Dear Readers,
There is a saying: you are only as old as you feel. This month, invigorate yourself with the
creative possibilities of artistic expression as we celebrate Silver Arts at the libraries.
Seniors can choose from a wide array of fun and engaging Silver Art programmes, from
Peranakan Tile Block Printing to a Crosstalk Workshop. Reflect on your own personal
journeys in Silver Memories, a showcase of life stories brought to life through dramatic
readings, produced by fellow seniors from The Arts House’s Silver Writing Programme.
Find out the different roles art has in the lives of the fifty-plus in various exhibitions at
selected libraries (see page 5), and head over to the Plaza at the National Library Building
for Arts on the Move, a special series of events, including crafts and dance programmes,
happening throughout the month. All this and more in our special feature on pages 4 and 5.
September also marks the 10th anniversary of Bishan Public Library. If you haven’t
visited this library yet, known for its signature colourful pods, here’s your chance – Bishan
Public Library has planned a slew of exciting events for its month-long birthday celebrations.
Turn to page 17 for highlights such as a guitar performance and a talk on personality types.
Carpe diem and see you at the libraries!

Cyberspies: The Secret History of
Surveillance, Hacking, and Digital Espionage
BOOK
REVIEW
“T
he Computer was born to spy”
so begins Corera’s fascinating
and chilling book on the
relationship between computers and man,
between governments and citizens, and
between nations – in peace and at war.
Corera is a journalist who has been spying
on computers for a long time.
The book covers the birth of the computer
through the efforts of Alan Turing and Tommy
Flowers. It tells the story of the birthplace and
midwives of the computer. One of Turing’s
crucial inquiries was whether instructions can
be fed into machines in the same way as data.
Corera moves on to the use of computers in
espionage and spy-hunting. He describes
how Britain initiated but let slip the lead in the
sphere of computer development and high-tech
espionage, allowing America to assume its
dominance in this area.
Before he comes to the rise of China and the
digital Dragon, Corera tells the story of cyber
war and attacks on government computers.
The story of the 1988 attack on the National
Computer Security Center (NCSC) is an
incredible one that seems to be more fiction
than fact; but once we are reminded it was real
the chill becomes hair-raising. The man who
unleashed an ‘immortal’ worm into the NCSC’s
computer system is none other than Robert
Morris, who goes by the same name as his
father. The senior Morris was then the Chief
Scientist of NCSC.

Gordon Corera
2016 Pegasus Books
Call No. English 327.1202854678 COR
Corera writes about the challenge China poses
in the realm of espionage, disabusing his
readers of the image of the old school ‘James
Bond’ spies. He warns that “it is a mistake when
trying to grasp Chinese cyber espionage to
attempt to make it conform to a world it does
not inhabit”. He explains that in the West, spying
“is a specialised, professional discipline which
is kept as secret as possible” whereas “the
distinction between intelligence and information
is less clearly defined” in China.
And then, the danger that lurks – the Americans
and Israelis unleashed Stuxnet, crippling an
Iranian uranium enrichment plant. This was a
stupendous exercise. “How did the Stuxnet
code get into the Iranian computers when those
computers were not connected to the Internet?
But the point is that Stuxnet is now in the open.
Others will follow.”
But in the 1990s, it seemed for a while that
times might have been hard for spies. The end
of the Cold War removed the old enemy. It also
coincided with the digital revolution and, as
one American senator proclaimed, he found
out more from CNN than a National Security
Agency (NSA) briefing. This almost led to a
decline in spying when the American and British
governments implemented financial cuts on
their espionage and security agencies. This was
the era of the optic fibre. By 2015, 90 per cent
of the world’s data was transmitted through this
cable. It is the modern era’s telegraph.
The Little Paris Bookshop
Nina George, 2015 Abacus
Call No. English GEO
It can be seen, perhaps not at once, but on
hindsight, how private enterprises can benefit
and spur further growth in the use of cyber
technology for harmless spying. “Harmless” did
we say? American Express, Corera tells us, was
a pioneer user of data in this way. It bought data
“to crunch through purchasing patterns and
understand customer habits” and that enabled
Amex to send “targeted offers on people’s
billing envelopes which led to an increase in
card spending”.
If all that does not scare the reader, Corera goes
on to tell us how Google soon got into the act,
and realising that “there were riches in this”, it
“developed its own email system . . . which it
uses to scan people’s communications to target
advertising better”. This is how machines talking
to machines result in people being led by the
nose to the altar of the advertiser. And as early
as 2004, even Google executives realised that
the vast amount of data they possess will drive
the NSA to ecstasy.
All that data was not mined from secret
sources or in secrecy. A network chart can be
built from a person’s Facebook profile. It is all
about cross-referencing. It is easy when you
have the data; and data is all there. If the NSA
represents the state’s interests, Corera brings
up both the pros and cons of the state’s use of
cyber technology. The state can track specific
cell phones that are geared to be used as
detonators of bombs. Yet it can also use the
same cyber system and technology to spy on
all and sundry, which, in peacetime, includes
its own citizens. That brings us to Corera’s final
chapters – on encryption, accountability, and
exposure – where he discusses the exciting
story of Edward Snowden and the fallout from
his disclosures.
Finally, Corera tells us where the future
battleground will be – encryption. There will
be a tussle between the state and individuals
exemplified by people like Snowden. Corera
writes that for people like Snowden, “encryption
had the power to bind the state and the power
to bind the individual, altering the fundamental
balance of power between the two. The state
and its spies, unsurprisingly, did not want to
be bound”. Ultimately, it becomes the familiar
tussle of modern life – security versus privacy.
The more innocent people are killed, the more
votes security will garner.

The Sympathizer
BOOK
REVIEW
T
he Sympathizer is the enigmatic title
of a poignant story of a war named
the Vietnam War by the Americans,
and the American War by the Vietnamese.
It is a strange kind of war in which, Nguyen
observes, its history has been written by the
vanquished, not the victor. This book is a
gripping tale with many parts that may be fact
rather than fiction. The reader will not know.
Who does, in such stories?
The story is narrated by a man who is known
only as the Captain. He is the aide-de-camp of
a South Vietnamese general known in the book
as the General. The General is in charge of a
security unit known as the Special Branch but
does not know that his trusted aide, the Captain,
is a double agent who takes orders from a North
Vietnamese Commandant. The Captain is a
bastard, born of a Vietnamese woman and an
American Catholic priest. As an ‘Amerasian’ he
does not look fully Oriental, nor fully Occidental.
That has its advantages as the story unfolds, but
he is also “forever caught between worlds and
never knowing where he belongs”. The Captain
adores his mother but disdains his hypocritical
father.
The Captain grew up with two friends, Bon and
Man. They swore a secret allegiance as blood
brothers in the midst of the war. Bon’s father was
killed by the North Vietnamese and he swears
revenge. Man and the Captain, on the other
hand, feel that the fate of their country depends
on them becoming revolutionaries.
The story takes off rapidly from the imminent fall
of Saigon to the Communists. The fast, exciting

account from the Captain’s perspective involves
the evacuation of the General and a list of South
Vietnamese that the Captain has to help prepare.
When the evacuation by American airplanes
begins, desperation and danger rain on the
evacuees from all directions and in all manner of
forms, from demands of bribes to the screaming
rockets from the advancing Communists. In the
dramatic last moments, Bon loses his wife and
young child. He becomes even more embittered.
His grief is indescribable. It is a grief that can
only compare to that the Captain feels for his
part in not saving a female Communist agent
from torture because that would have revealed
his allegiance to the Communists.
Eventually arriving in California, with the General
and the General’s family – his wife, known
only as Madame, and his daughter Lana – the
Captain finds a former professor of his, Avery
Hammer, and gets his help in obtaining a
scholarship. He falls in love with a JapaneseAmerican lady, Sofia Mori, who is the professor’s
secretary. The Captain has a difficult time
settling into this new and intriguing country. His
heart, partially enamoured by the people there,
continues to be bound to his homeland, Vietnam.
He finds an old friend, Son Do (now known
as Sonny) who has settled in America and
now works as a journalist. The paths of
Sofia, Sonny, the Captain, and the General
become enmeshed. The General starts a
small business but soon, with encouragement
from a Congressman and his old US Army
handler, Claude, the General raises a counterrevolutionary army with the objective of returning
to fight in Vietnam. News of this clandestine

army spreads, much to the annoyance of the
General who believes that it is Sonny’s work.
Just as he had suspected a traitor among them
when they first arrived in America, the General
orders the Captain to have, first, the traitor,
then Sonny, killed. The traitor is identified as the
crapulent Major, who the Captain knows is not;
but again, like with the female agent, the Captain
cannot save him without blowing his own cover.
Sonny, too is another innocent casualty in the
war that does not seem to end. Although Sonny
has won over Sofia, the Captain bears him no
enmity. But what is he to do?
Life among the Americans is not easy. The
Captain finds himself thrown into a movie
production of the Vietnam War. It is called The
Hamlet. The captain discovers the American
director’s chauvinistic attitude and becomes a
victim of his arrogance and venom – but
he survives.
The story quickens to the stage where the
General’s revolutionary army returns to Vietnam
through Laos. The Captain, who has been
keeping his Vietnamese counterparts informed
throughout, becomes emotionally torn when Bon
volunteers to fight. The Captain vows to save
Bon. He does not know how, but he knows that
he must return with Bon. Man warns the Captain;
in fact, he orders the Captain not to return to
Vietnam. The Captain disobeys this order. He
has too much guilt. As he once said of himself
that after his conscience, his liver is the most
abused part of his body.
Part of the intrigue towards the end of his story,
is his growing romantic relationship with Lana,
the General’s daughter. Does the General know?
How will this affect the Captain’s mission?
Can he save Bon? This is a story in which one
can learn, like the Captain, to “soak oneself in
sadness, then rinse oneself in hope”.
Nguyen has written a non-fiction historical

who enjoy The Sympathizer are likely to be

In the Unlikely Event
Author: Judy Blume
Publisher: London: Picador, 2015
Call No.: English BLU
Historical fiction buffs might want to pick up In the Unlikely Event,
which was nominated for Best Historical Fiction for the Goodreads
Choice Awards 2015. A hauntingly beautiful story, it is inspired by actual
events in author Judy Blume’s home town where three airplane crashes
occurred in 1952.
The story revolves around the life of Miri Ammerman, a 15-year-old girl growing up in Elizabeth,
New Jersey, in the 1950s. Plane travel for the masses was possible and new then – everyone
was excited about travelling to novel and faraway places. Life was perfect . . . until three planes
fell from the sky in the space of three months, killing neighbours and friends and leaving
gashing scars in the lives of the community.
The tragedies brought the community closer together but also revealed gaping holes in
seemingly perfect families. Friendships were torn apart; families fearing for their lives left their
home town which had earned itself the reputation of being the ‘Plane Crash City’. And through
these tragedies, Miri learns that life will always find a way, a new beginning, no matter what the
circumstances may be.

A Village Remembered: Kampong Radin Mas,
1800s-1973
Author: Ibrahim Tahir
Publisher: Singapore: OPUS Editorial Pte Ltd, 2013
Call number: Adult Lending SING English 959.57 VIL
From school days to weddings and food, A Village Remembered
transports us back on a journey through one of the oldest Malay
kampongs in Singapore. Far from being an ordinary kampong,
Kampong Radin Mas had a rich heritage and social history. This book tells of legends of
how Radin Mas began and traces its evolution from a kampong into a developed residential
area. Former residents recount stories of a warm community spirit and their memories of
childhood kampong adventures. A Village Remembered also lovingly documents artefacts
from Kampong Radin Mas such as photographs, recipes, and early kitchen tools used; it is
a veritable treasure trove of nostalgia.

Modern Romance
Author: Aziz Ansari and Eric Klinenberg
E-book
Modern Romance expounds on the complexity of dating in current
times, where our options are broadened – and made even more
complicated – by the rise of social media, texting and online dating.
Co-written by a stand-up comedian and a sociologist, this book is packed with punchlines
but is also backed by research. Stand-up comedian Ansari drew material for the book from
personal real-life anecdotes, from people who attended his focus group discussions, and
even from a discussion thread he started on the Internet.
The most interesting part of the book focuses on the differences in the dating cultures of
Tokyo, New York and Buenos Aires. While some of the concepts introduced in this book
are certainly not new, Modern Romance will help you realise that you are not alone in your
experiences.

“Apakah pentingnya hidup sihat?”
mengamalkan gaya hidup sihat seperti sering bersenam, menjaga permakanan kita,
mempunyai sikap positif serta sentiasa bersyukur atas segala kurniaan Ilahi. Pendekatan

A Will for the Woods
Publisher: New York, New York: First Run Features, 2014
Call No.: AV English 393.1 WIL
A Will for the Woods is a documentary that follows cancer-stricken
psychiatrist Dr Clark Wang on his journey in advocating natural burials
to minimise a burial’s impact on the environment. What objectively
begins as an exploration into an environmentally-favourable method of
entombment turns into a more personal journey about the life Wang has
led, the type of person he has turned out to be, and the legacy he wants
to leave behind.
In spite of its grim subject matter, A Will for the Woods is a thought-provoking film that will
inspire you to contemplate on how personal decisions can affect the overall environment.
Wang’s passion for his cause and the constant conversations about mortality and the
inevitability of our end also highlight the film’s most important message of all: to live boldly
and meaningfully even in the face of death.

Twice Upon a Time takes place in three worlds: Frivoli, the home of sweet
dreams; Murkworks, the factory of nightmares; and the human world
of Din. Every night, Greensleeves, the ruler of Frivoli, delivers pleasant
dreams to the Rushers (humans) of Din with the help of his little workers,
the Figmen of Imagination. Meanwhile, Synonamess Botch, the ruler
of Murkworks, sends out his vultures to drop nightmare bombs on the
sleeping Rushers.
The battle between dreams and nightmares unfolds when Botch succeeds in imprisoning
Greensleeves and the Figmen in an evil plot to unleash a torrent of nightmares upon the
Rushers. It is now up to two misfit inhabitants of Frivoli – Ralph and Mumford – who have
unwittingly assisted Botch, to set things right.
Wild and wacky, Twice Upon a Time is an animated spoof of fairy tales that is sure to delight
