October 2008 - Lake Run Club
October 2008 • Volume 23 • Issue 9 www.lakerunclub.org Centennial Relay Now Part of History by Rich Beal September 8, 1908: At 7:04:55am, Decatur mayor E.S. McDonald handed a baton including a letter for Bloomington mayor Holland to the first of thirty-five Decatur runners. The baton was relayed to the first Bloomington team runner on the northern edge of Clinton, Illinois. Each team of thirty-five runners covered a distance of 23.5 miles. In 1908, the Decatur team ran a 2:04:51 averaging 5:30 per mile. They beat Bloomington by 10 minutes. The total relay time was 4:19:16. The purpose of the 1908 race was, aside from the “friendly competition,” to highlight the role of the YMCA in Bloomington and Decatur. September 7, 2008: History did not repeat itself when this race was recreated this year. The Bloomington-Normal team did, again, place second, but this time it was by 20 minutes. The B/N team, consisting of many Lake Run Club members, completed the course in 2:41:55. The Decatur team completed its half of the race in 2:22:13. The total race time was 5:04:08. “They spanked us!” according to Kirby Cheek who had the honor of running the 35th position on the Bloomington-Normal team. Kirby, wearing a white & green singlet marketing the Lake Run Club, was understandably short of breath, having sprinted up the Center Street hill following a “water stop” at Lucca Grill during his half-mile leg… Kirby handed the baton to Decatur event organizer, Angelo Rinchiuso – a history teacher, cross country coach, runner, and president of the Decatur Running Club. Angelo presented the baton to Bloomington mayor Steve Stockton. A struggle ensued in an attempt to remove the letter from the Decatur mayor which had been inserted in the race baton. Thanks to the help of LRC member Matt King, who provided his car keys for the baton surgery, the letter was successfully removed. In the letter, Mayor Michael T. Carrigan shared with Mayor Stockton that, “This historic Continued on page 5 Left: Decatur team organizer Angelo Runchiuso (right) joins Bloomington team organizer Rich Beal during a leg of the relay. The Lake Runner • October 2008 Profile on Page 3 Donna Creditor by Jana Kiefer & Phil “Geno” Warlow Donna Creditor kicked her smoking habit about 20 years ago after realizing she couldn’t climb a flight of stairs without gasping for breath. Getting fit and losing weight were two bonuses that came along with her new habit – running. She joined the Lake Run Club to meet other like-minded people. And look what happened! J & G: Who have you been running with lately? Donna: A golden retriever named Sophie who doesn’t share my love for running. Also you (the J part of the J & G Team), Jeff Simpson, Steve Barr, John Kastigar, and the marathon training group. J & G Team: Donna, tell us about your first race. Donna: It was the Christi Clinic 10K in Champaign. Great race; Captain Kangaroo was even there one year. J & G: That would be memorable. What other race really sticks in your mind? Donna: McNaughton (50-100-150 Mile Ultra) is one of my favorites. I logged a DNF (Did Not Finish) once, and I finished once; and now I’m going back for more… in more ways than one. J & G: Good luck with that! We hear there’s a 100 in your future! Do you have a favorite route that you run? Donna: I like the trails; nature is so calming. J & G: If you could run any race in the world, which would you pick, and why? Donna: The Western States 100, because Merlin Anderson said he would help pace me (remember that, Merlin?), and it’s the Boston of the 100’s. J & G: We’ll be there as your support team, Donna!! If Chilly Chili isn’t the most unusual race you’ve ever taken part in, what is? Donna: I think it’s the most unusual I have taken part in. Although I have heard of a race where you run with scissors, and along the course you have to cut things out of various books to prove you were there. That sounds fun. J & G: We’ve heard that occasionally Rich Beal runs with scissors. Do you know who Rich is and have you ever had a sighting? Donna: I do, I have, and therapy is helping, thanks. J & G: Are you training for something big right now? Donna: Can’t say, sorry. It’s scary. J & G: (It’s not Chilly Chili, is it?) What’s the coolest piece of running gear you own? Donna: That’s why I like running – the simplicity of it. All you need is a decent pair of shoes. Donna at the Decatur to Bloomington Relay (photo courtesy of Jen Ho) J & G: Is there someone or something you find motivating? Donna: I’ve been thinking about this one… What comes to mind is seeing things like a woman in a wheelchair at mile 25 in a marathon who was cheering me on and she didn’t have any legs. I stopped my whining after that. J & G: What makes you stay with it and keep running? Donna: I feel right with the world after a good run. Couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Thanks for being part of the J & G Team profile hit list. We thoroughly enjoyed talking with you and can’t wait to read about you hitting your first 100 miler! It was exciting on this cool, crisp Sunday morning to drive up and down Illinois State Route 51 to see LRC members faithfully positioned to accept the baton. Runners Donna Creditor and Steve Barr narrowly avoided prison time when they explained they were waiting “to make their exchange” to a state patrolman asking why they were sitting on the side of the road in Wapella so early on Sunday morning! Chery and Bob Lambert and Paul Gorden provided motivation to runners as they drove back & forth on Route 51 honking and yelling “wahoo” to all runners. When asked why he only ran a 6:00 split for his mile, Merlin Anderson said he held back a little because he had run 13 miles on Saturday. Many members of the BloomingtonNormal team completed their long runs for their 2008 marathon training the day before the race. Besides that, the team known for its Boston Marathon finisher, Tom Crain, had to run in snow and up numerous hills! Some were “shoeless”, one runner helped change a tire for a stranded motorist, and tri-athlete Seanan AlYasiri did a swim workout in the Heyworth pond. Despite these challenges, the team was still able to place second in the Centennial Relay! Clockwise from top: Bob & Chery Lambert and Paul Gorden. Bloomington and Decatur teams gather for post race photos and party. Seanan AlYasiri taking off after handoff from John Kastigar. But training does pay off. The many hours of practicing our baton handoffs late into the night throughout the summer was worth it. The Bloomington-Normal runners had excellent exchanges with no one dropping the baton! 10/26 Wilmington Foundation 5K Wilmington, IL 9:00am Wilmington HS Diane J 815-476-2736 www.wilmington.will.k12.il.us/foundation.htm Lisa Sparks handing off to Merlin Anderson. But, in keeping with the idiocy that sometimes occurs in the Lake Run Club, some of the great minds that previously coordinated this event decided we would “raise the dead,” so to speak, and once again coordinate a “Race the Dead” event. Ok, I’m interested. What is “Race the Dead”? Well, it isn’t exactly a race, although participants do run around a course and there are awards. It isn’t exactly a party, but everyone is encouraged to dress up and to have a good time. (You are not required to dress up, but you are required to have a good time…) And if you register early, you are assured of a great T-shirt that you will be proud to hang in your closet and admire every night with the lights off. (huh?) So, how did this get started? One Thursday night in 1999, a group of us running at Lake Bloomington met in Green Gables to recover from the exercise. Feeling light-headed, and after hearing 5 or 6 songs in a row by dead singers on the Juke box (editor’s note: according to Pat Dunagan, the artists probably weren’t dead when they recorded their songs, nor were they actually “on” the Juke box, although “Dead Singers on a Juke Box” does sound like a good name for a band…), we started joking that it would be fun to have a race where you would dress as your favorite dead singer. The more beer consumed, the funnier it seemed and somehow (and just before we were asked to leave) the idea morphed into Race the Dead. Halloween, or as close to it as possible, seemed like the perfect time. We had so much fun with this event, that we did it again the next year, and the year after, and the year after that… before letting the idea “drop dead.” Lots of fun, lots of effort. But now, the Race the Dead beast is back! Why is it held in rural Towanda? Lots of really cool reasons. First, “Towanda” is a Native American word meaning “place to bury your Dead”. (Sooo cool) The course is on Old Route 66 – a famous, but now Dead, highway. (Neat) Plus, the course runs right by a cemetery, which is… full of Dead people. (Spooky) The race starts at Sundown? Won’t it be dark? Almost certainly, but hey, it IS Halloween. Bring a flashlight or headlamp and run or walk with some care. The traditional luminaries along the course are back, so you won’t get too lost… maybe. It used to be 3.9 miles and now it’s a 5K. What happened? We like to tempt fate and we kind of like the number 13. The 3.9 mile distance was 13 times three, divided by 10. And it allowed the event to run sorta close to the Towanda Community Building, where the event used to finish. The 5K distance is 3.1 miles, which is kinda like the number 13 reversed, and lets the race finish near Kick’s Bar and Grill, where the event happens now. And if that whole explanation sounds too dumb or lame, this probably isn’t the event for you… So this whole “13 thing” is why the entry fee is $13.13? You got it! And if you’re an LRC member, you get a great 13 cent discount! I don’t want to run in the dark. Can I still participate or help? You betcha!!!! Contact Kent at (309) 825-9039 or [email protected] or Kirby at (309) 378-3401 or [email protected]. We’ll probably have something cool and creepy for you to do. Any other suggestions? Absolutely! Just grab a few friends and REGISTER EARLY. This is a really cheap event. To keep costs down, we don’t want any shirts left over. So there will be VERY VERY few shirts left by race day. Early registration assures you of a great Race the Dead long-sleeve T-shirt. AM!! by Deb McNamara and Connie Reeser-Hall During the dog days of summer, running in the early morning coolness is so much more enjoyable than sweating thru an afterwork 90-degree-plus run. Since we switched to running early at Tipton Park this year, we have discovered some additional advantages to running in the early morning hours… • • • • • • • • • • A bad case of bed head today? Who can tell? It’s now dark out when we start. And when the sun finally does come up it blinds everyone with its brilliance - so they still can’t see your hair. When we can’t read our watches in the dark, we have no idea how fast our pace is… or isn’t… If a running partner says something stupid, you can always blame it on “They just haven’t turned on their brain yet.” Your outfit doesn’t have to be color-coordinated, or even match your hair scrunchy, since nobody can see how you look. By the time you wake up, your run is half over! If you are grouchy and got up on the wrong side of the bed, everybody blames it on the lack of caffeine in your system. Your running partners show up with interesting “paraphernalia” – like a hat lamp that has the potential for landing airplanes over at the airport. The faster early morning runners knock down all the overnight cobwebs for us slower but smarter runners. You can wear two different shoes & nobody notices or cares. You can make a running partner wear the ‘infamous L-R: Pam Walden, Wendy Nafziger, Vicki King, Sandy Vail, Deb McNamara and Connie Reeser-Hall (photo courtesy of Bob King) • • • • • • birthday hat’ and she will do it since there’s nobody else around to see her in it. You have all the world’s problems solved by 6:30am, although business problems and family issues take a little longer. You get to see an abundance of wildlife either on the trail or while driving there – like frogs, geese, foxes and deer. There is a lot less road / bike / pedestrian traffic to worry about on the trail. When you come up over the last rise at Tipton Park, heading east – Four Seasons II shines like a welcoming beacon. Or is that the sun? No matter, we’re heading downhill towards the “finish line!” You really deserve a great breakfast when you run in the morning! And, kicking up the metabolism that early leads to a really good lunch too! And, of course, you now have more time at night to do other fun things – like laundry, grocery shopping, cooking dinner (huh?), and even signing up for more exercise classes… Unfortunately, there are some disadvantages to running that early… • • • Your car smells more like a laundry room since your sweaty running clothes “ferment” in your hot, parked car all day. The neighborhood automatic lawn sprinklers sometimes catch you unawares… Little gnat bugs fly into your eyes since you’re not wearing sunglasses. • The grass is dewy and slick when you try to “cut the corner” where the neighborhood street meets up with the trail. • But if you don’t “cut the corner”, you risk taking a tumble if you miss the curb cut in the dark… • The little frogs at Tipton Park always seem to be in the middle of the trail. • No “zoning out” on your drive in from the country, since deer have a tendency to be grazing next to the road… right before they bound in front of your car. • If you decide to sleep in, your running partners call you anyway and give you grief forever. • You only saw part of the Summer Olympics – since you were asleep by 8:30pm. Many people think it’s quite an accomplishment when you tell them you ran 4 or 5 miles; but when you tell them you ran 4 or 5 miles by 6:30am they are really impressed with your motivation, dedication, perseverance, and commitment. Yeah, ok, so some of them think we should be committed, but so what?? We’re happy, we’re glad to be out there, and maybe some day we’ll see YOU out there also! A total of 33 participants enjoyed the cool, sunny Sunday morning, the gentle breeze, and kisses blown by our guest of honor, 2-year-old Will Raycraft. ABC Run #38 was hosted by Megan Leopold as a benefit to help pay medical bills for young Will, who has already undergone several heart surgeries and has at least one more to endure. After I explained the course, Megan introduced Will’s parents, Rob and Andrea Raycraft, so they could express their appreciation. A couple of photos later, we were off on our adventure. The road course was marked every half-mile, but eight of us left the accuracy of the road for the unknown distances and hills of the trails. In addition to a fine day, a fine total of $552 was raised to help the Raycraft family. To settle the traditional trash talk between the bikers and runners, the total breaks down to $442 from the runners and $110 from the bikers. It’s sure good to have the bikers help us make the ABC runs even more successful. Thank you, Phil Warlow, for starting this little rivalry and frequently talking a few other bikers into joining us. Six of the 33 participants were attending their first ABC Run: Cameron Dougall, Adam Ebreo, Michelle Gruener, and the three Raycrafts. Welcome, and come back often! A special feature of ABC Run #38 was our first ever BAKE-OFF, with young Will Raycraft as the “official judge.” Will had a tough choice: Meg Anderson’s coffee cake – the tradition of the ABC runs, Jessica Gieson’s fruity crispy bars, Mary Kastigar’s sunrise muffins, and Megan Leopold’s banana muffins. And the winner is: Mary Kastigar’s sunrise muffins! Thanks, everyone for all the food and for all your support. To Katie Altrichter and Cameron Dougall: the watermelon was a really good touch, thank you! And thanks also to Mark Wilkins and the DoubleTree for the cookies – even though they were not eligible for the bake-off award, as they were not “homemade”.
