he Aging Program consists of In Home Services and the Clayton Senior Adult Program. The
Clayton Senior Adult Program has a wide array of classes, special events, and trips for their
program participants.
In Home Services
Information and Assistance is the gateway to community resources in Clayton County. The I&A Specialist is the
first point of contact for potential clients. The Specialist refers callers to services both within and outside of Clayton
County while responding to direct requests from individuals. Our specialists also assess the individual’s long and
short-term needs, identifying resources to meet those needs, providing a referral to identified resources, and, when
appropriate, following up to ensure that the individual’s needs have been met. Referrals include:
DENTAL REFERRALS
Programs that link people who are in need of care
that involves the mouth, teeth, gums, or associated
structures.
MUNICIPALITY REFERRALS
Programs that provide telephone information
regarding services offered through City, County, State,
and Federal offices.
LEGAL REFERRALS
Programs that maintain lists of attorneys and link
people who need legal assistance.
Individuals are given information available through
the Aging Program i.e.: In-Home Services, the Senior
Adult Program, Transportation Services, and Home
Delivered Meals.
DISABILITY REFERRALS
Programs that maintain information about community
resources for the disabled and which link individuals
who are in need of specialized services.

Ms. Annie Grace Simpson inducted
into the Centenarian Club
Ms. Annie Grace Simpson, or Mother Simpson as she is affectionately
known by her Travelers Rest Baptist Church members, was
born July 28, 1915 in Monticello, GA and is the third oldest of
eleven children. Early in life, Mother Simpson attended school
in a two-room building called The Mathlama School for
Colored Children, located in the vicinity of Hadley Blvd in
unincorporated Morrow, where today an African Methodist
Church on Hadley Blvd bears the school’s name. She is very
independent and stays active, ready to go to whenever her
church visits or fellowships with another church. She loves to
travel, flying to visit her only child who lives in California.
On Saturday, July 25th, 2015, her church family and friends
honored her in a birthday celebration fit for a queen, with
letters of congratulations from President Barack Obama and
Governor Nathan Deal. Several county and state leaders also came
out to recognize her, including Senator Gail Davenport and State
Representative Sandra Scott, who presented resolutions from the Senate
and House of Representatives honoring her big day. Clayton County Fire Chief
Landry Merkison presented Mother Simpson with a commemorative hat from the
Clayton County Fire Department and Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill ceremoniously
deputized her. Interim Police Chief Michael Register also presented her with an
American flag from the Clayton County Police Department. On Tuesday, August 4th
2015, the Clayton County Board of Commissioners honored her with a proclamation
during their board meetings.
On behalf of Clayton County Senior Services & Commissioner Sonna Singleton
Gregory, we welcome Ms. Annie Grace Simpson as the third member of the Clayton
County Centenarian Club. The
Centenarian Club is for Clayton
County residents who are 100 years
of age or older and allows free,
lifetime membership to any Clayton
County Senior Services Department
center and all activities. If you know
someone who is 100 years of age
or about to be, contact the Clayton
County Aging Program at 770-6034050 for information on how to join
the club!

Meals on Wheels Advisory Board
The Clayton County Aging Program Advisory Board
(CCAPAB) is a 501 C 3 charitable organization that
was organized in 1984. Our mission is to support
Meals on Wheels programming in Clayton County to
ensure that NO Senior Goes Hungry! Our volunteer board works hard to ensure that every
eligible senior in Clayton County can receive Meals
on Wheels. Here are a few reasons why you should
consider volunteering or partnering with us.
• Donations to our events and organization are 100%
tax deductible. • Meals on Wheels programming is essential to
helping seniors maintain their independence and
saves tax payers thousands of dollars annually. • Our program operates exclusively from grants,
fundraisers and donations. Your generosity and support helps us to feed seniors
all year. Often times, our seniors live very socially
isolated lives and are at risk for hunger and depression
as a result of social isolation. Meals on Wheels
programming is essential for helping seniors to
successfully age in place and the financial support has
a tremendous impact on their lives. A senior can age
successfully in their own home and receive meals on
wheels for a whole year for SAME cost of spending
1 day in the hospital. This alone is a huge savings
to our community and improves the quality of life
for everyone. Come and join our team! Volunteer
opportunities are always available. MOW Board of Directors

The
Mayfest
Experience!
The Kinship Angel Tree is one such service that grandparents
raising grandchildren in need, can request assistance with
Christmas gifts for the children in their care. Each year,
through generous donations from the community and county
employees, children in need can receive toys and clothing.
The Kinship Angel Tree helps 200 – 300 children each year,
depending on the need. There are not adequate words to
describe the feeling one gets from unselfish giving and
helping others, especially children.
If you or your organization would like to sponsor a
child or family this year, please contact the center at
770-473-5788 for information on how you can help. If
you are a grandparent or other relative raising
your kin, there are programs for you and your
family at Kinship Care. There is always room
for one more family. Join us, we’d love
to have you.

Aging Program 2016 Holiday Food Basket Campaign
Clayton County Aging Program will once
again hold its annual Holiday Food Basket campaign during the Thanksgiving and
Christmas holiday season for eligible Clayton County seniors. For the last four years
the Fire and Emergency Department and
Sheriff ’s Office have partnered with the
program to help deliver food baskets in addition to donating turkeys and hens to the
food baskets that are comprised of a complete holiday meal. The department of Parks
and Recreation has also assisted by donating large containers of nonperishable items
to the food basket campaign collected at their community sporting events. In 2015 the Aging program was
happy to welcome Community Action Outreach and Toyota South Atlanta as new food basket partners. With
the added donations provided by the community partners, Aging was able to serve a record number of Clayton
County older adults. Last year the Aging Program provided food baskets to over 230 seniors throughout the
holiday season and the program is looking to increase that number for 2016!
This year the Holiday Food Basket campaign will kick-off on Monday, October 3, 2016, and continue until Friday, December 16, 2016. Nonperishable donations can be dropped off at the Aging Office located at 877 Battle
Creek Road, Jonesboro (behind the library) between the hours of 8:30am to 4:30pm. For additional information
regarding the holiday campaign or Aging services contact the Aging Office directly at 770-603-4050.
During the Christmas season Meals on
Wheels clients receive donated gifts from
"Friends of Meals on Wheels". Clients turn
in their wish list to the Aging program and
program supporters purchase various gifts.
For more information contact the Aging
Program at 770-603-4050.

Older Americans
Month 2016:
“Blaze a Trail”
Older adults are a growing and increasingly vital
part of our country. The contributions they make
to our communities are varied, deeply rooted, and
include influential roles in the nation’s economy,
politics, and the arts. From 69-year-old NASA
Administrator Charles Bolden, Jr. to 84-year-old
actress Rita Moreno to 83-year-old Ruth Bader
Ginsberg, who took her seat as a Supreme Court
Justice at age 60, older adults are blazing trails in
all aspects of American life.
In 1963, we began to acknowledge the
contributions of older people by using the
month of May to celebrate Older Americans
Month (OAM). Led by the Administration for
Community Living, the annual observance
offers the opportunity to learn about, support,
and celebrate our nation’s older citizens. This
year’s theme, “Blaze a Trail,” emphasizes the
ways older adults are reinventing themselves
through new work and new passions, engaging
their communities, and blazing a trail of positive
impact on the lives of people of all ages. preventative health services, recreational
programs and activities through our Senior
Centers, to older adults year-round, we will use
OAM 2016 to focus on how older adults in our
community are leading and inspiring others, how
we can support and learn from them, and how we
might follow their examples to blaze trails of our
own.
This month Senior Services will be hosting the
annual Mayfest event which includes activities
and health vendors providing tips on how to
access programs, resources and opportunities
designed to maximize the independence of older
adults in our community.

“Ms. Dorothy Steel”
Dorothy Steel, a member of the Frank Bailey Senior Center is a living
testimony to the fact that when it comes to your heart’s desire, age is
not a factor. At age 88, Ms. Steel started to fulfil her dream of becoming
an Actor. She started her acting career with the Studio 55 drama
team at Frank Bailey Senior Center. She was featured as one of the
main characters in the annual Senior Services Christmas Drama “It’s
Christmas” where she displayed her acting skills through wit, humor
and the ability to keep the audience engaged. After one of the Christmas
presentations, the drama team was approached by Mr. Greg Allan, a
renowned Actor with an offer of six weeks free training at his local
studio to anyone who was interested in furthering their acting
career. Ms. Steel took advantage of the offer and after the
six weeks her acting career started to blossom. At age 89
she started auditioning and receiving parts in sitcoms,
commercials and television series. She appears frequently
on the TV show “Saints and Sinners.” She is a member
of “Actors Access” and “I Submit Talent.” You can find
an excerpt of her in “Trouble With Going Somewhere
Episode 102” on Youtube. Now at age 90, she is still
auditioning for parts and is being cast in a featured film
which is being filmed in Savannah, Georgia. Ms. Steel
continues to be an inspiration to other seniors and those
following in her footsteps, she is “Changing the Face of Aging”.
