neighborhood),ontheslopesoftheCaelianhill,overlookingthePalatine,Aventine,and
Esquilinehills.Thenewlyrestoredbuilding,whichdatesbacktotheturnofthe20thcentury,is
paintedthewarmyellowochretypicalofRome’scenter.ItswindowsopenontoViaOstiliaand
twosideroads,ViadeiS.S.QuattroandViaCapod’Africa.
ThesiteisintheheartofRome,enclosedandservedbylargethoroughfaressuchasVia
Labicana,ViaCelioVibenna,Viadell’AmbaAradam,PiazzadiPortaSanGiovanni,Via
MerulanaandViaEmanueleFiliberto:beneathhererunthetwolinesofthesubway,withathird
underconstruction.Still,theareaaroundtheGatewayitselfisanoasisofpeaceandquiet,with
narrowstreetswherethetrafficofcarsisverylimited.Thesurroundingneighborhoodislively,
andmainlyinhabitedbyRomans(bybirthandadoption).Whilethereareanumberofhotelsin
thisstrategicandbeautifullocation,theareaisnotpopulatedbyhordesoftouristslikeother
centralRomanneighborhoods.
ModernlifeflowsaroundtheGatewayalongside4th-and5th-centurychurches,withtheir1600s
and1700sfaçades—allexamplesofthecenturies-oldstratificationofRomanhistory.
TheNDbuildingislocatedinanimportantcenterforthehistoryofEarlyChristianRomeand
featuresimportantbasilicasandchurchessuchasSanClemente,SanGiovanniinLaterano,
SantaMariainDomnicaandSantiQuattroCoronati.Theneighborhoodisalsoasitetraditionally
