CRUDE HEATER
Discovered in 1987, the Salym group of oil fields comprise a total of 2,141.4 square kilometers and are being
developed under long-term licenses held by Salym Petroleum Development N.V. (SPD). Exploratory drilling
began at West Salym in 2004; production came on-stream in November of 2005; by December, the western
field had produced 100,000 tons.

In September of 2003, OnQuest Canada was awarded a project to provide crude heaters for the West Salym
facility’s central processing facility, which produces sweet oil with water and gas being re-injected. Our design
required two identical units, to heat the crude leaving the inlet separator from a temperature of 30°C to 50°C.

Each of our heater units has a heat duty of 11.6MW. Our design engineering included:
five-pass cylindrical radiant-tube heater with a horizontal convection section

PLC-based burner management systems with output connections to the control room PLC, providing all necessary instrumentations to equip the heater, including cabling, cable trays and junction box
n Five upward-firing natural draft low-NOx burners and their auxiliaries

Given permitting restrictions on transportation, the two units were delivered to the site as prefabricated
modules to the fullest possible extent, including radiant and convection sections complete with tubes and
insulation and a separate exhaust stack with a pneumatic-operated damper and lining, to simplify on-site
installation.
