Poultry Activity Card for the Small Animal Auction
The discussion began last year that Poultry project would need
to change the activity sheet that determines eligibility to sell
poultry at the Small Animal Auction at the county fair. The old
sheet contained two groups of activities with exhibitors needing
some from each group. With the state ban on poultry shows and
swaps as well as not having Trivia Night for the small animal
building, all activities were eliminated from one group.
Leaders met before the September meeting to create the new
sheet and it was discussed at the September and October
meetings. The new activity sheet does not have groups but
rather points awarded to activities.
Cavies County Resource Leader
Katie Schroedl, 920-285-4912
In order to sell in the Small Animal Auction, Poultry project
members in 4th-7th grade need 7 points and 8th graders and up
need 9 points. We will still have the sheet to attend 2 county
poultry meetings, which is required by all 4-H and FFA
members to exhibit at the fair.
Goat Project Meetings
Various activities (in addition to the 2 required county project
meetings) are listed on the Poultry Activity Card.

Youth Dairy & Livestock Educator
Dodge County UW-Extension Welcomes Youth
Dairy & Livestock Summer Intern
Hello Dodge County 4-H:
My name is Dustin Winkelman. I am going to be a junior at the
University of Wisconsin- Madison. I am studying Dairy Science and working towards earning a certificate in ag-business
management. I am from Watertown and was a 4-H member in
Jefferson County for 13 years. Currently in Jefferson County I
am serving on the Meat Animal Project Committee as the adult
FFA representative and as an adult leader for the Concord Center Clovers 4-H Club. I have a strong dedication for 4-H and I
am excited to learn more about the Dodge County 4-H program.
My goal this summer as the Youth Dairy and Livestock Summer Agent; is to give back to an organization that has taught me
various skills and to share my experiences with 4-H members
so that they may also learn from them. I am excited for the opportunity to get to work with Dodge County members, adults,
and community leaders. I look forward for meeting you all!

Lamb Weigh-In
Friday, May 6, 6:30pm
Voigt Farm
W6744 County Rd W, Juneau
The Lamb Committee will weigh-in your Dodge County Fair
entries. Families may have up to 5 lambs per project member identified and weighed in. Families must identify project
member names at time of weigh-in, but animal may remain
in the “Family Name.” Members are asked to be present to
assist the weigh in of their project animals. You need to
carry your own entries to scales and back onto truck.
Lambs:
No spring maximum weight for weigh-in.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT co-mingle lambs. ISOLATE
entries upon returning home from other lambs on your premises. This is good bio-security management as well as
YOUR responsibility.

Attention Livestock Project Members Planning on
SELLING AN ANIMAL AT THE FAIR. . .
ATTENTION BEEF & SWINE PROJECTS!
COOL (Country of Origin Labeling) has been rescinded by
Congress and USDA for beef and pork products. Thus as
we enter this project year for the 2016 fair season, NO
COOL forms will need to be collected from the BEEF or
SWINE exhibitors.
However, SHEEP and GOAT COOL forms are still to
be collected as they were not a part of this legislation.
Members of the Goat and Sheep projects as you start preparing
to purchase project animals for the next year, please remember
to fill out the COOL affidavit recording information about the
seller/breeder of your project animal.
This affidavit is an important part of the Country of Origin
Labeling Program (COOL). Please fill out this affidavit as
completely as possible and keep it in your files for two years.
If it is not possible to go back and get the seller’s signature,
please attach the bill of sale to the affidavit. Retention of this
affidavit is imperative to the audit process the USDA can perform on any animal that is USDA inspected.
The affidavit and a fact sheet on the COOL program is
available online at: http://dodge.uwex.edu/files/2010/06/
exhibitorcoolsheet.pdf. Any questions or to request a copy of
the affidavit, please contact the UW-Extension Office 920386-3790.

MAS Project Member Activity Card
(Orange Card)
There has been some confusion regarding the educational
points required by the MAS committee for the education point
card. “4” points are required and can be obtained by attending
educational livestock events. AT LEAST 2 of the points need
to be gotten at a county or state educational event. For some
youth who have no means to have “local club” learning events,
it is always possible to have all 4 or more points obtained from
county or state events.
If an “out of county” event is where a point will be obtained,
use the back of the card to explain the event AND obtain a
signature that can be identified so a call may be given if the
committee has questions.
at the Dodge County Fairgrounds. This is ONE of the r equirements necessary to be in the Meat Animal Sale at fair.
No educational event may give a youth more than 1
educational points (even if other county’s youth obtain 2+
points for such an event).
At least 1 representative from each livestock family is requested to be in attendance! We will be discussing many
important issues concerning this year’s fair.
Youth attending college may obtain a point for agricultural
events attended by speaking with Bonnie and obtaining MAS
committee approval.

Little Britches & Junior Britches
Please refer to page 20-21 of the Dodge County Junior Fairbook. To be clear, the goal of both contests is to encourage
interest in the Dairy project.
Little Britches is open to youth 4K thr ough 4th gr ade who
wish to bring and show a dairy breed calf (May or June
birthdate) on Sunday of fair week. Because it is all about
DAIRY, the Dairy committee requires white/khaki show pants
and NO hats for showing.
Junior Britches is a mor e focused showmanship exper ience
in front of our dairy judge held late Friday morning of the Fair
for youth entering 3rd or 4th grade. The clothing requirements
are also white/khaki pants and no hats. Dairy breed calves already at the Fair will be used. We encourage youth interested
in this contest to call our office ahead of fair week so we can
coordinate use of a dairy calf and experience work with that
calf prior to fair week.
Please note: Little Br itches and J unior Br itches ar e not
contests designed for Beef breeds.

Join the Dodge County 4-H Dairy Judging Team!
What is dairy judging?
Dairy judging is a team competition, based on evaluating the physical confirmation of dairy cows. A class of
4 cows or heifers is placed in order of their physical confirmation of Udder, Dairy Strength, Rear Feet and
Legs, and Frame using the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association (PDCA) Uniform Scorecard. Junior
contestants also complete Type Analysis Questions (TAQs) which ask about particular traits for different
animals. Senior contestants give a set of oral reasons, which defend one’s placing of a class. Classes are
judged in 12 minutes (placing only) or 15 minutes (reasons and TAQ’s).
Dairy judging builds your confidence, teaches you more about functional traits in dairy cattle and helps you
learn more about making decisions. Most importantly though, you build life-long friendships and have fun
with your fellow teammates! No experience is necessary!
Who can compete?
Any youth who is enrolled in the Dodge County 4-H Program.
Juniors: Celebrate 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, or 14th birthday during the competition year
Seniors: Celebrate 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, or 19th birthday during the competition year
What happens at a typical practice?
Each week during the spring, on Thursday nights at 7:00 pm, we have a practice at a local dairy farm
throughout the county. During practice, you can expect to judge 3 classes and complete TAQs as juniors and

2016 WI State Fair Junior Market Barrow/Market Lamb Identification Information
Youth interested in showing Junior Show market barrow or market lambs at the 2016 Wisconsin State Fair will need to
get their animal projects DNA/RFID identified through the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium (WLIC) by the
respective State Fair eligibility deadlines. WLIC is coordinating a statewide DNA/RFID identification program for Wisconsin County and State Fairs. This identification system allows animals which are DNA/RFID identified through the
WLIC County Fair program to meet Wisconsin State Fair Identification requirements as long as the process is completed (all forms returned and samples on file) by the respective Wisconsin State Fair identification deadline postmark.
Wisconsin State Fair DNA/RFID identification deadlines (postmark):
Junior Market Lambs: Monday - May 9, 2016
Junior Market Barrows: Monday - May 9, 2016
How do I get my animals identified?: Request DNA/RFID identification by going to the WLIC website at
www.wiid.org. Click on the text “Learn More" under "DNA Program” (lower left-hand side). Print out, complete and
mail the request form with payment to WLIC. Make sure you return DNA and required paperwork to WLIC by the Wisconsin State Fair identification postmark deadline listed above. Tags and paperwork are ONLY available through
WLIC. Wisconsin State Fair no longer processes DNA/RFID identification requests.
How much will DNA/RFID identification cost?: DNA and RFID tag identification is $10 per animal. If your animal
has an existing 840 RFID ear tag you can purchase a DNA envelope separately for $5.00. Be sure to list the existing
RFID ear tag number on the paperwork and DNA submission.
Will my County DNA/RFID tag qualify for Wisconsin State Fair?: Wisconsin State Fair will accept all DNA/RFID
samples submitted through WLIC by the respective Wisconsin State Fair identification postmark deadline. Samples for
Wisconsin State Fair postmarked after the Wisconsin State Fair identification deadline postmark will NOT be accepted. Please check the WLIC website (www.wiid.org) to verify which counties are participating in the statewide DNA/
RFID identification program.
Do I need to let Wisconsin State Fair know I have my animal DNA/RFID identified?: DNA/RFID identification paperwork does NOT need to be sent to Wisconsin State Fair. Wisconsin State Fair will receive eligible market animal
identification numbers from WLIC after the Wisconsin State Fair DNA/RFID identification postmark deadline. Potential
exhibitors are required to submit their Fair entries prior to the June 1st (online or paper) entry deadlines by entering
directly with Wisconsin State Fair. DNA/RFID identification is NOT your entry to the Fair.
Do I need to have my Open Show Barrows DNA/RFID identified?: Barrows being shown in the Wisconsin State
Fair Open Swine Barrow Show do NOT need to be DNA/RFID identified.

2016 Wisconsin State Fair Performance Lamb Entry Information
Live Show Judging: Tuesday, August 9th at 8 am.
This program emphasizes the exhibitor’s ability to select and raise lambs which will be evaluated on average daily gain, ultrasound carcass merit and visual appraisal.
QUALIFICATIONS
1) Lambs must be entered in the Performance Lamb Division on the Wisconsin State Fair Junior Sheep Entry Form. Entry fee is
$6 per head. Performance lambs are eligible to exhibit in the market lamb division with an additional entry fee and appropriate
entry.
2) Only castrated males (wethers) and female lambs born January 1, 2016 or after are eligible.
3) Lambs must have been weighed and DNA sampled at one of the official Wisconsin State Fair lamb identification sites on May
14th and 21st. See www.wistatefair.com for locations and details. An unlimited number of lambs per exhibitor may be identified
but no more than 2 may be exhibited in the performance division at the Fair. Performance lambs are subject to all rules for drug
residue and unethical practices listed in the Junior Sheep section as well as the “Junior General Rules and Regulations” section
located on www.wistatefair.com.
4) Overall placing will be based on 40% average daily gain, 20% on live visual appraisal and 40% Ultrasound carcass evaluation.
Rate of Gain Component: Lambs will be weighed at the Fair on Monday, August 10, 2015. The Fair weight and beginning
weight recorded at the official Wisconsin State Fair performance identification site (Ma will be used to calculate average daily
gain.
Live Show Component: Lambs will be shown on Tuesday, August 11 th following the breeding show. The specific judging time
will be announced at the Fair. Lambs will show by official Fair weight. The top lambs in the live show will be selected from the
top two placings in each class. Lambs must be slick shorn.
Ultrasound Carcass Component: Lamb carcasses are evaluated via ultrasound to generate a projected ”Boneless Retail Product
Yield” as well as a “Lamb Carcass Index”. Each system uses measures of fat thickness and distribution combined with measures
and evaluations of muscling. In general, a higher score in either or both calculations leads to a carcass that ranks well. However,
there is further consideration given to carcass weight and fatness “desirability” as influenced by industry standards and expectations. “Heavy” carcasses and carcasses lacking “sufficient” finish (carcasses need approximately .15” of fat cover to be considered
“desirably finished”) will be ranked lower due to their deficiencies. Lambs showing characteristics of the callipyge gene will be
heavily discounted. Lambs weighing under 115 lbs will be heavily discounted.
5) Since the carcass measurements will be collected by the use of ultrasound technology the performance lamb division is nonterminal. Please check the Superintendent’s Office to see if a marketing agent interested in purchasing the lambs is secured.

We need 2 or 3 volunteers per shift.
Younger members are encouraged to help
but a parent or leader must sign with
them. Although helping the customer
‘‘fish’’ is a simple job someone must be
able to make change so keep this in mind
when volunteering. Anyone younger than
