Over the last four years, they received rave reviews for their holiday acts during Christmas at the Palace, performed the National Anthem at the Cincinnati Reds game in 2012 and presented their first full scale show in 2014 on the Palace stage. Using only their voices, the group creates a well-blended, captivating sound with no instrumental accompaniment. They collectively select songs that are inspirational andentertaining, and most importantly, that glorify God. Busy with full-time jobs and juggling 9 different schedules often proves to be a challenge for the men, but NINE stays true to their roots and their mission to honor God through music. The group shares, “We believe God gave us our different talents and brought us together, so we try to use our gifts to glorify him.” Please join us on Sunday, March 29th at 3pm as NINE commemorates Passion Week with a plethora of spiritual songs including gospel and pure and simple Gaither-style music. The musical begins in the streets of Brooklyn with Brice as an awkward teen fast-talking her way into show business. The show then takes us through the period of time when she becomes a Broadway star headlining for the glamorous Ziegfeld Follies. While her career soars, she falls in love with charming gambler Nick Arnstein, just as his own lucky streak is running out. Funny Girl is an irresistible backstage drama, a heartbreaking romance and a classic musical comedy filled with unforgettable songs by the team of Jule Styne and Bob Merrill including “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” “The Music That Makes Me Dance,” and the iconic hit “People.” The Palace Production of Funny Girl features a cast of eleven actors led by eighteen-year-old Hannah Fuller. With nearly twelve years of theatre experience under her belt, Fuller received rave reviews this past summer for her comical portrayal of Enid Hoopes in the Palace Production of Legally Blonde and plans to charm audiences once more as Fanny Brice. Joining Fuller in the show will be Palace new-comer Stuart Harris as Fanny’s husband Nick Arnstein, Jay Reid as Tom Keeney, Matt Meade as Eddie Ryan, Morgan Schwartz as Mrs. Brice, Gregory Patterson as Florenz Ziegfeld, Paige Filliator as Mrs. Strakosh, Courtney Hamilton as Mrs. O’Malley, Kevin Orth as Mr. Renaldi, Kris Kasotis as John the Stage Manager and Diana Dailey as Emma. The creative team for Funny Girl, led by director Scott Persinger, includes music director Daniel Bradshaw, Choreographer Matt Meade and Stage Manager April Short. And that’s good news!!! When we started this whole capital project back in the spring of 2013 with the discovery of failing structural steel, we had no way of knowing what the road ahead would hold. It’s been quite a journey but you’ve been right there with us. In the beginning, we learned there were projects we could benefit from tackling that totaled in excess of $3.1 million. That was a daunting number that included a great number of various opportunities to improve this facility. After examining the list, the Board of Directors determined it would be wise to phase the entire project and thus the ReLight the Palace Marquee campaign was born. This project has now been divided into two phases: Phase 1 is further deconstruction, removal of the failing steel, replacement of the steel, and rebuilding with new historic brick and terra cotta; Phase 2 is the repair and relighting of the upright Palace sign and the replacement of the canopy marquee. The remaining needs will be divided into future phases 3 and 4. The price tag on the first two phases was listed as $1.8 million. While no small amount, it was a sum we felt we could bring to you, our faithful friends and supporters. As you know, the State of Ohio, through the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission, has awarded the project March 2015 Applause Newsletter | 3 $731,000. In addition to that, the Fundraising Committee, with the assistance of John Keggan, Emeritus Director and honorary chair, has raised $600,000 through donations from folks like you, loyal friends of the Palace. At the time of writing this column, I am thrilled to announce we have raised enough money to tackle Phase 1 of the project! This includes ordering the upright sign, new canopy marquee, historic brick and terra cotta. And if we can get a break from these frigid temperatures, we’ll soon see the remaining deconstruction and removal of failing steel. Now who ever thought that would be good news? I am again using this column to let you know we continue to need your support with funding this project. To see those signs relit, we still need $500,000. If you have made a pledge or written a check, thank you! If you’ve not yet done so, could you? Won’t it be exciting to see those Palace signs shining during events knowing that you made it happen? A few final thoughts - I have the distinct privilege of sitting in this “director’s chair.” I don’t take this position for granted. I realize what an honor it is to represent the members of the Palace Cultural Arts Association. I understand the responsibility of operating this historic venue and planning for the programming we present here. As we turn the corner and head down the home stretch for the 2014-15 season, I just wanted to take a minute to thank you for allowing me this opportunity and for supporting the Palace in so many ways. We can’t do it without you. Imagine yourself in a warm cottage... ...on a crisp winter evening. Everyone is sitting at the kitchen table as a glistening blanket of snow covers the countryside. The fire is crackling, the kettle boils, and mugs of hot tea are passed around. Someone begins to play a spirited tune on the fiddle, soon joined by an accordion and guitar. The floor is cleared for a lively dance. Songs are sung, jokes and stories drift through the air, and you are lost in the moment. This is the serene feeling one often gets at a LONE RAVEN concert! With over 20 instruments on stage and a program featuring unique music from around the world, the Dublin based band Lone Raven enchants audiences with boundless talent and energy. From peaceful airs to Irish lullabies and invigorating gypsy fiddle tunes, LONE RAVEN creates lasting memories and fills each listener’s heart with joy. In addition to sharing the music of their ancestors, they delight audiences with a collection of award-winning, original compositions that have been featured on radio and television programs across the globe. Father/daughter duo Craig and Kara Markley are joined by a group of talented musicians, including the award-winning guitarist Neil Jacobs, fiddler Elizabeth Blickenstaff, accordionist Mike Dugger and bass player Sid Omasta. Garnering rave reviews throughout the country, theatre management is thrilled to bring a LONE RAVEN concert to the Palace Theatre May Pavilion on Friday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are only $15 and seating will be at tables on the main floor and mezzanine levels creating the ideal place to meet friends for a drink, chat, relax and enjoy the entertainment. Purchase a group of 8 or more tickets in advance and the Palace will reserve a table for you. Make plans now to attend and don’t forget to bring your friends and your dancing shoes! IN THE MAY PAVILION Each season, the Palace Theatre‘s School Matinee Series introduces thousands of school children to the exciting world of the performing arts. By linking the arts with education, historical figures, science experiments and favorite book characters jump to life on the Palace stage and enrich students’ learning experience. As the end of the school year nears, the Palace is pleased to offer two more opportunities to catch a live performance based on popular children’s literature: Fr i , M arc h 2 0 T h ur , A p r 2 3 10am & 1pm | Grade 3-6 10am & 1pm | Grade PreK-2 The Lightning Thief The Teacher from the Black Lagoon These productions are open to the public and admission is only $3.50. Hoffman delves into the life and work of John Eberson and the forgotten stories of the Palace that include a police gambling raid, the construction of the theatre and the stars who performed for dazzled audiences there. A Theatre History of Marion, Ohio includes 176 pages and 85 photographs. The book has 480 citations to The Marion Star, theatre books and other sources and interviews.
