THINK WALKING A CATWALK IN FOUR-INCH HEELS IS DIFFICULT?
For model Yoanna House, wearing designer clothing in front of fashionistas
and photographers is child's play compared to keeping up with her 18month-old son. Not that she's complaining. She's seen plenty of glamorous
fashions and exotic locales. So, a night of coaxing spoonfuls of puréed
green beans into her son's mouth is both a challenge and a joy.

In 2004, House won cycle two of
America’s Next Top Model, moved to New
York City, signed to IMG Models and
ended up on the runway for fashion
designers such as Petro Zillia, Custo
Barcelona, Sue Wong and John Sakalis.
The Jax native jumped from being a
virtual unknown to working with some
of the biggest names in the industry. Of
course, careers as a fashion model are
notoriously brief, and House was already
in her mid-twenties (practically overthe-hill for fashion); so she transitioned

from posing in front of still cameras to
interviewing in front of TV cameras. She
hosted The Look for Less on Style Network,
a show where contestants have to
re-create runway looks on a set budget;
and Queen Bees on The Teen Nickelodeon
Network, a reality show to help teenage
girls understand how they treat people in
their lives. And she worked as a digital
entertainment correspondent and
spokeswoman for the CW network and
interviewed celebrities and designers
during E!’s fashion week special.
Hands down the most important
assignment in her life debuted a year
and a half ago with the birth of Alastair.
“He is my world and a real boy’s boy,”
she says. “You know, he's doing back
flips and climbing on everything. It’s
been great and the hardest job I’ve ever
done in my life.”
Now 30 and more focused on her
family, the model mom can be more
selective in her career. “I’ve been choosing what I want to do. I’m growing into
myself. In my 20s I just went for the ride,
“I’ve been choosing what
I want to do. I’m growing
into myself. In my 20s I
just went for the ride, but
now I know what I like
and what I want to do and
be as a person and in my
professional life.”
but now I know what I like and what I
want to do and be as a person and in
my professional life.”
Most recently, she's done fashion
reporting in New York and has been
working on the Tyra Show with Tyra
Banks, host of America’s Next Top Model
and a mentor of sorts. “I love interviewing and connecting with
strangers,” she says. “I love being able
to make a connection and sometimes
modeling falls short with that.
“I am continuing to grow my profile
as a TV host. There are a number of
shows in the early stages of development, which I am working on. I am
also working on the development of a
show that focuses on young people
and fashion.”
Though it's been a few years since
her sudden reality TV fame, she is still
recognized in public, particularly by
young women and aspiring models. “I
think because there are a lot of repeats
[of America’s Next Top Model] people do
still recognize me,” she says. “A lot of
girls ask for advice. It's so interesting
how people open up to you. They say
‘you inspired me to lose weight’ or ‘you
inspired me to go to college.’ I guess
people make a connection with the
show, and they want to share with me
how it inspires them.”

AUGUST 2010
Celebrity you were most excited to meet?
I have had the opportunity to meet so many
terrific celebrities. Probably actress Julianne
Moore or model Helena Christensen.
Scariest modeling moment?
Having my hair dyed for a hair campaign
three times in one day.
Favorite restaurants (New York and
Jacksonville)?
In NYC: The Gramercy Tavern; Bond Street;
The Burger Joint in Le Meridian Hotel; Rosa
Mexicana; and Pink Berry Yogurt. In Jax: The
Capital Grille; Salt at the Ritz-Carlton,
Amelia Island; Outback Steakhouse; Thai
Palace in Mandarin.
Fondest Top Model moment (other than
winning)?
Still being in contact with the people I met
during the competion.
Your best feature?
My patience, especially with children.
What don't we know about Tyra?
She is very gregarious and bright. A strong
woman. And she is a total girls' girl.
Best interviewee?
I love interviewing designers about their
inspirations for the collections they showcase at Fashion Week.
Favorite fashion designer?
I love vintage designs, especially Yves Saint
Laurent. Marc Jacobs is fantastic. Chanel in
any era is to-die-for. I also love basics from
J.Crew. 8
