MODEL EXPO 2013 ENTRANTS COMPLIMENTARY COMPETITION RESULTS MODEL EXPO 2013 M O D E L E X P O 2 0 1 3 A U STRA L IA N O P E N P L ASTIC & SCA L E M O D E L C H A M P I O N S H I P S ed i t o r i a l Directors Message Dear Model Expo competition entrant and fellow modeller, Thank you for making Model Expo 2013 such a wonderful success. This year’s event attracted a good number of entries and more visitors than at any time throughout it’s 30 year history. Model Expo is a joint initiative of model clubs across Australia. It provides a unique opportunity for modellers and enthusiasts of all interests and skill levels to share their ideas, knowledge and enjoyment of plastic and scale modelling. The Australian Open Plastic and Scale Modelling Championships provide a wonderful spectacle for the wider community to learn more about the art of modelling and how they can participate in this most interesting hobby. Model Expo 2014 is fast approaching and should be the events biggest and brightest yet. Following on from the success of this year, Model Expo 2013 will benefit greatly from increased participation of clubs, the model industry and sponsors. The vision: To promote the art of plastic and scale modelling The mission: Model Expo’s mission is to create a greater awareness among the wider and modelling community of the benefits and opportunities provided by plastic and scale modelling. through a major national event that: • provides a greater recognition of the opportunities (professional and recreational) provided by plastic and scale modelling • provides a competition for the widest variety of plastic and scale model categories • provides recognition of the skills and talents of individual modellers and clubs by the modelling and wider community • Provides the opportunity for plastic and scale modelling to be recognised as part of the wider arts community, and • provides the opportunity for participation and enjoyment by model club members, individuals and visitors Model Expo 2014 will be held at the Sandown Exhibition Centre, June 7-9, so bring your friends and join us in making Model Expo 2014 a great success for modellers, clubs, sponsors and visitors alike. Model Expo organising committee T Australian Model Expo celebrated its 30th Anniversary in 2013 and it’s hard to believe that from its humble beginnings way back in 1983 that it has now grown into the premier three day event of its kind anywhere in the country. This is a significant achievement and all those who have been involved in its organisation over the years, should be very proud of their contribution and for making it possible for the event to reach this important milestone. Although the event didn’t set any new records in 2013, there were still some 600 models entered into the 63 competition categories from 200 competitors, with many travelling from far and wide to attend. Attendance by modellers and the public also remained steady and family groups were very much in evidence over the entire 3 days, clearly demonstrating that the event continues to remain popular which will ensure its continued success for many years to come. The demand for trade space was also high, with the available space being completely booked out 3 weeks after calling for expressions of interest, something that has never occurred before in the history of the event. As usual the traders ensured there were plenty of goodies on offer at discounted prices, which resulted they all did a brisk trade over the entire 3 days. The large number of club and individual displays were again a popular feature of the event with two groups – displaying a range of radio controlled trucks and tanks – being first time attendees. A number of clubs had also gone to considerable lengths to present a themed display, he in the hope of improving their chances to secure the much coveted, ‘Best Club Display’ award, which is chosen by the public. This year’s award went to the Whittlesea Area Plastic Modellers for their excellent display ‘Set the Scene’, which attracted a lot of interest and attention. As already mentioned the competition was well supported this year with entries in every category with the real stand-outs for the largest number of entries being the Figures, Trucks and the Junior categories. If the latter continues to grow in the manner that it has over the last few years, then this bodes well for the continued future of our hobby. The stand-out entries in this years competition were Ernie Hastas magnificent 1/25 scale Mack truck, ‘1988 Captain Bligh Superliner II’, which won 1st in the Trucks and Commercial Vehicles – Over 3 Tonne category as well as the ‘Best of Show’ award, and Ian Hill’s amazing U-boat diorama titled ‘The Last Patrol’, which placed 2nd in the Single Military Model Diorama category and also picked up the ‘WOW Factor’ and ‘People’s Choice’ awards. There was also a significant number ‘Best of’ brand awards this year, thanks to some very generous sponsors, which were all awarded to some very worthy recipients. Planning is now well underway for the 2014 Australian Model Expo, which will be held over the Queens Birthday long-weekend in June (7th9th June 2014) and provide both the public and modellers alike, with a great showcase of modelling interests. Model Expo 2014 is a showcase of everything that encompasses plastic modelling. A national open plastic model competition is conducted during the Expo and covers all categories including aircraft, military models, cars, trucks and sci-fi. Junior and intermediate modellers are also catered for.
