on dilapidated instruments and to an
audience of about 400 fellow prisoners
and guards in the rain. Messiaen later
recalled: “Never was I listened to with such
rapt attention and comprehension.”

HEBREO
In the late Renaissance, at the height
of Mantua’s artistic splendour, a young
Jewish violinist Salomone Rossi burst
through the barriers of discrimination
and became one of the most renowned
composers and performers at the court
of the Gonzaga dukes. In 1622, he
revolutionized Jewish music with his
Songs of Solomon, the first collection ever
of originally composed music for Hebrew
psalms and prayers. Founded in Israel, the
male vocal ensemble Profeti della Quinta
(“Prophets of the Perfect Fifth”) aims to
create vivid and expressive performances
of music of the Renaissance and Baroque
periods. Founded in the Galilee region of
Israel by Elam Rotem, the ensemble is
currently based in Basel, Switzerland.

musical history and is often regarded as the ‘queen
of all instruments.’ Its soulful diversity of expression
is captured in many musical genres from classical
to klezmer. The festival violinists will express, in the

—BACHTRACK
The Festival begins with collectif9 who will perform a
varied selection of classical and folk-inspired music, in this
unique celebration of the violin. Quebec’s globe-trotting
collectif9 (“collectif neuf”), a nine-piece string ensemble,
presents classical music with rock-style charisma,
combining boldness and the highest of musical standards
with amplification and lighting. From Gagnon to Golijov,
passing though Brahms and Schnittke, the classical and
Québécois repertoire of the group is integral to its identity.

Zukerman is indeed a master of our time. In 2013, the

Elvira Misbakhova and the great collaboration
between the Klezmer musicians on stage will
make this show unforgettable. In addition to their
own performances worldwide, they have been
featured on stage with Orchestre Symphonique de

Eastern Europe, nomadic Jewish musicians known
as “klezmorim” performed at weddings and other
celebrations. Kleztory’s performances are emotionally
charged shows, replete with humour and energy.

TIFF comes to Kingston
Wednesday, March 29, 2017 @ 7:30 PM
Bravely bearing witness to injustice worldwide, the Isabel
partners with Toronto International Film Festival and
Human Rights Watch in presenting three feature films of
the TIFF 2017 Human Rights Watch Film Festival telling
extraordinary stories of struggle, survival, and hope.
Songs of Freedom
Superstar soprano Measha Brueggergosman explores
her African heritage & the powerful music born by the
hard path from slavery to freedom. Measha performs an
intensely powerful and spiritual collection of ‘Freedom
Songs’ that emerged from Africa via the slave trade to
America, then to Canada via the United Empire Loyalist
migration and the Underground Railroad. “My exploration
of African-American spirituals is a way for me to challenge
my classically trained mind. It is helping me to become a
better musician. But there is another reason why spirituals
are so important to me. I wanted to explore this repertoire
because it’s dear to my heart. These spirituals are close to
my Christian faith. They are also a very important part of my
family’s history. It is the music of my people. My ancestors
were stolen from Africa and sold into slavery in the United
States before finding freedom in Nova Scotia.”
MEASHA BRUEGGERGOSMAN
The three films will be announced in January 2017
for the April 2017 screening.
