WHAT’S HAPPENING
30TH ANNUAL PIRATE DAYS: Event features re-enactments, family festivities
ALEXANDRIA BAY — Cannon blasts,
sword fights and family fun mark another
10-day run of the popular Bill Johnston’s
Pirate Days beginning Friday.
The Alexandria Bay Chamber of Commerce and local business community welcome visitors for the festival, which marks
30 years this season.
As the story goes, Bill Johnston, the popular Thousand Islands pirate, returns to
his roots each summer to wreck havoc on
the village. He arrives on his wooden ship
and engages in sword fights with the town
guards in an effort to claim the town as his
own. When he has prevailed, he is granted
access to the town as the mayor presents
him with the key.
At 1:15 p.m. Saturday, the capture of the
pirate scouting party will start at Uncle
Sam Boat Tours. The guard and villagers
will arrest the pirates downtown and escort them to Scenic View Park.
At 2 p.m. Saturday and Aug. 14 there will
be a re-enacted invasion in which pirates,
led by legendary Bill Johnston, arrive in
their tall ship, the Lotus. Cannon and musket fire rock the village as the pirates invade Alexandria Bay in an attempt to take

Antique Raceboat Regatta slated Aug. 13 to 15
CLAYTON — The Antique Raceboat Regatta is scheduled Aug. 13 to 15 at the Antique Boat Museum’s harbor.
Early in the 20th century, the Gold Cup
Challenge was raced at Chippewa Bay, 15
miles downriver from the museum; those
early races were dominated by Dixie II, one
of the museum’s most valued artifacts now
featured in the “Quest for Speed” exhibit in
the Gold Cup Building.
This year’s regatta will celebrate the
10th running of these rare outboards,
classic hydroplanes and antique inboards.
The illustrious raceboats from those
early years will carve high-speed turns on
the flyby course clearly visible from the
grandstands at the museum.
The regatta opens to the public Aug. 13
and the day’s activities highlight raceboat
flybys and practice runs as well as speaker
forums featuring veteran boat drivers, mechanics and owners with personal tales to
share.
One-Design launches, known as the
“number boats,” will be on display at the
docks and the original No. 13 George Boldt
raceboat is on display in the museum lobby.

BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — The Glimmerglass Opera Company’s Young American Artist program will present “They
Heard America Singing,” an evening of
music by Aaron Copland and Charles Ives,
will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Adirondack Museum.
The program, also featuring songs that
influenced the two composers, will include tunes that made up the fabric of
American life at the turn of the 20th century: hymns, folk tunes, opera, and a liberal
sprinkling of ragtime.
The gates will open at 5:30 p.m. for those
who have reserved a box supper or guests
who wish to bring their own picnics. The
price of supper with wine and dessert, as
well as the performance, is $75. The cost of

“See it! Do it! Take it Home!” is the
theme for a North Country Arts Council
celebration of creative arts scheduled
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 14 on Watertown’s Public Square.
In the “See it!” category, musical groups
will be featured throughout the day. Kyndryd, a favorite from last year, is a Celtic
rock band that blends rock and roll with
bagpipes and Irish rhythms.
The Rustic Ryders, from Tupper Lake,
plays a mix of traditional and spiritual music, classical, Latin, jazz, contemporary
folk and rock. The Arrythmias Big Band
performs “swing era” music in the style of
such bands Glen Miller and Duke Ellington.
Classical guitarist Gary Walts, saxophonist and vocal percussionist Christopher Celiz and the reggae stylings of “Dan
Hammond and Friends” will round out the

CLAYTON — The Antique Raceboat Regatta is scheduled Aug. 13 to 15 at the Antique Boat Museum’s harbor.
Early in the 20th century, the Gold Cup
Challenge was raced at Chippewa Bay, 15
miles downriver from the museum; those
early races were dominated by Dixie II, one
of the museum’s most valued artifacts now
featured in the “Quest for Speed” exhibit in

This year’s regatta will celebrate the
10th running of these rare outboards,
classic hydroplanes and antique inboards.
The illustrious raceboats from those
early years will carve high-speed turns on
the flyby course clearly visible from the
grandstands at the museum.
The regatta opens to the public Aug. 13
and the day’s activities highlight raceboat
flybys and practice runs as well as speaker
forums featuring veteran boat drivers, mechanics and owners with personal tales to
share.
One-Design launches, known as the
“number boats,” will be on display at the
docks and the original No. 13 George Boldt
raceboat is on display in the museum lobby.

30TH ANNUAL PIRATE DAYS: Event features re-enactments, family festivities
ALEXANDRIA BAY — Cannon blasts,
sword fights and family fun mark another
10-day run of the popular Bill Johnston’s
Pirate Days beginning Friday.
The Alexandria Bay Chamber of Commerce and local business community welcome visitors for the festival, which marks
30 years this season.
As the story goes, Bill Johnston, the popular Thousand Islands pirate, returns to
his roots each summer to wreck havoc on

guards in an effort to claim the town as his
own. When he has prevailed, he is granted
access to the town as the mayor presents
him with the key.
At 1:15 p.m. Saturday, the capture of the
pirate scouting party will start at Uncle
Sam Boat Tours. The guard and villagers
will arrest the pirates downtown and escort them to Scenic View Park.
At 2 p.m. Saturday and Aug. 14 there will
be a re-enacted invasion in which pirates,
led by legendary Bill Johnston, arrive in
their tall ship, the Lotus. Cannon and musket fire rock the village as the pirates invade Alexandria Bay in an attempt to take
