Wahine 74% Strong at Queen’s
The Queen’s Health Systems boasts
3,770 employees, making it one of
Hawai‘i’s biggest employers. But did

be the presenting sponsor of Hawai‘i
Business magazine’s Wahine Forum, to
be held on Tuesday, October 19, from
8:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Sheraton
Waikiki, Maui Ballroom.
The Wahine Forum is Hawai‘i’s leading women’s conference for women in
business and civic leaders. This year’s
keynote address will be given by Pam
Omidyar, co-founder of the Omidyar
Network, and Pat Christen, president
and CEO of the HopeLab. Both will
share insights on how to create a values-driven organization. Over a dozen
prominent Hawai‘i women leaders will
present sessions on pioneering, negotiation, career reinvention, new media
security issues, office makeover strategies and executive advancement. Workshops, offered in two sessions, will give
attendees the opportunity to tailor
their selections to their own interests.
Women who seek greater influence
and authority in their field, the business
community, and in civic service will benefit from the event. These include everyone from sole proprietors to nonprofit
leaders to managers and executives from
organizations of all sizes. Attendees can

Men should be screened annually beginning at age 50 as a routine part of
their yearly checkup.
FTC had an opportunity to cut into
the lead but failed to capitalize.
Vocal leader Mel Baxa (RN T8DH),
who has now won four championships
in five QBL seasons, led the celebration, adding, “it’s all about the heart.
We played an incredible game. Erwin
shot BIG for us tonight. This is an
amazing win!” Erwin summarized his
perfect night by stating, “I just felt it
tonight!” smiling as the team hoisted
the Queen’s cup.

loyal fans, and families, QMC Help

the QBL website, the staff at Lanakila

a day shy of finishing the course, so they

The main thing about being an OR
nurse is to be a strong patient advocate in the operating room. “It’s
about protecting patients by speaking up for what’s right, making sure
they’re safe during surgery, and ensuring proper care during surgery,”
said Del Roman, RN. “Your patient
has entrusted you to provide care
while they are asleep.” That’s all easier said than done. New graduates and
other nurses who want to become OR
nurses must take Queen’s Periop 101,
a six-month, 40-hour a week training
program, for which Del is an assistant instructor. The principal Surgical Services instructor is Ruth Koehl,
RN. RNs Eli Alquiza, Robert Hendrickson, Oscar Querido, Gina Shin,
and Karen Vea successfully completed the course.
Held once a year, the course covers both the clinical and didactics.
An OR nurse must continually learn
new technology, and be familiar with
diverse types of surgeries, including
general, orthopedics, endovascular,
cardiovascular, neurology, ENT, GYN,
robotic surgery, and everything else.
The trainees are paired with preceptors, who play a big part in the training. Preceptors take them through
each service line and help them
throughout the six-month course. Designed by AORN (Association of Pe-
rioperative Registered Nurses), the
periop class has trained at least four
nurses per year since 1994. However,
Queen’s has had its own training program since the 1960s.

Shane Morita, MD, is the recipient
of the North Central Cancer Treatment
Group (NCCTG) Junior Faculty Academic Community Partnership Award.
Dr. Morita’s study on melanoma was
one of only two awards granted to
more than 375 applicants. The award
