If you are enrolled in a Sociology course for Winter quarter, please remember to complete your online instructor evaluation
and TA evaluation (if applicable) by 11:59pm Sunday, March 13th. Evaluations can be accessed through eCommons.
eCommons sends automated email reminders to complete available evaluations. Once you complete the evaluations, these
emails will stop. Evaluations are very important to departments, instructors and TAs. Please take the time to complete your
available online evaluations.
Due to an issue currently being resolved with IT, the evaluation email notification may have gone into your Spam
Folder. Please be sure to check your Spam Folder.
3. SOCIOLOGY WAIT LIST INFORMATION
If you have any questions about wait lists, please contact the undergraduate advisor, do not contact the instructor.
Useful Guides:
Wait List Advising Flow Chart
Registrar's FAQs
How to Swap Onto Wait List (Use if you are already enrolled in 15 or more units or have a time conflict)
How to Add to a Wait List
How to Drop From a Wait List
How to Avoid Common Wait List Mistakes
Wait List Information and Best Practices:
Check your wait list enrollment appointment. The wait list appointment is listed along with your other enrollment
appointment(s) and has a "10.00" listed under "Max Wait List Units" column. You may only wait list for a course if you
meet the restriction and prerequisite on the course.
The last day to add yourself to a wait list is April 5th by 11:59pm. Wait lists are purged April 6th. Wait list enrollment
is available before the 8th day of instruction. Note: if you enroll onto a wait list after the first day of instruction, and
you did not attend the first day of instruction, it is up to the instructor if they will consider you for a seat in the course.
Please check-in with the instructor if you have added yourself to the wait list after the first day of instruction.
All Sociology wait lists are set to "auto-enroll," until the first day of instruction. Auto-enroll means that as a seat
becomes available, the next eligible student on the wait list will be automatically enrolled. Reg FAQ.:"When signing
up for the wait list it is important to make sure you do not have any time conflicts and you have indicated the swap
you would like to take place if enrolled from the wait list. If there is one of these errors, the process will fail to enroll
you, and move on to the next person on the wait list. The wait-list position number may not be the order in which
students enroll."
For the Sociology department, auto-enrollment will stop the morning of the first day of instruction (March 28th). From
that point on it is up to the instructor who gets into the course with a permission code. Instructors have their own
processes and may not follow the wait list position numbers.
If you are not auto-enrolled by the first day of instruction, attend the first day to determine if you will be able to enroll.
Attendance in the first class meeting is mandatory. Students who do not attend the first class meeting, the instructor
may drop from the course/wait list.
How to Avoid Common Wait List Mistakes:
The course you wish to wait list for will put you over the 19 unit limit:
Students can not enroll in more than 19 units until the first day of instruction. You will not be auto-enrolled into
the course if you are attempting to enroll in more than 19 units.
Best Practice: Swap yourself on to a wait list. Using the "swap" tab in your MyUCSC enrollment page will
allow you to choose the course you want to drop from your schedule if you are auto-enrolled into the wait
listed course. If you are skipped on the wait list please refer to the email you will receive at the end of the day

from the registrar with directions on how to resolve the issue.
If you have a time conflict:
If the course you wish to wait list has a time conflict with a course you are already enrolled in, you will be
skipped on the wait list.
Best Practice: Swap yourself on to a wait list. "Swap" to indicate the course you want to drop that has a time
conflict. Or adjust your schedule prior to your wait list enrollment appointment time to prevent time conflicts. If
you are skipped on the wait list please refer to the email you will receive at the end of the day from the
registrar with directions on how to resolve the issue.
Choosing section:
For courses that have a lecture and section, when you initially add/swap yourself on to a wait list you will need
to choose one section to wait list under.
Best Practice: Choose a section that fits with your schedule, still has seats available, has the lowest number
of students wait listed, and/or sections that are listed at the bottom or are unpopular sections (usually Friday
or night sections). It is difficult to predict which section might have a seat become available, so if you have
followed the best practices as much as possible, it is ok if you remain in the section you chose. The registrar
will NOT send an email to you to inform you that you were skipped for this reason. Please keep an eye on the
schedule of classes to see if it would be beneficial to change the section you have wait listed for. To change
your section selection without losing your spot on the wait list, you must contact the office of registrar for help.
Otherwise, you may drop from the wait list and enroll again to the bottom of the wait list.

5. SOCY 176A WORK AND SOCIETY ENROLLMENT INFORMATION & APPLICATION - DUE BY MARCH 11
Spring 2016
Sociology 176a Work & Society:
Origins & Impacts of the Housing Crisis in Santa Cruz
Tues and Thurs 10 – 11:45am
Physical Sciences Rm 130
Prof. Steve McKay
The Center for Labor Studies, Dept. of Sociology, and Critical Sustainabilities Project, along with the Community Action
Board of Santa Cruz County, are launching a community-based research project on the rental housing crisis in Santa Cruz,
and we invite undergraduates to participate. Santa Cruz, renowned for its sustainability, is now the least affordable small
city and the city with the highest per capita homelessness in the U.S.. How can we make sense of this contradiction, both
socially and ecologically? What are its origins and impacts? How is it experienced? What solutions are being proposed?
This course is the second in a two-course sequence – focusing on conducting field research (surveys/interviews) in the
Santa Cruz community (focusing on Beach Flats and Lower Ocean neighborhoods). Priority for this second course will be
given to those that enrolled in the first course in W16: Socy 177e EcoMetropolis – (which explored the roots and major
drivers of the local housing crisis, and its impacts for our community and ecosystem). This second course focuses on
collecting data on how community members experience the housing crisis locally, examining such issues as rent burdens,
overcrowding, evictions, displacement and increased commute times. We will be organizing research teams to help with the
following: conduct door-to-door surveys (in English and Spanish), in-depth interviews (in English and Spanish), conduct
survey and interview data analysis (SPSS and qualitative coding), do visual/audio documentation of the housing crisis and
renters, create digital stories, create digital maps, and build a website to showcase the research as well as provide access
to resources related to housing. Priority for entry in SOCY 176a will go to those who have taken SOCY 177e but spots for
new students to the project will be available.
If you are interested in the course, you must fill out an application. The last day to submit the questionnaire is Friday, March
11th, however, permission codes will be sent to eligible students on a rolling basis. The sooner you complete the form, the
better. To fill out an application, please go to: http://goo.gl/forms/USOTeMN8cV (You must be signed into your UCSC
email to have access).
If you have any questions, please direct them to Professor Steve McKay ([email protected]).

6. WORKING FOR DIGNITY ART EXHIBIT AND OPENING RECEPTION - FEB. 11- MARCH 12
Available Feb 11, 2016 - March 12, 2016
Mary Porter Sesnon Faculty Art Gallery, UCSC
Exhibit Information: http://art.ucsc.edu/galleries/working-dignity
Exhibit artists include:
Natalie Alas (junior, Sociology and Economics)
Christine Petersen (graduate in Sociology 2015)
Edward Ramirez (graduate in Fine Art and Sociology 2015)
Steve McKay (Associate Professor of Sociology and Director, UCSC Center for Labor Studies)
The explosion of low-wage jobs in our "new economy" too often leave workers struggling in poverty, exhausted or hurt,
harassed and demeaned, and with few ways out or up. The shift toward more precarious work prompts us to ask: is there
still dignity in work? Taking inspiration from a variety of social documentary traditions, this exhibit explores low-wage work
and workers across Santa Cruz County. The art is part of the larger Working for Dignity research project carried out by
UCSC students, the Center for Labor Studies and the Chicano Latino Research Center. We use a range of media photography, lithography, digital story-telling, video, wheat-paste public art, and sculpture - to represent and reflect on
working people in our community and honor those whose work often goes unseen.

12. INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY: MEALS ON WHEELS OF SCC & 2-UNIT FIELD STUDY - DUE MARCH 10
Background
Meals on Wheels for Santa Cruz County, is a non-profit organization that serves meals to seniors who have trouble meeting
their own nutritional needs. The mission of the program is to help enhance the lives of older adults by offering quality meals
and caring human contact. Meals on Wheels has been providing meals in Santa Cruz County for over 35 years, serving
roughly 600 meals to senior every weekday, with the number of people in need growing almost daily. Despite this growing
need, funding for the program has been dramatically cut. In the past decade alone, Meals on Wheels has lost $500,000 in
annual funding, representing a loss of 25% of program revenue.
The internship program in collaboration with the Sociology department at UCSC, will be affording student interns an
opportunity to assist Meals on Wheels with required program activities while providing students meaningful contact with the
elderly community in Santa Cruz County. Student interns will be engaging in activities that provide opportunities to directly
observe the challenges and issues of aging in our society.
Internship Position & Eligibility
The (unpaid) internship positions will begin at the start of each quarter, and will last the full 10 weeks of the quarter. Eligible
applicants will be interviewed (phone) by the Meals on Wheels of Santa Cruz program manager prior the start of the
quarter. Students must be available via email and phone. The majority of communications will be done via email. Chosen
interns will also need to go through the background check, which generally takes about 10 processing days.
Applicants must have a car, a valid CA driver's license, and car insurance as you will be making home visits with the
members in Santa Cruz, Watsonville, Ben Lomond, or Live Oak. Students must be in good standing, be a Junior or Senior,

We are a youth development based nonprofit organization which harnesses the power of sports and service to provide low
income youth with role models and the opportunity to learn beneficial life lessons on and off the field. The main way that
we do this is by partnering with community based organizations to make sure each sports program has access to quality,
trained coaches who are passionate about sports and child development. We currently partner with over 120 organizations
ranging from YMCAs, Boys and Girls Clubs, Girls on the Run, SCORES, etc. and since 2002, our coaches have coached
over 75,000 kids. We recruit and train motivated college students and community members who serve as volunteer
coaches, mentors and role models in afterschool sports programs serving girls and boys who live in some of our most
under-resourced communities. We promote positive peer relationships, inspire leadership in kids and ensure the emotional
and physical safety of all our athletes. Without our volunteer coaches, many of our program partners wouldn’t be able to
offer quality sports and mentors to their kids.
We are an established student organization here at UCSC and we are still looking for enthusiastic students to serve as
team captains and volunteer sport coaches. In this position, they will have the opportunity to not only make a mark at
UCSC, but in the Greater Santa Cruz community as well. If you have an opportunity, please check out this short video of
who we are: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDdH2KMOer4

The information sciences focus on helping people to discover better information, design and use better technology, and
make better decisions to solve problems. Whether those problems are in business, medicine, education, the arts, or any
number of other fields, information professionals are able to grapple with the challenges and opportunities of the digital age.
i3 welcomes students from all majors and academic disciplines. The information sciences are incredibly diverse and
interdisciplinary. With so many different specializations, students can find a program that meets their interests.
