HOUSTON SPCA "Paw Pals" PATCH PROGRAM Junior Girl Scouts "PET SAFETY" Junior Girl Scouts must complete six (6) of the ten (10) activities, including the three that have the asterisks. 1. *Tour the Houston SPCA and observe 10 ways that the animal shelter keeps homeless pets safe. At your next meeting, make a chart or poster with your troop listing your observations. 2. Discover the importance of identification for your pet. Learn about the different types of identification tags: I.D. tags, tattoos, and microchips. If your dog or cat does not have an 1.0. tag, order him one today! Using the information attached, make a poster to illustrate how owners can find their pets. 3. *Learn to be safe around stray animals. When your troop visits the Houston SPCA, participate in our lesson about "Safety Around Animals." 4. *Put yourself in the shoes (or paws) of a dog or cat living on the streets. Construct an illustration of five dangerous things the animal might encounter. Share your pictures with your troop. 5. Investigate poisonous plants and other substances that could be poisonous to your pet. Something you might love (like chocolate) can be hazardous to your pet's health. Select two to three items including chocolate and find out why these are poisonous and what could happen to your pet if they ate it. Pretend to be a newscaster and report your findings to your troop. HOUSTON SPCA "Paw Pals" PATCH PROGRAM Junior Girl Scouts "PET SAFETY," CONTINUED 6. Research what contents should be in a first aid kit for pets. Make a list of supplies and compare it with the lists of others in your troop. Compare the contents between a human first aid kit and a pet first aid kit. Make sure you include animal emergency telephone numbers in the kit! 7. Visit a grooming salon or vet's office to find out how to keep your pet safe from parasites and why grooming is important to your pet's health. Have your troop conduct a "Doggy Wash." Using the information you got in your visit, prepare handouts to educate your customers about the importance of keeping their pets well groomed. 8. Have your troop observe an animal receiving a physical examination at your local vet office. Observe as they fill in a medical chart to record vaccinations, temperature, and weight. Find out how vaccinations keep your pet safe. 9. Have a Pet Therapy animal visit your troop. Find out how pet therapy animals help people. Ask the animal's owner how his pet became a therapy animal. Find out how to train a pet therapy animal. Ask where pet therapy animals are most useful. 10. Call your city or county Animal Control to find out about the leash law. Recite the law to your troop and the importance of it to keep your pet safe. Discuss the "Good Citizen" tips for dogs and make a plan for your own dog or help someone else with his/her plan. The Houston SPCA is committed to helping reunite families with their lost pets. We have added a new feature that allows people to share your lost or found posting on various social media sites such as Facebook, MySpace and many others. We encourage you to use this feature to help spread the word. You can also go to our website, www.houstonspca.org to see animals that were found and brought to the Houston SPCA. Click on a link below to view all of the pet postings that have been submitted in the past month. Eight Steps to Finding Your Pet In the event of losing your pet. The Houston SPCA recommends that you vigorously pursue the following resources: 1. Contact your local Animal Protection and Animal Control Agencies immediately. Note: If giving a report by phone be prepared to give a detailed physical description. It is always best to come view the animals in person and if possible, leave a photograph with the agencies. Place an ad in the lost and found section of the local newspapers: Houston Chronicle Ctassifieds: (713) 224-6868. 3. Contact surrounding veterinary clinics 4. Make door to door inquiries in immediate and surrounding neighborhoods. 5. Make flyers using a clear photograph and detailed description of your pet for placement in all locations of inquiry. 6.Update your voicemail to make sure callers hear a message with details about your pet's situation and your cell phone number. If someone finds your pet, you want them to be able to find you! 7. For a cat, set a humane cat trap. A frightened eat's instinct is to hide in silence. Traps can be rented from your local animal control agency. 8. Miscellaneous tips for finding your pet: • • Most "lost" cats tend to stay in the general vicinity from which they disappeared. It is rare that they would wander out of the immediate neighborhood, unless perhaps, they were recently moved. Be patient and creative in your search. A "lost" dog will tend to travel into the oncoming wind. This should be your first direction of search. After you find your pet. report back to all the facilities where you left a report. This reduces existing paperwork and increases the agencies' ability to match other lost pets with their owners. Also. be sure to take down any old flyers or posters in your neighborhood. Spay or neuter your pet. This will help alleviate your pet's desire to roam and has many other benefits. KEEP IDENTIFICATION ON YOUR PETS AT ALL TIMES! IT IS THEIR ONLY TICKET HOME!
