Welcome to the 2009 Red Rock Film Festival.
The festival previewers have watched hundreds
of films since last December to select the best for
this year’s international competition – over 50 new
films from a dozen countries will be shown over an
extended weekend beginning a day after Veterans’
Day. Anyone who attended last year would have
noticed that most of our competing features were
documentaries - this year, we continue our tradition
of powerful docs as well as commit to show more
narrative features in the competition.
After viewing these films several times, we have
found there are themes for everyone to enjoy
in independent work, and we were pleasantly
surprised by the number of imaginative films that
were submitted from France. Indie film is film from
the soul, and is a voice seldom heard in mainstream
society. Mainstream cinema, however, seems to be
about convenience and what we are familiar with.
The stories in mainstream cinema are conveniently
the same with enough fabricated subplots to prevent
those with imagination to dive beneath the iceberg or
think for themselves. The sound levels in mainstream
cinema are conveniently adjusted so as to not upset
anyone, and sensitive themes are seldom discussed
with respect – instead they are either subdued
or exploited. The mainstream soundtracks are
conveniently heard on any corporate radio station.
Stories are often timely, instead of timeless, and
true science and physics is replaced by movie
conventions, popular opinion or political agendas.
Independent film, however, invites the viewers to
take off their blinders to learn about another culture,
and follow the story beneath the text. Film lovers
should invite everyone - their families, their peers to
take a peek at the independent films such as those
at this year’s festival where anything can happen.
Enjoy,
Matt Marxteyn

Festival Tribute to
Graeme Clifford
Acting panel: Playing a Part in
the Larger Picture
Motion picture director Graeme Clifford will be spotlighted at the festival in a special tribute to his career. A
rare opportunity in Southern Utah, this live interview is the
first filmmaker tribute for the Red Rock Film Festival.
Graeme Clifford made an impressive feature film directorial debut with Frances starring Jessica Lange, and
directed Gleaming the Cube with Christian Slater, Ruby
Cairo, with Andie McDowell, Liam Neeson, and Viggo
Mortenson, and for television he directed The Last Don,
and episodes of Twin Peaks, The Guardian, and Faerie Tale
Theatre. Graeme Clifford was also a leading film editor
for over ten years, and his diverse credits include Images
for Robert Altman, Don’t Look Now for Nicholas Roeg
(nominated for a BAFTA award for editing,) Convoy for
Sam Peckinpah, and the cult classic Rocky Horror Picture
Show.
Actor Greg Kennedy (stage; Vincent, television & screen:
Lucky Origins, Gabriel,) is the commentator in this panel
with Deborah Geffner (stage: A Chorus Line, Pal Joey,
screen: All That Jazz, Star 80, Living Out Loud, Chasing
Destiny, Infestation, Guitar Lessons) Jai Koutrae (television:
Lucky Chance, screen: Dark Island, Point of View, Death’s
Requiem, The Last One,) and other surprise guests. The
panel will discuss the transformation of character no matter how big or small and the differences from stage and
screen. What parts to take, as well as how to be humble
playing a character in a broader picture and how the actor
helps to paint that picture.
With the idea of giving a hand to the indies, we
will look at why actors will do independent theater, a short film or an indie film when a Hollywood feature
seems like every actor’s dream. What is the criteria for actors selecting independent work?, how to work with SAG
actors?, and how to scout for actors for your project?

Director Graeme Clifford acts as commentator in this
panel with directors from the festival Sandy Cioffi, Danny
Daneau and others. In this intimate discussion with Red Rock
independent directors, the spirit of being your own auteur
will be explored. What it is like to direct your first film, finding funding, calling the shots and seeing the realization on
the silver screen. Also discussed will be the studio system
and the completely different role the director has once under Hollywood filmmaking than independent filmmaking.
Sweet Crude director Sandy Cioffi is an award winning Seattle-based film and video artist and is currently a
tenured professor in the Film and Video Communications
Department at Seattle Central Community College. She
has produced and/or directed several films, including the
critically acclaimed Crocodile Tears, Terminal 187 and Just
Us. At only 26 years old, Danny Daneau is an independent
filmmaker who has directed works that have played in over
forty film festivals, including The Attic Door.

Cinematography panel: Creating
Transparent Mood with Light,
Shadow and Movement
Panel Discussion – Hosted by Sol Foods
This special panel of festival cinematographers will include special guest cinematographer Gordon Lonsdale ASC
(Northern Exposure, High School Musical and Bones.) Topics
discussed are how the DP (Director of Photography) plays a
role as part of an ensemble without being overbearing. How
cinematography creates the mood of the piece and remains
a part in the subconscious. Where is lighting placed and how
much? That point where the lighting, movement and camera
angle come together and “Gestalts” and works together, yet
is transparent enough to allow the characters to fill in the
scene. A panel discussion for anyone who always wanted
to know how camera work can paint a picture on the silver
screen, and a slightly different one by changing the color
and light. How shadows can change a mood or even character, and how movement and camera angles can change the
audience’s perspective of the scene and the characters.

Sierra Leone – the atrocities and destruction imposed
on this West African country during an 11-year civil war
contrasts greatly with the rich beauty of the land and
the peaceful nature of its people. A nation that was once
thriving, is torn apart by corruption and the brutalities of
war, but somehow finds hope for the future. This film
offers a rare glimpse into the lives of those who experienced the war, firsthand: an artisan diamond miner raising
his brother’s amputee son, who as a baby lost his leg to
the same bullet that killed his mother; a boy soldier forced
to fight at the age of eight now repairs bicycles in Kono;
Lazarus, a gentle man with forgiveness in his heart shares
his horrific story of the rebels cutting off both his arms,
and to think this happened only a decade ago. The Sierra
Leoneans choose forgiveness over contempt, peace instead of revenge, with hope for the future.

“If the Khmer Rouge told you that rain falls from the earth,

marched into the capital city of Phnom Penh, the unsuspecting people of Cambodia had little idea they would be
forced into a living nightmare that would last nearly four
years. This film shows the courage, survival and eventual
triumph over the Communist regime that was responsible
for the deaths of over 2 million people. The voices of
many Cambodians are heard as they convey their thoughts,
ideas and emotions – the very things they were forced to
abandon in the “killing fields“ of Cambodia.

Bloods, Crips, Guns, Jail... College? The film revolves
around the resurgence of Weequahic High School (WHS)
in Newark, NJ, during the past six years under the guidance of ambitious Principal Ron Stone, through the hard
work of his committed faculty and staff, and from the
generosity of the school’s Alumni Association to make a
difference with the youth and with the gang members of
WHS. Until the 1960’s, WHS enrolled more students who
went on to get PhDs than any other high school in the entire country. After the 1967 riots, academic performance
flagged, gangs flooded the streets, and crime and shootings on campus were common and students and faculty
lived in fear. It was not until 2001 that WHS saw a glimmer
of hope with the arrival of a new principal, Ron Stone, who
vowed to return the school to its former glory.
This film explores the lingering consequences of the
American war in Vietnam, as well as the ongoing challenges of reconciliation. For vets, it can mean reconciling with
the loss of friends, with the painful memories, or with a
government that sent them to fight an unpopular war. The
film also looks at the challenges of reconciliation between
nations, especially in the wake of the unprecedented violence of that war. The wounds of the Vietnam War are still
with us. They continue to affect veterans, their families,
and millions of Vietnamese people who are still plagued by
chemical contamination. Though more than 30 years have
passed, we have not fully reconciled with ourselves or
with our former enemy. This film sheds light on the conditions for making peace and avoiding future ‘Vietnams.’

In the summer of 2008, militants from the Movement
for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) declared
an “oil war” in Nigeria. This was one of the biggest spikes
yet on a radar screen dotted with conflict and tragedy.
This is the Niger Delta – the human and environmental
consequences of oil extraction, the history of non-violent
protest, and the members of a new insurgency who, in
the three years since the filmmakers met them as college
students, became the young men of the Movement for
the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND). A journey of
multi-layered revelation and ever-deepening questions,
the film is about survival, corruption, greed and armed
resistance, and raises broader issues of oil politics, mass
media agendas and the role of independent journalists.

Based on a play, Adopt a Sailor is the story about all the
things we have in common. Philosophy and political affiliation drop away when three people who are very different become human beings to one another. A sailor is inadvertently “adopted” by Patricia and Richard an extremely
narcissistic couple during Fleet Week in New York City.
The young sailor from Turkey Scratch, Arkansas tells how
he fell out of a plane, and listens to the couple’s conversations and arguments without judgment. Throughout
the course of the evening they become human to one
another through proximity as the sailor discovers more
about the couple than what he would expect, their secrets, habits and revealing idiosyncrasies.
Two young siblings Caroline and Darrell, are left behind,
far from any civilization – in the vast and lonely landscape
of the 19th century American West. Each day they dream
of their parent’s return while they struggle to keep up
the family farm. Their parent’s have traveled far into town
to deliver their third child. At the farm, Caroline, a blossoming twelve year old girl, is left in charge of her little
brother Darrell, age nine. Their laborious chores equally
divided, the two siblings struggle to maintain their home
and sanctuary from the brutal harshness of the elements
as well as an unseen terror that disrupts their lives. This
film is a story of love, loss, loneliness, and the truth behind
childhood fears.

How I Got Lost
Mark Foster lives comfortably in San Francisco with his
girlfriend, Erika. Everyone assumes that a marriage proposal is imminent – everyone, that is, but Mark. Fifteen
years ago, Mark’s parents’ seemingly perfect union ended
in a scandalous divorce that affected his ability to commit.
Fearful to disclose the whole story to Erika, Mark chose
instead to gloss over the details, a secret he’s forced to
keep. Mark’s world is turned upside down when his mother, Gretchen, schedules an impromptu visit. Making matters worse, Mark’s abrasive brother, Hal, and his ‘perfect’
housewife, Beth, are joining them for the weekend. Mark is
forced to make a decision; either come clean and confront
his lies, or face a possible future without Erika.
Plays with Woke Up Ugly
During the immediate aftermath of 9/11, Jake and Andrew, drink in their local bar – like everyone else they are
numb and lost, and hoping it’s all a bad dream. The next
day, Jake meets Sarah in Central Park and they fall in love.
A year later, Jake is trying to pick up the pieces. Sarah has
left, and the hangover of the last year still lingers. One day
his friend Andrew comes up with an idea: it’s time to leave
the city. Where to? He doesn’t know. This begins Andrew
and Jakes road trip to a funeral, Kirkland, Ohio, and Little
League baseball where they discover how moments are
rare and fleeting, and how talent is a mystery and a gift.

Charlie is an old gangster, a man of great wisdom and
even greater class. Unfortunately, he’s also quite poor –
he’s spent all his money on women, gambling and the rest
of those things commonly known as “the high life,” and
since he isn’t getting any younger he realizes he needs a
load of money if he’s going to be able to retire. He aims
to get this money by heisting his own boss – the cutthroat mobster Rocco. There is also a catch – he wishes
to deliver the heist with “no guns.” Charlie’s fate leads him
to his son Danny, who desires to be taught all the criminal
wisdom Charlie knows. Soon the father and son are bonding like crazy and decide to pull off a heist of their own to
cement their reunion.

A story of a love that is caught between conflicting
worlds of ideas. The lead protagonist Sachish fleets from
radical positivism to religious mysticism in his quest for
life’s meaning. However, his search ultimately yields nothing but crushing disillusionment. This is because he cannot
square his abstract ideals with the powerful presences of
two women in his life. One of them is Damini, a young
Hindu widow, and the other is Nanibala, the abandoned
mistress of Sachish’s own brother. The music in this film
creates a soundscape to accompany the drama of human
relations, and expresses longings and desires – the film
proposes an unending journey, timeless quest.

At Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni (Salt Lake), where many families work with salt, a 13-year-old boy named Kunturi lives
a traditional Quecha life with his family. His life begins to
change when his grandmother dies, a friend moves away
and his father takes him on his first trip with the llama
caravan. For three months he travels the Ruta de la Sal, exchanging blocks of salt his father and other villagers have
chipped from the lake, for other products of the Andes
and the surrounding area. Kunturi learns from these experiences and encounters along the way. When the caravan
arrives at the town of Macha where the “Tinku” Festival
takes place, Kunturi’s life is changed even more deeply.
There he finds Ulala, the most beautiful girl he could imagine, who shares the same dream with him: to run together
across the immense white sea of the Salar de Uyuni.

What happens to a vegetarian who moves to the last
frontier? Connecting to where you live and eating locally
means not just going to the farmer’s market, but living off
the land and the sea. It’s a serious and humorous quest of
an ex-urban vegetarian who moves to Alaska, marries a
fisherman and hunter and begins to wonder what the ‘right’
thing to eat is… in a place surrounded by wilderness. The
film talks about farmed salmon, toxins getting into wild
foods, and the colonization of the indigenous diet. From
Alaska Native teens talking about their favorite traditional
foods as they make pretzels to women trying to teach
the filmmaker to hunt, this wry look at what’s on your plate
explores ideas about eating healthy sustainable food from
one’s own backyard, either urban or wild, versus industrially
produced food shipped thousands of miles.
