educational institutions in Nevada to help educate future landscape architects.
NEW PROFESSIONAL TITLE ACRONYM
BY: NEVADA STATE BOARD OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
As a registered landscape
architect, the use of an
acronym after your name
is common place. Currently
the popular one used is
R.L.A. (Registered
Landscape Architect) or
ASLA (American Society of
Landscape Architecture).
Both are considered
acceptable to the board in
accordance with the bylaws.
However, ASLA during the
past three years has been
pursuing the profession to
adopt a difference reference
instead of ASLA; as it
references the organization.
ASLA has made it a goal to
see the profession more in
line with other professions
such as engineers that all use
P.E. (Professional Engineer)
or P.L.S. (Professional Land
Surveyor) to establish
consistency and recognition
of the profession across the
US. ASLA in 2011 approved
t h e a c r o n y m P. L . A
(Professional Landscape
Architect) and is
encouraging the profession

MEMBER BENEFIT UPDATE
BY: CARRIE BECKER, ASLA
We’ve heard it over and over again… membership
is just an expensive magazine subscription. Well,
the Executive Committee is listening and working
hard to continually provide more member benefits
to our chapter. This year, in an effort to support
our members and our chapter involvement, we
will be reimbursing one member’s chapter and
national dues next year, based on participation
with NVASLA throughout 2015. If you are not a
member, we still want to see you! You will be
eligible to win one ticket to the 2015 Pink Flamingo
banquet.
For every NVASLA supported event a member/
non-member attends throughout the year, it will
be noted. Events include everything from monthly
luncheons and other chapter events to volunteering
on behalf of NVASLA and outreach to UNLV.
2
To participate, just sign in or sign up if you are
attending an event. If you are volunteering at our
request, we will keep track. At the end of the year,
the Executive Committee will tally the participation
and announce the winner. If there is a tie, those
members’/non-members’ names will be put in a hat
and a winning name for each category will be drawn.
We look forward to continually bringing new ideas
to the chapter and hope to see you at many NVASLA
events throughout the year.
Without the support of members the Nevada
Chapter of ASLA would not be as strong as it is.

to use it though “ASLA” is still acceptable for
those who want to use it. Being NAC 623A does
not recognize the P.L.A. Acronym, the Nevada
State Board of Landscape Architecture (NSBLA)
in preparation of this, wrote proposed changes
to NAC 623A in 2011 to address this. In accordance
with our bylaw processes, our board submitted
the proposed changes to the legislature staff,
held public meetings and was approved before
the legislative session ended in May. At the
NSBLA board meeting this past June, we formally
adopted Nevada registered landscape architects
can use P.L.A. after their name. You can use
either R.L.A. ASLA, or P.L.A., however, in the
spirit of ASLA’s goal, we encourage you to use
P.L.A.
Retired or Retiring Soon?
The board this past year completed the legislative
and public input processes to add language to
NAC 623A that now allows those who are retired
or soon to retire to use the title “Landscape
Architect Emeritus”. You no longer have to
maintain active registration status when not
practicing Landscape Architecture. There are
conditions for approval to this registration level.
You can find out more by emailing the board or
visiting the board’s website at www.nsbla.nv.

Paver-Grate™
While walking down the sidewalk along
the renovated New York - New York
Casino in Las Vegas, pedestrians will no
doubt notice the uniquely designed tree
grates but what is not seen is as equally
impressive. Paver-Grates™ spanning 120”
in size beneath the paver surface carries
the weight of the 60“ cast iron custom
tree grates and individually placed pavers.
Each tree grate incorporates bronze
lighting and specially sized and shaped
tree openings for the newly placed
mature trees along Las Vegas Blvd.

To:
From:
Erin Reiswerg, President, NVASLA and the members of NVASLA
Mauricia Baca, Executive Director, Outside Las Vegas Foundation
The Outside Las Vegas Foundation was so pleased to receive the Award of Honor from
the Nevada Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects on December 6,
2014. Our organization is deeply humbled to be recognized as an organization outside
the landscape architecture profession that has provided notable contributions in
conservation of natural resources and/or public landscapes within Nevada. Indeed,
OLVF has been truly privileged to work alongside the group of professionals involved in
landscape architecture as we work together to strengthen and beautify our community.
It is the mission of the Outside Las Vegas Foundation to connect people to the special
outdoor places in Southern Nevada. This supports our vision of a community that
enjoys, values and protects our special outdoor places. As noted at the event, the
Outside Las Vegas Foundation has worked for many years with the jurisdictions and
agencies involved in developing our growing open space and trail system. In the past
five years, our organization has developed programs to directly connect people to these
resources. OLVF now leads education and volunteer programs. Among these efforts is
a field trip micro-grant program that has connected almost 5000 young people and
families to Southern Nevada’s special outdoor places. OLVF also spearheads volunteer
efforts through Adopt-A-Trail programs with the City of Las Vegas and Clark County.
Begun in 2011, this program has involved thousands of residents and visitors in
volunteer efforts on local trails. The program expects to achieve a total of 10,000
volunteer hours by the close of 2015.
The great outdoor recreation opportunities available in Nevada are now celebrated
through the annual Get Outdoors Nevada Day celebration organized by OLVF. On
October 25, 2014 at Craig Ranch Regional Park (hosted by City of North Las Vegas),
almost 2000 people joined together to celebrate what Nevada has to offer. NVASLA
joined us with a booth at the event, and we hope to see you there again on October 24,
2014 at Sunset Park (hosted by Clark County).
OLVF invites the members of NVASLA to learn more about our programs, and to join us
out on a trail or in a park as volunteers! For more information, NVASLA members can
go to www.outsidelasvegas.org.
Again, thank you so much for the Award of Honor. It is truly and deeply appreciated by
our organization. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
BY DIANA GARCIA, STUDENT ASLA
As another year ends, we
always strive to make the
upcoming year better than
the one before. Many
people are happy with the
way the past year went
while others refuse to have
the same year twice. Many
accomplished so much
during the year while others
fail to miss the mark. But
hope rises from the ashes
as the clock strikes midnight
on that faithful night of
New Years Eve. The peace
of mind of a clean slate
makes all of us hopeful to
be able to mold the perfect
year. While others request
for a peaceful year, some
request for a year of change
and promise to make a list
of resolutions and stick to
it.
I have never been one for
resolutions, or coming up
with resolutions. I decided
to give it a go one year and
failed after the first month.
This year is different...it is
my BIG quarter century on
this earth. That’s right, I’m
turning 25 this year. I
believe this will be the last
year that I will be able to
say my age and not be
embarassed of it. While this
is a big age for anyone, I
want to strive to make my
big year have many
landscape architecture
achievements. One dream
that I feel I need to get a
jump on has been a dream
since I first started in the
Landscape Architecture
program and that is to
own and operate a small
cactus farm. While many
think that it is foolish, and
think that the wait time
of five years to be a fully
functioning business is
ridiculous, I feel that
patience is a virtue and
something magical will
grow from it, pun
intended.
If I want to see this dream
be fulfilled, I need to start
now so that by my BIG
30th birthday (which I
probably will say is my
25th), I will have a fully
running cactus farm. I am
pretty new at this field, so
definitely will be needing
help! If anyone wants to
give some helpful tips or
just some advise, let me
know! My future cacti and
I will be thankful for the
help! Simply message me
at [email protected]! I
need all the help I could
get. To 2015, may it be a
year of growth and
positivity.

For you reading this message, it’s 2015. As for
me, I’m writing this message right before my
2014 birthday (which also happens to be engulfed
by the holidays and close to the end of the year).
So am I the ghost of past, present or future? I
guess you can decide. As for me, I’m not sure
about the wiser part, but I’m definitely going
to be another year older. I’m not worried though
because I’ve still got my quirky attitude and
warped sense of humor.
Whether or not you are excited about it, our
chapter is growing a year older too. I’m guessing
that most of you may not know that Nevada
formed its first section as part of the Southern
California Chapter in 1990, and if you did than
you’ve either been around a while or have
actually read the NVASLA website. Regardless,
that means Nevada membership has been active
in ASLA for 25 years! Since then we have gone
onto becoming our own state chapter and have
added a northern section. I think we’ve also
had a few name and logo changes along the
way. So go ahead and pat yourself on the back
because you deserve some kudos!
We all know that growth, or lack thereof, brings
change and our chapter has had it fair share of
fluctuations. I hope we can say that the
unwelcome changes from the recent recession
are starting to subside. 2015 should bring its
share of changes and opportunities your way.
If you are still putting together your resolutions
for the year, why not think about helping out
with NVASLA. It can be as small as filling out
a survey to as large as heading the art event
committee. I would love for some old faces to
come back (WE MISS YOU!) and I welcome all
fresh new ones. Our chapter is dependent on
new or renewed participation to create and
improve our events. You can even send me an
email with suggestions and ideas at president@
nvasla.com.
With that you will see in this edition, as well as
upcoming newsletters, opportunities to
volunteer, contests to participate in, and events
to attend. Be on the lookout for some new
changes coming your way.

APPLICATION EFFICIENCY VS. WIND SPEED
AND WE PROVED IT.
You need nozzles that perform in the real world—not just in zero-wind buildings. So Rain Bird partnered with the
University of Arizona to measure application efficiency in windy conditions. Other nozzles missed the mark in windy
conditions, with more water that was pushed outside the zone area. But Rain Bird nozzles produced heavier droplets
that hit the target area with much greater efficiency as the wind speeds climbed.
