FROM THE RABBI
Welcoming the Stranger
RABBI RABBI ETHAN WITKOVSKY
L
ast month I completed my first
High Holidays as assistant
rabbi at PAS. Thank you to
the entire community for making the
holidays an enjoyable and meaningful
experience for me! It was my first
High Holidays as
a rabbi here, but
not my first High
Holidays at Park
Avenue Synagogue.
My first year at
JTS, I stayed in
New York City for
Rosh Hashanah. I
was new in town; I
had never lived anywhere other than
Madison, Wisconsin and Oberlin,
Ohio. A college friend invited me to
Rosh Hashanah services and dinner
at her parents’ house on the Upper
East Side. Inexperienced in navigating
around Manhattan, I got so lost that I
gave up hope of finding the house. In
my plight, having given up on dinner,
and given up on services, just looking
for any place to rest before the long
walk back to 122nd and Broadway,
I stumbled upon the Park Avenue
Synagogue.
More accurately, I stumbled into
a group of young adults standing
outside of the synagogue. Perhaps
they could tell I was frazzled by the
way I looked; as I walked by, one of
them asked if I was all right. I stopped
and explained my troubles, and as
they were trying to help me find my
way, I offered them some of the apples
2
Park Avenue Synagogue Bulletin
and honey I had been bringing to
the meal I would never find. One of
the PAS young women asked, “What,
are you Chabad?” To which I replied,
“No, I am a rabbinical student at
JTS.” Her immediate response: “Oh
my God, my mother will love you!” I
then went inside and prayed my first
minha/ma'ariv at the Park Avenue
Synagogue.
The exhortation to “not oppress
the stranger” occurs in the Bible 36
times; welcoming outsiders is one
of our core principles. Usually this
commandment is qualified that we
should not wrong the stranger in our
midst because “you were strangers in
the land of Egypt.” The commandment
pushes us not merely to kindness but
to empathy. Because we know what
it is like to be oppressed, we should
treat those who are oppressed with
care and compassion. In a small way,
I know what it is like to be a lost
stranger on the Upper East Side. I
was lucky to find this synagogue that
Rosh Hashanah eight years ago, and
I was lucky to find my way back to
this synagogue last summer. Thank
you, Park Avenue Synagogue, for
being warm and welcoming. My wife
Erin and I are excited to be a part
of this community and look forward
to joining you in welcoming others
through the years to come.

Learn about Shabbat in preparation for Shabbat
Supper Club. There are set rituals and blessings
for Shabbat, but no two people, no two families,
observe and celebrate Shabbat in exactly the same
way. This is part of what makes Shabbat kadosh,
holy. We will explore the meaning and practice
of Shabbat rituals and traditions that you can
bring into your own home to make Shabbat more
meaningful each week.

Honoring Leah Altchek on Her Retirement from the ECC
Wednesday | November 5 | 5:30 – 6:30 pm
Join generations of ECC learners and their families to honor and thank veteran teacher Leah
Altchek, who retired at the end of last school year after 30 years in the ECC. Leah holds a BA in
Art History and Archaeology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and an MA in Art History from CUNY. She once worked on an archaeological dig near the Kotel. When her daughter
attended the PASECC, Leah applied to be an assistant teacher. She so enjoyed being with the children that
she enrolled in NYU to earn her MA in Early Childhood Education. Leah says that she was growing and
learning in all her years at the ECC, working under three different directors. It was always exciting to spend
her days with the children and rewarding to know their parents. In addition to her daughter, Ruth, Leah has
a son, Daniel, and two granddaughters.

Library Hours
Through December
Holocaust survivors living in Israel present photos that
speak of courage, aging, surviving, and loving and living.
The photos are the product of a unique workshop, a joint
project of JDC-Eshel, the Israel Ministry of Social Affairs
and Social Services and UJA-Federation of New York.
Through the project, which operates throughout Israel,
participants express their personal stories, memories
and feelings.
JDC-Eshel, the Association for Planning and Development of Services for
the Aged in Israel, works to ensure adequate housing, social and health
services to seniors, regardless of their ability to pay, and has been the
foremost organization in Israel working for the welfare of the elderly since
1969.
Monday: 12:00 – 6:00 pm
Tuesday through Thursday: 12:00 – 6:30 pm
Friday: 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Marga is generally in the library at other times as well. Feel free to stop
by! The library is closed during classes on Mondays, 6:30 – 8:45 pm; on
Wednesdays, November 5 and 19, 7:00 – 8:00 pm; and on Thursdays,
9:15 – 10:30 am. Outside of these times, the library is usually open. When
Marga is not there, follow the instructions posted in the library for checking
out and returning books.
The library catalog is online! From your desktop computer or from your
handheld device, you can find out whether or not a particular book is in
the library or browse new books that have been added to the collection
recently. As always, the library is a haven where congregants of all ages
learn Torah, read the daily news, surf the web, chat in Yiddish or play with
Hebrew alphabet blocks. Librarian Extraordinaire Marga Hirsch can help
you find a great book to read, research a knotty question, interlibrary-loan
a book or choose a Jewish book for your child or grandchild.
To browse the online catalog, visit pasyn.org, click on Rothschild Library
