Q: WHAT MAKES JL DASH TA HEAVEN TICK? A: He craves running barrels, he just truly loves it. He runs a lot like his mother, and his sire is Dash Ta Fame so you could say he was just bred to do it. For instance, during the Old Fort Days Derby and during the BBR Finals he was hauled back and forth to breed a full book of mares and he still ran very well (setting an arena record at the BBR Finals and winning Reserve Champion in the Old Fort Days Derby). JL Dash Ta Heaven will stay close to home until after breeding season and then towards fall I am hoping to get him to the rodeos in the Northwest. He loves Ft. Smith, he won the Old Fort Days Derby and the Old Fort Days Rodeo here last year with Jolene Montgomery, then was the Reserve Champion in the Derby here this year with Ashley Nelson, and then tied for the rodeo win this year with me. Q: WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A GOOD RODEO HORSE? A: One that likes their job and good minded enough that they don’t take a lot of tuning because there just isn’t any time for that on the road. They just have to be good minded so they don’t get to overwhelmed with all the surroundings and on top of all that, they have to be fast!! Q: HOW HAS THE 2010 RODEO SEASON HELPED YOU FOR 2011? A: I was trying to keep my horses more sound through the year so I could pick which rodeos I go to and go to a few less. However, I’m coming from the bottom again so I’ll have to go hard. My horses are running good now so it will just depends on how it all works out. Smooth My Credit, Return Of The Bully, and JL Dash Ta Heaven are all horses Jud Little raised so it is exciting to run them and try to make the NFR on homebreds from the Ranch. I am especially excited to have Smooth My Credit back, all the horses are great but she is my home base. It is also nice to be a couple horses deep at this point in the year. Sunday while the remaining competitors are forced to earn their way into the final by emerging from the exciting second chance Wildcard Saturday. “We are thrilled to present to rodeo fans a terrific mix of veteran competitors and exciting up-and-coming cowboys and cowgirls,” adds Marrington. “And our bucking stock, well, they’re the rankest animals around, bred specifically to compete in these events. It’s going to be a truly fantastic Rodeo in 2011.” Among the exciting storylines, this year’s bareback event will be a clash of the titans as Will Lowe tries for his third straight Stampede crown while Davey Shields Jr. looks to capture his fourth title in the past six years. Meanwhile, there will be some intense sibling rivalry on display: brothers Curtis and Cody Cassidy compete in steer wrestling, brothers Heith and Cody DeMoss and brothers Cody and Jesse Wright all ride in saddle bronc. The Cooper brothers – Clint, Clif and Tuf – are all competing in tie-down roping. Stran Smith and Trevor Brazile, also tie-down ropers, are both related to the Cooper boys; Smith is an uncle and Brazile is a brother-in-law. A pair of cousins will also be competing: Tyler Thompson in bull riding and Kyle Thompson in saddle bronc. Additionally, barrel racer Savannah Reeves is married to steer wrester Matt Reeves and barrel racer Lauren Byrne is married to bullfighter Jesse Byrne. Tickets and ticket package are available at www.calgarystampede.com. Calgary 2011 A Superstar Affair Calgary - This year’s Calgary Stampede Rodeo features a parade of two-legged and four-legged superstars, including 24 current and past world champions, 20 Canadian champions and 20 Calgary Stampede champions – vying for a chance at a $100,000 payday at Showdown Sunday, the richest ride in the world of rodeo. “The Calgary Stampede Rodeo is the most famous rodeo in the world not only because of the high level of competition – these 120 athletes are the best of the best – but also because of the exciting tournament format,” says Keith Marrington, Stampede Rodeo and Chuckwagon director. The unique tournament set-up ensures the competition is intense every day. “No matter how an athlete performed yesterday, each day is a new chance to qualify for the final,” says Marrington. In each of the six major rodeo events - bareback, bull riding, barrel racing, saddle bronc, steer wrestling and tie-down roping - 20 competitors are split up into two pools. Pool A competes July 8-11 and Pool B takes to the arena July 12-15. Wildcard Saturday goes July 16 and Championship Sunday is slated for July 17. Each of the first eight days of competition is a rodeo in and of itself as $17,500 in day money will be awarded in each of six events. The top four money winners in each pool advance directly to Championship Challenge Pre-Entries Due The Extended Pre-Entry Deadline for the 2011 Northern Regional Challenge is June 10, 2011. You don’t want to miss the Double BBR Qualifying Event on July 1-3, 200 in Lincoln, NE. Recently CoApproved with the WPRA. HORSE HISTORY: He wasn’t more than 3 miles from my house when I bought him as a 2 year old. A friend of mine (Shirley Maude) that is originally from England found him for me, I was upset about my horses and she said, “Oh, bloody hell, I am sorry you are so upset but I found you another Jody O Toole”. Anyway, he was a 2 year old, he had 2 works on the track but was too small for them to start so he never had a start. The day I went to look at him my Dad happened to come with me to look at him and thought I needed him and bought him for me. I sent him down to Lucky Warren (reining trainer) to get really broke. When I went to pick him up, he told me he wasn’t ready for me yet, he was too hard headed so he kept him another month. Then I brought him home and kicked him out for a while. He went to his first futurity in October of his 5 year old year. I took him to weekly rodeos and he was exposed to all the sights and sounds before he was a barrel horse at the rodeos. In fact, he can do about every rodeo event, you can heel, goat tie, breakaway, whatever you want to do. I actually trained him for my baby sister, so she would only have to take one horse to the rodeo but he just didn’t fit her. My rookie year (2 years ago) we started doing well and then his teeth got butchered and he lost a bunch of weight and we had to go home, then last year I broke my leg, and now we are just getting our confidence together again. BIT: Ed Wright Pretzel Bit HEADGEAR: Rawhide wrapped rope tiedown SADDLE: When I broke my leg last year, I didn’t realize it at the time but when I got run into, I had also broke the tree in my saddle. After I recovered, I started running Chief again but he wasn’t quite right. This spring, the Sunday before Corpus Christi I was at a barrel race and Marlene McRae was parked just a few rigs BARREL RACING REPORT down from me. I asked if she would mind if I talked to her a little and she came over and talked and eventually when we felt down his back we found out he was sore and my saddle was hurting him. Anyway, she just told me to take her saddle and pad and run him, I did and he worked great. So, I asked her if I could take the saddle to Corpus Christi and from them on we have been using the Marlene McRae Special Effx2 with Carbon Fiber tree. It was interesting that McRaes’ got some help from the same guy who had built my old saddle to develop their tree so it really fits Chief well. PAD: Marlene McRae Special Effx Wool Pad LEG GEAR: Ed & Martha Wright Leather Splints and Skid combos GRAIN: ADM HealthyGlo, MoorGlo, GroStrong Mintrate SUPPLEMENTS: Total Health Enhancement Muscle Mass and GastroPlus on the days I run him HAY: Alfalfa ADDITIONAL HORSE CARE: Respond Systems magnetic blanket and products, gets aquatred twice a week when I am home at Alliance Equine. I also use the Stress Line products. #1 TRAINING OR RIDING TRIP: I think each horse is built different and you have to train them according to what they are gifted at. There really isn’t a cookie cutter answer. I have worked with special needs kids my whole life and the horses are the same, you need to find a modification sheet for each one! You have to find what makes them happy and keeps them and yourself balanced. I train them using the Ed Wright techniques but run them in the Lynn McKenzie style. I truly believe in continuing your education. You can learn from everyone, what may not work on one, you have in your tool box to draw from later! OWNER: Jim & Pat Welch, Lander, WY HORSE HISTORY: She is a paint mare by Firewater Jets x Miss Minnie Jones. Jim got attached to the Pa Jones bloodline after he met TM Jones years ago. Jim got me hooked on them after I bought my good rodeo horse, Cimarron Jones (out of a Pa Jones mare) from Jim and Pat as a 3 yr old. Breezer is a gritty, big hearted, little, tiny mare. She had a mind of her own in the beginning. I wasn’t sure she was going to make it. After we battled through the foundation part of training, she took to the barrels much easier. She loves running barrels and getting cookies from Pat (I give her a few now and then!). She will someday make a rodeo horse because she is very focused and brave. Bad ground, and slipping & sliding doesn’t phase her. I think she makes up her time in her turns because she is so snappy. She is also very consistent. She has placed at every futurity we have been to and won a saddle series at home. I think she has won about 10k in the short time we have been going. BIT: Cervi short shank gag HEADGEAR: None SADDLE: Courts Saddle-Lynn McKenzie tree PAD: Classic Equine boots all around LEG GEAR: Wool and neoprene pad GRAIN: Ranch-Way Performance 14 SUPPLEMENTS: Platinum HAY: Alfalfa #1 TRAINING OR RIDING TRIP: I feel it is imperative to have a great foundation before you begin patterning a horse. After that, it is all about setting small goals, getting a horse confident and correct, and staying consistent. I ride a young horse the same way I will ride him when he is finished. The turns are the same, the approach is the same, and the mechanics stay the same as you begin to add speed. JUNE 7, 2011 PAGE 17 Red Desert Continued From Page 17 31.837, $535 06 pal. m. They’ll make a den secretly right in the middle of a sheep lot or pasture, even one close to buildings, roads or near activity. That way they can sneak out and grab a lamb to feed their young. That reminds me of a Scripture in the Old Testament, Song of Solomon, where it says, “Catch us the foxes, the little foxes that spoil the vines.” Sometimes it’s the little things that will add up to cause a person to miss the mark. God has commanded us not to have “other gods” before Him. It might be an innocent enough activity that snares a person but, if it gets between you and God, then it becomes an “other god”. Hobbies and special interests can become so consuming that a person will neglect going to church, reading the Bible or even praying. Some of these special interests can take up all a person’s time and money, too. Then it’s time to jerk the slack out of all earthly pursuits and give yourself a checkup on how you’re treating God. Remember God is our source for everything in this world and our salvation after death. By Shery Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries) God wants us to have things and be happy. He gave His only begotten Son so we wouldn’t perish and so we can have an abundant life (John 3:16). But with this good news also comes our responsibility to know, love and obey our Creator. True freedom, peace of mind and happiness only come when you have a close connection to God. Make Jesus your Lord and Savior, spend time reading God’s instruction manual (the Bible) and talk to God. When you talk to God as a friend, telling Him your fears and needs, be sure to also thank HIm for His protection and provision. Then take time, also, to listen to any corrections or advice He has to give you. Be watchful that the little things (like the foxes) don’t slip in and alienate you from our awesome God. M ike Morrison and his wife, Sherry, are ordained ministers and pastors of “Church at the Barn” in Gillette, Wyoming. They also travel widely, ministering by invitation, at ranches, futurities, churches, community halls and rodeos. You can contact them at: Mike Morrison Ministries, PO Box 2439, Gillette, WY 82717 or call 307.685.2272.
