The inflight M arch 2012 destination Sri Lanka: Calling Colombo entertainment guide Wide range of in-flight entertainment magazine of Oman Air Y ou r C op y T o K e e p Marhaba Such is the wealth of opportunities for discovery in Oman that few visitors will have been able to experience everything the Sultanate has to offer. From the precipitous inlets of Mussandam to the Frankincense groves of Dhofar; from the two thousandmile pristine coastline to the sands of Oman’s deserts; for many, there is just too much to see and do in one visit. But 20 journalists from across Europe were recently fortunate enough to receive just such an intensive introduction to Oman. They came to the country to take part in the First Annual Oman Air International Media Treasure Hunt and for six days they followed clues which took them to every corner of the Sultanate. Oman’s beauty and diversity clearly left a deep impression which is likely to be reflected in articles in Europe’s media over coming weeks, as well as a personal set of memories to each individual journalist. Oman Air’s energetic promotion of the Sultanate has seen us again sponsor Oman Sail and the Extreme Sailing Series. The Series has transformed sailing into a spectator sport and in just two years Oman Sail has risen to the highest levels of the competition. We are proud to be official sponsors and we look forward to a thrilling series of waterborne contests. A very different kind of event at which Oman Air will have a major presence is one of the world’s leading travel shows, ITB Berlin. Here, Oman’s unique attractions, Oman Air’s award-winning products and services and our network of more than 41 exciting destinations will each come under the spotlight. ITB is open to the general public on the 10th and 11th of March, and if you are able to come along to Berlin, we would be delighted to meet you. In the meantime, thank you for flying with Oman Air and we look forward to welcoming you aboard again very soon. Fortunately, in 1976 His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said issued directives for the reintroduction of the Oryx, and in March 1980 a herd of Oryx arrived in the Sultanate from Phoenix Zoo in the USA. The reintroduction was a success and by 1996 the wild population numbered over 450, all but 19 of which were born in the desert. In 1994 the area was declared the Arabian Oryx Sanctuary, Oman’s first protected area, and later that year UNESCO listed the sanctuary on its World Natural and Cultural Heritage Register. Next time you fly Oman Air to one of these destinations, take the time to visit these fun and education venues. This month we focus on wildlife sanctuaries Tiger Reserve, Kerala For thrilling encounters with one of Nature’s coolest cats, visit the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve at Anappadi in Kerala’s Palakkad district. The reserve lies in the Sungam range of hills between the Anaimalai Hills and Nelliampathy Hills. It is the 38th tiger reserve in India and the second in Kerala. The reserve contains around 20 tigers besides being an abode for 51 species of reptiles, 204 species of birds, 160 varieties of butterflies and other species. Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park Sagarmatha National Park covers 1148 square kilometers in the Khumbu region of Nepal. The park includes the highest peak in the world, Sagarmatha (Everest 8848m) and several other well known peaks such as Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Pumori, Ama Dablam, Thamerku, Kwangde, Kangtaiga and Gyachyung Kang. Wildlife includes the Himalayan tahr, goral, serow, musk deer and Himalayan black bear. Other mammals are weasels, martens, Himalayan mouse hare, jackals and langur. The park also provides a habit for at least 118 species of birds. Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve This protected marine wildlife reserve off the coast of Tanzania, is only 20km north of Dar es Salaam, making it ideal for a day trip. It contains four islands, Bongoyo, Mbudya, Pangavini and Fungu Yasini, providing protection for important tropical ecosystems; coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds. Local charters organise diving and snorkeling trips, bringing you face-to-face with the Indian Ocean’s rich aquatic biodiversity Lok Kawi Park, Kota Kinabalu A 30-minute drive from Kota Kinabalu, Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, also sometimes called Lok Kawi Zoo, is a 70-hectare park that showcases endangered animals such as Borneo Pigmy Elephants and Sumatran Rhinos. The Park features a primate zone containing orang utang and Proboscis monkeys. A very impressive aviary is home to a variety of local and exotic birds as well as some small animals. The aviary is a large, untouched area of jungle, enclosed inside a giant netted dome. A small river runs through the middle, recreating a very real piece of Borneo jungle. 14 International Destination Calling Colombo There’s a very good reason to visit this tiny, Ireland-sized island. There are 40 public holidays every year, and that means the locals really know how to kick back, let their hair down and enjoy life (Image sources: www.srilanka.travel, Photolibrary) International Destination Yes, Sri Lanka, and by definition Colombo, is a blend of old and new. Yes, it is a melting pot of cultures with influences from Africa, India, Europe and the Middle East. Of course it blends all the charm of a bygone era with the hustle and bustle of a modern city. And then there are all the holidays. Chances are your holiday there will coincides with one of these dates, so how best to make the most 15 of your time there? The largest city and port in Sri Lanka, Colombo really does offer the discerning traveller a range of activities, from whale-watching and diving excursions to ancient temples, old bazaars and fine dining. 16 International Destination Head for heights If you are full of beans at the start of your holiday, then start off with a visit to the 650m tall rock citadel of Sigirya, one of the wonders of the world. It involves a steep climb up a rickety staircase and 2440 steps hammered into the sheer rock face – not for the fainthearted. At the top you encounter two giant feet – the remains of the lion statue that once stood there. If you don’t fancy the climb, enjoy the view from a hot-air balloon. Stay at the Sigirya Hotel for the best view of the rock from the ground. Time out You will be tired after that, so head for the beautiful beaches at Negombo. Club Dolphin, Negombo, is only about 20 minutes from the airport and is a good place to stay on your first or last night. Even better beaches are down south at Bentota, where there are whalewatching excursions, and Hikkaduwa, which is good for diving. Mount Lavinia is a beach just 12 km from Colombo. It was famous even during the colonial times. The Governor’s House built in 1805 by Sir Thomas Maitland now forms part of the famous Mount Lavinia Hotel. 18 International Destination Shop till you drop OK, so the batteries are fully recharged and you are raring to go exploring again, Next up should be visit to The Fort, originally a fort during the Portuguese and Dutch colonial period, but now a major commercial centre. From here, you are ideally located to pay a visit to Pettah, Colombo’s leading bazaar district. It has narrow cobbled streets lined with shops and street stalls that offer fantastic bargains. Each criss-crossed lane of Pettah leads back to the main street and each has developed its own vibe. Another good shopping area for bargain hunters is historic Galle, where you can try local restaurants, visit Galle Fort, and shop for jewellery, clothes and furnishings. Stay at the Amangalla Hotel right next to the Fort, Dutch Church and Museum. Or spoil yourself by booking in at the boutique Hotel Aditiya out of town. 20 International Destination Historical insight For some insight into the country’s past, have a look at the National Museum, the custodian of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage. Among its exhibits are a vast collection of half a million books, more than 4 000 archaic palm leaf manuscripts, rock sculptures from the ancient cities, bronze brassware and royal weapons of Sri Lankan kings, fascinating paintings of by gone eras and an excellent collection of antique demon masks. The most interesting among the exhibits are the regalia of the Kandyan Kings dating back to the 17th century. Here you can learn about the Cultural Triangle - the area between Kandy, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. Check out the old capital cities in Sri Lanka’s colourful past - well worth a visit if you have the time. After all that culture, you might want to soak up some greenery, so let your feet take you to the nearby park, next to the National Museum, Colombo’s largest park. The park is famous for its flowering trees, water channels and fountains. Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara: This is a famous Buddhist temple and is believed to be at the spot where the Buddha preached 2000 years ago. It has an excellent carving of a reclining Buddha, and is the site for an annual perahera (religious procession) in January. There are also several Hindu temples, which are called Kovils in Colombo. In the Sea Street in Colombo are several Hindu temples, the Ganeshan, the Old Kathiresan and the New Kathiresan with their colourful Gopurams (doorways). Other important temples are the Shiva Subramania Swami temple on Slave Island and the Sri Muthumariamman temple. Tea for two? Of course, Sri Lanka is known around the world for the quality of its tea. So it makes sense to pay a visit to the tea plantations in the hill country around Nuwara Eliya. There are several former colonial refuges with hotels and houses reminiscent of southern England’s green downs. Visit the Glenloch Tea Plantation and Factory for a guided tour. Stay at the Grand Hotel for its grand colonial style and golf course or the St Andrews Hotel for its excellent food including homegrown vegetables and its wildlife-watching trips. 22 International Destination Sacred past To wrap up your visit, make sure you soak up the timeless vibe at the sacred city of Kandy, which boasts a magnificent lake and temples. Stay at the Mahaweli Reach Hotel just out of town for its excellent food and peaceful gardens. If you visit in August, make sure you attend the Esala Perahara carnival procession, which goes on for 10 days. If not, buy some gems here, topaz or sapphire. The five cave temples of Dambulla contain reclining golden Buddhas thousands of years old and exotic cave paintings. The site is a must-see and has a truly spiritual aura. The only crowds here are throngs of schoolkids, dressed all in white, with long red ties, and the occasional monk in orange robes. Keen birdwatcher Dr Graham Lobley found Oman a captivating destination. Taking a closer look at the colourful birds and butterflies added a special dimension to his trip (Image sources: Photolibrary, Graham Lobley) It’s Oman After several visits to this spectacular country, the author always enjoys seeing the beautiful Muscat area, with its wonderful beaches, stunning mountain backdrops and mangrove wetlands at al Qurm. At al Qurm, you can relax at a comfortable hotel with stunning vistas, then start exploring. One hotel overlooks a picturesque small side creek where many brightly painted small fishing boats are moored. Typically, the fishermen set sail near sundown for the fishing grounds in the Gulf of Oman. This points to another of Oman’s natural treasures, the prolific marine life, which has attracted the attention of international marine biologists as well as serious recreational scuba divers. 25 When in Muscat, don’t forget to visit the scenic Qantab beach, as well as the intriguing covered souk at Mutrah. After soaking up the friendly, relaxed Arabian atmosphere of Muscat, consider exploring more of country’s dramatic natural beauty. Check out the rugged Hajar mountains then consider spending a few days in Dhofar in South Oman. With excellent roads, safe driving conditions and readily available rental cars at Muscat’s international airport, a flydrive adventure with a real difference awaits you in Oman. First, try the scenic two-hour drive through the mountains from Muscat to historic Nizwa to reveal some striking montane scenery with fascinating villages and extensive palm groves within the wadis. The village of al Beir with its delightful palm gardens is a must-visit spot en route. Some old watch towers stand out as hilltop sentinels above this old settlement, where the palm groves are carefully irrigated with water channels: using a traditional rotational irrigation system called falaj in Arabic. Bananas, citrus fruits, papayas and other crops are grown beneath the shaded, cooler canopy of these protective palms. 26 It’s Oman The eye-catching Plain Tiger is another large butterfly, which is widely distributed in Oman and common along the coastal Batinah coastal plain around Muscat. This butterfly is poisonous to most predators as its caterpillars feed on milkweed, which contains cardiac toxins. This striking orangey-brown, black and white butterfly is a close relative of the American Monarch. Another great side trip from Muscat is to Qurayyat via a very different mountain journey to reach the coast. The spectacular Mijlas Canyon is visible from the main road close to Qurayyat. There are many seabirds including gulls and terns on the coast at Qurayyat. Distant mountain views from the beach add another dimension to this unspoilt setting. The most beautiful birds to enjoy around Qurayyat, along the Batinah coastal plain are the delightful Little Green Bee-eater and striking Indian Roller. These avian jewels are easy to see at the al Qurm Natural Park in Muscat, which has an extensive area of mangroves with some open pools and sea inlets. This special location has attracted the highest number of different bird species at any single site - over 280 species - about half the total number for all Oman. 28 It’s Oman Salalah and the lusher Dhofar region in South Oman present a remarkable contrast to the Muscat area of northern Oman. Dhofar’s natural life is also dramatically different. Consequently, Dhofar holds many spectacular bird species which have a more African and even Oriental distribution. Colourful Rüppell’s Weavers can even be seen in some luxury beachside hotel grounds in Salalah, as well as at Tawi Atayr and other key natural sites. The attractive khors (saline creeks) typical of this region attract even more land and water birds as well as various eagles over the winter season, from October into April: the best of these is Khor Rawri, where the endangered Eastern Imperial Eagle can be seen until early April. But don’t forget to check out the cliffs at nearby Raysut from April to October, when there is a good possibility of seeing the iconic Red-billed Tropicbird, a fascinating seabird which is guaranteed to delight all those fortunate enough to get close-range views. But don’t worry if you miss out, as a boat trip from Muscat to Al Fahl island, visible from the shore at al Qurm, is also another reliable breeding site for this special bird. Regarding trip timing, visits during the cooler season from October to Avpril are normally recommended. This allows tourists to connect with the best of wonderful migrant and wintering birds. February to April will also provide good sightings of resident terrestrial breeding birds. In February, at the start of the breeding season, the fabulous rolling display flights of the male Indian Rollers can be witnessed around Muscat. But locals especially enjoy visiting Dhofar especially during September, when the monsoonal Khareef brings rain and remarkable greening of the countryside. Over summer, the eye-catching Greyheaded Kingfisher can also be found in Dhofar’s wooded wadis. Bird and butterfly watching and photography are an excellent way to begin to appreciate the varied habitat and nature and stay in shape at the same time. It also adds an extra special dimension to any trips into the stunning countryside of Oman, leaving memorable images long after one has left. It is indeed a magical place you may well want to return to. Reach for Advertorial the skies An Omani-German architectural and engineering company has big plans for the future of sustainable, eco-friendly building design in Oman Hoehler and Partner [H&P], an architectural and engineering company, is about to celebrate its third year in Muscat. A joint Omani-German venture, the company’s services include cost-effective project management, architectural, structural and mechanical design and supervision. Being the first Omani architectural company with a German background, H&P takes pride in its highly qualified team based in Oman and Germany, and continuously collaborates with world-famous architects to take on large-scale projects and win local and international competitions. This local office is lead by Mohammad Sultan al Salmy(Arch.), with the direct support of the founder of the main company, Ernst Hoehler (Dipl. Eng). “Oman is a delightful country with important architectural and cultural landmarks. Our office in Muscat with our Omani partnership supports a straight and clear understanding of architecture that respects its surroundings and is based on cultural, economic factors and creative goals,” Hoehler explained. Hoehler and Partner Gmbh, the German partner of H&P LLC, has been operating for over 41 years in Germany, Exhibition Hall and Art Gallery. To be constructed by end of 2012. and is based in Aachen and Hamburg. The German offices regularly deal with mega projects in joint ventures with other famous architects, including Norman Foster and Herzog & de Meuron. Some of the projects that H&P Gmbh has undertaken include one of the largest mosques in the world, Al Jazair Grand Mosque in Algeria, the Satellite Airport Terminal in Munich, and the Hotel, Residential and Philharmonic Concert Hall in Hamburg. H&P is the main consultant for some of the best known and latest projects in Oman, including the German University of Technology (GUTech), the University of Buraimi, the development of the Tourism Plan in Salalah, the new Porsche Centre and Showroom, and other projects that promise to establish the presence of German standards combined with traditional Omani architecture, distinctive in style and creativity. The company believes in maintaining local cultural architectural landmarks, and respecting the surroundings. Basing the designs on cultural and economic factors as well as creative goals is the driving force behind most of the projects in Oman, which forge educational and architectural links between Oman and Germany. Traditional Omani elements are incorporated into a modern style, using German architectural techniques. H&P is committed to the development and promotion of alternative energy supplies and services, and actively contributes to reducing climate change, and creating a sustainable future by offering different unconventional design solutions to fit the climatic environment, tailored to the client’s specific needs. The company strongly believes in the sustainable future of architecture in Oman, and takes pride in introducing “eco-friendly” approaches to architecture. Currently, the company uses state-of-the-art technology to save energy, while acknowledging that traditionally, Omani architecture has always been eco-friendly. H&P took part in the Muscat Green Days conference in October 2010, where the aim was to educate both students and members of the public about the importance of green building and environment conservation strategies. Progressive building services design involves a multitude of different engineering skills and Hoehler and Partner has experts in all the disciplines needed to design even the most complex of buildings. The disciplines work closely together within multi-disciplinary design groups, in order to achieve the high degree of integration and coordination essential to facilitate the construction process. Fine buildings are created when the aesthetic, functional and technical aspirations are in balance, and future operational considerations and maintenance requirements have been considered from the outset. The company’s design works have included chilled ceilings and floors, centralised district cooling, as well as utilising solar panels to provide electricity and for household usage. Marrying the unique elements of Omani architecture with German precision gives the office a special force in design and technical aspects. Despite only three years in Muscat, the size and scope of projects on hand show the efficiency and experience in architecture, project management and engineering consultancy. H&P is planning to launch a special department focusing on housing units which are based on green architecture. This department will be a division of H&P, adhering to the same standards, in a form of a studio. This decision was based on the on-going experience of a special project with the Research Council, focusing on eco-housing. The department will also address the public demand for H&P to design modern Omani housing units. Stop putting off your time at the gym and start looking for a personal training team (Image source: Photolibrary) Health & Beauty If you are a member of a gym, you will most likely find group fitness classes offered through the fitness center. If you have never tried a group fitness class before, now might be the time. When the colder months hit and it gets darker earlier, not only do we want to eat more to pack on the pounds for winter, but we also want to curl up and go to bed early or stay in a warm bed later in the morning rather than hitting the gym before or after our daily activities. By adding a group fitness class, you will be enticed to get out in the cold and get to the gym, and you might even make some friends while you’re at it. 35 Group Fitness for Cardio: Some of the most popular group fitness classes out there revolve around getting you the cardio you need to keep that heart healthy and burn a lot of calories quickly. Step aerobics classes are probably the most popular because they combine high-intensity cardio with some strength training if you use weights during the class. 36 Health & Beauty They are also great classes for anyone who wants to work on shaping up their core. Spinning classes are also incredibly popular for cardio. In a spinning class, an instructor will guide you through intense routines on a stationary bike. You’ll get your blood flowing in a spinning class, for sure. Many gyms also offer cardio dance classes like hip hop or Zumba. Zumba is a Latin dance-infused cardio class that helps people learn confidence and posture as it melts those pounds away. Group Fitness for Strength: Depending on your gym, you may also be able to find classes that help you build strength. These classes are often combination of weight and interval training classes in which you will do some work with equipment - free weights, medicine balls, Bosu balls, resistance cords, etc. - and some work with intervals across the room. These intervals may include jumps, lunges, or other instructor-led activities. These classes are great for work with your core, and great for toning your muscles.vv Group Fitness for Flexibility: Yoga and Pilates are the most popular group fitness classes for flexibility. In both yoga and Pilates, different movements are combined together to flow from pose to pose to increase both strength and flexibility. As you are moving through the poses, you will focus on breathing through any muscle pain and working deeper into your stretches to help build flexibility. Stretching is often overlooked in total body fitness, but it cannot only help you workout more by relaxing tense and overworked muscles, but it can also help prevent injury as you workout. Adding a yoga or Pilates class to your workout routine even once a week can have a huge effect on your total fitness. Aquatic Group Fitness: If your gym has a pool, you will probably find aquatic group fitness classes. These are great for cardio and for strength training, as you will get your heart rate up, but will also be able to use the water itself to add resistance to your workout. Water aerobics is surprisingly difficult, and also really fun. These classes are also easier on your joints, so if you have joint trouble, try a fitness class in the water. Hidden Benefits: Going to the gym alone can be really tough because it’s so easy to talk yourself out of going. If you are meeting someone there, it can be a lot easier to get there because someone else is depending on you to go. Group fitness classes add this same benefit, and can also change up your routine and help you shed those holiday pounds. (By Buzzle Staff and Agencies) of the CV 38 Business The art You apply for a job. You send your CV. Nobody calls you back. Perhaps you need to add some va-va-voom to the way you look on paper (Image source: Photolibrary) Business If you’re still using the first CV format you learned in school, no wonder you’re not getting call-backs. The rules have changed, and you may have been doing it wrong all this time. You’re competing with more people than ever before, and your CV is the employers’ first contact with you - make it count. Present the information they want in an easy-to-read format, and the hiring manager is more likely to read the whole page instead of skimming and tossing. Customise Bankers should stick with formal black and white, but creative fields generally prefer to see a bit of creativity. Showcase your talents right there on the page. You have to make your CV stand out from the other thousand in the pile, some of which are better-qualified than you. This is not an ad for a nightclub though, so keep it tasteful and somewhat subtle. Make it reflect the corporate climate of the company you’re sending it to. Customise some more If the job listing focuses more on skills than education, put your skills section first. If education seems more important than experience, lead with your Education section. Objectives are no longer necessary unless the job listing specifically asks for one. Make sure the skills and experience you highlight, match the skills and experience listed in the job ad - use the same words. going to win the Super Bowl. The only time your hobbies should make an appearance is if they directly relate to the job in question. For example, if you’re applying for a job with a nonprofit pet-welfare organisation, by all means mention the many weekends you volunteered at your local shelter. Name game It sounds like a no-brainer, but people sometimes get carried away with the creativity and treat the resume like letterhead. True, your letterhead may be beautiful with the contact information at the bottom or down the side, but imagine this: the hiring manager remembers your CV and wants to show it to her boss. She leafs through the stack on her desk, scanning the names at the top... and doesn’t see yours. She assumes it was lost, and moves on to the secondbest candidate. No reference Digitise Internet-based job applications generally require you to upload a digital CV. Don’t use the same file you print your hard copies from - use a web-optimised font like Georgia, and increase the space between the lines to about 120% to keep it readable. Don’t use indents on a digital resume, but keep your margins well-defined and clean. Combine Use your Work History section to highlight specific skills you developed or showcased at each job, and any accomplishments or awards you earned. Be specific - don’t say that you’re “intelligent and efficient,” offer examples of things you’ve done that prove it. Hobbies? Yawn For the most part, employers are concerned about how you’ll benefit them - your comic book collection doesn’t figure into the equation. Clear your resume of all references to your cat, your favorite movie, or who’s For better or worse, the internet is your reference now. You will be Googled prior to the interview, so maybe take the New Year’s Eve pictures down from your Facebook page. If you have some truly impressive references, print them out and bring a hard copy with you to the interview. No matter how perfect your resume is, there’s an awful lot of competition out there. Apply only to jobs that you are qualified for - don’t waste your (or the hiring managers’) time shooting the moon, because there are applicants out there who actually are qualified. You won’t get that job at NASA with a high school diploma, no matter how lovely your CV is. But keep networking, keep applying, and stay relevant. You’ll find your perfect fit yet. 39 40 Fashion & Trends Effortless elegance The spring summer 2012 collection is a playful collection, one which offers women styles for both day and night. Reviews 45 Smut By Alan Bennett Two short novellas This pair of wonderful tragicomic novellas by celebrated author, screenwriter, playwright, and actor Alan Bennett aren’t as risqué as he’d like you to believe, though if you’re looking for something to raise the eyebrows of the subway ladies, you’ve found the right book. That’s not to say that it isn’t full of ribald vagaries and duplicity, because rather satisfyingly, it is. In “The Greening of Mrs. Donaldson,” a middle-aged widow finds she quite enjoys the role-playing in her job as a “simulated patient” in a medical school, and arranges a strange rent agreement with her new tenants; meanwhile “The Shielding of Mrs. Forbes” hones in on a narcissistic husband who is keeping almost as many secrets as his mother. Books By Kevin Wilson A novel Wilson presents a unique, strange shorthand for describing parent-child deceptions and for ways in which creative art and destructive behavior intersect. Meet the Fangs, a self-destructive although ultimately loving family who actually appear on their family Christmas card baring long, sharp, fake teeth. When their avant-garde artist parents, who have dedicated themselves to making great art by sacrificing normality, plan one last performance, siblings Annie and Buster, returning home after their individual worlds collapse, are faced with a difficult decision. The Fort By Bernard Cornwell A historical novel Cornwell fans know what to expect - history as seen by the normal soldier. This latest offering is about the Penobscot Expedition of 1779, when 700 redcoats in a British garrison in Maine, Fort George, had to defend themselves against 900 local rebel militia and a fleet of 42 ships. ‘Captivate, kill or destroy the whole force of the enemy’ was the order given to the American soldiers. The battle that followed was a classic example of how the best-laid plans can be disrupted by personality and politics, and of how warfare can bring out both the best and worst in men. The pilot and copilot appear in the rear of the plane and begin walking up to the cockpit through the aisle. Both appear to be blind; the pilot is using a white cane, bumping into passengers as he stumbles down the aisle. The copilot is using a guide dog. Both have their eyes covered with sunglasses. The passengers do not react, thinking that it must be some sort of practical joke. However, the engines start and the plane begins to move down the runway. The passengers are worried now and, as the plane picks up speed, their voices get more hysterical. When there is only 20m of runway left, all the passengers start screaming. At the very last moment, the plane lifts off and is airborne. Up in the cockpit, the copilot breathes a sigh of relief and tells the pilot: “You know, one of these days the passengers aren’t going to scream, and we aren’t going to know when to take off!” Time Out Life’s lessons A sick old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and a four-year old grandson. The family ate together nightly at the dinner table, but the elderly grandfather’s shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass often milk spilled on the tablecloth. The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess and decided to set a small table in the corner. There, grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner at the dinner table. Since grandfather had broken dishes, his food was served in a wooden bowl. Sometimes when the family glanced in grandfather’s direction, he had a tear in his eye as he ate alone. The four-year-old watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. “What are you making?” he asked his son. “Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and mama to eat your food from when I grow up.” The parents were speechless. Tears started to stream down their cheeks. That evening the husband took grandfather’s hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. Neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled. Children are remarkably perceptive. Their eyes ever observe, their ears ever listen, and their minds ever process the messages they absorb. If they see us patiently provide a happy home atmosphere for family members, they will imitate that attitude for the rest of their lives.
