CHWMEG accomplishes this by facilitating a recycling and waste processing facility review program using CHWMEG’s proprietary protocol, by disseminating timely information to its members, and through its periodic meetings. Third-party management of manufacturing and production wastes and other “spent materials” can be your company’s greatest environmental risk. Yet the challenges and costs of due diligence and environmental stewardship continue to expand. Conducting comprehensive reviews of these key suppliers’ facilities and closely monitoring the status of these “previously-approved” service providers are necessary activities, can become an increasing burden on vital and limited resources. CHWMEG, Inc. (CHWMEG) was formed by visionary companies in 1985 to address this very problem. CHWMEG is a nonprofit association of enterprises that are globally focused on the stewardship and risk management associated with spent materials and production wastes. CHWMEG assists member companies in assessing and minimizing their business risk associated with the management of manufacturing related wastes and spent materials. A key advantage of membership in CHWMEG is access to in-depth information concerning thirdparty waste handling/recycling facilities. CHWMEG’s facility review reports are recognized as “best environmental management practice” by environmental managers, risk managers, and corporate legal counsel world-wide. CHWMEG’s reports represent the lowest cost option for obtaining comprehensive and objective information. CHWMEG reports include comparison of facility information against benchmarks and a proprietary Risk Assessment System (RAS). The RAS is designed to quantify information so members can better evaluate facility operations and characterize relative environmental risk by industry-recognized potential exposure pathways (groundwater, surface water, air releases, and fire risk). CHWMEG conveys timely information via its website and through periodic dissemination of news items to the membership. Events concerning these suppliers of recycling and treatment/disposal services are highlighted in these updates. This assists member company representatives in monitoring the status of these facilities and the impact on their company’s activities. In times of dwindling resources, this allows member companies to focus attention on adding value to their productive activities. CHWMEG’s meetings address important and timely topics such as how enterprises manage their waste vendor review and approval programs, events affecting manufacturers’ waste management program requirements, and impacts on the waste management industry or individual facilities and how these impacts may affect manufacturers. Member companies represent industries including consumer goods manufacturers; automobiles; petroleum; chemical; and pharmaceuticals. As well, educational and research institutions and individual government installations are eligible for membership. CHWMEG’s membership represents a cross-section of the leading corporations in the world providing a unique opportunity to pursue “best-in-class” program management and significant cost savings. Reflecting the expansion of the needs of CHWMEG’s members, the CHWMEG facility review program scope has expanded beyond North America to address the U.K. and Europe, Latin America, and the Asia Pacific regions.
