EXECUTIVE’S SECRETARY COLUMN
Sometimes, we need to step back and look at our practices when dealing with young people. Answer the
question—How does it feel to be coached by me? Young people form lifetime goals and objectives from
their dealings with adults. Make certain that we give them the proper perspectives.
I watch football at every level on a regular basis, as I have 10 grandsons playing and a son coaching. It
is disturbing to me to observe how much coaches are influenced by television and NFL techniques during
the course of a game. LET’S REMEMBER—THESE ARE YOUNG PEOPLE THAT ARE PLAYING ON
THESE TEAMS, NOT PROFESSIONALS.

I visited the offices of National College Scouting Association in Chicago and was quite impressed with the
manner in which they fulfill their obligations to their clients. It appears as if they pursue every avenue to aid

Football Officials Needed-Illinois High Schools
Coaches and Athletic Directors are encountering much difficulty in
securing officials for Football Games. Many games are being
moved to alternate dates, thus disrupting the organization of high
school teams. Their is definitely a need for interested parties to
become involved as a high school football official. This a great
way to stay involved in high school sports and work with young
people. Encourage young people interested in football to pursue
this avocation, or at least visit with some veteran official about the
benefits of this involvement. Who knows where it could lead
them!! Contact the IHSA 309-663-6377
ILLINOIS COACHES ASSOCIATION has a brochure outlining
benefits of membership and activities available through membership. Contact the ICA Office and we will send you an ample
amount for your coaches.

College Sports and Athletic Scholarships
In the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), every student-athlete matters and is supported in the ongoing
pursuit of being his or her best.
The NAIA is home to close to 300 colleges and universities with 60,000 student-athletes competing in 23 national championships. Our schools offer more than $450 million in athletic scholarships every year, so we hope you’ll talk to your students
about what they need to do to be able to PlayNAIA.
If your student-athletes are looking for a way to get noticed by college coaches and receive scholarship money to keep
playing at the collegiate level, then PlayNAIA.org is the place to start. At PlayNAIA.org prospective student-athletes can:
Explore the world of NAIA college sports

Glazier Clinics and IHSFCA Deliver Illinois
Football Coaches a Great Avenue for Education
The Glazier Football Clinics and the Illinois High School Football
Coaches Association started a partnership in 2013 that gives Illinois
football coaches a considerable amount of excellent football educa‐
tion. Between the two organizations there will be three great clinics.
They include the two Glazier clinics in Chicago and the IHSFCA clinic
in Champaign. Both organizations share a passion for educating foot‐
ball coaches and providing every opportunity for coaches to succeed
on and off the field.
The Glazier Football Clinics provides 24/7 football education by
offering a Staff Season Pass, which allows an entire coaching staff to
attend the 30+ Glazier clinics nationwide in 2013 for only $349 for
online registrations. These clinics feature talented speakers talking
on a variety of topics. The Season Pass also includes a one‐year
membership to Glazier Clinic Online ‐ access to over 1,000 sets of
clinic notes, over 200 hours of online video and over 250 archived
webinars.
Additionally, the Season Pass includes 10 live eClinics ‐ an internet
video streaming clinic event. Glazier features a streaming video tech‐
nology that provides clear video streams for optimal viewing. Watch
the eClinics from the comfort of your home or office at Glazier Clinic
Online.
Besides the Chicago Glazier clinics, there are other regional Glazier
clinics, which include St. Louis, Indianapolis, Grand Rapids,
Cincinnati, and Detroit. The Chicago Glazier clinics have a premier
speaking lineup, including coaches from the New York Giants,
Stanford, Illinois, Michigan State, Tulsa, Arkansas, Georgia Tech,
Wisconsin and many more.
Together, IHSFCA and Glazier Clinics provide you with the resources
to take your team to the next level. We look forward to seeing you at
the 2013 Glazier clinics and the 2013 IHSFCA clinic.

Good luck the remainder of the 2012 football season!

“Our staff has been together for 5 years here at Glenbard West. We
have been one of the top teams in Illinois each of those years. Glazier
Clinics have been our #1 resource for football knowledge. You can’t
beat the Season Pass; it has allowed our entire staff to attend numerous locations for a very low price. The Glazier Clinics Online is a priceless commodity that has given us an unlimited resource.”

SPORTS ON THE EDGE:
ARE TRUE CHAMPIONS BECOMING EXTINCT?
Athlete, Coach, Author Kirk Mango Shows Athletes the Path to Becoming a True Champion
In a world where athletes are celebrities and fame and fortune comes with high scrutiny and expectations, how
do some manage to escape the bad media attention and be true champions? Why do some make the choices they do
and garner that attention, giving athletes, in general, a bad name? Threetime Hall of Fame athlete Kirk Mango (a for
mer National Champion, Threetime AllAmerican, coach and author) shows athletes the meaning of Becoming a True
Champion, utilizing the principals he learned that took him from a mediocre gymnast to one who defeated several
Olympians and became known as “The Lord of the Rings.”
In a desire to share his own story and wisdom on how to achieve success—both athletically and personally—
Mango authored Becoming a True Champion: Achieving Athletic Excellence from the Inside Out, with Daveda Lamont
(Rowman & Littlefield, $17.95, May 2012). In it he tells the story of how he became a state champion in just one year.
A selfdescribed “mediocre” high school gymnast, Mango reached a turning point, making a lifechanging decision that
put him on the path to success.
Today, Mango focuses not on what it means to be a champion—but instead on how to become one. As a
teacher, coach and mentor to high school students for over 30 years, he says that being successful is a process that
requires hard work, discipline, perseverance, integrity and taking personal responsibility, something often not modeled
in professional athletes. Blaming “everything outside the athlete,” from poor referee calls to weather, shifts respon
sibility away from the athlete, Mango believes; staying true to one’s own individuality and taking responsibility are the
keys to achieving one’s goals.
“So many young people are focused on immediate gratification today. They don’t want to work for it,” says
Mango. “But success takes time, and requires tapping into one’s internal, intrinsic motivations and being unwilling to
give up.”
And while the outcome of this work might be a championship (fame or fortune) it might not, but the building blocks
behind success are established, portable and can apply to all areas of life.
Does that mean it will be easy? “Not at all,” says Mango. “Students, and all athletes, face significant peer pres
sures and influences today, including cheating and other poor ethical choices, entitlementtype attitudes, steroids, and
the like. Adversity can be a good thing, but when students rise above and stay true to their goals, these challenges can
build character and mental discipline crucial for success.”
Becoming a True Champion is for athletes of all abilities and ages, and gives readers insight on how to achieve
their personal best and avoid the pitfalls of temptations and influences that create a shortcut to success, but not long
term success.
The book is available on Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com and through the publisher, Rowman &
Littlefield. For more information about Kirk Mango and his book, visit

ICA NAMES SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
We were quite pleased to have the young people respond to the Scholarship opportunity provided by
the Illinois Coaches Association. We feel as if this shows initiative on their part and also is an indication
of responsibility.
This is the eighteenth year that the ICA has made this scholarship available to a son or daughter of a
member. This year the offerings include five young people. We feel that this $750 one time scholarship
is a substantial benefit of membership.
We would like to announce that Joshua Young, Lemont HS, Kevin Modelski, Conant HS, Thomas Razo,
Lockport HS, Thomas Nye, Chicago Brother Rice HS and Rebekah Michaelsen, Lemont HS have been
named the recipients of the $750 Illinois Coaches Association/ NATIONAL FUNDRAISING PARTNERS
Scholarships for this year. Caitlin Kozelichki, Monmouth United HS has been named as the recipient of
the $500 ICA/Azer Clinic Scholarship. This award is available to the children of ICA members who live
in Knox, Mercer or Warren Counties.

Coaches and athletic directors of Illinois
I couldn’t be prouder that NCSA has the opportunity through the Illinois Coaches Association to assist coaches
by providing recruiting education to their student athletes and parents. Together, we can help ensure every
young athlete in our state who is committed to playing in college has the chance to. Let me give you a little background about us – when NCSA started in 2000, it was me at a desk in my basement. Since then, our staff has
grown to more than 300, and over 60,000 NCSA athletes - 90% of the kids we’ve worked with - have gone on
to play in college, earning a total of $3 billion in scholarships.
We send speakers across the country to talk with student-athletes about how the recruiting process works and
how to use sports to make the most of their future (we call it “athleadership”). Our Recruit-Match system allows
any athlete, coach, or athletic director to access a wealth of recruiting and college information, and connect with
others in the network – players can find their best-fit colleges and future coaches, coaches can fill their rosters
with quality athletes each year.
Like most of our staff, I am a former athlete. Partly because of that, our view of recruiting goes way beyond
Signing Day. College sports are a path to higher education. They teach athletes discipline, time management,
and how to work as part of a team (which may be why 100% of CEOs we surveyed would hire a college athlete over a non-athlete with similar qualifications). Our athletes are with us for life - from recruiting, to transferring, to professional connections once they graduate.
We provide high school coaches, athletic directors, guidance counselors and club coaches with recruiting tools,
resources, and college coach connections through our High School Recruiting Management System. To sign
up for the High School RMS please go to our website: ncsasports.org and click on “High School Coaches” in
the lower right hand corner.
I look forward to working with you on our common goal: to help committed athletes play and prosper.
Best regards,
Chris Krause
