Call Ammie to your reunion event at the Sheerar! Responders On the evening of September 25, 2010, the Sheerar Museum of Stillwater History opened the exhibit “Stillwater’s First Responders”. The exhibit displays the history of the Stillwater Fire Department, Stillwater Police Department, Ambulance Service, and Civil Defense. Approximately 100 people attended the opening reception. During the reception several attendees helped identify two of the mystery Co-ed Fire Fighters from publicity photos taken in 1942. Th e pr evi o usly unidentified women are Jean Love Pope and Ruth Ann Hoke, both members of Pi Beta Phi. Retired Fire Chief, Bill Maddux (served 1963-1971) revealed that the speaking trumpet, or bugle, is a traditional symbol of leadership in the Fire Service. In the early days of North American fire departments, officers gave orders through a megaphone-like device commonly called a “bugle” or “speaking trumpet.” 2 2 Speaking Trumpet, or Bugle. 2010 Associates 3 Become an Associate 4 At the top, standing on the ladder, is Ruth Ann Hoke and below her is Jean Love Pope. Upon Pence’s death the speaking trumpet was passed to his successor Chief Everett Hudiburg who later gave it to Chief William Maddux. The speaking trumpet has been in the Stillwater Fire Chief’s office ever since. Stillwater Reads Angie Debo’s Prairie City Be sure to see the enclosed program schedule! Officers became identified with these objects, so a small pin in the This exhibit will remain on view through the end of 2011. Museum staff and volunteers hope that this exhibit will continue to serve as a catalyst for the discovery of additional information and objects to better preserve the history of Stillwater’s First Responders.
