JBLMmwr.com 11 Food & fun Add more color to your 12 Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus • September 2015 life – explore a new skill! By Patti Jeffrey Y ou’ve been seeing backto-school ads everywhere, but learning something fun and new can happen anytime — how about adding to your own palette of skills? Now’s the perfect time to explore your passions, hidden talents and new interests with us! You’re always welcome to talk with Family & MWR staff about anything new you’d like to try or a skill you want to sharpen. We asked some MWR staff what they can offer you, and here’s what they say. The Arts & Crafts Center “We offer glass mosaics, sewing, book binding, basic drawing techniques and picture framing classes,” says manager Lesley Hill. “However, if there’s something that you’ve always wanted to try and we have the supplies and equipment, we’re more than willing to offer a oneon-one class in your interest. “We can even set up a group workshop — maybe creating paper flowers or scrapbooking — anything that’s fun and creative for a group,” she says. “Just give us a call and we can get a class going for you!” Auto Centers “You can learn to change your oil, lube your vehicle and basically keep it in good shape at our Auto Centers,” says manager Ray Daniels. “Most of the teaching is done at the McChord Field Auto Center in one-on-one classes that cost less than shops off-base charge you for the same maintenance. “You can also learn how to change front and back brakes and tune up a four-, six- or eight-cylinder engine,” he says. “Both our Lewis and McChord shops lend you all the tools you need for automotive work — all you do is pay for the bay or lift time or for our special services, like painting your car or truck.” Bowling and golf September’s a great month to learn bowling or take up golf. A number of experienced bowlers are available in the new leagues starting up to give you some pointers (see page 8 for details on joining a fall/winter league). Now that golf is off-season, you’ll find bargains for practicing your game. If you want to learn the game, you can schedule individual golf lessons with resident pros at Eagles Pride and Whispering Firs. “I look at myself as a coach,” golf instructor Art Romero says. “I prepare beginners for golf by teaching them the complete concept of the game and how to play on the course. I help fine-tune advanced students and work with them on golf course management by showing them how to play each hole — my ‘attack the hole’ strategy. “I help reduce students’ frustration level to help them enjoy the game more, especially if it’s their first experience,” he says. “My ‘personal par’ strategy helps students try to beat their own personal best from the last game, not against the standard par or even a golf partner’s par. “I just keep it simple and practice one skill at a time. When they’re ready for more, they come back with big smiles!” The Warrior Zone “If you’d like to learn a new PC game, we have dozens of games across most ev- shuffleboard table, and our staff can show you how to play! Drop in anytime we’re open. Also practice your hand at billiards, Texas Hold ‘Em and board games that you can check out from the front desk.” Outdoor Recreation The Outdoor Rec program offers introduction to single-track mountain biking, a yearly hunting course, ongoing scuba classes for beginners through advanced divers, kayak paddle and kayak rescue skills, paddleboarding basics and an ATV RiderCourse™. “We also have a certified mountaineer (climbing and avalanche instructor) and a staffer who will start destination yoga classes and female-only trips for us soon,” says adventure programmer Robert Wade Conrad. “It’s going to be exciting!” Check out the Adventures section starting on page 14 for upcoming trip details. Improve your mind & body There’s so much more at Family & MWR to challenge your mind and body: • Attend the monthly book club and workshops at McChord Library (pages 30–31). • Take a free class to improve your relationships, finances, home and work life (see the schedule on pages 28–29). • Start a free fitness class at one of five fitness centers. Cascade SAC is located at 2402 Bitar Ave. at Lewis Main. When we work together, children tend to do better in school, stay in school longer and like school more. S ummer came and went in the blink of an eye and a new school year is upon us — new friends, new schools, new teachers and, for many military Families, a new home at JBLM. This is also a good time for Families to get involved. When schools, Families and community groups work together to support learning, children tend to do better in school, stay in school longer and like school more. According to a recent report from the Southwest Education Development Laboratory, “Students with involved parents are more likely to: • Earn higher grades and test scores, and enroll in higher level programs. • Be promoted, pass their classes and earn credits. • Attend school regularly. • Have better social skills, show improved behavior and adapt well to school. • Graduate and go on to post-secondary education. (Henderson & Mays 2002) Parent involvement, as well as partnerships with schools, are both critical for student’s success. According to the National Network of Partnerships, for parent involvement to flourish, it must be meaningfully integrated into a school’s programs and community. The network developed a framework of six types of parent involvement that schools can use to guide their efforts. It says schools can: • Help Families with parenting and child-rearing skills. • Communicate with Families about school programs and student progress. • Work to improve training and schedules to involve Families as volunteers in school activities. • Encourage Families to be involved in learning at home. • Include parents as participants in important school decisions. • Coordinate with businesses and agencies to provide resources and services for Families, students and the community. (Educational Projects in Education Research, 2014, Aug 4) Support your student from elementary school through high school graduation • Attend back-to-school night events and parent conferences. • Visit the school and its website — find information about the school, administrators, your child’s teachers and see the school calendar. • Support homework expectations. • Make sure your child eats a nutritious breakfast and gets the right amount of sleep, sending them to school ready to learn. • Teach organizational and study skills at a young age. • Get involved. • Know disciplinary policies. • Take attendance seriously. • Talk regularly with your student about school. Research has shown that parental involvement is the most important factor in a student’s success in school. Team with your child’s school to work together for a new and exciting school year.
