Tami Semas & Hot N Frosted Win Final
Qualifier for The American Semi-Finals
By Tanya Randall
Columbia River Circuit barrel racer Tami Semas and her wicked
gelding Hot N Frosted (“Hotrod”) led the field of 98 from the last
qualifier for RFD TV’s The American.
Held as a sidepot in conjunction with the $3,000-added Open
5D Pac West Barrel Race, January 18 in Buckeye, Ariz., the qualifier
sent 10 new barrel racers to the Semi Finals, scheduled Feb. 22-23
in the Mesquite Rodeo in Texas. From the 50 Semi-Finals qualifiers, the top 10 will advance to The American on March 2 at AT&T
Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Semas, a 36-year-old stay-at-home mother of two, collected
$2,205 of the $12,252 total qualifier purse, plus $1,214 for winning
the Pac West Open, with her winning time of 16.808.
“It’s been such an interesting journey with him,” said Semas of
Hotrod, a 10-year-old gelding by Hot Colours out of Miss Jay Frost,
by Tiger Frost. She purchased the gelding as a 4-year-old after he
failed to make a calf roping horse. “I futuritied him as a 5-year-old
and got into part of his derby year as a 6-year-old and he got a soft
tissue injury that had some complications. It took me three years to
get that horse back into competition. I’m just thrilled he’s coming
back. I always knew what was in him.”
Hotrod had injured his right front suspensory and what was supposed to be just four months of rest turned into an ordeal due to
man-made complications.
“I basically brought him back in June of 2013,” said Semas. “He
just came back awesome. I took him to
rodeos in our Columbia River Circuit
with Tami Semas
and he just did great.

The barrel bug also got her in the Friday night warm-up jackpot in
Buckeye.
“When I ran him Friday night in the warm-up race—I didn’t enter the slot race or anything—I knew I needed to start getting some
runs on him and I barely brushed my second barrel leaving it. He
ran a 16.82 and the slot race and everything that night was won with
a 17.1,” she explained.
On her qualifying run, Semas took some extra steps to make sure
her third barrel stayed upright.
“I dropped to turn my third too soon and he took a pretty good
step off of it not to knock it,” she said. “I rocked it but I didn’t
knock it over. I don’t know how fast he would have been if I hadn’t
of done that. It was fast enough for what we needed.”
Semas, who wanted to thank her husband Aaron and her family
for their support, is still amazed that she has her horse back after
such a long recovery.
“The journey that I’ve been on with that horse . . . it just brings
tears to my eyes,” she said. “I was told that he wasn’t going to

Jordan Bassett and Cocomo Jo Slam the Clock at Pac West
By Tanya Randall
Jordan Bassett and Cocomo Jo posted the fast-time of the year,
thus far, in the Southern Buckeye Equestrian Center in the second
round of the $7,500-added Futurity at the Pac West Barrel Race,
held Jan. 16-19.
Even with some of the toughest horses in the country in residence for The American qualifier, Bassett and her 5-year-old futurity horse slammed the clock in 16.770. Tami Semas, Prineville, Ore.,
and Hot N Frosted posted a 16.808 to win The American qualifier
the previous night. Bassett and Cocomo’s fabulous time put them at
the top of the Futurity and won the open average championship for
the weekend for total earnings of $4,654.
The duo also narrowly missed out on qualifying to The American
as well with their first go time of 17.160.
“Every run I made I had been sending him a little harder to the
first barrel,” explained Bassett, a 23-year-old barrel horse trainer
from Dewey, Ariz. “I usually loped him to it. In the holding pen, I
was getting him up and saying ‘Let’s go.’ My sister-in-law Danyelle
(Campbell) Bassett was sitting there and she was going, ‘That’s right.
It’s a speed event go fast.’ I ran really hard to the first barrel and he
went about half way to the bucking chutes. I thought ‘oh, it’s over
now. I had also carried my time over to the American. I just really
messed up.’ We just went on and he smoked the second and smoked
the third, and he ran a 17.1. We barely missed making The American on him, but won fourth in the first round of the Futurity.
“The second round, I knew if I just cleaned up my first, he would
really clock, and that’s what he did. He got around it awesome, got
around the second good, he stepped out of it a hair but he just kept

comeback after the injury. Basically it took me three years of caring
for that horse in a controlled environment. It was such a long process. They didn’t think that ligament would heal with strong enough
fiber for him to do his job. It’s pretty special to me that we got him
back.”
Having bested such a tough group of horses, Semas was immediately bombarded by calls asking if Hotrod was for sale.
“Everyone’s been asking me if I want to sell my horse and I tell
them ‘You have no idea what I’ve been through with him,’” she
said. “He’s not for sale, ever. I worked too hard on him.”

“My first run, he was on the wrong lead when I left the gate and
he switched late, so I just wanted to make sure he was on the (correct) lead and really focused in,” she said. “I told him ‘Whoa’ and
I had shortened my reins a little bit. The more runs he makes the
better he gets so I knew after I sent him faster the first time he’d be
ready for it the second time.”
The victory in the 146-entry futurity was worth $3,667 of the
$39,182 total purse. Including the $3,483 from their ninth-place
finish at the Greg Olson Memorial Futurity, Bassett and Cocomo
picked up $8,137 from their three-week run in Buckeye.
Victory and money aside, Cocomo is just lucky to be alive, let
alone pushing arena records in just two months into his barrel racing career. The Dash Ta Fame gelding out of
Sheza Jo Baby Jo, by Proudest Effort, has survived both a complicated slab fracture of his knee and colic surgery for a foreign body
that could have killed him at any time.
The setbacks were hard to swallow after it seemed fate had put
Cocomo in Bassett’s hands.
She acquired Cocomo as a 2-year-old. Long time family friend
and noted racehorse breeder Kim Kessinger had given her a threequarter sister to All-American Futurity finalist Lotta Love For
Robyn, a daughter of First Down Dash out of the Mr Jess Perry
mare Love Ya Miss Jess.
“She was given to me before Lotta Love For Robyn did anything,” she said. “Then Lotta Love For Robyn qualified (for the All
American) and made my three-quarter sister worth a lot of money
as a broodmare.
“Kim, at the time, said ‘You know what, she’s yours and you do
what you want with her.’ He was really excited for me. He’s said,
‘Make some money. This is exciting.’ Make your dreams come true
is what he told me. Shortly after that he was killed in a tragic farming accident.”
Bassett’s dad also had Cocomo Jo in training for Micah and Leslie

“At Lone Star
Park, he ran in the Texas Futurity Trials and finished dead last. I
thought this was a good time to talk to them. We traded straight
across right there and shook hands on it.”
The next morning Bassett got a call from her dad, Cocomo Jo
was lame and it was bad.
“He had slab fractured his knee,” she said. “I was beyond devastated. I couldn’t believe this was happening.”
Veterinarians wanted to pin it but they couldn’t because there was
a crack inside the slab. The best advice they could give Bassett was

to put the gelding on stall rest.
“I took him home and put him on stall rest for eight months,”
she explained. “He didn’t leave a 10’ x 10’ for eight months. I fed
him Formula 1 Noni and Cal Density. When I got him out of that
stall after eight months not only was he a fire-breathing dragon, he
was 110 percent sound. Multiple vets have seen him and they’ve all
said it’s a miracle; this can’t be real.”
After she started riding Cocomo, she had to decide whether to
run him as a 4-year-old or hold him until he was 5.
“My dad said ‘I think you should take your time with him and let
his knee really heal.’ Me and Kelsey Lutjen are really good friends and
we made a pact that we were going to hold our 4-year-olds back and
have them really solid and working well as 5-year-olds,” she said.
Unfortunately, Cocomo wasn’t done throwing Bassett curve balls.
The gelding had always had periodic episodes of colic, and after the
winter break between his third and four year, he coliced in earnest
and was taken to Dr. Renee Andrea at Chapparal Veterinary Medical
Center in Phoenix for surgery.
“They took a small piece of wire out of his small intestine. It
had been wrapped inside his small intestine and growing a fibrosis
mass,” explained Bassett. Had Cocomo’s body not walled off the
wire, it could have perforated his gut at any time and killed him.
“We’ve been through tons and tons of stuff,” said Bassett, the
daughter of lauded racehorse trainer John Bassett and his wife Ann.
“He just keeps overcoming it all. It’s unreal. It’s unbelievable.”
After a brief rest, Bassett and Cocomo will head with Lutjen and
her talented mare KN Fabs Gift Of Fame to the Diamonds & Dirt
Barrel Horse Classic in March. If their luck holds, the quartet may
head to Washington for the April futurities.
“I’ve known Kelsey since she was 7 years old,” said Bassett. “We
junior rodeoed together. She’s always been a great hand and we’ve
worked really hard together on our horses. It’s pretty special that we
have these two great horses at the same time. We’re really excited
about it.”

Teen Wins IPRA World Championship
By Julie Mankin
She’s just sweet 16, but Megan Yurko of Wheeling, W.Va., won
her first International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA) world
championship on Jan. 17-19 by the skin of her teeth. Just $11 separated first and second in the standings.
Yurko had the lead going into the Finals until her closest competitor for the championship, Tiany Schuster on Hoosier Fame,
placed in an early round to take over. But then Yurko squeaked out
a fourth-place check in the third round to reclaim the lead – barely
– with a final total of $21,545 as the season wrapped up at the 44th
International Finals Rodeo (IFR) in Oklahoma City.
“Oh my gosh, it was so crazy,” Yurko said of the nail-biting
finish. “My horse doesn’t really have a good record at that arena. I
don’t think she really likes the pen. It was round by round!”
This marked Yurko’s third qualification to the IFR, where she
picked up a trophy saddle, buckle and Oxy-Gen supplements.
Yurko was just 10 years old when her family spotted then-4-yearold Beea Stash Of Money at a horse show and later bought her
from trainer Karla Arthur (also of West Virginia). “Beea” is by The
Money Doctor – a son of On The Money Red crossed on a Bully
Bullion daughter – and out of a double-bred Mr. San Peppy mare.
“She’s 10 this year and can run on any type of ground you give
her,” said Yurko. “She’s an easy keeper; a lover. She’s my best
friend.”
Yurko is a junior in high school who says she just kind of picked
up barrel racing naturally; cutting her teeth at IBRA and NBHA
shows. Her parents run her father’s small-animal veterinary practice,
and she has two older sisters but is the only rodeo star in the family.
The Yurkos have since purchased Beea’s full brother (also from Arthur), which Yurko will begin running this summer. Currently, Beea
is being flushed for an embryo to be bred by Firewaterontherocks.

“She’s a really good horse,” Yurko said. “All she wants to do is
please her rider. We clicked so well from the very beginning. Even
if she safeties up on bad ground, she still clocks. When I qualified
for the IBRA Nationals, that’s when I met Amber Mostoller, who
convinced me to get my IPRA card. She’s the one who helped me
get started with rodeos. My dad took me everywhere until I turned
16, so last summer was my first year to start driving myself.”

Yurko doesn’t high-school rodeo because West Virginia doesn’t
have any, but this summer she is shooting for a second straight
world championship in the IPRA.
“After that, I’ll probably go to a rodeo college and be on the
team,” she said. “And by that time, I should be able to rodeo in the
PRCA and be able to make it to Vegas.”
Beea spends a lot of time at 2High Dollar Ranch near Indianapolis, where she swims and gets spa treatments and chiropractic
adjustments.
Green and Dame win IFR average
The combination of royal barrel-horse breeding with royal rider
breeding produced a youngster’s first average championship at the
44th International Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City.
Madeleine Green, the daughter of barrel-horse breeder/trainer
Mike Green of Pelzer, S.C., sped to the average title on four runs
aboard This Dame’s A Fame – coming 5 – just seven weeks after
Madeleine’s stepmother, Janelle Green, placed on her in the same
arena fourth at the BFA World Championship Futurity.
“Dame” is by Dash Ta Fame and out of Green’s famous futurity
mare Sissy’s Little Coin, who rose to stardom under jockey Troy
Crumrine. Madeleine, 24, takes credit for first choosing the palomino “Sissy” for the simple reason they had the same hair color. As a
child, she rode the great quarter-thoroughbred mare by Packin Sixes
at Fort Smith, but a later injury turned Sissy into a broodmare who’s
now 18.
This IPRA season, Madeleine had ridden an open horse all
spring, but after that horse was injured, Mike suggested she try out
Dame – who bears a lot of similarity to her famous dam.
“Dame turns like her,” said Madeleine. “And she doesn’t want
to hit barrels, which is what makes her so great in an average. She’s
honest. You can put your rein up her neck and she just wraps her
body around it. I remember riding Sissy when I was really little and

going straight to first and literally, she would jump out of way not
to hit it. She also kind of gets hot and excited, like Sissy. They just
want to do everything so perfect that they kind of freak themselves
out.”
Madeleine has a degree in broadcast journalism from the University of South Carolina, but always had a goal of one day hitting the
rodeo trail.
“Somehow I wanted to fit the two together,” she said. “I have
a radio show called Between the Barrels where I interview differIFR 44 Continued on Page 28

ent barrel racers and trainers. It’s a way I can still rodeo but use my
degree, as well.”
The show airs via 5 Star Unplugged Online Radio every Tuesday
at 7 p.m. Central.
“It’s been a lot of fun,” Green said. “I’ve interviewed Talmadge
and Lance Graves and Jolene Montgomery and some other bigname people. I actually learn a lot talking to those kinds of people.”
She can put that to use hitting some WPRA rodeos in Florida this
season while trying to make the 2014 Southeastern Circuit Finals
Rodeo on Dame’s three-quarter sister out of Sissy – 5-year-old
Sheza Dime. Green is about $100 short of filling her permit currently, but will also keep IPRA rodeos on the schedule.
Her goal in Oklahoma City had just been to win a new go-round
buckle, which she did, so the average title was icing on the cake. As
for the $7,167 in prize money, she will save it.
“Everyone makes fun of me for being so tight with my money,
but I love to save!” she said. “I don’t usually fill my car when I get
fuel; I just get a little bit. So after my win, Daddy teased me, saying,
‘You can fill it up this time.’ But I probably still won’t!”

A
s we gallop headlong into 2014 I get pretty excited! I tell
myself that each day is a new one and there are no constraints on us, no matter what the number on the calendar.
But I suppose I’m like everyone else and there is just something
about that Jan. 1 date that causes me to want to “begin again” on
something! It’s young horses for me. They are like presents and I’m
always eager to watch Mike begin to unwrap just who they really
are. He would tell you that I can be pretty annoying, sitting there on
the BROKE ones offering all sorts of advice! I also enjoy thinking about just what new and fun things we will see as the body of
Christ and watching for Jesus to come get us! It’s an adventure!
This year, though, I looked BACK...2013 wasn’t perfect for me.
SEVERAL of my goals never even came close. Injuries in my
horses and me shut down most of the horse goals. Some relationships were severely strained and I take full responsibility for it. I am
not saying that there weren’t great things last year cuz there were...it
just seemed like a pretty harsh year, physically and emotionally. So it
is with great relief that it is in the rearview mirror. And God being
God has given us the tool in His Word for such a time as this. Phil.
3:13-14, “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but
this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and
reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward
the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
That pretty much sums it up!
It’s 2014...will we conquer? Or quit.
I believe we will WIN! And all God’s children say, “AMEN!” (SO
BE IT!)
