Page 2 Classic & Competition Car December 2010 © Simon & Janet Wright Editorial With the days getting shorter and the nights drawing in, you would think that most events would have finished for the season. Well I can tell you that November has been a very busy Simon Wright month for motor sport Editor/Photographer in the UK. We have reports on two meetings at Donington Park that took advantage of the early nights by staging some night racing. Silverstone took fireworks to a new level with the Walter Hayes Trophy meeting over the Bonfire night weekend, and finished the meeting with its own bonfire and fireworks display. November also saw the 750MC hold its winter series race at Donington. November also sees the Classic Motor Show arrive at the National Exhibition Centre. This years show seemed bigger and better than ever and with seven Halls in use for the show, you really needed more than one day to see everything. Brooklands museum is planning to host the largest gathering of vintage and classic cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles in the South East on New Years Day. Its annual gathering on 1st January 2011 is expected to attract more than 400 classic vehicles. Normal admission prices will apply, but for people arriving in a pre 1973 vehicle at the Campbell Gate off Brooklands road will be given a £1 discount off the normal prices. The museum’s normal displays and aircraft, including Concorde will be open along with various eating facilities. Further information can be obtained from the Brooklands Web sitewww.brooklandsmuseum.com Mike Smith debuts new car. © Simon & Janet Wright Tour Britannia regular Mike Smith has moved from front to rear engine layout in an effort to achieve better results. Mike has replaced his Mk 1 Ford Escort with the exSean Lockyear yellow Porsche 911. Mike bought the Porsche straight after Sean took victory in this years’ Tour Britannia. Mike had his maiden run driving the Porsche in the Closed wheels race at the Walter Hayes Trophy meeting at Silverstone at the beginning of November. Mike qualified well in 5th place, and after a good start was well placed in the race for the first few laps. Then the car stuck in gear due to a gear linkage problem and Mike was forced to retire from the race. The show encompasses all forms of motor sport from the current Formula 1 display which will feature the World Championship winning Red Bull RB6 right down to grass roots level motor sport. Celebraties lined up include the legendary Murray Walker, current BBC TV presenters Martin Brundle and Jake Humphrey, top drivers Alan McNish, Andy Priaulx, and former World Champion Jody Scheckter. There will also be live action in the Fifth Gear Live Action Arena with current British Touring Car Champion Jason Plato and his fellow TV presenter Tiff Needle. The 2011 show will also feature a special McLaren racing display which will include cars such as Ayrton Senna’s MP4/4, Niki Lauda’s MP4/2 and the 1995 Le Mans winning F1 GTR sports car. For further information please see their web site at www.autosportinternational.com/ Jaguar E-Type celebrations in 2011. © Mick Herring The HSCC have announced a new challenge series of races for Jaguar E-Types built before 31st December 1965. The 5 race series will be split into two classes, Class A for pre 66 specification cars complying with homologation 100 and class B for pre 63 specification cars complying with homologation 34. The provisional dates are as follows: 1st-3rd July Brands Hatch GP circuit, 22nd-24th July Silverstone GP circuit, 13th-14th August Nurburgring (Germany), 28th-29th August Oulton Park International circuit and a further meeting To Be Announced penciled in for the 16th-17th September. Further details can be obtained from the Historic Sports Car Club. Race Retro 2011 is also having a major celebration of the Jaguar E-Types 50th anniversary. The show running from the 25-27th February 2011 at Stoneleigh Park Coventry, is very near to the birth place of the most iconic British sports cars ever made. During the show, various drivers and back room boys who helped develop the cars competition heritage will be making an appearance. There will be a major display of competition E-Types at the show, along with many other racing Jaguars. The E-Type legend was born from the first race at the Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting on the 15th April 1961. Two E-Types were entered in the Sports car and GT race for Graham Hill and Roy Salvadori and Hill took the cars maiden victory in its first race. This month’s photo from my archive shows Emerson Fittipaldi driving the 4-w-d Lotus 56B Pratt and Whitney turbine in practice for the 1971 Race of Champions at Brands Hatch. The car was impressive in the wet practice conditions but in the race suffered from the Brands Hatch bumps with the suspension eventually collapsing. This wasn't the first appearance of a turbine powered car at the circuit as the Howmet TX held that distinction in the BOAC 1000kms a few years before. Turbine racing engines suffer from throttle lag and the cars best Grand Prix finish that year was in the Italian Grand Prix where it came in 8th. Page 7 Classic & Competition Car December 2010 © Mick Herring BRSCC 3 hours night race Donington Park. Winning Ferrari F430 GTC of Gamski and Robinson through the Craner curves. With everyone keen to get a race in at Donington in 2010, the BRSCC staged a Britcar race at the circuit on Saturday 30th October. Coming straight after the Britcar 24 hour race at Silverstone, the organisers decided that the Donington race should finish in the dark. There is no lighting around the circuit, so temporary floodlights were set up at the pit entrance and exit and the garage doors on all the pits were left open to provide light from the garages to help illuminate the pit lane. Qualifying took place on the Friday and included a session in the dark to give the drivers a chance to practice the circuit TVR Sagaris of Tonge/Glynn/Hood at night. Fresh from their victory in the 24 hour race at Silverstone, Gamski and Robinson put their Ferrari F430 GTC on pole position from the Millard and Heward LM3000. The LM3000 grabbed the lead from the start, but were soon passed by the Porsche 911 GT3 of Gaw and Dryburgh who held the lead until lap 60 when they pitted for the driver change.. This allowed the Marcos Mantis GT3 of Fiorentino and Huggins to Bailey/Schulz Ferrari 430 Challenge lead for a few laps until they too pitted. This let the Ferrari of Gamski and Robinson hit the front on lap 70 and they then led all the way to the finish at 144 laps. The event was the brainchild of one of the organising clubs founders, Holland Birkett, and was named in his honour after his death. In the past the event has attracted names such as Lola constructor Eric Broadley and Lotus founder Colin Chapman. Jim Clark and Graham Hill, who later went on to Grand Prix fame, both took part as did long distance drivers Richard Attwood and Vic Elford. Even Steve McQueen took part in the event in 1962 driving a mini. Nicholas Olsen Lotus Esprit S3 sweeps past Steve Atkinson MGB GT V8 Rob Newall locks up his Jaguar XJ120 into the chicane couple of extra night races in the dark, a first for the Classic Sports Car Club. The day had a foggy start as practice started, and remained cold and dull through the entire meeting.. The first race was for Future Classics which consist of Sports, saloons and GT cars from the 1970’s and 80’s and saw a good variety of cars entered ranging from a 1300cc MG Midget right up to a 6 litre Pontiac Trans Am. This was a late decision to stage the meeting, so all the races were non-championship, and winner penalties were not applied. Nigel Ainge/Alan Broad Honda Integra DC5 Classic & Competition Car December 2010 © Mick Herring © Mick Herring both numbers and qualifying , with Marcus Carniel claiming pole in his Porsche 964 C2 3600 and 3 more Porsche filled the first two rows of the grid. Carniel led from the start until his pit stop on lap 14. Mark Koeberle then took the lead in his Porsche 944 Turbo for a short spell before Nicholas Olson hit the front and held the lead to win in his Lotus Esprit S3 2200. Koeberle finished 2nd and John Muirhead Lotus 7 early leader in the Swinging Sixties race © Mick Herring another Porsche 944S2 took 3rd place driven by Eacock and Morris. The Jaguar XJS and Jaguar saloon race saw a good entry, mostly made up of XJS examples, but with a little interest in the Jaguar Classic class. Elke Wellhausen put his 1964 Jaguar Knobly replica on pole by just over a second from the 6 litre XJ12 of Rob Newall. Alex Harrison came third overall to win the XJS class. The “Tin Tops” race allows any normally aspirated saloon under 2 litres to compete. Gane and Adams took pole position by just under 2 tenths of a second in their Honda Integra Type-R. The race was a © Mick Herring Kevin Doyle in the 6 litre Jaguar XJ12 only managed 2nd place in the XJS & Jaguar saloon race thrilling battle between the Hondas’ of Gane and Adams and the Ainge/Broad Honda Integra DC5 which took the victory. By the end of the race the Cox/Hampshire Peugeot 306 split the two Hondas’ With further races for the Swinging 60s, and the Magnificent Sevens, plus the two night races, the meeting did not lack action. In 1964 I attended the European Grand Prix at my then local circuit, Brands Hatch. Not only was this the first Grand Prix I had been to but it was also my first motor race! What has this got to do with the heading of my Ramblings piece this month you may ask? © Pete Austin I was excited to see the great drivers of the day such as Clark, Hill and Surtees and the cars such as Lotus, Derek Bell (McLaren M9A) British Grand Prix Silverstone 1969 BRM and Ferrari that I had only previously read about. I did not go to the practice sessions for this event (I was still at school then!) but it was the appearance of a car, the BRM P67 on Friday, that prompted these thoughts. Richard Attwood drove this experimental car which was based on the Ferguson FF system. Page 18 Classic & Competition Car December 2010 © Pete Austin Lotus 63 - 1969 British Grand Prix Silverstone Ferguson had already raced their own P99 model in the 1961 British Grand Prix (Fairman and Moss) and Stirling later went on to win the Oulton Park Gold Cup in the car. This wasn’t the first time that a manufacturer had tried the concept with Spyker, Maserati, Bugatti and Cisitalia having built cars in the past. Even Mercedes Benz gave it serious thought in 1954. However, it wouldn’t be until 1969 that I first saw 4-w-d Grand Prix cars in serious competition. On the entry list for that years British Grand Prix at Silverstone were examples from Matra (MS84), Lotus (63) and McLaren (M9A) which all raced driven by Beltoise (9th), Miles (10th) and Bell (retired) respectively. This was the McLarens’ only appearance although Matra and Lotus persisted with the idea throughout the season. With Matra and Lotus fighting for the World Championship with Stewart and Rindt they obviously concentrated their efforts on conventional cars although Johnny Servoz-Gavin scored a point for the Matra MS84 in the Canadian Grand Prix later in the season. Cosworth also built a futuristic looking car that year but it never raced. The next time I saw a 4-w-d Grand Prix car driven in ‘anger’ was at the 1971 Brands Hatch Race of Champions where Emerson Fittipaldi drove the Pratt and Whitney turbine powered Lotus 56B. It didn’t look bad in the wet practice sessions but was unimpressive in the race itself. Four wheel drive has also been tried at Indianapolis, in sportscars (Felday BRM) and of course the Audi Quattro was a success in rallying where grip on gravel surfaces and in snow is at a premium. But in Formula 1 it has never proved to be a great success. I think that the different driving technique required, extra weight, and the need to find a balance of the system between the front and rear wheels have all contributed to this. Nonetheless it did produce some interesting cars. Page 19 Classic & Competition Car December 2010 Classic Motor Show, The NEC Birm © Janet Wright This years Classic Motor show at the National Exhibition Centre proved to be a big hit with the public, with over 45,000 visitors over the three days. If you take into account the cross over visitors from the MPH show, the actual visitor numbers who viewed the show are around the 84,000 mark. This years show was bigger and better than last year, now occupying 7 halls and including the new Classic Motorbike show, which had a separate area to display the bikes and also provide some live action with a vintage “Wall of Death” and a classic Trials bike demonstration. Show Manager Andy Rouse was quoted “ Once again all the clubs have excelled with fantastic displays Sir Stirling Moss at the show that allow us to compete with other events on a Worldwide stage at club level. Thanks to everyone involved for their continued support." With over 200 club stands and many more trader Winning Ferrari 250GT Berlinetta Lusso 1963 stands, it was hard to know where to start. The Centre piece display was the Meguiar’s club showcase competiton where top classic cars were on display The competition was won for the second year in a row by the 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso of David Moores. The Alfa Romeo Owners Club had a large display to finish off their centenary year celebrations. The club members manning the stand were also dressed in the old fashion white mechanic overalls. Trident World Cup Rally car To celebrate 40 years of the World Cup Rally to Mexico in 1970 there was a display of cars which took part in the event. One of the more unusual was the Trident Venturer driven by Captain Chris Marriott and Captain Jack Dill from the army. The Venturer was built using a modified Triumph TR6 chassis and powered by a Ford 3 litre Essex V6 engine matched to a Ford four speed overdrive gearbox. For the rally, the suspension was uprated, with full roll cage fitted to the interior, Perspex door windows and additional lights fitted to the front along with bull bars front and rear, and spare wheels mounted on the roof rack. In the Rally, the crew made Bulgaria after some delays to replace suspension bushes, but on the first stage in Montenegro a rock on the rough stage bent a steering arm and there was insufficient time to replace or repair it, so the car was retired from the event and returned to Ipswich. © Mick Herring © Mick Herring All the major car clubs had displays at the show. High light for the motor sport fan was the 1988 Le Mans 24 Hour race winning Jaguar XJR-9. Powered by a 7 litre V12 engine, the race was won by Jan Lammers/Jonny Dumfries/Andy Wallace. Also on display was a magnificent Jaguar XK 120. It was powered by the Ford 1699cc V4 engine mounted centrally, driving the rear wheels. Built between 1967 and 1973 at Romorantin, a total of 9610 were manufactured, 4731 were LX’s. The mid engined 2 +2 LX coupe was introduced at the 1970 Geneva motor show .It was a minor re-design to the 530A by Michelotti which included making the rear hatch open on struts, like a hatchback, and changes to the front bumper. The brainchild of James Beckett, who is still heavily involved, the HSCC run event caters for Formula Ford cars of all ages. © Janet Wright The event is held in the memory of Walter Hayes, who, after starting life as a journalist, joined Ford in their public relations department and encouraged them to take on Ferrari in that historic battleground, the Le Mans 24 hours. This years winner was Irishman Peter Dempsey who dominated the final with an impressive drive. He now joins Joey Foster in winning the trophy three times and he is aiming to beat the record next year. Joey Foster himself was driving one of the Sheshon Racing entered cars of James Beckett, the other being driven by James Wood. Unfortunately, the plans got changed, so the Winter series took place in one meeting at the circuit on the 14 November. The weather was dull and overcast, but the racing proved to be a little to hot. The first race, the Allcomers Handicap was abandoned after 2 red flags, the second came after two Subaru’s and a Radical tangled coming out of the chicane, resulting in Chris Huntley sliding his Subaru Impreza on its roof about 100 metres towards the pit entrance. The race was awarded to current leader Darcy Smith driving a Nemesis REM98 . The second race, run at the end of the day ran its full 10 laps and Chris Huntley Subaru Impreza on its roof caused the first race to be victory went to Jon Paul Ivey in a red flagged for a 2nd time Radical Prosport. Andy Thompson won the Handicap in both races driving a Seat Leon. Other victories went to Ian Burton, both Formula Vee races, Jonny Weston-Taylor won both Formula 4 races driving a Mygale US2000 and Nick Thornton-Jones in a Citroen Saxo won both Stock Hatch races. The most exciting close racing of the day were the two Locost races, which again saw the same driver, Alastair Garratt take both victories. The other winner on the day was George Robinson who won the single Toyota MR2 race. In the Toyota race, former British GT driver Jody Firth shared a car with his brother Nick who he is tutoring. Andy Cummings Radical went well in practice.
