Paddle8 presents Ocular, an auction of works exploring the legacy of Op-Art
Featuring works by Tom Friedman, Victor Vasarely, Tauba Auerbach, Sol LeWitt, Philip
Taaffe, and Yayoi Kusama

Paddle8 is pleased to present Ocular, a sale of work exploring the interaction of illusion and
picture plane popularized in the Op-Art movement of the 60s and 70s and extending into
contemporary works that yield ocular phenomena through color and pattern.
The sale features artists ranging from Op-Art pioneers like Victor Vasarely, Frank Stella, and
Julian Stanczak, to contemporary practitioners including Tauba Auerbach, Takashi
Murakami, Fred Tomaselli, Yayoi Kusama and Phillip Taaffe, whose works play with the
perception of space with the use of repetition, color theory, intricate geometric
arrangements, and other graphic and trompe l’oeil effects. Ocular also includes work by
notable designers, including Gio Ponti and Pantone, who applied the ideas of Op-Art and
illusion to three-dimensional works.
