WORKING IN SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION
The Department of Education is seeking people who are interested in commencing work within public
schools in our area.
The School Administrative Support Staff (SASS) Reference Group welcomes any people looking to start
working in school administration to enrol in our SASS Induction training programs which will be held during
May at multiple venues across the Sydney area.
There will be no fee for this training and the only pre-requisite is that participants obtain a Working with
Children Check (WWC) clearance and apply for a Department of Education employee number through the
school office.
Please see the following link to apply for WWC clearance or contact your local Service NSW office.
https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-working-childrencheck?gclid=CKHK7euI58sCFQt6vQodoMEHZw
The aim of this training is to provide participants with an overview of school administrative roles, which
will allow them to be included on a casual staffing list for the schools in their local area.
You will find a package at the end of this Kalori which will contain all relevant information, course dates
and the forms which will need to be submitted to the school once you have your WWC approval number.
Further information can be provided by contacting the SASS Reference Group through email at
[email protected] or by telephoning our facilitators:

CONGRATULATIONS DONNA DILONARDO
I’d like to congratulate Donna Dilonardo, our Relieving School Administrative Manager, as she has been
successful in gaining a position in our regional deployment team for the implementation of Learning
Management Business Reform (LMBR) into schools across the Bankstown/Glenfield networks. Donna will
be based at Nuwarra Public School for six months beginning May 30th. I’d also like to congratulate and
thank Sue Trees and Maria Athanasiou for stepping up into the role of School Administrative Manager in
Donna’s absence. They are highly capable administrators and will ensure the smooth running of the school
throughout the remainder of 2016.
SCHOOL DISCO – THANK YOU TO OUR P&C
Last Friday we had our first disco for the year and it was a fantastic night filled with Hawaiian shirts, zinc,
glow sticks, leis and beach balls. The BBQ was a hit and the canteen volunteers did a great job serving
yummy chicken rolls and drinks for all to enjoy. Our DJ Glenn Marriott was pumping out the tunes and it
was great to see so many people of all ages having a dance throughout the night. I’d like to thank all the
PPPS staff who were able to come along and lend a hand and a huge thank you goes to our wonderful P&C
and all our volunteers for putting on such a successful night for the community….. I can’t wait for the next
one! There are some photos on the school’s web site to check out!
CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL
On Tuesday we had our annual Cross Country Carnival and in true PPPS style, everyone was there with
bells on. I was so impressed with the level of participation with all our K - 6 students getting in there and
having a go. It didn’t matter whether you were a serious competitor or just there to have a go and
challenge yourself, but everyone worked up a sweat and had a great time. What better way to finish the
race on such a hot day than with a snow cone! Thank you so much to Kylie Quach and our Band Committee
for having ice-cold snow cones waiting for our young competitors as a reward for their efforts. A huge
thank you also goes to all the parent volunteers who came to lend a hand on the course and to Mrs Austin
for organising and running such a great carnival to keep our kids fit and active.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS
As this is the last newsletter for the Term 1, I’d like to wish you all a very safe and enjoyable holiday. We’ve
had very productive term and I know the upcoming break is well deserved by all. Just a reminder that
students are due to return to school on Wednesday 27th April to commence Term 2. See you next term!

Stage 1 Report
TERM 1 REVIEW
Wow, where have the last 11 weeks gone? The term has flown by and our little Stage 1 students have
settled into their class and school routines well.
We hope you all have a wonderful break with your families and wish everyone a safe, happy and relaxing
holiday. We look forward to an exciting, fun filled Term 2. Thank you for your continued support.
GYMNASTICS
Next term we begin our gymnastics program. All Kindy, Year 1 and 2 students will need to wear their sports
uniform on Fridays next term, not on Thursdays anymore. Thank you.
Stage 2 Report
PRINCIPAL’S AWARDS
Congratulations to the following student who has received a Gold Principal’s award at assembly.
• Roger Au
PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION
Thank you boys and girls for your excellent effort in the public speaking competition! We all enjoyed every
speech – they were interesting and well presented.
Congratulations to all semi finalists who presented their speeches again in the hall in front of Stage 2.
The finalists going to district level are: Anna Tran, 4 Arequipa and Chloe Fischer, 3 Amazon.
GYMNASTICS
A reminder that the gymnastic program for Stage 2 starts on Wednesday of Week 1, which is the first day
back for students. Please remember to wear your sport uniform and joggers.
EQUIPMENT
The holidays are a good time to replenish all those little bits and pieces which may have been lost or used
up during the term. Several good pencils (no mechanical pencils please), blue and red pen, eraser, ruler,
glue stick and scissors are the basic requirements.
PROPERTY
Lost property is again starting to build up in our bag rooms! Please come and browse – jackets, music
notes, umbrellas, lunch boxes, etc. We often have to throw away perfectly good food containers because
they are unclaimed for so long they grow some very mysterious flora!
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
We would like to thank everyone for the effort they put into their learning, behaviour, sporting and other
endeavours this term. Most students have worked hard toward their goals and look forward to more
challenges next term. Stage 2 had their behaviour reward on Wednesday afternoon and the teachers are
so proud that nobody had to miss out. Please keep up the great effort, boys and girls!
Best wishes from the Stage 2 teachers!
Stage 3 Report
DANCESPORT CHALLENGE
Excitement is mounting for both the teachers and students for the start of this program in Term 2. Records
show that there are still a few students who have not returned notes and money in order to participate.
We encourage parents to check their records as we would like all Stage 3 students to participate as
assessment for the program will be on the half yearly report.
The program will operate every Tuesday, commencing Week 2 (Week 1 is a Staff Development Day). The
program will not be held during Week 3 due to NAPLAN.
STAGE 3 MINI FETE
We are hoping that students have shared this information with parents. Students have had opportunities
to discuss and plan with friendship groups to organise a stall or activity. Using a Project Based Learning
paradigm, students have been engaging and applying their higher order thinking and skill attainment
strategies.
Students are currently at the stage of submitting proposals, outlining all needs, costs, promotional
materials and expected profits. It involves many key learning areas, as well as providing a chance for the
students to investigate and use entrepreneurial skills – not forgetting a chance to have a fun learning
experience!
School holiday time would be a great opportunity for students to really streamline their ideas and foresee
any troubleshooting that may need to be addressed. The Stage 3 teachers are really looking forward to
seeing the students’ ideas and creativity during this learning experience.
BYOD
It has been a successful and positive term with Bring Your Own Device. The learning skills of both teachers
and students are constantly improving and developing.
HOLIDAY TIME
The 11 week term has flown past so quickly! We wish our students and families a restful school holiday
time. Recharge the batteries, have wonderful family and friend time so that everyone returns ready for a
busy Term 2.
We ask that all students check that all school requirements such as pencils, pens etc. are checked and
replenished. All belongings are to be clearly labelled as many names, particularly in clothing and hats, fade
from washing.
Library
Enjoy your holiday and try to make some time for relaxing with a good book. If you are not sure about
which library books you have at home, you can check your loans on our new library page! Log on and have
a look. If you find a good joke in the holidays, make sure you let me know next term so I can change our
jokes on the Orbit Page!

SNOW CONE FUNDRAISER
Many thanks to Kylie and all the helpers and people who donated cordial, cups and other contributions.
The money raised will go toward the cost of our Engadine and NSW Schools competitions.
BAND MEETING
Our next band meeting is on Monday of Week 3. Come along and become involved as much or as little as
you can manage.
TUTORIAL CHANGES
Mrs Stewart has made a few changes to times of tutorials and there will no longer be Tuesday afternoons.
If you are unsure of your new tutorial time, please see Mrs Stewart on Monday of Week 2.
Choir
EASTER EXTRAVAGANZA
The Senior Choir and the Infants Choir have been working very hard to learn new songs and refine their
performing skills for upcoming school and community performances. The choirs have a total of 67
enthusiastic members who give up their lunchtimes once a week to learn songs and develop performance
skills. On Saturday 26th March 2016, 34 representatives from our Senior and Infants Choirs performed at
Padstow for the Annual Easter Extravaganza. Our students were a great success as members of the
audience sang along to Peter Cottontail with our choir.
I would like to thank all the parents for their support and giving up part of their Easter to encourage their
children in this performance event. Our next out of school performance will be at East Hills Baptist
Church’s Treasure Mart Fete on 18th June 2016 at 12:00pm. Please put this date on your calendars and get
ready for another wonderful performance.
Chess
JUNIOR CHESS LEAGUE SCHOOLS COMPETITION
The competition starts on Friday 6 May (Week 2). The draw for teams and helpers will be issued in Week 1.
We have four teams – please note these are subject to change by the JCL organisers.
SRC
SOCCER GOAL SHOOTING COMPETITION
Thank you to all the students who entered the soccer goal shooting competition last Monday at lunchtime.
We had lots of fun and raised $37. We will hold another competition next term, maybe basketball goal
shooting. Date to be advised.
The money raised will go towards buying some new sports equipment for students to use at lunchtime.

Narris!

DISTRICT NETBALL
Congratulations to Lauren McComb, Alexia Pengue, Mackenzie Benson and Taylah Sommer for their
selection in the East Hills District Netball team. We wish them all the best of luck at the Sydney South West
Area Netball championships on Wednesday 18th May.
DISTRICT SELECTIONS
We have had a number of students selected into East Hills district sporting teams recently which is a
fantastic achievement. This is a gifted and talented pathway for selected students who excel in sport. Our
East Hills district is made up of 11 schools and therefore our students are competing against many other
talented athletes in the area. Each school is asked to send a maximum of 3 students to each trial as this
would immediately give the selectors 33 students to watch at any given trial. Students must be selected to
attend these trials and as you can imagine, our PSSA coaches have a very difficult task in selecting only 3
students from our school and it is mainly Year 6 students, or very talented Year 5 students who are given
this opportunity. On occasions, if we feel that we have more than 3 talented students in a particular sport,
then this is discussed with the convenor as well as the PSSA executive to allow a school to send more than
the allocated number. Congratulations again to our students who have gained selection so far in an East
Hills district team. Well done Picnic Point!
CROSS COUNTRY
Congratulations to the 48 children who will now represent Picnic Point PS at the East Hills District Cross
Country Carnival. The carnival will be in Week 4 - Tuesday 17th May at Padstow North PS.
Training will be held at school each morning (except Fridays) starting next term Wednesday 27th April at
8:10 am. It is very important that all competitors try to attend as many sessions as possible. Training is not
on if it is raining.
Thank you so much to the following parents who assisted on the day: Robyn Hayward, Leanne Fuelling,
Greg Brandtman, Sherry Brandtman, Rebecca Ballantine-Jones, Nadine Greer, Maria Lavett, Liz Katzakis
and Betty Wilson. Your help was very much appreciated.

When applying for a national police history check you must provide proof of your identity with your application. You will be asked
to provide personal identity documents that add up to a minimum of 100 points. The combination of documents supplied should,
as a minimum, evidence your full name and date of birth. All documents must be originals or certified true copies. A certified copy
means a document that has been certified as a true copy of an original by a person listed in Schedule 2 of the Statutory Declarations
Regulations 1993 (Cth) and is available from http://www.comlaw.gov.au by searching for "Statutory Declarations Regulations 1993".
Documents must be selected from the list below.
Change of Name

documents, you must provide evidence of the name change, e.g. Marriage or Change of Name Certificate issued by a State or
Territory Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages and Divorce papers issued by the Family Court. These documents must be
originals or certified true copies and DO NOT count towards the 100-points. If you use a change of name document you must

SECTION 6: GENERAL INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
This Form is used as part of the assessment process to determine whether a
person is suitable for employment or other engagement for work or other
entitlements.
Unless statutory obligations require otherwise, the information provided on
this Form will not be used without your prior consent for any purpose other
than in relation to the assessment of your suitability. You may be required to
complete another consent form in the future in relation to employment in
other positions.
The law affects Commonwealth authorities in the following ways:
•
a person with a conviction protected by Part VIIC does not have to disclose
that conviction to any person, including a Commonwealth authority,
unless an exclusion applies;
•
Commonwealth authorities are prohibited from accessing, disclosing or
taking into account spent convictions of Commonwealth offences.
NATIONAL POLICE HISTORY CHECK
A national police history check is an integral part of the assessment of your
suitability.
You should note that the existence of a record does not mean that you will be
assessed automatically as being unsuitable. Each case will be assessed on its
merit, so it is in your interest to provide full and frank details in the Form.
Information extracted from this Form will be forwarded to the CrimTrac
Agency and other Australian police agencies1 for checking action. By signing
this Form you are consenting to these agencies accessing their records to
obtain and disclose police history information that relates to you to:
New South Wales
In New South Wales the Criminal Records Act 1991 (NSW) governs the effect of a
person’s conviction for a relatively minor offence if the person completes a
period of crime-free behaviour, and makes provision with respect to quashed
convictions and pardons.
A “quashed” conviction is a conviction that has been set aside by the Court. A
“pardon” means a free and absolute pardon that has been granted to a person
because he/she was wrongly convicted of a Commonwealth, Territory, State or
foreign offence.
In relation to NSW convictions, a conviction generally becomes a “spent
conviction” if a person has had a 10-year crime-free period from the date of the
conviction. However, certain convictions may not become spent. These include:
a) the Accredited Agency named in Section 3 above; and
b) where applicable the employer/organisation named in Section 4 above.
Part VIIC and Crimes Regulations 1990 (Cth) provide for “statutory” or
“regulatory” exclusions that will prevent certain Commonwealth convictions
from being spent in certain circumstances.
Police history information may include outstanding charges, and criminal
convictions/findings of guilt recorded against you that may be disclosed
according to the laws of the relevant jurisdiction and, in the absence of any
laws governing the release of that information, according to the relevant
jurisdiction's information release policy.
•
SPENT CONVICTIONS SCHEMES
The following information is provided as general guidance and is not
exhaustive.
Queensland
Under the Criminal Law (Rehabilitation of Offenders) Act 1986 (Qld) a conviction
automatically becomes spent upon completion of the prescribed
(rehabilitation) period. This period is:
The aim of Spent Convictions legislation2 is to prevent discrimination on the
basis of certain previous convictions. Spent convictions legislation limits the
use and disclosure of older, less serious convictions and findings of guilt.
Spent convictions of specific offences will be released where the check is
required for certain purposes regardless of how old the convictions are.
Each Australian police agency will apply the relevant Spent Convictions
legislation/information release policy prior to disclosure.
If further information or clarification is required please contact the individual
police agencies directly for further information about their release policies
and any legislation that affects them.
Commonwealth
Part VIIC of the Crimes Act 1914 (Cth) deals with aspects of the collection, use
and disclosure of old conviction information. The main element of this law is
a “Spent Convictions Scheme”. The aim of the Scheme is to prevent
discrimination on the basis of certain previous convictions, once a waiting
period (usually 10 years) has passed and provided the individual has not reoffended during this period. The Scheme also covers situations where an
individual has had a conviction “quashed” or has been “pardoned”.
A “spent conviction” is a conviction of a Commonwealth, Territory, State or
foreign offence that satisfies all of the following conditions:
•
it is 10 years since the date of the conviction (or 5 years for juvenile
offenders); AND
•
the individual was not sentenced to imprisonment or was not sentenced
to imprisonment for more than 30 months; AND
•
the individual has not re-offended during the 10 years (5 years for juvenile
offenders) waiting period; AND
•
a statutory or prescribed exclusion does not apply. (A full list of exclusions
is available from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner).
•
•
•
•
10 years for convictions of indictable offences where the offender was an
adult at the time of conviction; and
•
5 years for other convictions (summary offences or where the offender
was a juvenile).
Where a person is convicted of a subsequent offence (an offence other than a
simple or regulatory offence) during the rehabilitation period, the period runs
from the date of the subsequent conviction.
Convictions where the offender is sentenced to more than 30 months
imprisonment (whether or not that sentence is suspended) are excluded from
the regime.
Once the rehabilitation period has expired, it is lawful for a person to deny
(including under oath) that the person has been convicted of the offence, and
the conviction must be disregarded for occupational licensing purposes (subject
to certain exceptions, see below). It is unlawful for any person to disclose the
conviction unless:
•
•
•
Generic Application Form (Agency) v1.3
the convicted person consents;
the Minister has granted a permit authorising disclosure (where there is a
legitimate and sufficient purpose for disclosing);
the disclosure is subject to an exemption.
South Australia
Release of information on a National Police Check is governed by the Spent
Convictions Act 2009 (SA). It is an offence to release information regarding the
convictions of a person if those convictions are deemed to be ‘spent’ under the
Act.
A spent conviction is one that cannot be disclosed or taken into consideration
for any purpose. Eligible convictions become spent following a 10-year
conviction and proven offence-free period for adults, and a 5-year conviction
and proven offence-free period for juveniles.
The Act defines a conviction as:
•
•
1 Australian Federal Police, The New South Wales Police Force, Victoria Police,
Queensland Police Service, South Australia Police, Western Australia Police,
Tasmania Police Service, Northern Territory Police Force.
2 Applicable Spent Convictions legislation, as amended from time to time.
where a prison sentence of more than 6 months has been imposed
(periodic or home detention is not considered a prison sentence);
convictions against companies and other corporate bodies;
sexual offences pursuant to the Criminal Records Act 1991; and
convictions prescribed by the Regulations.
a formal finding of guilt by a Court;
a finding by a Court that an offence has been proved.
Certain convictions can never be spent. These include but are not limited to:
•
convictions of sex offences;
•
convictions where a sentence is imposed of more than 12 months
imprisonment for an adult, or 24 months imprisonment for a juvenile.

SECTION 6: GENERAL INFORMATION (cont)
South Australia (cont.)
Schedule 1 of the Act sets out a number of exceptions to the rule where spent
convictions can be released. Some examples of this include:
•
•
the care of children;
the care of vulnerable people (including the aged and persons with a
disability, illness or impairment);
•
activities associated with statutory character tests for licensing.
Interstate offences are released in accordance with that State or Territory's
spent conviction / rehabilitation legislation and policy. Intelligence-type
information is not released.
Victoria Police
For the purposes of employment, voluntary work or occupational licensing/
registration, police may restrict the release of a person’s police record
according to the Victoria Police “Information Release Policy”. If you have a
police record the “Information Release Policy” may take into account the age
of the police record and the purpose for which the information is being
released. If 10 years have elapsed since you were last found guilty of an
offence, police will, in most instances, advise that you have no disclosable
court outcomes. However, a record over 10 years may be released if:
•
•
•
it includes a term of imprisonment longer than 30 months;
it includes a serious, violent or sexual offence and the check is for the
purpose of working with children, elderly people or disabled people;
it is in the interests of crime prevention or public safety.
Findings of guilt without conviction and good behaviour bonds may be
released. Recent charges or outstanding matters under investigation that
have not yet gone to court may also be released.
Western Australia
Under Section 7(1) of the Spent Convictions Act 1988 (WA) only “lesser
convictions” can be spent by Western Australia Police, after a time period of
10 years plus any term of imprisonment that may have been imposed. A
lesser conviction is one for which imprisonment of 12 months or less, or a fine
of less than $15,000 was imposed.
All other convictions, such as “serious convictions” applicable under Section 6
of the Act can only be spent by applying to the District Court. At the time of
sentencing, the Court may make a “spent conviction order” under the
Sentencing Act 1995 (WA) that the conviction is a spent conviction for the
purposes of the Spent Convictions Act 1988 (WA).
Northern Territory
Under the Criminal Records (Spent Convictions) Act 1992 (NT), a conviction
becomes spent automatically (in the case of an adult or juvenile offender
convicted in a Juvenile Court) and by application to the Police Commissioner
(in the case of a juvenile convicted in an adult court) upon completion of the
prescribed period. The prescribed period is:
•
10 years for offences committed while an adult; and
•
5 years for offences committed as a juvenile
The period starts on completion of any sentence of imprisonment. A
subsequent traffic conviction is only taken into account for prior traffic
offences (except more serious traffic offences which cause injury or death).
Once a conviction becomes spent:
• a person is not required to disclose the existence of the conviction;
• questions relating to convictions and a person’s criminal record will be
taken only to apply to unspent convictions;
• it is unlawful for another person to disclose the existence of a spent
conviction except as authorised by the Act;
• spent convictions are not to be taken account in making decisions about
the convicted person’s character or fitness.
The period begins to run from the date a sentence of imprisonment is
completed, or, where no sentence of imprisonment is imposed, from the date of
conviction. A person must not be subject to a control order or convicted of an
offence punishable by imprisonment during this period. If a person is convicted
of an offence, which was committed in the crime-free period, but the conviction
is not incurred until after the crime-free period, the spent conviction may be
revived and will not become spent again until the offender has achieved the
relevant crime-free period in respect of the later offence.
The effect of conviction becoming spent is that:
•
•
•
•
•
the convicted person is not required to disclose any information
concerning the spent conviction;
any question concerning criminal history is taken only to apply to unspent
convictions;
references in Acts or statutory instruments to convictions or character or
fitness does not include spent convictions, and it is an offence to disclose
information regarding spent convictions;
it is unlawful for a person who has access to a person’s criminal record held
by a public authority to disclose a spent conviction;
it is unlawful for a person to fraudulently or dishonestly obtains
information about a spent conviction from records kept by a public
authority.
Tasmania
Under the Annulled Convictions Act 2003 (Tas) a conviction is annulled upon
completion of the prescribed period of good behaviour. This period is:
•
•
10 years where the offender was an adult at the time of conviction; or
5 years where the offender was a juvenile at the time of conviction.
A person is taken to be of good behaviour for the required period if, during that
period, he or she is not convicted of an offence punishable by a term of
imprisonment. If the person is so convicted, the qualifying period (for the
original offence) starts to run from the date of the subsequent conviction. A
subsequent traffic conviction is only taken into account for prior traffic offences
(except more serious traffic offences which cause injury or death).
Only “minor” convictions can become annulled. A minor conviction is a
conviction other than one for which a sentence of imprisonment of more than 6
months is imposed, a conviction for a sexual offence or a prescribed conviction.
A minor conviction is also annulled if the offence ceases to be an offence.
Once an offence is annulled the convicted person is not required to disclose any
information concerning the spent conviction. Any question concerning criminal
history is taken only to apply to unspent convictions, and references in Acts or
statutory instruments to convictions or character or fitness do not include spent
convictions. An annulled conviction or the non-disclosure of the annulled
conviction is not grounds for refusing the person any appointment, post, status
or privilege or revoking any appointment, post, status or privilege.
•
•
•
•
a person is not required to disclose the existence of the conviction;
questions relating to convictions and a person’s criminal record will be
taken only to apply to unspent convictions;
it is unlawful for another person to disclose the existence of a spent
conviction except as authorised by the Act;
spent convictions are not to be taken account in making decisions about
the convicted person’s character or fitness.

Australian Capital Territory
Generally, under the Spent Convictions Act 2000 (ACT), a conviction becomes
spent automatically at the completion of the prescribed (crime-free) period.
This period is:
•
•
10 years for convictions recorded as an adult; or
5 years for convictions recorded as a juvenile.
