Poppino Takes Flight in Fort Worth
BARREL RACING REPORT - Fast Horses, Fast News since 2007 - Volume 4, Issue 6 www.barrelracingreport.com February 9, 2010 Poppino Takes Flight in Fort Worth BRR: Take us through your three runs at Fort Worth. Poppino: We brushed the first barrel during the first round, but it didn’t fall. So, we worked on our turn some before Friday. The second run was one of those awesome runs that you dream about. Goose smoked his first barrel, and the rest is history. Once I get my timing right, his first barrel is wonderful. The third run was a little scary. He hung his back right foot as he set for the first and it went out behind him, then his right hip hit the ground, but he jumped right up and took off. So many things flew through my mind: “Oh no, pull up. No, there’s still the average. What if he’s hurt?” He took off and I felt those first few steps and everything felt alright, so off then it was, “run, baby, run, we’ve got time to make up!!” BRR: After winning Fort Worth, you now are #1 in the NFR standings with over 20k in earnings. Will this change your plans for the year at all? Poppino: No, my partners; Cowboy Rigs, Total Health Enhancement and EquiPride expect me to rodeo and that’s what I love to do. I will probably go to most of the same rodeos I go to every year. This great start will help; and is more money than I have ever had won at this time of the year, but I’m hungry and ready to go to back to Vegas after missing it the last two years. BRR: How are you going to split up the work between the horses? Poppino: I will run the horse that I feel will work best in each particular pen with the set up and the ground conditions. If the ground is questionable at all Goose will get to run. He stands up better on the questionable ground. I want to keep them both healthy and feeling good, so that plays a part in the decision, also. BRR: You have devoloped both of your own rodeo horses Docs Hickorys Cross (Goose) and Perryman Star (Amigo), what are a couple keys to developing great rodeo horses? Poppino: I start with horses that are already really broke and handle themselves. Usually we rope on them first, but I treat each one as an individual. I have two polar opposites, and my training has been completely different. I took it very slow with Amigo, because he could have blown up so easily. With Goose, he just got thrown into the fire and learned on the job. But he was lazy and nothing bothered him. I am truly blessed by God to have these two. You can’t see heart, but that’s the most important factor. BRR: What is your favorite part of rodeoing? Poppino: I love the competition. I love the challenge of the ever changing set of arena conditions. The ground is different in different parts of the country, the arenas are different sizes, shapes and colors. Being able to put together a great run is always an adrenaline rush, and if you get to win, that’s just icing on the cake! Many of you out there might have broodmares or mares you are competing on that you’d like to be raising colts out of. You are interested in finding out the facts about the embryo transfer process. Embryo transfer has become common practice with high end mares of nearly every discipline. For instance, AQHA Racing Broodmare of the year, First Prize Dash (full sister to First Down Dash) had 6 starters and two Grade 1 Stakes Winners in 2006 alone via use of embryo transfer. Barrel racing mares such as Lady Perks, SX Frenchmans Vanila and Firewater Fiesta have also taken advantage of embryo transfer after their barrel racing careers were over. Now many of today’s top barrel racing mares such as recent Fort Worth Stock Show short go winner, Mulberry Canyon Moon, multiple futurity money winner Fantasia Fame, top rodeo barrel horses Frosty Feelins and Buggin To Kill keep barrel racing while producing foals through recipient mares. These are just a few examples of mares involved in embryo transfer practices. We turned to Dr. James W. Bailey at Royal Vista Southwest to answer a few common questions about the embryo transfer process. Hopefully this will help you make some of your tough decisions this breeding season. Royal Vista Southwest - Embryo Transfer Q&A BRR: Tell us a little background of Royal Vista Southwest & Dr. Bailey. RVSW: Dr Bailey has been practicing equine reproduction in Oklahoma since 1980. In 2001 RVSW opened our doors and have performed over 7000 embryo transfers. Could you take us through the basic procedure? RVSW: The donor mare is bred at the appropriate time in her cycle to achieve fertilization of her egg. Seven days after ovulation her uterus is flushed to harvest the embryo. The embryo is located with the aid of a microscope and prepared for transfer to the synchronized recipient mare. The embryo is passed through the cervix of the recipient mare and deposited in her uterus. BRR: What are the normal costs associated with the procedure? RVSW: The costs for embryo transfer can vary greatly. At Royal Vista the cost is approximately $3500 after return of the recipient mare. If multiple embryo transfers are performed on the same mare the cost can be reduced further. BRR: Can you continue to compete on a horse that is having an embryo transfer done? RVSW: Yes, donor mares are able to produce offspring while performing in many performance disciplines. Breeding and transfer can be performed whenever the mare schedule permits. Also embryos can be vitrified (frozen) in the summer and fall, and transferred early in the next season. BRR: Do embryo transfers affect competition horses? RVSW: Most mares continue to perform at their usual level. There is no known reason why embryo transfer should interfere with a Embryo Transfer Continued on Page 9 5 Girl Flair, Alexis Haecker, 16.788, $94 6 Highlighted Chex, Andrea Herron, 16.794, $80 7 Paint, Bridgette Ivicic, 16.794, $80 5D 1 Sienna, Jana Riley, 17.255, $199 2 Rally, Deborah Matusevich, 17.270, $153 3 Bubba, Mattie Elder, 17.304, $115 4 Harley-Janet, Janet Aubihl, 17.348, $92 5 Nitro, Elizabeth Petru, 17.355, $76 6 Will, Tiffany Rumfield, 17.366, $69 7 Little Lady What, Alexis Haecker, 17.369, $61 FEBRUARY 9, 2010 PAGE 7 BARREL RACING REPORT FEBRUARY 9, 2010 PAGE 8 Embryo Transfer Continued From Page 7 mares performance. BRR: If someone is thinking of having an embryo transfer done on their mare, how far in advance should they start preparing and what should they do? RVSW: If an owner wants to do transfers early in the year, the mare should be under lights starting December 1st. We recommend routine pre-breeding season biopsy and culture for all mares except maidens. These procedures can be money and time saving if any problems are detected. BRR: What are the success rates for embryo transfer? RVSW: Almost 60%-70% of normal breedings will produce an embryo. We expect 82%-85% of embryo transfers to result in pregnancies. BRR: If someone is considering having an embryo transfer done at a facility, what kind of questions should they ask to make sure the facility is able to successfully handle their embryo transfer? RVSW: The two key factors for success in embryo transfer are experienced veterinarians and high quality, well screened and prepared recipient mares. We start each season with several hundred mares under lights that have all vaccinations and routine parasite control. BRR: Is there an age limit for mares when it comes to embryo transfer? RVSW: Many mares will stop cycling and producing eggs sometime in their mid 20’s, although we have successfully produced foals from mares as old as 32. Older mares that do not carry their own preganacies usually will produce more embryos for a longer time period. We can start with mares as young as 2. BRR: How many embryos can be harvested from a mare in a year? RVSW: We have many donor mares that produce 5,6 and even 7 embryos per year. BARREL RACING REPORT BRR: Does the embryo transfer colt receive any physical or mental attributes from their recipient mares? Do you have to be careful selecting recipient mares? RVSW: The resulting foals receive their physical attributes from the sire and donor mare. Some behavior may be learned from the recipient nursing the foal. One should always try to select gentle mares that complement the early imprinting and halter breaking of the foal. BRR: Explain what is being done with frozen embryos and the advantage of them. RVSW: Great strides have been made recently with vitrified or frozen embryos. The best advantage is that embryos can be collected at anytime of the year and and transferred at a more desireable time of the season. Also older mare’s embryos can be vitrified for future use. BRR: Can you explain what the characteristics that the most successful embryo transfer mares possess? RVSW: Donor mares need proper nutrition and preventative medicine for maximum reproduction. A low stress environment also is necessary for most mares to cycle normally. The most successful donor mares are in good body condition as a result of a balanced nutritional program. They are healthy and well vaccinated with proper parasite control. They also are relaxed and content in a low stress environment. BRR: Lastly, what are the advantages of using embryo transfer? BARREL RACING REPORT To train QH off the track FEBRUARY 9, 2010 PAGE 23 Headin’ For Home W e all know how frustrating it can be when we call in a good farrier, have a good job done horseshoeing and then a freak accident causes the horse to lose a shoe. This is similar to what happens to us sometimes. We can be going along and all seems well. We’re trusting the Lord, praying, reading the Bible and doing our best to walk in love. Then, out of the blue, we get up and the whole day goes downhill and our weak human nature seems to take over. We get mad and blow off steam, we make some critical judgements, speak negatively and definitely aren’t showing Christian behavior. Go immediately to the Lord! Don’t wait until you get into strife and start harboring resentment and offense which opens the door to the devil to work all kinds of evil in your life. Repent of your poor attitude and ask the Lord, in the name of Jesus, to forgive you and help you be the kind of person He wants you to be. If someone has done you an injustice, ask God to help you By Mike Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries) forgive them. Say that you choose to forgive them. You might not feel like it but if you make the choice, you can forgive them through Jesus and you’ll feel better for having done it. First John 1:9 tells us that if we confess our sins to God. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. When you have a problem with your horse’s shoes, you don’t wait around but you get the horseshoer right back to fix the problem. Likewise, we need to do the same. When we mess up, we need to go straight to God and He’ll fix the problem!! M ike Morrison and his wife Sherry are ordained ministers in their own non-denominational church in Gillette, WY. They also travel widely as circuit riders ministering over a large area of the western states.
