24th July – 2nd August 2015 / Fashion Cultures returns to the
Merchant City Festival with an exciting programme dedicated to the
tools of adornment: perfume, hair, make-up and all things beauty
related. The programme is a celebration of the role that perfume, hair
and make-up play within the culture of Glasgow, the pleasure that
people take in dressing up and going out, as well as the politics of
adornment and enhancement.

Hair Cut Fashion
Leigh Ferguson &
Sophie Macpherson —
Exhibition and Live Event
This project is inspired by the limited menu of
hairstyles found in the hairdressing stalls in
the markets of North Korea, India, Vietnam and
Thailand. No consultation, no negotiation, no
substitutions – just pick the cut, get it done and
go. Hair Cut Fashion, will recreate this experience,
with the hair cut ‘menu’ taken from drawings by
Sophie Macpherson and the cuts undertaken by
Leigh Ferguson.
Hairstylist, Leigh Ferguson works at the
intersection of art and design, through her
vocal, instrumental, and harmonic work as well
as her collaborative ventures with other artists,
musicians and clients. Sophie Macpherson
makes films, live events, objects and drawings.
Her practice often draws on personal records to
investigate subtle communications informing our
notions of identity. This installation revisits The
Cutting Station, which was shown at the Centre
for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow in 2009.

Tennent’s Lager lovelies to the figure of the
airhostess within British Caledonian Airways
promotional material, Fiona Jardine discusses
the development of photographic manipulation
introduced by Mairi MacKenzie, highlighting key
campaigns, which have informed The Persistence
of Type exhibition.
In association with The Persistence of Type, curated by

Clara Ursitti — Intervention
This intervention takes place during The
Beauty Project / Free! / Book your place at
beautyproject.eventbrite.co.uk
Clara Ursitti’s work is often invisible. She
prioritises the non-visual senses, and has been
working with fragrance since the early 1990’s
creating installations and interventions that
delve into the social and psychological aspects
of scent. She plays with what smells good, what
smells bad and odours that don’t fit neatly into
either category; dichotomies that are culturally
informed and subjective.
For Fashion Cultures, Ursitti will choreograph
a fragrant intervention during The Beauty Project
talk and screenings.

Hair may be mere matter growing naturally from
our bodies, yet we believe its shaping can shift our
destinies - let’s face it, a poor haircut can blight
the next six months. Whether curled, dyed, shaved
or straightened, hair remains a potent force and
there are many definitive moments in its history.
Caroline Cox will trace the chronology of hair
fashion throughout the 20th and 21st centuries
placing the featured cuts, colours and techniques
in their cultural context.
Caroline Cox is an international authority
on fashion history and works as a International
Trends Advisor for Sassoon Academy as well
as lecturing and broadcasting throughout the
world. Her books on fashion history have been
published internationally and for her outstanding
contribution to Cultural History, Caroline
was awarded an Visiting Professorship at the
University of Arts, London.
