WINTER 2014
Homecoming 2014 a Success,
Planning Begins for 2015
I would like to express my appreciation to each member of the
Tech Family who attended Homecoming 2014 at Arkansas Tech
University.
As you will sadly see in the “Friends We’ll
Miss” section of this magazine, we are
losing loyal alumni at an alarming rate.
From the Homecoming Golf Classic and Ladies Champagne Bingo
Luncheon to the Alumni and Friends Reception to Party at the
Plaza and everything in between, it was a weekend that lived up to
the idea of a “Forever Green and Gold” Homecoming.
One of the best ways we can remember them is to carry forward the
traditions of our university and share them with future generations.
Within a week of the conclusion of Homecoming 2014, those of
us in the Office of Alumni Relations started brainstorming about
Homecoming 2015. Constant improvement is at the core of any
successful organization, and we believe that to be true of the
Arkansas Tech Alumni Association.
In that spirit, I ask those of you who have attended Homecoming
over the years to share your thoughts about which events mean the
most to you and any additional events that you would like for us to
consider adding to the schedule in future years.
Homecoming symbolizes that idea more than any other event, but
it will only continue to thrive if we commit to make it so.
Send your Homecoming feedback via e-mail to [email protected],
call us at (479) 968-0242 or send traditional mail to Arkansas Tech
Alumni House, 1313 North Arkansas Ave., Russellville, AR 72801.
Thank you again for a great Homecoming 2014. We’ll hope to see
you at a basketball game or other campus event this winter. In the
meantime, Fight On, Arkansas Tech!
Sincerely,
If you have never or rarely attended Homecoming, we’d like to
know what we can do to make it a more attractive event for you.
This Alumni Association belongs to all of us, and Homecoming is
our signature event.

Class of 2018
Arkansas Tech University Becomes
Third-Largest University in the State
Arkansas Tech University reported a preliminary 11th day
enrollment of 12,003 students for the fall 2014 semester on Friday,
Sept. 12.
Enrollment at Arkansas Tech increased 5.6 percent over fall 2013.
With the increase, Arkansas Tech surpassed the University of
Arkansas at Little Rock and the University of Central Arkansas
to become the third-largest institution of higher learning in the
Natural State.
Only the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and Arkansas State
University have larger enrollments among Arkansas colleges and
universities.
“Today marks a significant milestone in the history of Arkansas
Tech University,” said Dr. Robin E. Bowen, who took office as the
12th president of Arkansas Tech on July 1. “The fact that in one
decade we have grown from the sixth-largest university in our state
to become one of the three largest is a testament to the quality of
our academic programs and our institutional commitment to serve
a diverse community of learners. This achievement is a point of
pride for each member of the Arkansas Tech family.”
Enrollment at Arkansas Tech has increased by 183 percent since
1997. This fall marks the 16th consecutive year that Arkansas Tech
has established a new institutional record for largest enrollment.
The growth in fall 2014 is bolstered by the largest freshman class in
Arkansas Tech history. There are 1,684 incoming freshmen on the
main campus of Arkansas Tech in Russellville this fall. The previous
08
WINTER 2014
Today's Tech
record for largest Arkansas Tech main campus freshman class was
1,572 students, which was established in fall 2011.
Much of the growth in freshman enrollment came from Pulaski
County and Benton County. The number of Arkansas Tech freshmen
from those two counties increased by 76.9 percent from fall 2013 to
fall 2014, going from a combined count of 143 freshmen one year
ago to 253 freshmen from Pulaski and Benton counties this fall.
Freshman enrollment at Arkansas Tech main campus for fall
2014 increased 17.5 percent over fall 2013, when 1,433 incoming
freshmen enrolled.
The Arkansas Tech Class of 2018 achieved a high school grade
point average of 3.24 and an average ACT score of 21.88. This fall
marks the 20th consecutive year that the Arkansas Tech freshman
class has beaten the national and state averages on the ACT exam.
Among the 1,684 freshmen at Arkansas Tech in Russellville, 844
(50.1 percent) are female and 840 (49.9 percent) are male.
When the first-time students from Arkansas Tech-Ozark Campus
are included in the count, there are 1,951 freshmen enrolled at
Arkansas Tech this fall.
The enrollment announcement by Arkansas Tech came on the
heels of the release of the “Almanac of Higher Education 2014”
by The Chronicle of Higher Education. The almanac reported that
Arkansas Tech is among the 10 fastest-growing master’s degreegranting universities in the United States for a second consecutive
year.

at Arkansas Tech increased by 87 percent from 2002-2012, making it
the fastest-growing university in Arkansas for that time frame.
Growth at Arkansas Tech has included many enrollment milestones
along the way. Arkansas Tech exceeded 5,000 students for the first
time in 2000; 6,000 students in 2003; 7,000 students in 2006; 8,000
students in 2009; 9,000 students in 2010; 10,000 students in 2011;
11,000 students in 2013; and now 12,000 students in 2014.
Other numbers of note from the fall 2014 enrollment at Arkansas
Tech:
• included in the overall enrollment number are 2,172 individuals
studying through Arkansas Tech-Ozark Campus, which has seen
its enrollment increase by 622 percent since joining Arkansas
Tech in 2003;
• there are 904 graduate students at Arkansas Tech in fall 2014,
the highest such count in institution history;
• 43.7 percent of Arkansas Tech freshmen this fall self-reported as
first-generation college students;
• students from minority groups represent 22.4 percent of the
Arkansas Tech student body, compared to 10 percent of the
student body in 2004;
• Arkansas Tech enrolled 450 international students representing
36 foreign countries for the fall 2014 semester;
• and among the 1,951 freshmen at Arkansas Tech, 1,831 (93.8
percent) are from the State of Arkansas.

Arkansas Tech University Earns
Right to Offer Doctoral Programs
HISTORIC MOMENT OPENS DOOR FOR
DOCTOR OF EDUCATION PROGRAM AT TECH
There is a new option in Arkansas for individuals who wish to
pursue higher education at the highest level.
Arkansas Tech University was granted a change in role and scope
by the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board on Friday,
July 25, a measure that will allow the institution to offer doctoral
programs for the first time.
“This is an historic moment in the life of Arkansas Tech University,”
said Dr. John W. Watson, vice president for academic affairs.
“The opportunity to offer doctoral programs is a milestone in
our continuing efforts to meet the educational needs of our
constituents. I offer my appreciation and congratulations to
Dr. Mary Gunter, dean of the Graduate College, and her faculty
colleagues for their hard work to make this possible.”
The decision by the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating
Board is the culmination of a series of related events that began
in July 2010, when the Arkansas Tech Board of Trustees approved
a letter of intent notifying the Arkansas Department of Higher
Education (ADHE) that the university was developing a Doctor of
Education program.
One month later, the board approved a letter of intent to ADHE
concerning the change in role and scope necessary to allow
Arkansas Tech to offer doctoral programs.

WINTER 2014
Today's Tech
In November 2010, the Arkansas Tech Board of Trustees approved
the program proposal that outlined the Doctor of Education
degree as developed by the faculty in the Arkansas Tech Center for
Leadership and Learning.
The years since have seen a site visit by an out-of-state review
team in March 2012 and program reviews by the Arkansas Higher
Education Coordinating Board, all of which led to the decision
in July to grant Arkansas Tech a change in role and scope and
permission to begin offering a Doctor of Education degree in
school leadership.
The program is designed for K-12 education professionals who
currently serve or wish to serve in school district leadership
positions.
The Arkansas Tech Doctor of Education degree in school leadership
will build upon the curriculum of the institution’s existing
Educational Specialist degree, which consists of 30 hours of course
work beyond the master’s degree level.
The first cohort of Doctor of Education degree in school leadership
students in Arkansas Tech history will begin its studies in summer
2015.

of Education degree in school leadership, call (479) 498-6022 or

Arkansas Tech University’s Class of 2018 wears gold during the inaugural freshman convocation at Tucker Coliseum (left) as Dr. Robin E. Bowen, president, speaks of
the class’s rare opportunity (right).
Arkansas Tech Formally Inducts Its
Class Of 2018 During Inaugural Convocation
Arkansas Tech University officially
inducted its Class of 2018 into the
Tech family on Tuesday, Aug. 26, during
the institution’s inaugural freshman
convocation at Tucker Coliseum.
Freshmen were inducted as Arkansas Tech
students by the deans of their respective
colleges.
Dr. Robin E. Bowen, president of Arkansas
Tech, began her remarks by sharing a brief
history of the university with the freshmen.
“Today, we inherit the 105-year tradition
of Arkansas Tech,” said Bowen, who took
office as the 12th president of Arkansas
Tech on July 1. “It is a tradition built upon
providing educational opportunity. It is a
tradition of professionalism and integrity.
Perhaps most of all, the story of Arkansas
Tech is about overcoming any and all
obstacles that stand between a student
and his or her academic goals.”
Bowen went on to speak of the rare
opportunity that the Arkansas Tech Class
of 2018 has received by noting that 17
percent of the world population cannot
read or write, 15 percent of the world
population is undernourished, 48 percent
of the world population lives on less than
$2 per day and less than 1 percent of
the world population has the chance to
graduate from a public university in the
United States.
“So yes, you have an incredible
opportunity, each and every one of you,”
said Bowen. “But with opportunity comes
responsibility. There are many issues that
plague our world. Among them, as noted
earlier, are hunger, poverty, illiteracy, and
we did not even begin to mention, war,
illness and disability. I could go on and on.
“We need you,” continued Bowen. “We
need your talents, your skills, your
creativity to address these issues. A
college education equips you to address
these issues. Find your passion, be it
creating a new technology that multiplies
food production to feed the hungry, or
educating children, or discovering the next
generation of energy source, whatever it
may be. Find that passion, your passion,
and make your mark. I challenge you
to take this opportunity to meet that
responsibility, the one you choose based
on your passion.”

Stamps Named to Arkansas Aviation Hall of Fame
Arkansas Tech University alumnus Jim
Stamps has earned one of the top honors
available to pilots in the United States of
America.
Stamps received the 2014 Wright
Brothers Master Pilot Award from the
U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. The
honor is reserved for commercial pilots
with 50 or more years of continuous
service without incident.
A native of the Pea Ridge community in rural Pope County, Stamps
learned how to fly an airplane and began his flight training at
Arkansas Tech. He graduated from Tech in 1947 and went on to a
career that has included more than 62 years and 49,000 flying hours.
Stamps was a pilot with Northwest Airlines for 37 of those years.
When he retired from Northwest as a captain, he did so ranked No. 1
in seniority among the airline’s pilots.
A 2004 inductee into the Arkansas Aviation Hall of Fame, Stamps
told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette River Valley and Ozark Edition
shortly after his induction that his career far surpassed his wildest
expectations.
“How would you think of a little kid from Pea Ridge, Ark., going to all
these places all over the world?” said Stamps. “You wouldn’t think
of it, would you? It means everything to me. You’ve got to consider
where I came from. I’ve had a life that no one else can even believe.
It’s been a great life for me.”

Ozark Allied Health Holds Groundbreaking
Arkansas Tech University-Ozark Campus broke ground on its
20,723-square foot allied health building on Thursday, Oct. 23.
The Arkansas Tech Board of Trustees previously approved the
funding during its May 15 meeting.
Once completed, the new allied health building will house
five of the campus’ allied health programs - paramedic, health
information technology, physical therapist assistant, practical
nursing and registered nursing.
The architect is Wes Burgess from Crafton Tull of Rogers with
the construction bid going to The Cone Group, Inc., of Little
Rock.
The multipurpose facility will be the campus’ first two-story
structure and will feature laboratory and technology expansion,
offices for faculty and support staff, a fitness center, student lounge
areas and a testing center. The building will also have three new
computer labs.
The Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved the
economic feasibility of bonds toward construction of the new allied
health building at Arkansas Tech-Ozark during its regular quarterly
meeting on July 25.
The building is scheduled to open for spring 2016 classes. The
new allied health building, as well as replacing the roof on
the Technology and Academic Support building, represents an
investment of $6 million toward campus improvements.
Arkansas Tech-Ozark offers health care options in health
information technology, physical therapist assistant,
cardiovascular technology, occupational therapy assistant,
medical assisting, nursing assistant, practical nursing,
registered nursing, emergency medical technician, paramedic
and human services.
Brown Building Construction Reaches Milestone
A new 66,900-square foot academic, student support and
administrative facility on the main campus of Arkansas Tech
University in Russellville is one step closer to completion.
Arkansas Tech hosted a topping out ceremony on Monday, Nov. 3, to
mark the placement of a beam at the highest point of the project.
Located near the intersection of West O Street and Coliseum Drive,
the $16 million facility will provide classroom and conference room
space for the university as well as office space for operating areas
such as admissions, registrar, student accounts, financial aid, payroll,
budget, human resources and the university’s federally-funded TRIO
programs - Upward Bound and Student Support Services.
Arkansas Tech students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends left their
mark on the project by signing the beam that was hoisted to the top
of the structure.
“When this facility opens, and for decades afterward, the members of
the Tech family who signed the beam representative of the topping
out will be able to feel a special connection with this building and
share that connection with their children, grandchildren and great
grandchildren,” said Dr. Robin E. Bowen, Arkansas Tech president.
The Arkansas Tech Board of Trustees voted on May 10, 2014, to name
the facility in honor of Dr. Robert Charles Brown, president emeritus
and distinguished professor of economics at Arkansas Tech, and his
wife, Jill Lestage Brown.

Renovations Bring New Life to Caraway Hall
SUMMER PROJECT YIELDS
SORORITY HOUSE LIVING
One of the most recognizable and historic
facilities at Arkansas Tech University is
now a hub for Greek life on campus.
Opened in March 1935, Caraway Hall has
been listed on the National Register of
Historic Places since 1992. It was named
in memory of Sen. Thaddeus Caraway. His
widow, Sen. Hattie Caraway, spoke at the
dedication of the building in October 1935.
Almost eight decades later, a $528,000
interior renovation has transformed
Caraway Hall into a sorority house for
all four National Panhellenic Conference
organizations at Tech — Alpha Sigma Tau,
Delta Zeta, Phi Mu and Zeta Tau Alpha.
The renovation was put on display during
a Homecoming 2014 open house on
Saturday, Nov. 1.
“I feel like Greek life definitely needed
something on our campus that was a
visual point for campus,” said Chloe Cox of
North Little Rock, president of Delta Zeta.
“Caraway Hall is a great place and has a
great location. It has increased people’s
perception of Greek life and it definitely
helped us during recruitment.”
Cox noted that the new lobby furniture
is her favorite feature of the renovated
Caraway Hall.
“Everybody was in love with it,” said Cox.
“On the first night of orientation, the new
girls were lined up wanting to move in.

and see each other in the stairways every
day, so it’s been a great opportunity to
meet the girls in the other organizations.
All four organizations met their
recruitment goals of admitting at least
28 new members for fall 2014, and the
number of bids extended by the National
Panhellenic Conference sororities on
campus has increased by 39 percent in the
last three years.
“Before, when we just joined, it was
difficult because we didn’t see each other
or talk that much except for our weekly
chapter meetings,” continued Asher. “Now,
all of our members come up and hang
out in Caraway, not just the girls who live
there. We have really bonded.”
“I love that I am with my sisters in
Caraway Hall,” said Katy Gatling of Wynne,
president of Phi Mu. “The meeting spaces
give both our on-campus and off-campus
members a place to hang out and be
together. It’s great to be able to just go
upstairs for our meetings.”
Asher said that the carpets and hardwood
floors are her favorite features in the
renovated Caraway Hall.
Gatling explained that the opportunity
to interact with members of the other
organizations has been an added benefit.
“You think that they are different because
they are in a different sorority than you,”
said Gatling, “but seeing them in that
environment instead of just seeing them
in class, you have the chance to see that
you are more similar than different.”
Autumn Asher of Greenwood, president of
Alpha Sigma Tau, said that aspect of the
Caraway Hall project has been especially
helpful for her organization, which is in its
second year returning to the Arkansas Tech
campus after a three-decade hiatus.
“A lot of us really didn’t know very many
of the girls in the other sororities,” said
Asher. “Now we all share a laundry room
“I think the main thing Greek life does is
show that students can come together
for a common purpose,” said Asher. “The
main focus of Greek life is philanthropy.
Everyone is different and fits in with
different organizations, but we all come
together to help the community.”
Bailey Egger of Bentonville, president of
Zeta Tau Alpha, said that Caraway Hall
already feels like home.
“It’s one big sleepover all the time,” said
Egger. “There are 25 of us living there, and
we are always together. I didn’t think it was
going to be nearly this good. It blew my
mind the first time we walked in there. Our
floors are beyond anything that I would
ever imagine in a dorm room.
“There’s officially a place for everyone to
come and spend time,” continued Egger.
“Having a place that we can all call our
own has already helped.”
Tech Building Long-Term Relationship with Tsunami Victims
“Going over there made me
realize why I wanted to study
the language in the first place,”
said Boehm. “If I hadn’t gone to
Arkansas Tech, I would have never
received this opportunity to go
to Japan. I believe that if you are
given an opportunity to go to a
foreign country, you should never
ever pass that chance up. For the
college to be able to offer such a
chance is an amazing thing.”
There are approximately 6,200
miles between the main campus
of Arkansas Tech University in
Russellville and the region of
Japan that was devastated by the
tsunami of March 2011.
Read the words of Futoshi Toba,
mayor of the city of Rikuzentakata,
Japan, and it becomes clear
that a pair of English language
camps that faculty, staff and
students from Arkansas Tech have
performed in his grief-stricken
land over the past two Augusts
have made the two places feel much closer
together.
“With the massive loss of life, property
and infrastructure, we rely on moments of
hope and happiness for sustenance and
strength,” wrote Mayor Toba in a letter
to Arkansas Tech President Dr. Robin E.
Bowen on Sept. 8. “Your professors and
students offered us this gift and much
more. For that, you have my personal
thanks as well as the thanks of the
children who attended and their parents
and grandparents who welcomed them
home every day. The children arrived
home full of stories and new words and
laughter. This kind of assistance cannot be
measured, but please know it is precisely
this kind of support we need the most at
this time.”
Dr. John W. Watson, vice president for
academic affairs at Arkansas Tech, was
a part of the English language camp
goodwill missions to Ofunato, Japan, in
2013, and Rikuzentakata, Japan, in 2014.
“I’ve tried to think of a comparison,” said
Watson. “Suppose a massive tornado
system wiped out Russellville and we
all had to move into temporary housing
north of Dover. It’s been three years, and
we’re told we still cannot rebuild and it
will probably be another five years. That
is what the people in these Japanese
communities are facing. Every family in
those towns lost at least one member.
“To a person, every Arkansas Tech
representative who has worked the
English language camps has said it was
a life-changing experience,” continued
Watson. “We go to try to cheer them up
and help them forget about their losses…
to play and laugh. But it changes us too.
It provides a greater appreciation for what
we have here.”
Watson hopes that the growing
relationship between Arkansas Tech and
the Japanese communities served by the
English language camps will lead to more
cultural exchanges in the future.
He and Yasu Onodera, director of the
International and Multicultural Student
Services Office at Arkansas Tech, have
developed partnerships with educational
entities in the region that could lead to
children of Ofunato, Rikuzentakata and the
surrounding area growing up to become
Arkansas Tech students.
Additional partnerships have been
strengthened as part of an institutional
commitment by Arkansas Tech to provide
more study abroad opportunities for its
students.
Six Arkansas Tech students were part of
the delegation for the English language
camp in Rikuzentakata in August 2014.
Among them was Taylor Boehm, a
broadcast journalism major from Paris.
For Boehm, the chance to be a part of
the English language camp team was the
fulfillment of a goal to visit Japan that she
first developed in the first grade.
Boehm recalls the eagerness to
learn displayed by the Japanese
children.
“My favorite memory was working with
the children,” said Boehm. “Even though I
was extremely excited to be able to teach
those kids English and they were able to
learn the material quickly and happily,
I don’t think the actual class was my
favorite part. Even during lunch time the
kids would grab us and ask us to play with
them. I had a couple of students come
to me asking what this or that means in
English. They wanted to learn even during
their lunch break.”
An added step in building the relationship
came in advance of the 2014 holiday
season when the Arkansas Tech Office of
Academic Affairs hosted a toy drive for the
children of Ofunato and Rikuzentakata.
Watson knew one child that would
definitely be receiving a gift from him.
“I lost about four pounds during our most
recent visit to Japan,” said Watson, “and I
attribute most of it to this one little boy.
He is probably 5 or 6 years old, and he
loved to play keep away with this ball that
he had. He had me chasing him all around
that gym.
“These are kids just like our kids,”
continued Watson. “I’ve become pretty
attached to the people of that region. I’ve
never experienced hospitality like theirs.
They have become like family to me. I can’t
imagine the thought of not going back to
see them. Even after I retire, I will still go
back.”

Thankful for Alumni, Friends
Who Invest in Tech’s Mission
A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of meeting the first two
recipients of a new scholarship being endowed through the
Arkansas Tech University Foundation. Both are seniors, and
both expressed to me how grateful they are to have received this
financial assistance made possible by a donor. Another student
refers to the Foundation scholarship she receives as “a blessing.”
She knows that without this private support, her ability to
complete her education would be more stressful financially. She
also already knows the importance of giving back to this university
for the benefit of our students. A key point is that although these
scholarships are not full tuition, they are a vital source of support
that enables these students to persist to graduation.
One of our faculty members summed it up best recently when he
stated that although he is not able to give a large amount each
year, he knows that every little bit that can be given helps. “If I give
a little bit and everybody else gives a little bit, that is substantial.”
He knows private giving is a component of the funding that Tech
relies on to accomplish our goals for helping our students.
We gratefully present the 2013-2014 Donor Roll in the next few
pages, and on behalf of our students, faculty and staff, say thank
2013-14 Roll of Donors
you to these alumni and friends
who are invested in the mission
of Arkansas Tech University. Their
gifts of all sizes fund scholarships
like the ones mentioned above and
over 200 others; provide supplemental resources for our academic
departments and athletics; and enrich students’ educational
experience by enabling them to attend academic-related meetings
and competitions.
Reserve your spot on next year’s donor roll by making your gift
payable to the Arkansas Tech University Foundation today. It’s easy
to make a difference in the life of a student. One simple way is to
go online: www.atu.edu/givetotech.
Sincerely,
Jayne Jones
Vice President for Development
July 1, 2013- June 30, 2014
HERITAGE SOCIETY:
Contact: Dana Moseley, Director of Gift Planning, (479) 964-0532 or [email protected]
The Heritage Society acknowledges our alumni and friends who have made provisions in their estate plans for gifts to be made to the
Arkansas Tech University Foundation. These gifts take many forms: simple bequests by will, gifts of life insurance, or life income gifts such
as annuities and charitable trusts. Many of these planned gifts offer financial and tax saving benefits to the donor and ensure continued
support for future generations at Tech.

TECH LOYALTY SOCIETY:
The Tech Loyalty Society was formed to recognize Tech’s alumni, friends, and faculty/staff who have shown their commitment by making
gifts of all sizes consistently through the Arkansas Tech University Foundation for 10 or more years. The Tech Loyalty Society members listed
below have made Tech students a priority in their charitable giving, and we are appreciative of them. To our Pacesetters - those who make
their first gift prior to graduation - we point to these loyal supporters as role models of paying it forward.

Employer Matching Programs
Can Double or Triple Your Impact
Many employers have programs
to match their employees’
donations to higher education.
These matching gifts provide
important funding for Arkansas
Tech and are an easy way for
you to increase the financial
impact of your contribution.
Some companies match
gifts made by their retired
employees, members of their
board of directors, employee
spouses, and widows/widowers
of former employees.
It’s easy to find out whether
your employer has a matching
gift program. Simply check
with your Human Resources
Office or go online at www.
matchinggifts.com/atu to search
for your employer’s guidelines
and form. When you send us
your gift, simply include the
completed form and we’ll take
care of submitting it to the
company.
Please note that matching gifts
will be directed to support
the same area at Tech as your
personal gift unless your
company’s policy specifies
otherwise. Company matching
gift policies vary, so consult
your company’s policy for
additional details.
