Secretary/Treasurer LETTERS From the President Dear Members: This year is moving along very fast and I know all of the auctioneers are busy this time of year. I would like to take time to visit some of the member’s auctions, but I also have been very busy. I am making plans to attend the International Auctioneers Conference and Show in Orlando, Florida from July 10-15 and am looking forward to seeing a lot of AAM members there. At our last Membership meeting, Roxane Casto announced she would be stepping down from Editor for the newsletter. Roxane Casto and Lynne Zink have worked very hard to bring the Association a great newsletter. Roxane Casto has put a lot of heart into the Editor’s page. She has traveled to auctions throughout Maryland and started the “Out & About” column. I want to take this time to thank Roxane Casto and Lynne Zink for the hard work and time they put into the newsletter. We are looking for someone that would like to work with Lynne Zink on the newsletter. If you know someone or you would like to be an Editor for the newsletter, give the President a call @ 301-491-3343 or call Gladys Ridge @ 301-898-9899. Jay Ruby is working very hard on the Make-A-Wish and Bid Calling Contest, and he is working to make this the largest auction for the Association, but he needs your help. Denny Stouffer and Bobby Campbell are working very hard on updating the Constitution & By-Laws. I would like to hear from the members if you have any input for the Association this year. Do not forget, this is your Association, and you will only receive what you put into it. Wish you all well and have a great year. Clair L Martin, President AAM P.S. See you all at the next quarterly meeting on June 7, 2006 at Timbuktu. 3 From the President Elect Dear Members, I am sure by now you are very busy with late spring and early summer auctions. It is not too late though, to make plans to attend the 57th International Auctioneer’s Conference and Show July 10th thru July 15th, 2006 in Orlando, Florida. This is a great opportunity to meet with your fellow auctioneers from all over the country and to get updated information with many auction seminars. This is also a wonderful opportunity to bring the family for an exciting vacation. If you are not yet a member of the National Auctioneers Association I highly recommend checking into becoming a part of the association to take advantage of the many benefits NAA has to offer. Visit the NAA website at www.Auctioneers.org. Speaking of members, we all have a duty and an obligation to make all members feel like a part of our honorable association. I feel that over the past 5 years we have made great strides, but I also feel that there is still plenty of work to be done. As an auctioneer in the association I’ve come to realize that our only strength is through its members. Each and every member is very important to the entire group. I would ask you to encourage those auctioneers who are not members to explore ideas and become a part of our group thus making our association a stronger one. Thank you and I hope you can make it to Orlando. Sincerely, Paul Metzger Hall of Fame 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2005 Robert H. Campbell James G. Trout A.J. Those of you who have attended in the past know what an experience it is and how being there will help you grow your business and increase your bottom line. Many excellent speakers are scheduled and offer you high caliber knowledge and ideas that you may not have thought of before. I have also developed many friends from all over the Nation from attending this event. It’s a good time to renew friendships, share tales (war stories) and pick-up a golden nugget or two along the way; if you know what I mean. Hope you can make it, you’ll be glad you did. 2006 AAM Committees Bid Calling Championship . . . . . . . . . . . .Jay Ruby . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Lynne Zink Charity Effort . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .George Hunt . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Roy Gregory Ethics & Grievance . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Jay Edwards . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Jack Billig Internet & Technology . . . . . . . . . . . . .Lynne Zink Media Relations . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Clair Martin Membership . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Ira Drury . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Virginia Drury . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Dale Martin NAA Liaison/Education . . . . . . . . .Glenn Freeman . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Denny Stouffer Newsletter Editor/Reporter . . . . . . . .Roxane Casto . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Lynne Zink Nominating Committee . . . . . . . . . .Tom Weschler . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Ira Drury . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .George Hunt Political Affairs . . . . . . . . . .Robert H. As you know by now our good friend and fellow Auctioneer, Donnie Hockman, of Martinsburg, WV, passed away after a hard fought battle with cancer. He will really be missed by all. Donnie was always up beat and positive even when going through his treatments. Donnie was also ready and willing to help any fellow Auctioneer at any time. That’s just the kind of man he was. Please keep Donnie’s wife Theresa and their three children in your prayers, THANKS! That’s it for now, see you at the membership meeting, “Gavel Down” Denny Stouffer, CAI, AARE, GPPA, CES AAM 2006 Fundraising Event The date for the annual AAM Fundraising Event has been scheduled for Sunday, October 22, 2006 at 10:00am (preview 9:00am) and will be held at Jim Cochran’s Auction Facility in Boonsboro, Maryland. As soon as the consignment details are available, we will post it on the AAM Website and will also send out an email blast. Flyers will also be distributed at the September AAM Meeting. Let’s make this a record breaking year. LETTERS From the Board of Directors Is everything as good as it seems? Interest rates are going up, real estate is down. Are you ready for a busy season? It looks like spring has sprung and business is in full bloom. I recently returned from my first year at CAI and for those of you who haven’t attended, I highly recommend signing up. Invest in yourself! It was a great opportunity to learn and to meet new people who share the same respect for the auction business. It’s time to mark your calendars. The bid calling competition will be held on October 22nd at the Cochran Auction Complex in Boonsboro, Maryland. Contestant forms will soon be available on the website, as well as information regarding consignments. The 2007 Winter Conference will be held on January 11th through the 14th at the Hyatt in Cambridge, Maryland. There will be a host of great speakers. See you at the next meeting. We have made it through another fall, winter & most of spring. The robins are fat, the dogwoods have graced us with their blossoms, and the on site auction business has taken off again. We may see some decrease in attendance due to the gas prices, but I believe if the auction has goods someone is interested in, they will get there. It is just, “Build it and they will come”. Congratulations to Bill Fox and Go Industry for joining the London Stock Exchange. Bill, we are very proud of you and your accomplishments. Also, BIG Congratulations to Col. Ross Rhodes on celebrating his 80th birthday. Ross, we only hope we are as energetic as you when we are half your age. Thanks to everyone who has sent their membership dues to the office. We have eight members who did not renew. We are always sorry to lose a member. However, we currently have four potential members in the pipeline. They are: Denise K. Shearin, 15901 Bald Eagle School Rd., Brandywine, MD 20613; James Goins, 3804 Prospect Rd., Street, MD 21154; Nick Goins, 1405 Pomeroy Ave., Abingdon, MD 21009; W. Scott Wachter, 4201 Sundown Rd., Laytonsville, MD 20882 q When you see them, welcome them into the Association. It is with regret that we announce that Donnie Hockman, a West Virginia auctioneer, has lost his long and valiant fight against the cancer that was attacking him. If you attend our conferences, you may remember that Donnie spoke to us about selling real estate at auction. q 2000 Paul Sobwick 2001 Larry Makowski, CAI 2002 Mike Catrino 2003 Derek Hopkins 2004 Sheri Odom 5 If I may, I’d like to remind all members that we need to make everyone feel welcome in the Association. In honor of his main trade, that of a plumber and electrician, there was a very creative “Tools of the Trade” display and attendees placed their cards in the commode. One attendee who had brought a bouquet of roses for the Colonel added some class by placing the roses in the seat. It was a memorable time for all who attended. Following is Col. Ross Rhodes’ response: Col. Ross Rhodes thanking everyone for attending his birthday party. Dear members of the Maryland Auctioneer’s Association, I would like to thank the ones who attended my 80th birthday party and those who mailed me cards. I hope to be at the September meeting at Harris’ Crab House. Thanks, Col. Clients have come to the understanding that it is well worth the expense to hire a professional auctioneer to help coordinate an event. Then there are the causes that pull at our heartstring: 4-H, local community organizations, local families who have experienced hardship, and more. We’d love to make monetary donations, but our professional, auctioneering experience would exceed any donation we could ever afford to make. These types of causes offer us the opportunity to give back. I have provided many professional auctioneering and consultation services for a fee, but there are a few organizations that mean a lot to me on a personal level. This is my opportunity to give back with time instead of money and help them achieve success. Derek Hopkins’ Crab Feast Many AAM members give back in a variety of ways. As you’ve seen previewed in other AAM Newsletters, auctioneers have donated other specialty services to help raise money for the association and for Make-A-Wish and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. At many AAM events, auctioneers have offered BBQ’s, crab feasts, and brought misc. items to sell. Many newspapers have even donated advertising space such as Antique Week and The Daily Record. Highlighted here and on page 10 are ways that AAM members have been giving back to their communities. If you have a story you wish to share in a future AAM Newsletter, please email your story and pictures to Lynne Zink at [email protected]. ELECTIONS IN DECEMBER! Recently, Jim Cochran, CEO of Cochran Auctioneers, donated two new signs for the entrances of the Boonsboro School Complex. Jim was a 1972 graduate of Boonsboro High School and has been an auctioneer since graduating from auctioneer school the same year. It may seem early, but if you’re interested in running for office, we want to get the word out in our September Newsletter. Please write a short essay on what you’d like to do as an officer so we can let members know learn more about you and will plan to attend the December Meeting. Also please contact me so I can place you on the ballot. The money raised was to help cover mounting medical expenses. The Ruritan Club was hoping to raise $10,000.00 at the auction. The community and businesses in the area came together and donated gift certificates and other items for the auction and raised over $14,000.00 at the standing room only auction. Allyson was scheduled for surgery on March 28th at Children’s Hospital in Boston. Her surgery was successful but not a cure. She is back home. A.A.M. Auctioneers Clair L. Martin, Dale L. Martin, Ira K. Drury and Dave Magaw donated their time at this auction, and Denny & Sue Stouffer supplied the clerking equipment. The Semler Family Denny & Sue Stouffer were involved in two “WE CARE” Benefit Auctions for the five surviving children of slain Maryland Correctional Officer Jeffery Wroten (killed by an inmate in his custody). The first auction was for personal property and was held on May 6th at Miss Irene’s Child Development Center at Martinsburg, WV. The second auction was a sit down banquet on May 8th at the Four Points Sheraton in Hagerstown, MD. Approximately 110 silent and 45 live business services and new items were sold. All proceeds went directly to the children’s trust fund. NEWS 11 Midwest Auctioneer Contest Offers $10,000 Purse The newest professional competition for auctioneers is the US Open Auctioneer Championship, scheduled for August 26, 2006, and sponsored by the Indiana Auctioneers Association. The contest is open to all auctioneers and offers a $10,000 purse. It is an opportunity for auctioneer professionals to showcase skills and earn recognition. The contest and concurrent live auction are open to the public. Members of the Indiana Auctioneers Association (IAA), the nation’s largest state auctioneers organization with nearly 800 members, will help host the event. “It is fitting that the leading state associations in the auction profession would also be leaders in promoting the auction industry,” stated Jim Littlejohn, 2006 IAA President. Littlejohn anticipates entries from every Midwest state and beyond. Auction buyers who are also curious about the contest are encouraged to attend. When I tell people that I work with the National Auctioneers Association and am responsible for helping provide the educational programs, most people open their eyes wide and give me the look of “are you kidding?” When I explain to them about auction school, getting their license, getting a designation, going to CAI, and seminars, they are totally amazed. After hearing this explanation, them seemed to be amazed at all the work and study that auctioneers go through. Of course, they know very little about having to get the sale, preparing the advertising, hiring labor, checking on legal issues, setting up the sale, clerking, cashiering, and cleaning up. Being an auctioneer is a proud profession with a wonderful history. how to help sell estates as you work with bankers, attorneys and trustees. The real estate sales by auction is exploding. When you take the Accredited Auctioneer real Estate (AARE) designation class, you will learn how to market your services, create a proposal, figure all forms of financial calculations, and get prepared to enter this outstanding and growing field. The Certified Auctioneers Institute (CAI) held every March at Indiana University, is the “graduate” level program for auctioneers. This three-week, three year program will bring your skill level to the highest possible level. Education helps to open more doors to your customers. Getting the Graduate Personal Property Appraiser (GPPA) designation opens an entire new avenue to revenue. Learning to be an appraiser is a fantastic opportunity to create and generate new revenue. This can also be a lead in to getting an auction. Other programs include the Auction Manager Certificate Program, a two day course designed to teach the new auctioneer how to set up a business, the Auction Administrator day long class to teach how to run an office, or any other of the many different seminars offered throughout the year. There are also many on-line courses and Webinars. Plus, don’t forget the annual Conference and Show, the biggest convention anywhere designed just for auctioneers. Today with baby boomers starting to downsize, the Certified Estate Specialist (CES) designation can teach you how to help these people sell their extra furniture and property as they move into smaller homes. You can also learn Education can be the door to excitement, opportunity and increased business. For more information, check out the Education Institute at www.auctioneers.org, or call toll free, 888.541.8084, ext. 23 or 28. This was a real estate and personal property auction. We arrived just as the auction was starting and they were auctioning some of the box lots around the perimeter of the yard. We quickly signed up for a number and went over to see what treasures we could find. The first few went for just a few dollars and I figured I may get a deal when a box with an Annalee doll inside was brought up. Boy was I fooled...the box went for way more than I was willing to pay. We strolled around the yard checking out all of the items. When we came to the front of the house, we looked in the garage where all of the better glassware and jewelry was displayed. The estate had some very nice costume and real jewelry that I was hoping to get later in the day. We took a tour of the house (very nice) and went into the back yard where all of the furniture was under a tent. There was a very unique drop-front desk that I liked, but could not figure out where to put it in my house. They also had a lovely cherry sideboard, but again...no where for me to put it. We went back to watch Clair and then Dale sell. I have to say...they are both quick. I am not just talking about their speed, they are quick witted and make their customers laugh and feel comfortable! We waited around until the jewelry and glassware REAL ESTATE AUCTIONS NO SELLER COMMISSIONS! I was hoping to get quite a few pieces. I came out with one box of jewelry. The prices were amazing. Good for them, but not for me. Unfortunately, we had to leave after the items in the garage sold, but if the furniture and the Real Estate went anything like the other items, I am sure the estate was very happy. It was quite a drive to Hagerstown for us, but well worth it. We had a great time and plan to return soon. For more information on Clair L. I would like to thank the Association for this opportunity as this has been a wonderful job for me. It has been my pleasure to meet many people over the last 21⁄2 years, and to grow relationships with the people that I knew already; I may not have been able to have done this if it had not been for my position with the Newsletter. The best part of working on the Newsletter however, has been working with Lynne. Lynne is the one with the “English Major”; she makes sure everything is written as is should be, having said that, Lynne cannot do it all and needs your help. I believe it is time for some new blood with new ideas to join in on all of this fun! Remember, this is not a gender specific job! I know there are a lot of you in the AAM who would like to help the Association and aren’t sure what to do...here is your chance. Even if you cannot commit to working on the newsletter each time there are still things you can do. If you go to an auction that you liked (or didn’t), send in an article about it, if you go to class, send in an article, if you have a new child or grandchild, send in an article. This Newsletter can only work if we all pitch in. Even though I will no longer have the title Co-Editor, I will still be pitching in with articles...we all can help! This is your newsletter – please keep it going! WANTED – Newsletter Reporters Do you like to meet new people? Do you like to have a reason to attend other auctions when you’re supposed to be working? Do you like to learn new things? AAM needs your help if we’re going to continue to pass along to you a high quality newsletter. If you can contribute just one article every quarter or attend an AAM member’s auction just once per year and pass the photos and write up to Lynne, then you’re the perfect candidate - and you will be recognized in the newsletter as a contributing reporter. Please contact Lynne Zink at 410-852-6925 or [email protected] if you’d like to pitch in. It won’t be a lot of work, just a lot of fun. 21 22 NEWS Editors’ Note Those of you who attended the March meeting already know that Roxane Casto has resigned as newsletter co-editor. Please see page 20 for her speech. Roxane and I made a great team these past 21⁄2 years as you can see from the newsletters we put together for you. We received a lot of assistance from Sheri Odom along the way and her efforts are truly appreciated. It is good to know that Roxane & Sheri are still just a phone call/email away if I need their input or help. Roxane Casto If you can contribute an article or attend an AAM member’s auction Lynne Zink and pass the photos and write up to Lynne, then you will be recognized in the newsletter as a contributing reporter.
