It’s the September school holidays! Join us as we celebrate anniversaries of Bedok and
Bishan Public Libraries as they turn 28 and 7 respectively! They are many programmes
and activities to participate so check them out on pages 18-21.
As part of Read! Singapore 2013, enjoy a storytelling session based on The Very Hungry
Lion and meet the author, Gita Wolf in person. She will also be conducting a hands-on
workshop on Warli style of tribal art from Western India. Thirsting for more stories and
craft activities? Check out the myriad of activities and programme.
Create your own version of Charlotte’s Web Party! or go Crazy for Chocolate. Have
you always wanted to investigate and write exciting stories? Sign up for Broadcast

Journalists from Lianhe Zaobao, together with their volunteer readers, will be at Toa Payoh
Public Library to share the joys of reading Chinese stories with our little young readers. Starting
from January, make it a weekly Saturday date with them! Believing strongly that good reading
habits and love for Chinese should start from young, Zaobao journalists and volunteers will
be telling stories of different genre, including original stories from Zaobao's very own student
publication, Thumbs Up Junior. This programme is open to children aged 4-8.

from Temasek Polytechnic (A Teatro For Kids

for children, “Lebai Malang” (In Malay). Pak
Lebai survives on the principle of accepting any
form of free meals. When three invitations were
made to him simultaneously, which one should
he attend? His habit of relying on the blessings
of others, results in disappointment. Greed

artist workshop!
In this fun holiday activity, artists will guide you
in the process of poster design. The workshop
includes a hands-on session for participants to
create their own campaign posters.

About the artist
Gilles Massot moved to Singapore in 1981
after studying architecture in Marseille,
France, and graduating in photography. His
work establishes links between disciplines,
ideas, people, history and ethnology. His
photojournalistic work has been extensively
published in various magazines, and his artistic
work presented in more than fifty exhibitions
in France and Asia. His work is part of the
collection of the Singapore Art Museum and
the Maison Européenne de la Photographie
in Paris. In 2007, he was appointed Artist for
the Buona Vista Station, Circle Line, as part of
the Land Transport Authority’s Integrated Art
Programme. He is a faculty of Fine Arts lecturer
at LASALLE College of the Arts, a lecturer in
photo history at the School of Art, Design and
Media-Nanyang Technological University, and a
member of the Artists Village.

Join us as we celebrate Malay Language Month
this coming 14 September 2013 at Bedok
Public Library. Immerse yourself in an enjoyable
afternoon of activities which include learning
and playing traditional games such as congkak
and batu serembat, test your knowledge of
simple Malay peribahasa (idioms) and try your
best at guessing the answers to some tricky
teka-teki (puzzles). Be entertained by special
performances, storytelling by students from St.
Hilda’s Primary School and a unique storigami
presented by our very own librarian! The event
is open to all and no registration is required.

This 5 week workshop is suitable for children

to dramatize their stories, each having a
different role to play. The workshop will
culminate in a showcase whereby parents
will be invited to watch their children perform
their short dramatic pieces. This workshop
serves to reinforce children's grasp of the
Mandarin language, training them to use the

Hear from Gelyn Ong, WWF-Singapore’s 9-year old Young
Ambassador, about how you can help save the forest. She
will share about the threats facing the Heart of Borneo, and
how even children can do their part to protect it. The session
will also feature an entertaining multimedia presentation
based on Gelyn’s first illustrated book, “The Forest Fable”.

About the speaker:
Gelyn Ong is a 9 year old ingénue whose creative efforts are inspired
by her interest in and passion for the natural environment. She started
dabbling with crayons and colour pencils at the tender age of two.
Since then, not only has she graduated to acrylics on canvas, her love
for art has also gone towards helping the less fortunate, especially
children. From August 2010 till to-date, Gelyn’s paintings have helped
to raise close to S$500,000 for various charities. Gelyn has been
WWF-Singapore's Young Ambassador since 2012 and is engaged in
raising awareness on environmental conservation amongst her peers.
Combining her artistic talent and passion for the environment, Gelyn
published her first illustrated book, “The Forest Fable”, in 2013.

2013 Children’s Art Exhibition “JOYRIDE – A Journey of Joy” at the library! Held from 27th to 29th
September, 200 of their students’ works will be displayed from all over Singapore. “JOYRIDE” will
be a thought-provoking and visually stimulative exhibition, featuring their students’ interpretation
of the word “Joyride” and offering a perspective into their inner world. In conjunction with SAC, an
