The unit, located on the third floor of the hospital, will provide patients access to staff who are specially trained to handle seniors in acute psychiatric crisis with specialty training in caring for individuals diagnosed with cognitive disorders. Construction began early this year and is currently on schedule. “We are doing extensive renovations to our third floor,” said David Schulte, facilities manager for SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – Audrain. “Everything is going smoothly and we expect to complete the project on time.” Not only will the unit provide seniors 24-hour monitoring for crisis stabilization of psychiatric symptoms, it will bring additional employment opportunities for the community. The hospital will hire more than 30 positions including a psychiatrist, recreational therapist, social workers, case managers and nursing staff. The hospital will host an open house for the community prior to opening the unit. Its businesses and individuals continually demonstrate a willingness to work for the continued growth of the area. Leadership has many facets and requires a plan of action while striving to achieve a common goal. Leadership Mexico is “Taking Aim at the Future” of Mexico. This will provide an opportunity for personal development and an avenue for participation in the affairs of the community. Applicants will be notified after the deadline of their status. Due to limited seating space, send your application immediately. Participants are selected on a first-‐come, first-‐served basis. WHO PARTICIPATES? PROGRAMS Individuals should have a genuine interest in community leadership and a desire to increase his or her own level of community involvement. Applicants must desire to broaden their scope of knowledge beyond a particular field of expertise and must demonstrate the ability and interest to assume greater leadership responsibility. Applicants for Leadership Mexico are sought from all segments of the community. He or she must have the support and commitment of his/her employer and should possess the personal commitment to attend all of the program sessions. The sessions have been expanded to once a month, half-‐day meetings to offer more information on different components of the community. Leadership Mexico will be held over a sixth month period of time. Classes will be held the second Thursday of each month from March through August 2016. The sessions will begin at 11:30 a.m. with lunch and will conclude at approximately 4:00 p.m. Participants are expected to attend each of the six sessions to complete graduation requirements. Those individuals not able to participate in the 2016 program year will be refunded his/her tuition and placed on a waiting list for the next available class date, if so desired. The Cornell School of Ornithology and the Audubon Society conduct the bird counts every February to determine the numbers and conditions of birds existing both nationally in United States and worldwide. They encourage all citizens to help them complete the census. Scattering Fork has “counted” and “recorded” in the Great Backyard Bird Count for years and invites anyone interested in helping to come out at 9:00 a.m. February 13th and 14th. You don’t need to be an “expert birder” we have those who can help us identify ones we aren’t sure of. It is quite an experience to see every kind from red hailed hawks to little chickadees and this year we have a bald eagle making his home in our area.
