Be it the commercial aerospace, defence and maritime industries, all areas promise high growth over the next few years.Aerospac industry embraces many advanced technologies and offers abundant opportunities in engineering, electronics, composite materials as well as manufacturing and systems integration. Today, Malaysia has about 200 aerospace-related organisations, with estimated combined earnings of more than RM27.5 billion and some 54,000 employees. Realising this, Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) is tapping into the expertise as well as resources in aerospace industry by developing partnership with the aerospace-related companies to strengthen the local human capital development. At the same time, this can enhance the agency's ability to produce a world-class professional workforce. Its director-general Datuk Ibrahim Ahmad said one of the efforts to be implemented is to participate in companies related to engineering services to improve the capabilities of MARA. "For this purpose, MARA is now in the process of consultation with other industry players, domestically and internationally, inviting equity participation," he said. Through the interest that exists in the knowledge-driven companies later, Ibrahim said MARA is not only able to provide opportunities for students to undergo training and serve in the company, but also enhance the capability of teaching and learning modules in line with the industry requirements and current market conditions. In realising the vision to produce aerospace professionals and experts in the country, MARA will start exposing the students in the secondary level in Maktab Rendah Sains MARA to prepare them all the way up to higher level of education at the University of Kuala Lumpur. MARA's advantages include human capital development expertise, infrastructure in education, research and development (R&D), strategic investment in the existing aerospace and maritime companies, government incentives and financial capacity. Ibrahim said MARA is also enhancing the ability to create the workforce in maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services for the aerospace industry. "These measures are in line with the industry growth through the creation of new airlines in Asia Pacific as well as fleet expansion by existing companies," he said. In meeting the requirements of the industrial market, MARA through its institution Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology (UniKL MIAT) this year, has started developing its second UniKL MIAT campus in Subang, Selangor. Slated for completion in 2015, the new campus is expected to accommodate more than 1,800 students. The UniKL MIAT currently has 1,200 students at its existing campus in Sepang, Selangor. UniKL-MIAT is the first maintenance training organisation approved by the Department of Civil Aviation to offer aircraft maintenance technology programmes . It is responsible in imparting ab-initio training to students in the field of aircraft maintenance engineering, where the university is qualified to offer European Aviation Safety Agency Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Licence training programme in collaboration with the German strategic alliance company. MARA is increasing its investment in human capital development via UniKL MIAT by enhancing cooperation with various parties in order to offer an accredited training, thereby attracting international companies' overseas students to enter a programme. "To enable UniKL MIAT emerge as a one-stop centre of aerospace education in the region, MARA will enhance the ability of this institution by offering other study programmes in aerospace fields such as aeronautical design and aircraft manufacturing," Ibrahim said. The strategic collaboration, undertaken by MARA jointly with local industry players, will enable students to pursue practical training and expose them to the actual business environment, thus facilitating their employment, he added. "In line with the aspiration of making Malaysia a hub for education in the region, we will continue the cooperation with foreign companies in order to expose students to the procedures of international business ethics and to improve the level of training available on a global level," Ibrahim added.
