Scholastic ELT Readers are a series of contemporary
film and TV adaptations, original teenage fiction and
classic literature, specifically targeted at teenagers
learning English. They are published at four levels
following a carefully graded syllabus.

PEOPLE AND PLACES
Billy Elliot
The Scholastic range of titles reflects a world that
teenagers will instantly recognise. Popular film and TV
series such as Superman, Lost and The OC sit alongside
coming-of-age classics like Billy Elliot and Angela’s Ashes.
Real teenage issues and themes such as bullying and
relationships are tackled in original fiction titles, and
classic literature is injected with new life by tying in with
recent films and TV series such as Pride and Prejudice and
Jane Eyre.
Billy Elliot
Billy is 12 years old. He lives in
Everington with his dad, brother and
nan. His mum died two years
ago. He loves music and
dancing.

Places
Michael
Everington is a mining town
near Durham in the north-east
of England. Most of the men
here are miners.
The story starts in 1984.
Mines are closing all over
Britain. The miners are angry.
They want to keep their jobs.
There are no other jobs for the
miners in Everington. They
decide to go on strike.
But some miners still go to
work. They want the money.
The strikers call them ‘scabs’.
Billy’s best friend.
Nan
Billy’s grandmother.
She’s 80. She loved
dancing when she
was young.
The Social is a club for the
people of Everington. They
meet their friends here and
have a beer. There are boxing
lessons and ballet lessons at
the Social.
Police and miners in 1984.
Billy’s dad. He’s a miner. He’s
on strike.
Mrs Wilkinson /
‘Miss’
Tony Elliot
Billy’s brother. He’s 20 years
old. He’s a miner and he’s on
strike too. He hates the
police and he hates scabs.

Billy’s ballet teacher. She lives
with her husband and
daughter Debbie. She teaches
ballet at the Social. The girls
and Billy call her ‘Miss’.

❝I want to be perfect!’❞
What do you think?
Why not?
Students’ different tastes and interests are acknowledged
in the broad spread of titles, ranging from the light (SpiderMan, The Pink Panther) to the thought-provoking (Touching
the Void and Carl Hiaasen’s ecological thriller Hoot).
Innovative design
The Royal Ballet School is a
big school in London. They
teach ballet here.
Billy and his family live in a street
like this.
Today in the 21st
century, plastic surgery
has become normal.
You can even watch
plastic surgery
operations on TV. But is
it worth the pain?
What did Jenna Franklin want for her 16th birthday
present? An MP3 player? A new computer?
No – plastic surgery! In a magazine survey, 35% of
teenage girls said they would like plastic surgery. It’s
expensive and painful … and it doesn’t always work.
So, why do we want it so much?
Confidence
Helen Johnston works on a
magazine for teenagers called
Bliss. ‘A lot of girls think they
should look perfect. They might
not feel confident with their
friends or boyfriends,’ she says.
‘They think their lives would be
perfect if they had the perfect
nose or perfect legs.’
Nobody’s perfect
Famous people worry about
their appearance too. Lots of
pop and TV stars have had
some kind of plastic surgery.
They want a younger face,
bigger lips, smoother skin …
or even a different skin colour!
Think of some famous people who have had plastic surgery.
Do they look better or worse, do you think?
60
Chris, 16
• Plastic surgery doesn’t
change your life. You stay
the same person with the
same problems.
Jane, 15
• Everyone is different. The
world would be very boring
if we all looked the same.
• Appearance is just a small
part of a person. Your
personality is important too.
Enjoy your life and your
friends, and remember that
nobody is perfect.
"I don’t like very
thin girls. They
look like men!
J-Lo is my perfect
woman."
"I like boys who
look different. I
don’t want to go
out with Orlando
Bloom or Brad
Pitt!"
Pete, 15
"I like girls who
have their own
look and style."
Kath, 14
“I love boys
with red hair!”

Illustrated with inspiring full-colour graphics, these readers are designed to attract your students to reading.
Images tie in with the film or TV series, and creative formats such as blogs, manga stories and comic strips
generate instant appeal among teenagers. Navigation is straightforward and levels are clearly indicated with
a distinctive colour scheme.

At the back of each reader is a magazine-style Fact File section. The Fact Files include interviews and
behind-the-scenes features, as well as presenting aspects of UK / US culture and exploration of themes
developed in the reader. This provides cross-cultural information for students to explore autonomously or
as a class. The easy-to-read format further adds to the appeal.
Activities, audio and extra resources
The self-study section ensures that students are able to check comprehension as
they progress through each story, with activities for before and after each section.
Free online teacher’s resource sheets provide more activities, suggestions for
full exploitation of the reader plus follow-up project work. Most readers are also
accompanied by an audio recording of the story.

moves. He thinks it’s cool.
‘Leg out, arm out, one two!’ I said. ‘Eyes to the front.’
Michael laughed. ‘When’s the next lesson?’
‘I’m not going,’ I said. ‘Ballet’s for girls. I feel stupid.’
‘You are stupid!’ Michael laughed. ‘Anyway, it’s not just
for girls. It’s different for men. Men are stronger.’
He was right. I can jump higher than the girls in the
ballet class. And I’m better than most of them.
So I went again. On Saturday, I took my 50p from the
kitchen table and I went to the Social. This week, the class
was in a different room. That was good because I didn’t
want to see George.
At the start, it was boring.
I didn’t know the moves.
So I stopped. Miss came
over.
‘What are you
doing?’
‘I don’t know the
moves, Miss,’ I said.
‘Follow the girls. Go to
the back and watch them.
And … one, two, three.’
That was OK but it was still a bit
boring. Then Miss showed us the spin. You spin around
and around very fast and then you stop. You must stay in
the same place. It looks great but it’s very difficult. You fall
on the floor a lot. We all tried it.
‘Do it at home,’ Miss said, ‘Try again and again. You can
do it.’
At the end of the class, Miss came over to me. ‘So, are
you coming next week?’
‘I don’t know, Miss.’
She looked at my ballet shoes. ‘Give me those, then.’

It was Officer Delinko’s dream to be a detective. He
got up at five the next morning and drove to the site. He
parked his car and waited. It was still dark and he was
very tired. He fell asleep.
When he woke up, it was still dark. He couldn’t see
anything, but he felt hot. What time was it? He heard a
noise outside the car and opened the door. Curly was
there … in the brilliant sunshine.
‘Has something happened?’ Delinko asked.
‘Come and see for yourself,’ said Curly.
Officer Delinko got out of his car and looked.
‘Oh, no!’ he said. There was black paint all over his car
windows.
Roy didn’t want to go to school on Monday. He was

After school, Roy took his letter to Dana Matherson’s
house. Dana came to the door. His face wasn’t pretty.
‘That’s terrible,’ thought Roy. ‘I didn’t know I hit him so
hard!’
‘What do you want?’ said Dana.
‘I came to give you this,’ said Roy. He gave Dana the
letter.
‘Get lost, cowgirl,’ said Dana. ‘I’m going to get you.
Then you’ll be sorry!’
Later that day, Roy got out his bicycle and rode to the

Oliver and Eugene
We get home and Oliver is sitting on Dad’s knee. His
face is bright red and he’s looking at the ashes of the dead
fire. Dad’s telling him a story but he’s not listening.
‘He’s not well,’ says Mam. ‘He’s hot.’ She gives Dad the
ticket from the St Vincent de Paul for the coal. ‘We need a
fire,’ she says. ‘To heat some milk for Oliver.’
Dad and I go down to Dock Road. But it’s dark and
closed. Women and small children are picking up coal
that’s dropped from lorries onto the road.
‘There, Dad. There’s coal.’ I point.
‘Oh, no, son. We won’t pick coal off the road. We’re not
beggars.’
He tells Mam everything is closed. When I tell her about
the coal on the road, she gets up.
‘If you’re too proud to pick up coal, I’m not.’ She gets a
bag and takes me and Malachy with her. The other women
have gone. We fill our bag with bits of coal. We pick up
anything that burns – coal, wood, paper.
Dad is walking up and down with Oliver when we get
back. We show him the coal.
‘Oh, I knew you’d get the coal,’ he says. ‘I said a prayer
to St Jude. He’s the saint for people with nothing.’
‘I got the coal,’ says Mam, ‘with no help from St Jude.’
‘You shouldn’t pick up coal from Dock Road like a
beggar. It isn’t right. It’s a bad example for the boys,’ he
replies.
‘Then you should have sent St Jude down to Dock
Road.’
Malachy says he’s hungry and I’m hungry too. But we
have to wait while Mam heats milk for Oliver. She tries to

It’s Saturday morning. Sonya is shopping in Oxford
Street with Silvio, not with me. The Laceys are working.
Saturday is a big day at the cinema, and at the police
station.
There are only two people in the Double Decker Internet
Café, me and the owner – and 30 computers. The
owner’s name is Jeff. He’s old – maybe 25. He has
brown hair and blue eyes. Maybe he reads this blog.
He asks me, ‘Do you like my café?’
‘Very, very much,’ I say.
He smiles and touches my hand.

I like Japan, but sometimes I feel lonely too.

INTERNET CAFÉS
The world loves internet cafés. There are about 100,000
internet cafés in the world – 80 of them in London. How many
internet cafés are there in your town?
London’s Easy Internet Café has about 400 computers. But many cafés in
India and China only have one or two computers. ‘It’s not important,’ says
Arun, 16, from Delhi. ‘With one computer, I can talk to the world.’
‘I love the internet
café in my town.
I play games there or
surf the internet.’
Sehlu, 13, Zimbabwe
‘I surf on wi-fi

cafés are dead!’
Wayne, 15, Wales
‘I shop online at an
internet café. I’m not
good with computers,
but the people at the
café help me.’
Margaret, 60, England
‘Internet cafés are
expensive. I surf the
net at the library. You
don’t pay there, but
you can’t play
computer games.’

PEOPLE AND PLACES
Malcolm in the Middle
Krelboyne
Picnic
This is my big brother, Francis. He’s cool,
but he isn’t often at home. He goes to
school in Alabama, 1500km from here.
Lois, the mothers
at this school
don’t want you
here. Remember
that.
The parents are angry.
This is my mum, Lois …
Meat! I don’t understand it.
This is terrible.
Malcolm is thinking.
Yes. All women are bad for you.
Francis, can I ask
you a question?
We’re talking about
you, right? Look, we
all know about you.
You’re clever. What’s
the problem?
… and my dad, Hal.
No, I mean …
Hi. I’m Malcolm. I’m in a
class for clever children at
school – the Krelboyne class.
I hate being a Krelboyne.
OK. No problem.
OK, you’ve got a friend, right?
But your friend’s different. He’s
a freak. But he’s still your friend,
right?
This is my brother
Reese. He hates
school work. He
loves hitting people
– usually me.
This is Stevie. He can’t
walk. And he talks slowly
because he’s ill. But he’s a
good friend - my only friend
in the Krelboyne class.
Bad-mouth boys always
have terrible mothers.
And why is Malcolm in
the Krelboyne class?
He isn’t very clever. It’s
not right.
Poor Caroline!
And this is my little
brother Dewey.
He doesn’t hit me.
But that’s the only
good thing about
him.
This is Caroline, my teacher.
She’s OK, but she cries a lot.
She likes being friends with
her students. But who wants
a teacher for a friend?!
Look! It’s Malcolm!
Malcolm’s family come and
watch his show.
This picnic is
terrible.
Find a new job,
Caroline.
PLACES
Our house: I sleep, eat and watch TV here – and hit my
brothers.
Our school: I study here – and people laugh at me. People
laugh at all the Krelboynes.

Yeah, but … Oh, it
isn’t important.

in the same room as
our children.

Let’s dance!
Some people say, ‘The British can’t dance!’ Is that true?
Maybe, but they still love dancing. So who cares? These
dances were all in fashion in the UK in the last 100 years.
Use your dictionary to find new words.
Time: the 1920s
LESTON
Dance: THE CHAR
e
Music: jazz, ragtim
This dance came to
the UK from South Carolina in the
US. It came with shorter skirts and
shorter hair for women. British
girls loved it. Their mothers hated
it. It’s a very fast dance. You flap
your arms and kick your legs out.
Time: the 1950s
Dance: JIVING
Rock ‘n’ roll
Music: rock ‘n’
roll, Elvis
came to
Britain with
Bill Haley’s film, Rock Around the Clock.
When British teenagers saw it in cinemas,
they started dancing! They danced
everywhere – in the cinemas, in the streets …
You do this dance with a partner. The women
wear big skirts and short socks. The men wear
straight trousers and soft shoes.
This easy dance started with the Beatles
music. One of their songs is called ‘Twist
and Shout’. You twist your hips in time
to the music. You can do this dance
with someone or on your own.

In his taxi (to the wrong part of Paris)
Mr Bean sees these famous places.
Mr Bean makes careful plans for
his holiday. First, he takes the
train – the Eurostar – from London
to Paris. It takes about 2.5 hours.
It goes under the sea between
England and France. It arrives at
one of Paris’s six train stations.
The train to Cannes goes from one
of the other stations.
The Louvre is one of the most
famous art galleries in the world. You
can see the Mona Lisa here.
The Eiffel Tower is the most famous
building in Paris. Six million people go
up the tower every year.
The beautiful church Notre Dame is
over 650 years old.

A car came and Mr Bean had one hand on it. The car
pulled him fast down the road. The car turned and now
Mr Bean was by a big country house. He heard the sound
of chickens. Yes! The chickens – and the ticket – were here.

Ancient pyramids at Giza
The Ancient Egyptian empire first grew
around the river Nile in North Africa almost
5000 years ago. The Egyptians put the
bodies of their dead kings deep inside their
pyramids. They thought that the king could
climb up and join the sun-god in the sky.
The Great Pyramid of Giza, near Cairo, is one of the most famous buildings
in the world. It took about 2,300,000 big stones to make it!

Fra Pavel was not
happy with the Master’s
answer. He waited for
the Master to leave the
room. Then he quickly
put something into the
whisky. He smiled a
small smile, and then he
left too.
‘He’s trying to kill Uncle Asriel!’ said Lyra.
‘You don’t know that,’ said Pan. ‘And we’re in trouble if
someone finds us here.’
At that moment, Lord Asriel came into the room with
his dæmon, Stelmaria. He wanted a drink before the
others arrived. He put some whisky into a glass. He was
about to drink it when the cupboard door crashed open.
Lyra jumped from the cupboard and hit the glass out of
her uncle’s hand. It broke. Lord Asriel was very surprised
and caught Lyra’s arm.
‘The man from the Magisterium wants to kill you,’ she
cried. He put something in the whisky! I saw him.’

‘Ponton,’ said Clouseau, ‘Isn’t that clever? The body fell
exactly inside that white line.’
‘I think they drew the line later,’ Ponton said, but
Clouseau wasn’t listening.
‘Yes, we are looking for a highly intelligent killer,’
said Clouseau. ‘Ponton, we are going to talk to this man,
Raymond Larocque. Where is his Casino?’

he steered the cause through parliament, enduring countless

clean her skin. The next day, a group
of hunters arrived and rescued her.
The German film-maker, Werner
Herzog, was about to travel on this
same flight, but the flight was full.
In 2000, he made a film about
Juliane and the crash. It was
called Wings of Hope.
Juliane Koepke was a German
teenager living in Lima, Peru. On 24
December 1971, she was on a flight
to Pucallpa with her mother. They
were going there to meet her father.
Suddenly, the plane flew into a
terrible storm. Juliane looked out
of the window. The plane’s right
wing was on fire. “This is the end of
everything,” her mother said. After
that, all Juliane could remember was
falling through cold air.
Three hours later, she woke up
in the Amazon forest. She was still
in her seat but there was no sign of
her mother. Of the 92 people on the
plane, Juliane was the only survivor.
Then she remembered something
her father had told her. “If you’re
lost in a forest, go downhill. It
always leads to water. And water
leads to people.”
For ten days, Juliane walked
through the forest. Worms got into
her skin and she felt very weak and
sick. Finally she came to an empty
camp. In the camp, she found a
can of petrol and some salt. She
Michael has put a lot of care into building his boat. It’s
almost ready to go, but he wants to spend more time on
it. He wants it to be just right. But this morning Dr Arzt,
a science teacher, told him to leave immediately. Arzt
explained that the monsoon* season was coming. Very
soon the winds would change. The boat would go south
into cold Antarctic waters, not north where they could be
rescued.

Chris Carmack (Luke):
I didn’t think I’d get the part
because I’m nothing like Luke.
But I knew lots of guys like
Luke in high school.
‘Maybe some day we can be more than just friends,’ he
thought.
Marissa looked at Ryan and at all the people around them.
‘Everything will be OK if Ryan is here,’ she thought.
‘Tonight is perfect. I know Luke left me, but I’m OK. And I
finally stood up to Mom. I can finally be me.’
Suddenly there was a lot of shouting. It was Holly’s
dad, Greg Fisher, and he was shouting at Jimmy. People
started looking at them. Soon, a crowd of people were
standing around them. Marissa heard the noise and turned
round to look. She was just in time to see Greg Fisher hit
her dad. Hard. Jimmy fell to the floor. He was unconscious.
Marissa ran to her dad. She sat down next to him and
held his head.
‘Dad,’ she cried softly. ‘That’s what you’ve been hiding.
Why won’t you talk to me?’

The doctors arrived. Marissa looked at her dad once
more and then ran out of the room. Ryan watched Marissa
disappear. He wanted to follow her. But he knew she
needed time alone.
Seth came over. ‘Hey, is it OK if I walk home with
Anna? I know she was your partner, but …’ he asked
Ryan.
‘No, sure. I’ll see you at home,’ Ryan replied and
walked towards the door.
‘See you at home,’ Seth repeated. ‘That sounds good,’ he
thought happily. ‘We both live there now.’

Samaire Armstrong (Anna):
I couldn’t believe it when I was

CHAPTER 1
Getting ready
It was early morning. I was lying awake in my sleeping
bag. My friend Simon was asleep beside me. We were in
a tent in the Cordillera Huayhuash, high in the Peruvian
Andes. We were about forty-five kilometres from the
nearest village.
I got up. Outside, it was getting lighter. It had snowed
in the night and the air was very cold. I walked to our
cooking area and passed Richard’s small tent on the way.
Richard was a traveller who we had met in Lima. We
both liked him. He told a lot of funny stories about all the
interesting places he had visited around the world. We
had asked him to join us and guard our things while we
were away climbing.
I lit the gas on the little cooker to make a hot drink. As
I waited for the water to heat, I looked at the mountains.
I thought about why Simon and I were here. We wanted
to climb the West Face of a mountain called Siula Grande.
Nobody had climbed it before. We wanted to be the first.
I felt sure we could do it. We had both climbed difficult
mountains in other parts of the world. We had sometimes
had problems, but we had never had any serious
accidents. However, as I looked at the mountains around
me I felt a little worried. I knew this climb would be
different. Siula Grande is 6344 metres high. It was much
higher than any mountain we had climbed before. Our
camp was at 4800 metres, which is as high as Mont Blanc
in the Alps. The high, thin air would make climbing very
tiring. Another danger was the weather. It could change
suddenly. Large clouds from the Amazon could bring
storms of snow, strong winds and terrible cold.
Climbing
Climbing
Everest
Reporter: Why climb Everest?
George Mallory: Because it’s there!!
In 1852, it was decided that Mount
Everest, in the Himalayas, was the
world’s highest mountain. And ever
since then, men and women have
wanted to climb it! Many try, a few are
successful and some lose their lives …
Mallory and Irvine
British climbers George
Mallory and Andrew
Irvine tried to reach the top of Everest in
1924. They had already tried twice. Sadly,
they disappeared. Nobody knows if they
ever reached the summit.
Hillary and Tenzing
In 1953, New Zealander
Edmund Hillary and
Sherpa Norgay Tenzing became
the first people to reach the
top of Everest. They had simple
equipment and no ropes. When they
reached the summit, Tenzing put sweets in
the snow for the gods. They stayed there
for only 15 minutes before going back
down. Hillary and Tenzing became famous
all over the world.
Many climbers and Sherpas have died here
– killed by falling ice.
After Camp IV (7900 m), climbers enter the
‘Death Zone’. They can’t stay here for more
than two to three days because of the
altitude. If the weather isn’t good enough
to continue, they have to go back down to
Base Camp.
It takes ten to twelve hours from Camp
IV to reach the summit. Climbers usually
spend less than 30 minutes at the summit
because they need to be back at Camp IV
before dark.
Who are the Sherpas?
The Sherpa people come
from the mountains in
Nepal, high up in the
Himalayas. Many Sherpas
helped the first climbers
who came to Everest.
They carried equipment
and worked as mountain
guides. Today, the word ‘sherpa’ is used for
any guide or helper in the Himalayas.

The way to the top
Everest is over 8000 m high. There are
five camps, including ‘Base Camp’, before
reaching the summit.
Later, during breakfast, I told Simon about my fears.
He laughed. That was the good thing about Simon. He
understood the danger, but it didn’t stop him. He was the
