Staff and volunteers are busily
preparing for new exhibits
that will open in September
and October.
Opening September 9th,
“Stillwater’s First Responders”
will look at the history of the
Fire Department, Police
Department, Payne County
Sheriff’s Department,
Ambulance Service and Civil
Defense. OSU Public History
Graduate Student, John
Withers is working on the
exhibit, locating artifacts and
searching out the details that
are most important to the
interpretation of this history.
Withers is currently looking for
anyone who can provide
i nformat i on a bou t t he
cornerstone of the first Fire
Station. He located a photograph of the cornerstone,
Preparation
which was last known to be
utilized as the pedestal for a
bird bath at a home in
Stillwater—unfortunately the
location of that home and its
owners has been lost.
circa 1942-1945. Withers has
located photographs and a
brief article in The A & M
Magazine about the young
women as well as mention of
Junior Co-Ed Firefighters
(high school girls), but little
else is known about them.
Please contact Ammie Bryant
or John Withers at the
Museum office with any
information about the location
of the Fire Station No. 1
cornerstone or the Co-Ed
Volunteer Firefighters.
The Cornerstone of Fire Station
No. 1 serves as the base of this

Withers is also interested in
locating anyone who can
provide information about
Volunteer Co-Ed Firefighters,

This fall, the Sheerar Museum of
Stillwater History is once again
partnering with the Stillwater
Public Library and the OSU
Library to present a community
wide reading event.
The “One Book, One
Community” project is designed
to foster a sense of community
through the shared reading
experience of Angie Debo’s
Prairie City. This event will also
broaden and deepen an appreciation for author Angie Debo,
and honor her remarkable contributions to Oklahoma History.
To compliment the event, the
Sheerar Museum will open an
exhibit, researched by Adelia
Hanson, focusing on the life of
Angie Debo and her
contributions and relationship
to the Native American Tribes
of Oklahoma.
See the insert for the full
schedule and details.

4th Season of the Cool Classics Summer
Concer t Series
The 4th season of the Cool
Classics Chamber Music series is
in full swing at the Sheerar
Center Auditorium this July.
Performances are one hour, with
no intermission.
A reception
sponsored by the Stillwater
Museum Association follows.
Admission is free.
The first performance, on July
9th, included an all-Mozart
program from The New
Cimarron Chamber Orchestra,
with pianist Heather Lanners
and oboist Cassie Hatch
accompanying. On July 16th,
the Cimarron Chamber Players
performed Mozart and
Brahms.
There are two performances
left in the series. July 23rd,
the New Cimarron Chamber
Orchestra will present an
all-Baroque program. Then on
July 30th, Trio Aleszky, with
guest violist Jeff Cowan, will
perform Faure and Brahms
during the final program.
Mahlon Halleck coordinates
and directs the series, which is
co-sponsored by the St. Cecilia
Music Club and the Stillwater
Museum Association.
Additional support is provided
in part by the Stillwater Arts
and Humanities Council.

“1930s Royal Nepal: Photography
by Richard Gordon Matzene”
Focusing on 1930s Nepalese
royalty, this photographic
exhibit provides a rare
glimpse into a mysterious
time and place, but the
photographer, Richard
Gordon Matzene, was just as
fascinating as the subjects of
his photographs.
Matzene has been cited as a
pioneer of 1920s glamour in
photography. With studios
in Chicago, Los Angeles,
New York, China, and India, Matzene traveled the world,
specializing in photography of Hollywood and Broadway
stars and the aristocracy.
During his travels, Matzene collected Asian antiquities and

Traditionally, during the month
of August, the Sheerar Museum
of Stillwater History has closed
for exhibit preparation and small
construction and repair projects.
Once again, the Sheerar Museum
will close in August to allow staff
to address major projects that
would impede public access of
the facility.
art. Sometime in the late 1920s,
he was invited by an Oklahoma
oil baron to Ponca City, Oklahoma where Matzene settled. He
gave
substantial collections of
Asian art to the University of
Oklahoma
forming the core
of the Fred Jones Museum of Art
as well as the Ponca City Library,
where they remain on display.
The photographs exhibited at the
Sheerar Center were found
unidentified in the Ponca City
collection.
OSU Art History
Professor Marcela Sirhandi was
asked to help identify the
photographs.

Projects include exhibit
preparation and re-organization
and changes to the Auditorium
level storage and reception
areas. Also on the agenda is the
painting and repair of interior
water-damaged areas. This
spring the Museum received a
new roof and staff also hope to
schedule repairs of the areas
Due to measures taken to protect
Nepal from British colonization,
Matzene was only the 27th outsider
ever allowed into Nepal, making
photographs of the Nepalese elite
exceptionally rare.
The exhibit opened June 24th with a
program by Sirhandi and will close
August 29th. This exhibit and program
is funded in part by a grant from the
Oklahoma
Humanities Council
(OHC) and the National Endowment
for the
Humanities (NEH). Any
views, findings, conclusions or
recommendations expressed in this
program do not necessarily represent

Auditorium and Lobby.
The Museum will re-open Tuesday,
August 24th, in time to allow
returning OSU students and faculty
a chance to see “1930s Royal
Nepal” before it ends August 29th.

$7,000 as a result of ticket sales,
contributions, and the silent auction.

The Heritage Garden to the
west of the Sheerar Cultural and
Heritage Center has been an
oasis of color and beauty just
blocks from downtown for over
a decade.
Created and
maintained by the Late

Garden received recognition
from the White House as a
Millenium Green Project in
2000 and is a favorite spot for
photographers and picnickers.

The Sheerar Museum of Stillwater History
wrapped its annual spring education program,
“Stillwater Where Oklahoma Began”, the first
week of May. Volunteers, like the Golden K
Kiwanis, help make the award winning
program possible. Approximately 400 area
students participated in the program including
students from Stillwater, Glencoe, Billings,
Morrison, Cushing, and Drumright. These
spend an hour and half at the Museum learning
about what Pioneer life was like at the end of
the nineteenth century.
Thanks to Boy Scout, Mason Strom, the
Museum was finally able to move forward with
plans to expand the education program.

Strom, a Stillwater High School Junior working
on his Eagle Scout project, planned,
coordinated, and implemented the History Day
Camp offered for the first time ever at the
Museum this past June 29th and 30th.
Mason Strom’s grandmother, Earline
Strom of Red Earth Pottery, instructs
the Day Campers on how to make
their own clay marbles.

The Museum enrolled 10 students for the first
ever Day Camp during which campers had the
chance to dig into the lives of Pioneers
through the creation of nineteenth century
games and toys.
With the help of more than 20 volunteers,
Strom successfully the camp, providing a
template for staff to plan and carry out future
summer History Day Camps.

We rely upon Associates’
support to continue the
Museum’s mission of
collecting, preserving and
interpreting Stillwater’s
history.
At the time of printing of
this newsletter, Associates
have donated $19,088 in
Associates dues. This
makes
the
2010
Associates Drive the most
successful of the past ten
years, if not longer! Our
goal at the beginning of
2010 was to raise $16,000
in donations from Museum Associates and with
your outstanding support,
that goal has been shattered. In these economic
times, to see this level of
giving is very encouraging
and we thank each of the
donors who helped make
this possible.
Thank you!
